INTERAZIONI è un’associazione culturale nata nel 2008 che ha come obiettivo la divulgazione sul territorio di temi legati al Design, alla Musica, all’Architettura, all’Arte, alla Letteratura, alla Fotografi a,al Costume e alla Moda e stimola il coinvolgimento delle persone interessate. Punta, in particolare, al confronto tra diverse discipline quale mezzo per una loro defi nizione contemporanea. INTERAZIONI DESIGN ha organizzato e prodotto la mostra UDESIGN, già preceduta negli anni da altre iniziative editoriali e culturali sempre legate al mondo del design.

IINTERAZIONI is a cultural association formed in 2008 to spread awareness in the region about design, music, architecture, art, literature, photography, and fashion, and to encourage anyone with an interest in these subjects to get involved. It concentrates in particular on comparisons between the various disciplines as a means of giving them a contemporary interpretation.INTERAZIONI DESIGN organised and produced the UDESIGN exhibition, presented in previous years by different publishing and cultural enterprises connected with the design world.

INTRODUZIONE

Attività qualificante del nostro territorio, la ricerca sul design – ovvero sulla dimensione estetica di oggetti funzionali della vita quotidiana – è oggi più che mai fondamentale e strategica in una congiuntura difficile e in uno scenario internazionale in continua evoluzione. In questa ricerca si intrecciano saperi antichi e nuove competenze, abilità artigianali e organizzazione aziendale, creatività individuale e lavoro di squadra. Il design è cultura perché legato alla tradizione, alle arti e soprattutto agli stili di vita; ma il design è ovviamente anche produzione industriale, marketing e quindi fattore di sviluppo economico. La mostra UDESIGN, curata con intelligenza e passione da Anna Lombardi e organizzata dalla associazione Interazioni in collaborazione con il Comune di Udine, per la prima volta in modo sistematico presenta nella nostra città gli oggetti di una ricerca in costante crescita, che è ormai diventata un tratto distintivo del made in Friuli. Si tratta di un progetto di grande rilievo, non per ultimo per il modello organizzativo proposto, basato sul pieno coinvolgimento delle aziende e delle associazioni di categoria. Si affronta qui un principio cardine della politica della nostra Amministrazione: la valorizzazione del lavoro creativo come elemento al tempo stesso di cultura e di progresso sociale ed economico di una comunità. INTRODUCTION

Research into design, which is to say the aesthetic properties of everyday functional objects, is one of the defining characteristics of our local economy and is rendered all the more strategically important by the current global economic downturn and climate of flux and uncertainty. The research presented here interweaves historical knowledge with modern-day skills, craft expertise with business organization, individual creativity with team work. Design is a cultural phenomenon as it is inextricably bound to tradition, to the arts, and above all to different lifestyles; yet design is much more than this obviously: it is also about industrial production, commerce and marketing and is therefore an economic factor of development. The exhibition UDESIGN, curated with intelligence, passion and enthusiasm by Anna Lombardi, and organized by the association Interazioni in partnership with Udine City Council, provides the first systematically organized showcase of the region’s design goods, the fruits of a constant and ever expanding research that is now a distinctive feature of made in Friuli products. It is a project extensive in both scope and vision, not least for the organizational model it proposes, which is based on the full involvement of individual businesses and business bodies. What is more, it is underpinned by a vision that is not only shared by the incumbent City Administration, but which is one of its key policy principles: the promotion of creative endeavour as a means of enhancing both the cultural enrichment and social and economic progress of a community. UDESIGN, la mappa dell’Industria di Design in Friuli

Si scrive UDESIGN, si legge YOU DESIGN. Il titolo dell’iniziativa gioca su un doppio significato: da una partelo stemma della città di Udine utilizzato nel logotipo della mostra indica il territorio del capoluogo friulano come area privilegiata di un’inedita indagine sull’industria; dall’altra la declinazione del verbo inglese suona simultaneamente come affermazione e incoraggiamento.

