Un vino bianco che batte allo sprint lo Chateau Leoville - Las Cases 2012, uno dei più spettacolari Bordeaux della riva sinistra e il Brunello Tenuta Nuova 2010 di Casanova di Neri, locomotiva del lungo treno dei vini di Montalcino che ricorderanno il millesimo 2010 come una grande annata.Restando alle scelte italiane c'è più Toscana che Piemonte, qualche sorpresona al Sud (c'è il Ciró Superiore di Caparra e Siciliani), mentre la bandiera delle bollicine è tenuta alta dal Giulio Ferrari dei Lunelli e dal Dosage Zero vintage di Cá del Bosco.Come sempre tra le 100 scelte di Gardini ognuno si riconoscerà in alcune, sbalordirà per altre e si chiederà come è possibile che manchi il "suo" vino d'elezione. È normale che i vini di Italia e Francia siano ampiamente i più presenti, ma anche per questa edizione dei 100 Best Wine, Gardini (con l'aiuto nostro e di Marco Tonelli) ha allargato lo sguardo a molte altre realtà, alcune "storiche" come Spagna, Usa, Australia, Germania... Altre meno scontate come Svizzera, Libano, Brasile e addirittura la Siria e l'Inghilterra. Gardini ha cercato l'eccellenza di questi Paesi per dare una panoramica alta e organica ai vini del mondo. It is normal: classifications are in and of themselves an arbitrary exercise. However in this case referee Gardini, on the level of competence, is absolutely credible.One last consideration – it is normal that Italian and French wines abound but in this edition of the 100 Best Wines, Gardini (with some help from us and Marco Tonelli) looked deeper into other winemaking realities – some of them even historical – in Spain, the USA, Australia and Germany as well as others that are less well known such as Switzerland, Lebanon, Brazil and even Syria and England. Gardini sought out the excellent wines of these countries to get a full view of the world’s wines – naturally the best!

La pietra di paragone del Riesling? Forse. Quello che è certo è che questa etichetta declina in primo luogo l’essenza del vitigno, piuttosto che le caratteristiche del terroir. Per i Trimbach suolo, clima e lavoro in cantina sono gli strumenti che debbono coadiuvare lo sviluppo dell’indole varietale, per giunta in rapporto all’annata. La parcella da cui si ricava questo Riesling non è un vero e proprio clos, ovvero una vigna cinta da un muro, ma una porzione del Grand Cru Rosaker (calcare) delimitata da una specie di cordolo. Da qui si ottengono grappoli da piante di 50 anni di età. La vinificazione, guidata da Pierre Trimbach, è tanto elementare nel procedimento quanto nei materiali: acciaio e legno di grandissime dimensioni. In cantina non c’è bottaia, perché il vino invecchia in bottiglia. Questo millesimo viene messo in commercio prima dell’annata 2008, mostrando di fatto un sorso comunicativo, che racconta di mango, frutto della passione, agrumi, iodio e lemon grass. Enormi capacità d’invecchiamento.

Is it the benchmark of Rieslings? It might be. What is certain is that this label immediately asserts the essence of the grape over the characteristics of the terroir. To the Trimbach’s, the soil, the climate and working in the cantina are the tools that aid in developing the varietal character in relationship with the vintage. The land where this Riesling is cultivated is not an actual clos (a walled vineyard), it is a parcel of the Grand Cru Rosaker (limestone) enclosed by a sort of divider. Here the grapes grow on 50 year old vines. The wine-making guided by Pierre Trimbach is very simple both in its process and the materials: stainless steel and wood casks in very large sizes. There is no cooper in the cantina because the wine is aged in the bottle. This recolte was put on the market before the 2008 vintage demonstrating its aptitude for communication with suggestions of mango, passion fruit, citrus, salt and lemon grass. Perfect for ageing.

L’età dell’azienda è notevole visto che subì una prima partizione a livello di superficie durante la rivoluzione francese. Per anni rimase in possesso dei Las Cases, salvo poi passare sotto la proprietà della famiglia Delon sul finire del XIX secolo. I terreni sono caratterizzati da ghiaia e ciottoli, intervallati da argilla compatta e piuttosto profonda. Passando dalla geologia all’ampelogra-fia, ovvero alle varietà che qui sono coltivate, troviamo Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc e Petit Verdot, per altro ricavati da piante di almeno 40 anni di età. Da sempre uno dei più convincenti Bordeaux della riva sinistra, in questo millesimo si compone di Cabernet Sauvignon, circa il 74%, Merlot e Cabernet Franc, fatti maturare in gran parte (circa l’80%) in legno nuovo. In bocca esordio fruttato di cassis, mora di rovo e mirtillo. Non mancano note di radice di liquirizia, grafite e tabacco Latakia (tabacco di origine siriana che ricorda l’incenso). Tannino vellutato.

Considering that it underwent its initial surface area partitioning during the French Revolution, the age of this vineyard is noteworthy. For years it was owned by the Las Cases’ before passing into the hands of the Delon family at the end of the 19th century. The soil contains gravel and pebbles interspersed with compact rather clayish subsoil. Passing from the geology to the ampelography (the classification of grape varieties), here we find Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot harvested from vines that are at least 40 years old. It has always been one of the most convincing Bordeaux’s from the left bank, this vintage is made from around 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that has been aged for the most part (around 80%) in new wood. In the mouth it provides a fruity explosion of cassis, wild blackberry and blueberry with after tones of liquorice, graphite, Latakia tobacco (a Syrian tobacco that is reminiscent of incense). Velvety tannins.

Se cercate un vino che sintetizzi la tradizione e la modernità del Brunel-lo dovete provare il Tenuta Nuova di Giacomo Neri. Frutto di una grande annata per il Sangiovese di Montalcino, questo vino ha la potenza e il tannino elegante che hanno fatto del Brunello uno dei grandi vini del mondo, ma anche l’esplosione di profumi fruttati (more e lamponi) e speziati e soprattutto una straordinaria bevibilità. Al palato i profumi si ritrovano tutti con un finale di cioccolato amaro, liquirizia e incenso. L’azienda Casanova di Neri è un piccolo grande regno di 500 ettari di cui una sessantina a vigneto. Le uve di sangiovese sono "allevate", da Giacomo Neri e dai figli, nel rispetto massimo della terra. L’evoluzione è in botti piccole. Il Tenuta Nuova 2010 è indiscutibilmente un grande vino e l’impressione è che il meglio lo darà tra una decina d’anni. E per molto, molto tempo...

