Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our FaithBuilding Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith

“Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." John 6:69

“Simón Pedro le respondió: "Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna; y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios.” Juan 6:69

August 29, 2021 - Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time "All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…” James 1:17

In today's reading from Deuteronomy, we find Moses instructing the Israelites on how they are to live once they enter the Promised Land. Remember, Moses will not enter the land with them. Therefore, in this book, over and over again, Moses reminds the people of who they are, of where they have been and to what they are called. Repeatedly and with great precision, Moses details covenant obligations.

One of the important and captivating qualities of Deuteronomy is its ability to draw us into the picture today. The words of Moses are not only addressed to the Israelites, but they are addressed to each generation of listeners – they are addressed to us.

Today ’s Responsorial Psalm calls us to "live in the presence of the Lord". This matches today's first reading from Deuteronomy – "you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land." Who can genuinely worship God? According to the psalm, those who practice social justice can. This includes being truthful, not harming or criticizing each other out of revenge, despising "the reprobate"—those who may seem to get away with their crimes, but honoring those who "fear"—those who revere and respect the Lord. Whoever does these things "shall never be disturbed" from a genuine and authentic worship of God which enables us to "live in the presence of the Lord."

In the second reading, James continues on the theme and establishes a principle: the Christian is such because of an intervention of the transcendent goodness of God. Aware of this, disciples will have to live in practice all of the implications of Baptism that will promote an attitude that is fruitfully receptive to the Word of God because a listening that is merely superficial is not enough. The person who accepts the Gospel, through the vision of faith, becomes a child of God through the life that God communicates within Baptism and that immerses him solidly in an ideal environment of sacredness; thus, the faithful can be, in respect to all the rest of creation, a firstfruit offered in worship to God.

LIVE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORDThe Christian, by being baptized, lays aside the entire,

overabundant accumulation of his moral evilness. By keeping himself in a state of meekness, of openness towards others, he will then be able to receive the Word of God that comes in be planted within him, as it is the seed deposited within his heart and will then bear fruit.

Always attentive to the concrete, James knows how much evil can be done to others through a careless word, and the Christian must know how to be vigilant, prudent in his way of speaking.

The gospel brings us the story the hypocritical Pharisees and scribes who oppose Jesus and serve as negative models for what it means to follow the true way and will of God in order to worship God authentically. Their hypocrisy warns us that our cherished religious traditions and customs, which are merely human precepts, can nullify the very word of God they are meant to supplement and support, if they serve our own selfish aims rather than God's plan. But by powerfully reaffirming God's word over human tradition, Jesus invites us to allow the original, genuine and clear word of God to purify the excesses that our various religious, social and cultural human traditions, customs and practices have introduced into our attempt to live authentic human lives through a genuine and sincere worship of God.

Through his new and authoritative teaching Jesus draws us away from an unnecessary preoccupation with external concerns in our worship of God, and calls us rather to cultivate a clean and open heart to facilitate a proper and wholesome relationship not only with God but with each other. Jesus makes us aware of our need to contend with and overcome the horribly wicked and destructive "defilement" of thoughts and actions that can emerge from the human heart, not only of others but of ourselves.

BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS WHILE IN MASS

GUARDE RESPETO A LOS DEMÁS DURANTE LA MISA

Mute cell phones- Ponga su celular en silencio

Please do not chew gum- Por Favor No masque chicle

Please do not leave garbage in church- Por favor no deje basura en la iglesia

Face Mask Update Bishop Soto has mandated that those who are not fully vaccinated must wear a mask at all times while in the church. Out of our concern for the health and wellbeing of everyone and because of the increased risk presented by the Delta variant we, at the parish level, recommend that even those who are fully vaccinated wear a mask while at Mass.

WELCOME TO USCCB RESPECT LIFEWe help local Respect Life ministries, as well as individual Catholics, to live and share Christ's Gospel of Life. Here, you can find pro-life prayers and devotions; facts about abortion, euthanasia, and bioethics; resources for supporting local ministries; Action Alerts to raise your voice politically; and practical help with sharing the truth about dignity and value of every human person.

WALKING WITH MOMS IN NEEDWalking with Moms in Need is a time of service in which Catholic parishes and communities "walk in the shoes" of local pregnant and parenting women in need.

Everyone should know how to help moms in difficult circumstances.

While not trying to turn Catholic parishes into pregnancy centers, we can support local pregnancy centers where they exist, and we can also find and share other resources with pregnant and parenting women.

And where there are few local resources, we can create our own, based on the gifts of the parish community!

We hope you and your parish will join us in Walking with Moms in Need.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is made up of members from each Parish forming a Conference to serve a specific area, providing resource information, financial assistance, food, clothing assistance at the SVdP store and other things to those in need.