UDESIGN traccia una prima mappa delle aziende che, in Friuli, fanno della cultura del progetto una delle loro istanze principali e hanno scelto la qualità estetica come strategia di differenziazione del prodotto sul mercato internazionale. Una ricerca territorialmente limitata che, proprio in virtù di questo limite, è emblematica di come sta evolvendo l’industria italiana. Molte sono le aziende, piccole e grandi, dal nord al sud, che si stanno muovendo sul terreno dell’innovazione di prodotto: riconvertendo la propria produzione, chiamando i designer a collaborare, proponendo nuovi servizi.

Se crisi, concorrenza, decentramento sono parole ricorrenti che, nelle notizie quotidiane, opprimono il Friuli e l’Italia produttiva in generale, UDESIGN ne vuole suggerire altre: design, qualità, intraprendenza. Termini che indicano la strada dell’identità come potenziale valore aggiunto nel mercato globale. Identità che affonda le radici nell’ubicazione sul territorio, nella tradizione manifatturiera, nella vocazione all’internazionalizzazio-ne, ma anche nelle risorse umane, nella storia, nella geografia del Friuli. Le aziende sono fatte dalle persone e di persone; ognuna ha una storia unica; ognuna è situata in un luogo diverso. Ognuna, quindi, è diversa, e risponde al mercato in maniera differente.

Nell’iniziativa si legge la volontà di richiamare l’attenzione sull’articolazione produttiva che ha sempre contraddistinto l’area territoriale intorno a Udine, capace di esprimere una vitalità imprenditoriale con pochi confronti in Europa e in grado di far conto su proprie specifiche capacità creative imprenditoriali. Non solo: si propone di educare il pubblico nei confronti di una maggiore attenzione alla qualità del prodotto, e in particolare a quella del prodotto manifatturiero friulano. A questo proposito un ricco programma di incontri con designer e altri operatori di settore, nazionali e internazionali, ha contribuito ad approfondire il tema della relazione tra design e territorio.

Non solo arredo, non solo industria. Dal passato al presente. Il presente volume rispecchia, per quanto possibile, la struttura della mostra. È concepito per sezioni, che corrispondono ai diversi settori merceologici presenti sul territorio: espressione di un saper fare che alle volte affonda le radici lontano nel passato, le aziende rappresentano un ideale filo conduttore che ci conduce al presente. Accanto ai prestigiosi marchi friulani del design italiano, molte sono le sorprese riservate dalle piccole aziende e da una nuova generazione di artigiani, rappresentate in questo libro con le foto dei prodotti scelti, accompagnati da una breve descrizione.Le pagine dedicate alle aziende sono intercalate da quelle delle organizzazioni che si sono prodigate per la realizzazione di UDESIGN. Alla fine del libro si trovano i profili di ciascuna di esse, e dei designer autori degli oggetti selezionati.

Tra gli eredi di una grande tradizione che ha visto nella Solari la sua massima espressione, ci sono gli orologiai udinesi Tarondo, con il loro cronografo da corsa, interamente montato e rifinito a mano. A fare da ideale filo conduttore tra la grande storia dell’industria tessile che dal settecento ha portato il Friuli fin nel novecento, ci sono alcune esperienze artigianali - i cappelli, simili a piccole architetture molli, di Lucia Mainetti e gli arazzi di Carmen Marchese, realizzati con ritagli di tessuti da tappezzeria.

Una menzione speciale per Foglianera: la parure in acrilico, caratterizzata da forme e decori inusuali è un gioiello unico da indossare.

Non manca un omaggio al maestro del design friulano Werther Toffoloni che, con la poltrona disegnata per Germa nel 1972 offre una interessante rilettura dello stile internazionale di stamposcandinavo. Alcune sedie non sono mai state esposte prima, come i tre esemplari di Fjord, poltrona disegnata da Patricia Urquiola per Moroso, la cui tappezzeria è stata rivisitata per l’occasione da Giulio Ridolfo, e Etcetera che, disegnata da Jan Ekselius nel 1970 e recentemente rieditata da Crassevig, è un classico a livello internazionale, ricercato dai collezionisti e battuto nelle aste più prestigiose.