If you are looking for a wine that is the synthesis of the tradition and modernity of Brunello, you have to try Tenuta Nuova by Giacomo Neri. It is the fruit of a great year for Sangiovese in Montalcino. This wine has the strength and the elegant tannins that have made Brunello one of the world’s great wines. It also has an explosion of fruity aromas (blackberries and raspberries) and spices and it is extraordinarily drinkable. On the palate the aromas can all be recognized with a finale of bitter chocolate, liquorice and incense. The Casanova di Neri estate is a great little kingdom of 500 hectares with around sixty dedicated to vineyard. The Sangiovese grapes are "raised" by Giacomo Neri and his sons with all the due respect for the land. The evolution is in small casks. Tenuta Nuova 2010 is an unquestionably great wine and the impression is that it will be at its best in around ten years. And for a very, very long time...

Dalla ripidissima collina, in totale 8,5 ettari, che sorge proprio dietro l’abitazione di questo produttore nascono vini di grande spessore gustativo ed evolutivo. Il merito va ai terreni caratterizzati in gran parte da quell’ardesia grigia, che assicura al Riesling un profilo speziato e lievemente fumè. Per vendemmiare il vigneto Scharzhofberger Egon Müller è costretto a passare quasi 5 volte ogni stagione, per portare a termine la raccolta di quegli acini che, in base al grado zuccherino, andranno a comporre le diverse etichette ricavate da questo cru. In cantina fermentazioni spontanee, in alcuni casi di un mese, in legno talmente vecchio da poter essere parificato, per cessione aromatica, all’acciaio. La dicitura Gold kapsel individua una particolare, meglio sarebbe dire maniacale, selezione delle uve. Sorso cangiante, morbido senza essere eccessivamente zuccherino, che passa dal garofano essiccato agli agrumi, dal miele di rododendro alle spezie orientali. Capacità d’invecchiamento di almeno 40 anni.

Highly evolved wines with an outstanding taste grow on 8.5 hectares located on a very steep hill behind this producer’s home. The credit goes to the soil which has a prevalence of grey slate that gives the Riesling a spicy and slightly smoky silhouette. To harvest the Scharzhofberger vineyard, Egon Müller has to pick the grapes almost 5 times each season in order to gather the grapes on the basis of their sugar content to create the various labels made at this Cru. In the cantina, it is allowed to ferment spontaneously, in some cases for a month in wooden casks that are so old they could be compared to steel for their level of aromatic transference. The wording Gold Kapsel stands for the special (almost obsessive) selection of the grapes. The flavour is incandescent and soft without being excessively sugary – ranging from dried carnation to citrus and from rhododendron honey to oriental spices. It can be aged for at least 40 years.

Anno dopo anno, i vini di Mauro Mascarello, figlio di quel Giuseppe che dà nome all’etichetta, si confermano ai vertici dell’enologia mondiale. In particolare il Monprivato, grazie alla sua unicità. Frutto di quella collina incantata e calcarea di Castiglione Falletto, si tratta di un Barolo unico per l’inconfondibile trasparenza del colore, la forza e l’equilibrio dei profumi e l’assoluta eleganza. Il cru Monprivato conta su ceppi di Nebbiolo antichissimi che regalano al vino un timbro fruttato e floreale raffinatissimo, ma al tempo stesso una struttura tannica potente e fine. Il tutto in equilibrio con l’acidità che lo rende fresco e perfettamente attrezzato per durare molto a lungo nel tempo. Su tutto vi sorprenderà la spettacolare bevibilità. Un particolare: tutti i vini di Mascarello maturano esclusivamente in botti grandi.

Year after year, Mauro (the ‘Son’ of Giuseppe mentioned in the name) Mascarello’s wines are confirmed at the world summits of oenology and in particular, the Monprivato because it is one of a kind. It is the fruit of that enchanted limestone hill Castiglion Falletto. It is a Barolo that is unique for the unmistakable transparency of its colour, the strength, the balance of the aromas and the total elegance. The Monprivato vineyard depends on very old Nebbiolo vines that give the wine a fruity and incredibly refined floral timbre and at the same time a powerful and refined tannic structure. It is all balanced with the acidity that makes it fresh and perfect for ageing a very long time. It is incredibly drinkable. An interesting fact: all Mascarello wines are aged exclusively in large casks.

Da studente va in California. Qui non scopre il vino, lo conosceva già piuttosto bene visto che la sua famiglia possedeva Pétrus, bensì i vigneti della Napa. Qui Christian Moueix s’innamora del vigneto Napanook, famoso per la qualità delle sue uve sin dagli anni ’50. Negli anni ’80 entra in partnership nella gestione dello stesso vigneto di cui, dal 1995, diventa unico proprietario. Su terreni ghiaiosi e argillosi ancor’oggi sono piantate viti di Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc e Petit Verdot. In cantina si mescola tecnologia, viene utilizzata una selezionatrice ottica che elimina gli elementi indesiderati oltre agli acini non perfettamente maturi con una velocità di 10 tonnellate all’ora, a tradizione. Quest’ultimo aspetto è rappresentato da botti, rigorosamente di rovere francese, utilizzate sia per la fermentazione sia per l’affinamento. Dal 1983 solo 29 annate. Questa 2012 è quasi un assolo di Cabernet Sauvignon (oltre il 90%). Bocca ampia, non eccessivamente concentrata, con tanto cassis, ciliegia sottospirito, menta e cacao.

He went to California as a student. However, he did not discover wine there; he already knew it well considering that his family owned Pétrus, as well as the Napa vineyards. Here Christian Moueix fell in love with Napanook, a vineyard that had been famous for the quality of its wines since the 1950s. In the 1980s he became a partner in the management of that vineyard and then in 1995 he became the sole owner. In the rocky, clay soil we still find vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the cantina there is a blend of technology and tradition with an optical selector that eliminates any undesirable elements or any grapes that are not perfectly mature at the rate of 10 tons per hour. Tradition is expressed by the barrels which are strictly made from French Oak and they are used both for fermentation and ageing. Since 1983 there have only been 29 vintages. The 2012 vintage is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon (over 90%). It has a broad taste that is not excessively concentrated with lots of cassis, cherries under liquor, mint and cocoa.

