Project Description

Amongst the garden grounds, this project proposes a wild grass garden amid the shade of maple trees. Entering the site are narrow pathways of earth and wood, acting as bands of tension – pulling up earth to form seating areas where intimate conversations can flow amongst the un-kempt landscape.

The plan is derived from a contrapposto configuration, with reference to the body, and asymmetrical tension, di-recting the bench areas into differing directions and creat-ing a variety of pathways for visitors to traverse. A selec-tion of native grasses articulate a simple set of areas to add variety and difference across the site.

Weathered Corten Steel holds back the earthen masses to better articulate an elegant separation from the organic to the synthetic. The metal bands work as a textured counter-point to the fuzzy grasses and otherwise natural surround-ings as they melt from horizontal wayfinding to vertical seating arrangements.

Visitors are invited into this space for reflection or intimate conversation, with a most primitive and subtle of sectional interruptions to the landscape.