Nel percorso che dal passato porta al presente, ci sono tante “primizie”: Telar e Rasule, rispettivamente una libreria disegnata da Cristian Malisan/Roberto Barazzuol, e un tappeto di legno disegnato da Nicola Nerboni, di manifattura carnica, come – con sottile ironia - dice il marchio stesso, Karn; Bag un termosifone portatile di legno disegnato da Enzo Berti e messo a punto da I-Radium; Tra, ideato da Tomoko Azumi, un appendiabiti cui si apprezza l’effetto di apertura a scatto, prodotto da Zilio Aldo; Agua, vasca da bagno in legno massiccio, disegnata da Edoardo Petri per la Franco Cecotti, straordinario esempio di combinazione di sapienza artigiana e tecnologie moderne. E, infine, non certo ultimi a dimostrare l’inventiva degli imprenditori friulani, gli occhiali W-Eye, disegnati da Matteo Ragni, in collaborazione con MA-WOOD, Doriano Mattellone e Antonio Stella, realizzati in legno multistrato curvato: davvero un bell’esempio di capacità di riconversione industriale.

L’industria in museo: da NUOVE CONTAMINAZIONI a UDESIGN

UDESIGN si propone come esempio di collaborazione costruttiva tra pubblico e privato: una stagione culturale dedicata al design e alla cooperazione tra musei e industrie che è stata inaugurata,

a Udine, dalla Galleria D’Arte Moderna con NUOVE CONTAMINAZIONI, nel 1996. Articolata manifestazione, vedeva valorizzare lo sconfinamento tra arte, architettura, design e fotografia, e alcuni manufatti industriali protagonisti in museo, proprio nella chiesa di San Francesco. Contenitore ideale, per dimensioni e per prestigio, ancora pronto a ospitare, nel 2003, la mostra LEGNO, INDUSTRIA, DESIGN: DAGLI ARCHIVI FANTONI, dove il percorso dell’azienda, fondata alla fine dell’ottocento, diventava il cardine su cui far ruotare la storia stessa dell’industria friulana, con una ricchissima messe di documenti e mobili originali. Nel 2006 ancora un coraggioso evento - ACCIAIO DOMANI: SAPERI, RICERCA, FUTURO. Un’iniziativa di grande respiro che portava la cultura del ferro nell’antica “fabrica” di San Francesco, e giganteschi manufatti in tutte le piazze della città, nonché alcune sculture appositamente realizzate da un gruppo di artisti. La mostra fu il primo, grande esempio di collaborazione tra pubblico e privato.

Successivamente la manifestazione fieristica INNOVACTION ha tracciato una linea di continuità nel rapporto tra cultura e industria con CREACTIVITY, nel 2007, seguita da DESIGN: QUALITY FOR LIFE, nel 2008. Vale la pena ricordare ancora DESIGN: UNA GUIDA PER NON SBAGLIARE (25 oggetti in produzione premiati dal Compasso d’Oro), promossa nel 2002 dal centro Ricerche Fantoni e, nel 2004 EST EST EST, osservatorio sul Design a Est di Milano, voluto da Promosedia. Iniziative tutte realizzate all’interno dei padiglioni ottocenteschi della Fiera di Udine, sono state caratterizzate da un inedito afflusso di pubblico: nel 2008 in tre giorni entrarono 20.000 persone. Per il design, un successo straordinario. Successo confermato da UDESIGN con il continuo interesse che ha destato lungo tutto il periodo di apertura. La mostra si è dimostrata una scenografia ideale per far apprezzare la varietà delle aziende presenti sul nostro territorio e stupire mostrando quanti marchi conosciuti a livello internazionale siano insediati in Friuli.

ALLESTIMENTO UDESIGNrealizzato da IDEAEFFE.

L’allestimento di UDESIGN, modulare e smontabile, completamente autoportante,

è stato ideato per essere itinerante e adattabile a diversi spazi. Nel caso dell’edizione nella

Chiesa di San Francesco la combinazione tra antico e moderno è particolarmente riuscita:

gli affreschi quattrocenteschi della chiesa risaltano nel confronto con i materiali

industriali - tralicci di ferro, neon e fari a vista. Gli oggetti di design dono disposti su casse

da imballaggio - anch’esse prodotto industriale in esposizione, quasi a rappresentare la sintesi

di quello che è il design: forma e funzione indissolubilmente legate.