Nasce per celebrare l’anniversario della morte di uno tra i più famosi nonchè affezionati ammiratori della maison. Solo 14 annate prodotte. Nessun utilizzo di legno in fase di vinificazione. Il gusto viene perciò scolpito da una perfetta maturazione del blend – segretissimo –, anche se fortemente caratterizzato dal Pinot Nero. Non compare nella lista degli "ingredienti" il Pinot Meunier. La lunga maturazione sui lieviti si giova di condizioni ambientali particolari, visto che le cantine della maison sprofondano nel terreno per 35 metri. Alla profondità geologica ne corrisponde anche una a livello gustativo, visto che la temperatura più rigida, quasi 1,5 gradi in meno, favorisce una maturazione del vino, in totale si superano i 12 anni sui lieviti, lenta e regolare. La grande annata, la migliore dal 1996, aiuta la complessità dei profumi, ricchi di nuances di agrumi, mela renetta, anice e resine. In bocca ritorna il bergamotto, il cedro, lo zenzero, il cumino e, a tratti, il tabacco biondo.

It was created to celebrate the anniversary of the death of one of the most famous and greatest fans of the winery. Only 14 vintages have been produced. No wood is used during the wine making. Therefore, the flavour is sculpted by the perfect maturation of the blend (which is absolutely secret), though it is strongly characterized by Pinot Nero. In the list of "ingredients" there is no mention of Pinot Meunier. During the long maturation process, the yeast flourishes under special environmental conditions since the cellars are 35 meters underground. The level of flavour corresponds with the geological depth since the cooler temperature (almost 1.5 degrees lower) aids the ageing process, which requires over 12 years of fermentation, slow and regular. This outstanding year, the best since 1996, aids the complexity of the aromas, rich with nuances of citrus, rennet apples, anise and resins. On the palate there are after tones of bergamot, citron, ginger, cumin and hints of blond tobacco.

L’etichetta fa onore a chi ha fatto tanto per l’azienda, ma anche per i vini del Rodano. Nota sin dal XVI secolo, la cantina ha da sempre dato lustro alle varietà che si coltivano a queste latitudini. Lo dimostra il fatto che sui 100 ettari vitati di Château de Beaucastel sono presenti ben 13 differenti tipologie di grappoli. La tipicità dei terreni, ricchi si sabbia e di "galet", ciottoli di un mare ancestrale che trattengono il calore di giorno per rilasciarlo durante la notte, contribuiscono, insieme al gobelet (sistema di allevamento della vite), a dare identità territoriale ai vini dell’azienda. Utilizzano la biodinamica non per moda, visto che cominciarono nel 1974, ma per volontà. Di tutto questo l’omaggio a Jacques Perrin utilizza in particolare solo vecchie piante di Mourvedre, varietà che coniuga potenza a capacità d’invecchiamento. Profumi di cassis, ciliegia, chiodo di garofano e pepe rosa. La bocca è ampia, potente, resa persino elegante da tocchi di erbe officinali e china.

This label is an honour to a man who did a great deal for this vineyard and for the wines of Rhone. Known since the 16th century, the cantina has always given lustre to the varieties cultivated at these latitudes. This is exemplified by the fact that on the 100 hectares planted at Château de Beaucastel, there are 13 different types of grapes. The rich sandy soil is covered by "galets" (rounded pebbles from an ancient seabed) that capture the heat during the day and release it at night. This and gobelet (the vine training system used) give the territorial identity to the wines from this vineyard, which relies strictly on biodynamic agriculture and not simply because it is fashionable. They chose to adopt the practice in 1974. The homage to Jacques Perrin is made from the older plants of Mourvedre, a variety that blends strength and the ability to be aged. With aromas of cassis, cherry, cloves and pink peppercorns, the taste is plentiful, powerful and even elegant thanks to the hints of herbs and cinchona.

La zona, siamo poco più a sud della blasonata Beaune, pur avendo molti punti di contatto proprio con la Borgogna classica, in particolar modo a livello di suoli, ha sempre sofferto di una sindrome da Cenerentola. Il Domaine parte, di fatto, nel primo dopoguerra, si consolida sotto la guida di Paul che lo dota di numerose parcelle situate in alcune zone particolarmente vocate e, di recente, era il 2006, passa sotto la guida di Marie, figlia di Paul. I terreni, a prevalenza calcarei con intersezioni di argilla bruna, sono condotti utilizzando "soltanto" buonsenso. La stessa cosa accade in cantina, dove il legno, per i bianchi solo il 20% è nuovo, si usa senza eccessi. Il Premier Cru la Pucelle mostra, nonostante un’annata faticosa, profumi di agrumi (bergamotto, lime e limone di Costiera), accompagnati da delicatezze di fiori bianchi, in particolar modo zagara, e golosità di miele di arancio. A queste sensazioni l’assaggio aggiunge note di mandorla verde, zabaione, verbena e menta.

This area, which is slightly further south than the well known Beaune, has many points in common with the classic Burgundy, in particular the level of the land, and it has always suffered from a Cinderella complex. The Domaine began after the First World War and it was consolidated under the guidance of Paul who expanded it with numerous plots that are located in areas that are particularly well suited. Recently in 2006, it passed under the guidance of Marie (Paul’s daughter). The lands are mainly limestone with sections of brown clay and they are cultivated using "strict" common sense. The same logic is applied in the cantina where wood is used but not to excess: only 20% of the wood used for the white wines is new. The Premier Cru la Pucelle, despite the difficult year, has scents of citrus (bergamot, lime and lemons from the Amalfi Coast), accompanied by delicate white flowers, in particular orange blossoms and luscious orange honey. Ecco un’altra conferma. Anzi ecco un grande vino che fa un ulteriore passo avanti fino ad entrare nella top ten. È l’Oreno, il "taglio bordolese" che Antonio Moretti, imprenditore della moda e del lusso con la passione per la campagna, segue come fosse uno dei suoi figli. L’Oreno 2102 ha imboccato la strada della maturità grazie all’armonia del blend (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon e un tocco di Petit Verdot) e la simbiosi con quella terra ricca di calcare e argilla sulle colline dell’Aretino. Nel vino si avvertono l’eleganza morbida del Merlot, la struttura del Cabernet e il tocco del Petit Verdot coi suoi tannini intensi e raffinati. Il risultato è un vino che esplode di profumi freschi e profondi e un gusto complesso e fine di frutta rossa sotto spirito, spezie, cioccolato fondente, liquirizia, una bella sapidità e una fresca nota balsamica.