The Holy Family Conference is made up of volunteers who fill these roles, but more help is needed. Join us in following the path that Jesus Christ has called us to follow, in providing comfort, assistance, food, drink, and clothing to our neighbors in need. Please speak with any SVdP member regarding what is needed to join in the help of our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

The aid that SVdP is able to provide comes from the generous contributions made by the local parish community, and

fund raising events such as the upcoming Friends of the Poor Walk. The Walk will be held on Saturday September 25, 2021 at Gibbons Community Park in Carmichael. Please consider signing up to walk today. If you are unable to walk on the 25th, then please consider making a contribution to a walker, benefitting the SVdP Conference they represent. Your fellow Parishioners are representing the Conference here at Holy Family-Citrus Height. All contributions received will go directly to the Holy Family Conference for distribution in the Citrus Heights community.

Guidelines upon Visiting the Pilgrim Churches 1. Pilgrims must pray the Act of Consecration to St. Joseph at the image of St. Joseph or some

prescribed prayers for St. Joseph especially the ones in the Journey with St. Joseph: Pilgrim’s Prayer Booklet, which can be downloaded at https://www.scd.org/sites/default/files/2021-06/Journey-with-Joseph-Booklet-4x6-28pg-web.pdf

2. If possible, pilgrims are encouraged to attend the celebration of the Eucharist and/or receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in one of the pilgrim churches.

3. Always follow diocesan-prescribed protocols for COVID-19. 4. Pilgrims are encouraged to bring something for the poor (including non-perishable groceries, food

vouchers, visa cards, etc.) to one of the pilgrim churches. Journeying with St. Joseph demands a true gift of self because in him we never see discouragement, but rather obedience to, and trust in God. St. Joseph is an exemplary figure for all of us to follow because he took heed of divine providence and guidance.

Breaking Open the Word — 22nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeReadings:

Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 • Psalm 15:2-5 • James 1:17-18, 21-22, 27 • Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

OVERVIEW:

Ideas have consequences. One’s actions spring from one’s deepest beliefs and convictions. Therefore, what we believe is of vital importance. In the first reading, Moses addresses the Israelites as they’re about to enter the Promised Land. Mindful of all the challenges and temptations that await them, Moses urges them to observe all the statutes and decrees which had been revealed by God so that that they “may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land.” They must neither add to nor subtract from the law, he says, but carefully observe everything. By doing so, he assured them, they would enjoy God’s blessings. The second reading echoes Moses’ exhortation as St. James urges us to “humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you”. When we hear Scripture read at Mass we should listen carefully and with an open heart and accept it for what it really is: the word of God. When we hear Scripture God speaks to us, and we respond in prayer and action. It’s important that we put the word of God into practice for when we do our faith comes alive. That’s why James says “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” This week’s gospel deals with the problem of hypocrisy, or of not practicing what you preach. This is always a challenge for people striving to be saints because sooner or later, we all fail to live up to the ideals we espouse. Jesus criticized the scribes and Pharisees because they were scrupulous about observing the rubrics, so to speak, and maintaining correct religious behavior, while ignoring the essential purpose of those activities. Jesus wasn’t critical of religious traditions per se; rather, he was critical of those who hid behind their piety in order to avoid the demands of justice and charity. Religious activity is meant to foster and deepen our relationship with God, which in turn should deepen our relationships with others. We are called to love God and to love our neighbor. That is the goal. That is what we’re striving for. We will not always do it perfectly, of course, but we must always try. The word of God and the teachings of the Church are critical because they reveal God’s standard and show us the goal.

Key Verse: “Humbly welcome the word that has been |planted in you and is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21)

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH:

“In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, “but as what it really is: the word of God.” “In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet his children, and talks with them.” [104]

POPE FRANCIS:

“The Sacred Scriptures are the written testimony of the divine word, the canonical memorial that testifies to the event of Revelation. The Word of God therefore precedes and exceeds the Bible. This is why our faith is not only centered on a book but on a history of salvation and above all on a Person, Jesus Christ, the Word of God made flesh. Precisely because the horizon of the divine word embraces and extends beyond Scripture, to understand it adequately the constant presence of the Holy Spirit is necessary, who “will guide you into all the truth” (Jn 16:13). We must put ourselves in line with the great Tradition which, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and of the Magisterium, recognized the canonical writings as a word which God addressed to his People, and never cease to meditate on them and to discover their inexhaustible riches.” [Speech to Pontifical Biblical Commission, April 12, 2013]

LIFE APPLICATION:

Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church go together and are crucial for our spiritual health, for they are the “lights along the path of faith” (Catechism no. 89) leading us safely to the Promised Land of heaven. Just as in ancient times the ordinances, decrees and statutes given to Moses were meant to protect the people of God from evil and temptation, so the teachings of the Church are meant to protect and guide us now as we strive to be faithful to God in an increasingly unsteady and confusing world. The teachings of the Church together with sacred Scripture provide a strong foundation upon which we can build a solid spiritual life.