The modular, fully dismountable and easily transportable fittings used for UDESIGN

allow for a completely mobile exhibition that can be easily adapted to fit a variety of spaces.

In the case of the event in the Church of San Francesco, the contrast between historical setting and modern

industrial artefacts proved particularly successful - the church’s 15th century frescoes providing

a contrasting backdrop to the iron trellises, neon tube lighting and floodlights.

The artefacts presented were displayed on packing cases, further echoing the industrial theme,

as if to underline the synthesis that is design – the link between form and function

seamlessly bound.

UDESIGN, a map of the Design Industry in Friuli

Spelt UDESIGN, but pronounced YOU DESIGN, the title is a play on words, sound and meaning, the first letter of the logo representing the initial letter of Friuli’s provincial capital, Udine, which takes central stage in this new exploration of the local design industry, as well as the town’s coat of arms, while the pronunciation of UDESIGN plays on the declination of the English verb, conveying both a sense of active involvement and encouragement.

UDESIGN provides a showcase and the first map of Friuli’s design-driven businesses, companies that have decided to put design at the very heart of their activities and to use aesthetic attributes as a strategy to differentiate their products in global markets and hence gain competitive advantage. Whilst limited to local design industries, this narrow focus serves to highlight what is happening elsewhere across Italy and is emblematic of the current evolution taking place in Italian industry nationally. From north to south, companies both large and small are embracing product innovation, changing their existing product lines, commissioning designers, collaborate and offering new services.

If crisis, competition and industrial off-shoring are the re recurrent themes that fill the news today, their negative message bearing down heavily on Friulian and Italian production generally, UDESIGN aims to promote another vision: design, quality, and enterprise, themes which highlight the potential of local identity to add value to the region’s offerings in global markets Here in Friuli, this identity is rooted in each individual locality, in the local manufacturing tradition and in the region’s international outlook, but also finds expression in local human resources, and in the history and geography of Friuli. These businesses are made by people and of people; each has its own unique history; each is located in a different place and, therefore, each is unique and responds to the market in a different way.

The UDESIGN project represents a desire to put the spotlight on the productive outlook and flexibility that have long characterized and

distinguished the Udine area and, more importantly, the ability to harness the region’s creative strengths and expertise commercially. This long-standing tradition finds expression in an entrepreneurial spirit rarely matched elsewhere in Europe. Yet the aims of this initiative extend beyond a celebration of Friuli’s enterprising culture and aspire to raising public awareness of the importance of quality generally and, more specifically, the quality of Friulian manufactured goods. To this end, a rich and extensive programme of events was organised, bringing together both national and international designers and other key players from the sector to discuss and explore the relationship between design and place.

The project is therefore not limited to a narrow focus on furniture or industry, but takes a broader view, one that embraces both past and present.

Divided into sections, each covering a specific sector, the book reflects as closely as possible the layout and structure of the exhibition itself, tracing the development of the region’s various commodity sectors. Each of the companies presented here represent a part of Friuli’s collective know-how, the roots of which date back centuries in some cases. They are part of the seamless creative thread that runs from past to present. Alongside the prestigious Friulian brands representing the best of Italian design, there are many surprises, with exciting designs created by smaller companies and craftsmen from the new generation of Friulian designers. These are presented with photographs and brief product descriptions. The sections devoted to Friuli’s manufacturing companies are interspersed with pages on the various organizations that contributed to making the UDESIGN project possible. Profiles of these organizations, together with those of the designers whose products were selected are provided at the end of this volume.