The 2012 Oreno is on the road to maturity thanks to the harmonic blend of grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot) and the symbiosis of that soil rich in limestone and clay on the hills around Arezzo. The wine has the elegant softness of Merlot, the structure of Cabernet and a touch of Petit Verdot with its intense and refined tannins. I baroli di Luciano Sandrone hanno un timbro riconoscibile. Sono il legame con la tradizione austera e la grande spinta verso la modernità. Uvaggio di Sémillon (76%) e Sauvignon (24%) fatti fermentare in legno nuovo. Profumi di gelsomino, pesca, melone bianco ed erbe aromatiche. Bocca aristocratica, complessa, unica.

Up until the 2009 vintage, it was bottled as Château La Ville Haut-Brion. Not many more than 6000 bottles were produced for the 2013 vintage. It was a difficult year, but the resulting wine is outstanding. The grape content includes 76% Sémillon and 24% Sauvignon fermented in new wood casks. With notes of jasmine, peach, white melon and aromatic herbs, it has an aristocrat complex and distinct flavour.

Una vinificazione che utilizza acciaio in fermentazione e legno, poco, in affinamento, non va considerata la responsabile del carattere di questo Syrah. Il merito della po-tenza fruttata domata, si fa per dire, da tocchi di erbe officinali e incenso, si deve a piante vecchie e ai terreni granitici da cui si ricava questa etichetta.

The Voge family has been producing quality wines since the 1950s. The winery uses stainless steel for fermentation and some wood for ageing though it should not be considered as being the element responsible for the character of this Syrah. That comes from the powerful fruitiness somewhat tamed by hints of aromatic herbs and incense, which comes from the aged plants and the granite soil where the grapes from this label are grown.

Un uomo di mezza età con una leggera balbuzie che parla la lingua del vino con una proprietà di linguaggio, enologico ovviamente, senza pari. Questo è Sylvain Cathiard. Non siamo di fronte ad uno Chardonnay, ma ad un insolito, per queste latitudini, Pinot Bianco. In bocca tanta mela granny smith, pompelmo, lychee, ma anche timo, verbena e coriandolo. Quasi marino, sul finale, grazie ad una nota di scoglio.

Philippe only works with live materials and it does not matter whether we are talking about soil, grapes or indigenous yeasts. In the cantina he only uses Burgundian ingredients. We are not dealing with a Chardonnay in this case, but with a Pinot Blanc which is unusual for this latitude. Si tratta dell’Herzù, una delle migliori bottiglie in assoluto nel rapporto qualità prezzo (si trova sotto i 20 euro). Germano lo produce a Serralunga d’Alba con Riesling Renano in purezza. Di un bellissimo colore giallo paglierino con riflessi verdolini, l’Herzù ha acidità (leggi freschezza) e una bella tensione. Al gusto è pieno e minerale con un finale di spettacolare sapidità.

Un vino che è l’immagine stessa di una regione: la Sardegna. Il Turriga degli Argiolas, una delle tante straordinarie famiglie del vino italiano, è un punto di riferimento. L’annata 2010 ci restituisce una bottiglia di qualità altissima. Il combinato di Cannonau, Carignano, Bovale sardo e Malvasia si traduce in un vino complesso e fine che al naso rivela sentori di frutta rossa matura, mirtilli e more in particolare. Al gusto escono le speziature, il cioccolato amaro, la liquirizia e una bella nota di erbe officinali. Grande la persistenza.

Il Mâcon non è una succursale della Borgogna. Lo dimostra questo pro-duttore che arriva nel ‘76 dal Belgio, per coltivare le ripide colline del vigneto Le Chavigne. Il suolo, ricco di argilla e piccole pietre, dona al vino energia e concentrazione. In bocca mostra succosità agrumata, accompagnata da note di acacia e miele di arancio. Finale sapido e lievemente fumè.

Mâcon is not a branch of Burgundy and this wine producer proves it. He arrived in 1976 from Belgium to cultivate the steep hills of the Le Chavigne vineyard. The soil is rich in clay and small rocks that concentrate the wine and give it energy. On the palate it tastes of juicy citrus accompanied by tones of acacia and orange honey. Nel 2013 le etichette top di gamma non sono state prodotte a seguito di una tempesta che, a giugno, ha distrutto molte gemme. Per questo i grappoli superstiti dei cru migliori sono andati a completare i vini impropriamente chiamati "base". Non fa eccezione questo Riesling secco ma con residuo zuccherino (58 gr/l), dal bel tratto agrumato, speziato (zenzero e coriandolo) e salato.

In 2013 the top range of labels was not produced due to a storm in June that destroyed many buds. Vino particolarissimo, che è il racconto materializzato di una filosofia. L’architetto goriziano Damijan Podversic sceglie una lunga macerazione sulle bucce e la mano leggerissima in cantina. Il vino ha poi un’evoluzione in botti da 20-30 ettolitri e altri 6 mesi in bottiglia. Il risultato è un bianco ambrato e complesso con profumi che spaziano dalla frutta candita alle olive taggiasche e un gusto morbido, profondo e minerale. Il territorio e l’aromaticità della Malvasia ne escono esaltati.

This is a very particular wine that is the materialised story of a philosophy. Damijan Podversic, an architect from Gorizia, chooses an extended maceration with the grape skins and a very light hand in the cantina. The wine is then aged in barrels measuring 20-30 hectolitres and then another 6 months in the bottle. The result is complex amber white with aromas that range from candied fruit to Taggiasca olives. It has a soft, profound and mineral taste. The territory and the aroma of the Malvasia are exalted.

La famiglia arriva dalla Scozia secoli fa per una guerra di cui nessuno si ricorda più. Decidono tuttavia di rimanere qui per coltivare (32 ettari) solo Sauvignon su terreni ricchi di silex. Questo HD (haut densitè) mette in risalto un'immagine gustativa molto nitida, facendo ricordare, in bocca, il pompelmo, la pesca bianca, la susina mirabella, il cumino, il sale e l’anice stellato.

The family arrived from Scotland centuries ago due to a war that nobody remembers any longer. In any case they decided to remain here and cultivate 32 hectares of pure Sauvignon on lands with silex soil. This HD (haut densité) has a very clear taste. On the palate it is reminiscent of grapefruit, white peaches Mirabelle plums, cumin, salt and star anise.

Guy Bossard, oggi affiancato da Fred Van Herck, non smette di credere nei propri dogmi sul Muscadet. Solo uva varietà Melon de Bourgogne fatta crescere secondo i principi dell’agricoltura biodinamica –li segue sin dagli anni ’90-, fermentazioni spontanee e nessuna filtrazione. Il suo vino cre-sciuto su granito sa di ananas, cedro, lime, salicornia, finocchietto e iodio.

Guy Bossard, who today works alongside Fred Van Herck, has not stopped believing in his own dogma regarding Muscadet. He only uses Melon de Bourgogne grapes that have been grown according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture (which he has been using since the 1990s), spontaneous fermentation and no filtering. Prima di proprietà del bisnonno dell’inventore de "Il Piccolo principe", poi, era la metà degli anni ’50, della famiglia Zuger. Nulla è cambiato se non quello che doveva essere migliorato. Classico uvaggio bordolese che tuttavia a Margaux assume un profilo quasi femminile. Lo si evince da un tratto fruttato, tanta lavanda e rosa, che s’innesta su note di mirtillo, mora e grafite.

Ora dalle cantine Polvanera escono bottiglie di qualità. Tra queste in particolare il Primitivo 17 2011. Un vino complesso, di grande spessore, ma anche elegante e bevibile. Al naso emergono profumi di frutta nera, spezie e foglie di tè. Al gusto colpiscono mineralità, tannini delicati e la profondità.

Il blend privilegia, siamo attorno al 65%, il Merlot, seguito, in percentuale, da Cabernet Franc e Cabernet Sauvignon. Affinamento in legno quasi total-mente nuovo per 30 mesi. Il risultato è un vino dai profumi di frutti rossi in-tensamente speziati. La speziatura la ritroviamo, anche se in versione me-glio svolta e più complessa, in bocca. Finale lungo che ricorda la liquirizia.

This blend has a majority of Merlot (around 65%) followed in percentage by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged in almost entirely new wood for 30 months. The result is a wine with aromas of intensely spicy red fruits. The spiciness returns on the palate in a better and more complex version. The persistent after tones are reminiscent of liquorice.

L’azienda ruota attorno ad una vigna da film. Nessuna finzione ma solo il fatto che per anni fu di proprietà di uno dei capi di produzione della MGM. Il dolby surround, gustativo naturalmente, è merito di una parcella, diremo d’essai, visto che risale al 1945. 85% di legno nuovo in fermentazione. Sor-so generoso con tanta frutta (mora e mirtillo) e spezie (liquirizia e vaniglia). Tannino potente.

This winery revolves around a movie-style vineyard. There is nothing fiction about it, but for years it belonged to one of the production directors of MGM. The taste is absolutely Dolby Surround thanks to a special ‘artistic’ plot of vines that date back to 1945. For fermentation, 85% new wood is used. Prevalenza di Cabernet Sauvignon (65%). Non mancano tuttavia le altre va-rietà tipiche del bordolese. In vigna la biodinamica da più lavoro ma, come dimostra l’assaggio, anche tante soddisfazioni. Bocca ampia, elegante, forse un po’ morbida ma comunque di carattere. Tanto cassis, sia fresco sia in con-fettura, ma anche note di liquirizia, vaniglia e legno di cedro. Tannino di razza.

The biodynamic vineyard requires extra work, but it also provides a great deal of satisfaction which is reflected in the taste. On the palate it is full, elegant and possibly a little soft but with character. It has tones of fresh and jellied cassis, as well as hints of liquorice, vanilla and cedar wood with pedigreed tannins.

The most important divinity of the Egyptian pantheon gives its name in this case to an "earthly" wine that is grown in Ebenezer – the most temperate part of the Barossa Valley. Non un monovitigno, anche se la prevalenza del Riesling si sente. Ad emergere semmai è la combinazione dei suoli (marne e sabbia). Il tratto affumicato esplode letteralmente in bocca. Lentamente si percepiscono note di spezie (curry e cardamomo), seguite da resine e da una nota fruttata matura che fa presupporre un po’ di muffa nobile in vendemmia. Enormi capacità d’invecchiamento.

The combination of the marl and sandy soil stands out and the smokiness literally explodes in your mouth. Slowly the spicy notes emerge (curry and cardamom) followed by resins and a mature fruit tone that brings to mind botrytised grapes during harvest. Absolutely perfect for ageing.

La "sincerità aromatica", tratto distintivo di questo Brunello, è ottenuta in primo luogo attraverso il non interventismo sia in vigna sia in cantina. "Aromatic sincerity" is the distinctive trait of this Brunello which is created firstly by an attitude of non-interventionism in the vineyard as well as the cantina. The aroma is still a little tight but it is balanced by a generous year that allows it to reveal aromas of geranium and dark fruits. Le piante di Chardonnay godono delle influenze del Pacifico e di una vinifi-cazione di stile Borgognone realizzata con lieviti indigeni. Al naso sembra un Mersault. In bocca dopo un esordio che richiama il fiore bianco, il lime e il bergamotto, sopraggiunge una nota fumé, accompagnata da quelle sfuma-ture di frutta secca (nocciola e mandorla) che ritroviamo "citate" in etichetta.

These Chardonnay plants flourish under the influence of the Pacific Ocean and a Burgundy style winemaking process with indigenous yeasts. The aroma is reminiscent of Mersault, while the taste is a debut of white flowers, lime and bergamot followed by a slightly smoky note accompanied by tones of nuts (hazelnuts and almonds) that are also "listed" on the label.

Anzi no, perché questa etichetta a base Muscat de Frontignan rap-presenta un grande mito enologico indipendentemente dai paragoni. Acini appassiti in pianta. Nel 2009 la vendemmia termina ad aprile. La fermen-tazione dura addirittura un anno. Tanti agrumi canditi, cera d’api, miele, mandorla e sandalo.