Among the heirs of Friuli’s design tradition, which finds its most eloquent expression in the enterprises of Solaris, are the clockmakers Tarondo, with their self-winding racing chronograph, which is entirely assembled and finished by hand. Carrying the mantle of Friuli’s great textile industry that spanned the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, are the craftswomen Lucia Mainetti, whose hats resemble pieces of soft architecture and Carmen Marchese., whose tapestries are made

from upholstery fabric offcuts. Also worthy of mention are the jewellery designers, Foglianera, whose acrylic designs are characterized by unusual shapes and decorative elements, making them truly unique pieces to wear.Homage is also deservedly paid to the Friulian master of design, Werther Toffoloni, whose 1972 armchair design for Germa, offers an interesting take on the international Scandinavian design style.Some of the chairs presented here have never been exhibited before, such as the three examples of the Fjord armchair designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso, the upholstery of which was redesigned especially for the occasion by Giulio Ridolfo, and the newly reissued Etcetera, designed by Jan Ekselius for Crassevig. An international classic, the Etcetera is a collector’s item and sold at the world’s most prestigious auctions.

The creative legacy that links past with present and demonstrates the inventiveness of Friulian entrepreneurs offers many pioneering design “firsts”. Eloquent examples include Telar, a bookcase designed by Cristian Malisan and Roberto Barazzuol; Rasule, a wooden mat designed by Nicola Nerboni, both of which are manufactured in Carnia – as the brand name Karn expresses with subtle irony; Bag, a portable, wooden radiator designed by Enzo Berti and developed by I-Radium; Tra, a coat stand with a clip release conceived by Tomoko Azumi and produced by Zilio Aldo; Agua, a solid wood bathtub designed by Edoardo Petri for Franco Cecotti, which is an outstanding example of what the combination of design excellence and modern technology can generate; and last but by no means least, there are the W-Eye spectacles designed by Matteo Ragni, in collaboration with MA-WOOD, Doriano Mattellone and Antonio Stella, which are realized in curved laminated wood, a marvellous example of industrial innovation.

Industry in the Museum: from NUOVE CONTAMINAZIONI (New Crossovers) to UDESIGN

UDESIGN was conceived as an example of constructive collaboration between the public and private sectors. This cultural initiative devoted to Design and the cooperation between museums and industry was first initiated in Udine by the Galleria D’Arte Moderna with its exhibition NUOVE CONTAMINAZIONI in 1996, which exploited the crossovers between art, architecture,

design, photography and industrially manufactured goods showcased in museums. It was held in the same exhibition space, namely the church of San Francesco, in Udine, which also hosted the LEGNO, INDUSTRIA, DESIGN: DAGLI ARCHIVI FANTONI in 2003, which traced the history of the wood and furniture company Fantoni, which was founded at the end of the 1800s and became the linchpin of Friulian industrial development. The exhibition offered a rich collection of documents and original furniture. The church is an ideal venue both in terms ofsize and prestige and has hosted many other important events including the 2006 ACCIAIO DOMANI: SAPERI, RICERCA, FUTURO (Tomorrow’s Steel, Knowledge, Research, Future) exhibition which brought the culture of the iron industry to the historical ‘factory’ of San Francesco, as well as enormous manufactured goods and purpose made sculptures produced by a group of local artists to the town’s squares. The exhibition was the first example of collaboration between the public and private sectors and was a truly breathtaking initiative both in scope and vision.

This was followed by CREACTIVITYin 2007, an exhibition hosted by the trade fair INNOVACTION, which traced the continuous thread that links culture and industry, and in 2008 by DESIGN: QUALITY FOR LIFE. Other exhibitions worthy of mention include DESIGN: Una Guida per non Sbagliare (Design, a Guide for Avoiding Mistakes) in 2002, which presented 25 design objects already in production that had been awarded the Compasso d’Oro prize launched by the Fantoni Research Centre, and in 2004 EST EST EST, a showcase for design ‘East of Milan’, which was promoted by Promosedia. These latter initiatives, which were all hosted within the pavilions of the 19th century Udine Trade Fair, proved an outstanding success, as the unprecedented number of attendees attests: in just three days, the 2008 exhibition, for example, welcomed a record number of 20,000 visitors. This growing interest in design was further testified by attendance at UDESIGN, which saw a constant stream of visitors for its entire duration. The exhibition proved a perfect means for showcasing Friuli’s broad range of design companies and the scope of their activities. Indeed, of the many examples presented, it was striking just how many leading brands of international standing are based in Friuli.