If the world were upside down, this wine would probably be called Yquem. Or maybe not because this label made from Muscat de Frontignan represents a great oenological star regardless of comparisons. The grapes are dried naturally on the plant and in 2009 the harvest ended in April. It is fermented for an entire year and it has tones of candied citrus, beeswax, honey, almonds and sandalwood.

This is another great German wine born along the riverside in Rhine. This incredibly pure Riesling grows in soil that is rich in slate and quartz. There is a lot of peach, pineapple, passion fruit, cumin and hazelnut in the taste and it is very persistent on the palate.

Il Faro è qui prodotto utilizzando solo autoctoni isolani. Morbido, avvolgente e generoso. In bocca ricorda la prugna, il tabacco, il cuoio dolce e il chiodo di garofano. Tannino nobile.

Let us not get lost in preconceptions which say that Sicilian wines do not express fineness unless they use international grape varieties because this wine ‘sheds light’ on that concept. Faro (lighthouse in Italian) is produced using only autochthonous grapes from the island. It is soft, embracing and generous. On the palate it is reminiscent of plums, tobacco, sweet leather and cloves, with noble tannins.

Barolo celebre e giustamente celebrato, in versione 2010 (grande annata) addirittura osannato. Naso tutto d’un pezzo con nuances di spezie orientali e terra umida. La bocca trae spunto dal territorio, visto che il vigneto Cascina Francia è domiciliato a Serralunga. Quindi tanta purezza ma anche qualche durezza, come ad esempio quella portata in dote dall’abbondante patrimonio tannico.

This is a famous and justly acclaimed Barolo - the 2010 vintage (a great year) is even extolled. The aroma is firm with nuances of oriental spices and damp earth. The flavour comes from the territory and the Cascina Francia vineyard is located in Serralunga. Therefore it is incredibly pure with a few hard notes like those that come from its abundant tannic patrimony.

Ripabella come il Rodano? Il passaporto farebbe propendere per il no. Di tutt’altro avviso l’assaggio. Al naso tanta frutta scura, su cui si adagia un ricco ricamo di spezie, in particolar modo piccanti, accompagnate da belle evidenze di tabacco. Bocca potente, densa, ricca di sensazioni che ricordano la mora, il rabarbaro, il ginger e il pepe nero. Il finale, minerale, gli conferisce eleganza.

Is Ripabella on the Rhone? The passport would say no. However, the taste says the exact opposite. There is a lot of dark fruit in the aroma with a rich spicy overlay – more specifically, piquant notes accompanied by a clear tobacco tone. On the palate it is powerful, dense and filled with sensations reminiscent of blackberry, rhubarb, ginger and black pepper. The mineral finale gives it elegance.

Appena nata (1999) questa azienda ha immediatamente deciso di seguire i principi della biodinamica. Il frutto è perciò al centro del concetto che il Domaine ha sul vino. La fase di affinamento, effettuata in legno nuovo, non si prolunga mai oltre i 16 mesi. Il risultato è un vino aristocratico anche se, in questa fase, ancora un tantino troppo ancorato a suggestioni fruttate.

This very young winery (1999) decided from the very start to follow the principles of biodynamic cultivation. The fruit is at the centre of this Domaine’s concept of wine. It is aged in new wood but never more than 16 months. The result is an aristocratic wine although in this phase it is still a little too anchored to fruity tones.

I terreni ricchi di silicio e sabbia conferiscono a questo Chardonnay elegan-za e sapidità. La bella esposizione e i venti freschi del fiume ne facilitano la perfetta maturazione e la sanità delle uve. Solo 8 mesi in legno durante la fase di affinamento. Prende il nome della gens Figeacus che abitava qui nel II secolo. Il trio clas-sico di uve bordolesi in questa etichetta dà maggiore spazio ai due Cabernet. It takes its name from the Figeacus gens that lived here in the second century. The classic trio of Bordeaux grapes in this label gives more importance to the two Cabernets. It is aged in the classic style for 18 months in new wood. It has aromas of cassis, moss, pink peppercorns and liquorice root. The flavour adds an evident but not invasive tone of leather, with sweet tannins.

In pieno stile Roederer questo rosé viene realizzato per sanguinamento (saignée). Il resto degli "ingredienti" sono: prevalenza di Pinot Nero (62%) di Cumières, 7% di vini affinati in legno, il rifiuto di svolgere la fermenta-zione malolattica e almeno 4 anni sui lieviti. Il risultato è uno champagne che richiama il melograno, il lampone, l’amarena e il biscotto alla cannella.

In true Roederer style, this rosé is made through saignée (skin contact). The rest of the "ingredients" are: a majority of Pinot Nero (62%) and Cumières, 7% wines aged in wood, the refusal to use malolactic fermentation and at least 4 years of yeast fermentation. The result is champagne that is reminiscent of raspberry, black cherry and cinnamon cookies.

The flavour is full, complex, aristocratic and even agile.

Cabernet Sauvignon e Merlot allevati nell’agro romano. Detta così dice poco, anche se questo vino individua un grande ritorno per una storica eti-chetta nazionale per anni conosciuta ed apprezzata a livello internazionale. Profumi di frutti rossi maturi, chiodo di garofano e tabacco Kentucky. Bocca fruttata, avvolgente, densa, a tratti sapida. Tannini estratti con cura.

Vitigno tipico atesino che in questo caso cresce su terreni argillosi. Il suolo contribuisce a donargli spessore senza appesantirne l’aromaticità; merito anche di una vinificazione realizzata esclusivamente ricorrendo all’acciaio. Al naso tanta rosa, frutta tropicale, molto evidente la nota di mango e miele. In bocca diventa ancora più complesso grazie a nuances di lavanda e mandarino.

This vine is common in the Alto Adige area and in this case it is grown on clay soil. The land contributes to giving it body without making the aroma heavy. That is also thanks to the fact that the wine is made completely in stainless steel. The aromas include rose, tropical fruit with a strong mango influence, and honey. On the palate it is even more complex thanks to nuances of lavender and mandarin.

This wine producer justly and obstinately continues his personal strategy of promoting the Gaglioppo grape variety which is at the base of Cirò wines. This label is aged in wood with representative aromas. The flavour speaks of distinct character – tones of mulberry, blackberry, liquorice and graphite. The finale includes cocoa beans. Thick tannins and an overwhelming mouth feel.

I cinque ettari scarsi dedicati al Tempranillo si giovano di terreni sabbio-si, ricchi di argilla in profondità, cui si somma un’età ragguardevole delle piante, in alcuni casi messe a dimora sul finire dell’800. Legno nuovo per 20 mesi in affinamento. Profumi ampi di sottobosco e spezie dolci. Sorso potente, generoso per quantità e qualità dei descrittori. Tannini di carattere.

Barely five hectares are dedicated to these Tempranillo grapes, which grow on sandy soil with rich clay subsoil. The plants are considerably old and in some cases they were planted at the end of the 1800s. The wine is aged for 20 months in new wood and it has a full aroma of forest underbrush and sweet spices. The taste is powerful, full and rich in its quantity and quality of descriptors, with distinctive tannins.

Basata sul millesimo 2005 e in particolar modo sullo Chardonnay (52%). La sboccatura ritardata dona al vino complessità ulteriore. Il dosaggio, praticamente assente, garantisce un sorso con tanti agrumi, sia freschi sia canditi, spezie (coriandolo e anice stellato) e quella persistente sapidità che gli conferisce ottime doti di beva. Non teme gli abbinamenti con i piatti di carne.

Based on the 2005 vintage and in particular on Chardonnay (52%), the late disgorging gives this wine a greater complexity. There is practically no dosage giving it a taste of fresh and candied citrus, spices (coriander and star anise) and a persistent flavour that imbues it with drinkability. It is perfect to pair with meat dishes.

Nebbiolo fatto fermentare in acciaio e successivamente affinato in legno di grandi dimensioni (30 hl) per circa trenta mesi. Il colore rubino fa da preambolo cromatico ad un naso che ricorda il frutto scuro, il chiodo di garofano, la polvere di cannella e la terra bagnata. Quest’ultima sensazione ritorna anche in bocca, salvo declinarsi in versione floreale grazie ad una nota terrosa di violetta.

This Nebbiolo has been fermented in steel and then later aged in large size (30 hl) wood barrels for around thirty months. The ruby colour is a chromatic preamble to the aroma which is reminiscent of dark fruits, cloves, ground cinnamon and damp earth. The last sensation returns on the palate in a more floral version thanks to an earthy violet tone.

Il nome dell’azienda rimanda, in lingua magiara, al rumore degli zoccoli dei cavalli sul selciato davanti alla cantina. Il numero di puttonyos, nella realtà i vecchi contenitori in cui era trasportata l’uva botritizzata, indica il livello di dolcezza del vino. La base è l’uva Furmint completata da varietà Harslevelu e Muscat. Dolce ma senza eccessi, ricorda il dattero e la mandorla.

The name of this vineyard in the Magyar language refers to the sound of horse hooves on the gravel in front of the cantina. The number of puttonyos, which in reality refers to the number of old containers in which the botrytised grapes were transported, indicates the level of sweetness of the wine. The base is Furmint grapes with the addition of Harslevelu and Muscat varieties. It is sweet but not excessively and it is reminiscent of dates and almonds.

Venti ettari condotti, da anni, in biodinamica. Di storia ne hanno tanta, visto che i Moueix sono qui ininterrottamente dagli anni ’30. Da vigne con almeno 35 primavere sulle spalle ecco un vino composto da Merlot, quasi due terzi, e Cabernet Franc. Profumi di fragolina di bosco, rabarbaro e cannella. Bocca agile, non troppo concentrata ma di grande bevibilità e prontezza.

These twenty hectares have been cultivated using biodynamic methods for years. The cantina has quite a history considering that the Mouiex family has been here since the 1930s without interruption. The plants are at least 35 years old and the wine is composed of almost two-thirds Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It has aromas of wild strawberries, rhubarb and cinnamon. It is agile in the mouth, not too concentrated, but very drinkable and immediate.

Pasqualino (Di Prisco) fa vini da sette bellezze. Lo dimostra già da numerose vendemmie, in particolar modo con le bacche "pallide" della tradizione campana. Esempio ne è questo Fiano dalla "bellezza", e bontà, cristallina, vinificato esclusivamente ricorrendo all’acciaio. Profumi di fiori di campo, frutta a pasta gialla matura e timo. Bocca generosa, tipica e persino elegante.

Pasqualino (Di Prisco) makes outstanding wines. That has been demonstrated over numerous harvests and it is especially true for the traditional "pallid" grapes of the Campania region. This Fiano is no exception with incredible crystalline bounty, made by using exclusively stainless steel. The aromas include wildflowers, mature yellow fruits and thyme. On the palate it is representative and even elegant.

Forse il più elegante tra i vini dolci botritizzati della zona di Bordeaux, tanto è vero che già Thomas Jefferson ne tesseva le lodi e ne vuotava i bicchieri. Prevalenza di Sémillon (75%). Affina per 18 mesi in legno in gran parte nuovo. Profumi di fiori bianchi (neroli e gelsomino) agrumi maturi e spezie (ginger e zafferano). Bocca morbida, bilanciata da una buona tensione agrumata.

This might be the most elegant sweet botrytised wine of the Bordeaux area. In fact even Thomas Jefferson spoke highly of it and drank it enthusiastically. With a prevalence of Sémillon (75%), it is aged for 18 months in mostly new wood. It has aromas of white flowers (neroli and jasmine), mature citrus and spices (ginger and saffron). Soft and balanced on the palate with a nice citrus influence.

La recente scomparsa di Serge Hochar non spegnerà di certo la carica vitale, e vitata, di un’azienda che ha superato la guerra del Libano oltre ai precon-cetti, forse più pericolosi, come quelli che etichettano i vini libanesi come poco fini. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault e Carignan affinati in legno per un anno. Sorso ricco di eleganti tocchi speziati e rinfrescanti sensazioni fruttate.

The recent passing of Serge Hochar will certainly not extinguish the vital winemaking energy of this company which has overcome the war in Lebanon as well as other possibly even more dangerous preconceptions such as those who label Lebanese wines as not being very fine. It includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan refined in wood for a year. It has a rich taste with elegant spicy touches and refreshing fruity sensations.

L’azienda nasce all’inizio degli anni ’80 a 100 Km da Adelaide. Furono i primi ad introdurre a queste latitudini il tappo a vite. L’innovazione si ferma qui, per-ché tanto in vigna quanto in cantina Grosset va sempre sul "classico". Pro-fumi di lime, cedro e verbena. Il sorso trae il suo lato morbido dagli agrumi, qui leggermente canditi, affiancandogli un lato più austero di matrice iodata.

This vineyard was founded at the beginning of the 1980s about 100 Km from Adelaide. They were the first to introduce the screw cap closure. The innovations stop here because both in the vineyard and in the cantina, Grosset always goes "classic". It has aromas of lime, citron and verbena. The flavour has a soft side influenced by slightly candied citrus as well as a more austere side with hints of iodine.

Affina per un anno in legno talmente grande (25 hl) da non sentirlo. Il soggior-no breve lascia intatta la tipicità del vitigno, conferendogli piuttosto un’im-pronta aromatica più definita e precisa, che si manifesta con profumi di fiori di tiglio, pesca, albicocca e nocciola. Bocca materica, generosa, molto tipica, che non lesina certo in quanto a finezza. Il finale ricorda la mandorla.

It is aged for a year in wooden barrels that are so large (25hl) you cannot taste the wood. The short aging process leaves the taste of the grapes intact giving it a more defined and precise aromatic model that has aromas of linden flowers, peach, apricot, and hazelnut. On the palate it is textured, generous and very representative without lacking refinement. The finale brings almonds to mind.

Il veliero in etichetta mostra che in mezzo al mare un antenato si distinse a fianco del re di Francia come ammiraglio. Passò dall’acqua al vino una volta tornato sulla terra ciottolosa di Graves. Dal ’96 l’azienda appartiene alla famiglia Bonnie. Base Sauvignon per un vino che profuma di erbe alpi-ne, kiwi e agrumi. Bocca tesa che ricorda la mela verde e la pesca bianca.

The sailboat on the label shows an ancestor in the sea who distinguished himself as an admiral beside the kind of France. He went from water to wine as soon as he returned to the rocky soil in Graves. Since 1996 the vineyard has belonged to the Bonnie family. With a base of Sauvignon, it is a wine that has aromas of alpine herbs, kiwi and citrus. It is tense on the palate and reminiscent of green apples and white peaches.

Prevalenza di Chardonnay completata da Pinot Bianco e Pinot Nero. Ri-posa per 48 mesi sui lieviti, senza poi essere "corretto" da dosaggio. La conseguenza è che nel bicchiere ci si ritrova davanti ad un perlage sottile, profumato di pompelmo, lime e mela granny smith. L’assaggio non lesina in note agrumate, cui fanno seguito leggere speziature (pepe bianco) e un’inconfondibile nota di biscotto.

It uses a prevalence of Chardonnay along with Pinot Bianco and Pinot Nero. It is aged for 48 months with the yeast without being "corrected’" by dosage. The result in the glass is a subtle perlage that has aromas of grapefruit, lime and granny smith apples. There is no lack of citrus in the taste and that is followed by a slight spiciness (white peppercorns) and an unmistakeable taste of cookies.

Chardonnay e Grechetto identificano uno dei grandi bianchi italiani che, in anticipo sui tempi, la prima annata fu della metà degli anni ’80, non ha mai dimenticato di declinare la propria territorialità, associandola ad eleganza e longevità. Azienda piuttosto giovane della Languedoc che si dedica in particolar modo ai vitigni autoctoni del territorio. In questo rosso troviamo Mourvedre, Syrah e Cabernet Sauvignon allevati con il sistema del gobelet su terreni poveri. Affina in legno per due anni. Sorso vero, in gioventù un po’ introverso, che ricorda il cassis, il rabarbaro, il chiodo di garofano, il pepe e il tabacco.

This is a rather young company from Languedoc that is particularly dedicated to the autochthonous vines from the area. In this red we find Mourvedre, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon trained with the gobelet system and grown in poor soil. It is refined in wood for two years. The taste is sincere, a little introverted when it is young, with hints of cassis, rhubarb, cloves, pepper and tobacco.

In una terra martoriata dalla guerra come la Siria, la famiglia Saadé continua a far vino. Assemblaggio di Chardonnay e Sauvignon. Questa etichetta gode di terreni ricchi di calcare e argilla, ma anche di quell’attitudine enologica di matrice europea, portata in dote da consulenti francesi. Sorso floreale, tanta zagara, agrumato (pompelmo e cedro) e, a tratti, persino mentolato.

Even in a land that has been battered by war like Syria, the Saadé family continues to make wine. A blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon, this label comes from soil that is rich in limestone and clay. It is also influenced by European wine philosophies thanks to French consultants. The flavour is floral with lots of orange blossom, citrus (grapefruit and citron) and at times it is even mentholated.

The taste is direct, almost austere and not hidden by any sugary maquillage (9 gr/l).

La famiglia Pizzato arriva dall’Italia attorno agli anni ’80. Oggi coltivano 42 ettari, i terreni sono caratterizzati da calcare e basalto, in prevalenza dedi-cati alle varietà a bacca rossa. Proprio la conformazione geologica influenza, in positivo, questo Merlot. Oltre alle classiche note di frutta rossa e cacao, durante l’assaggio compaiono evidenze di grafite e china. Tannino morbido.

The Pizzato family arrived from Italy in the 1980s. Today they cultivate 42 hectares. The soil is characterized by limestone and basalt and it is mostly dedicated to red grape varieties. The geological conformation positively influences this Merlot. Beyond the classic notes of red fruits and cocoa, there are even tones of graphite and quinine, with soft tannins.

Colore da nobile bollicina d’Oltralpe, ma la varietà Sorbara dà sempre vita a colori tenui. Naso e bocca ci riportano, giustamente, verso l’Emilia e verso quel giacimento varietale che è la sottozona del Cristo. Profumi di chinotto, melograno e lampone. Bocca snella, rinfrescante, a tratti tipicamente agru-mata, dotata di un bell’allungo e di enormi capacità di abbinamento a tavola.

It has the noble colour of bubbly wines from the other side of the Alps - the Sorbara variety always gives rise to pale colours. The aromas and the flavours bring us back to the Emilia area and towards the varietal growing district which is the Cristo subzone. The aromas include citrus myrtifolia (Italian "chinotto"), pomegranate and raspberry. It is light and refreshing on the palate. At times it has representative tones of citrus with a nice aftertaste and it pairs incredibly well with lots of foods.
