Costituita nel 1821, e tuttora controllata al 100% dalla famiglia fondatrice, è una delle più antiche aziende europee nel campo della produzione dei liquori. Trasferita l’attività a Torreglia nel 1947 a seguito di ragioni belliche, ricopre ora un ruolo leader nel settore dei liquori dolci, rappresentando una delle pochissime marche presenti in quasi tutti i mercati mondiali. L’azienda è proprietaria di 20.000 piante di ciliege marasche, coltivate in marascheti industriali che rappresentano l’unica installazione agricola del genere nell’intera Unione Europea. Tradizionali e moderni impianti di distillazione ed estese cantine di invecchiamento in legno assicurano elevati standard qualitativi.

Established in 1821, and still 100% controlled by the founding family, Luxardo is one of the oldest European firms producing liqueurs. Transferred to Torreglia (Padova) in 1947 due to the consequences of the Second World War, it is now a leader in the liqueurs industry and one of the few proprietary brands present in almost all the international markets. The firm owns over 20.000 Marasca Luxardo cherry trees, cultivated in industrial nurseries and is the only company with such agricultural installation in the European Union.

THE HISTORY OF THE TROPHY LUXARDOThe Luxardo Trophy was established in 1955 through the initiative of Franco Luxardo, sabre fencer of the “Accademia Comini”, who fenced for Italy from 1959 through 1968. At that time, the World Cup did not exist, neither did other international sabre fencing competitions, apart from the annual World Championships and the Santelli Cup (Italy-Hungary).

Franco Luxardo’s idea was the result of the need to create new international events. With the co-operation of his father Giorgio, a former fencer, and the F.I.S., he organised the first three editions of the trophy (1955/56/59), for Italians only, held at the facilities of the Padova University. The success of the event, in which 120 to 150 athletes took part in every edition, led to participation by foreign sabre fencers. This was possible when the competitions were transferred from 1961 to 1975 to the Palazzetto Tre Pini of Padua, and from 1976 to 1998 to the Palasport of Abano Terme, since then returning to Padua. On special occasions the finals were hosted in prestige locations such as the historic Caffè Pedrocchi (1963), the medieval Palazzo della Ragione (1972,1973,1996) and the Opera Theater Giuseppe Verdi (from 1998 through 2009). The greatest athlete consecrated by the “Luxardo” is still Victor Sidiak, a Russian, winner of five editions (1969/71/72/74/77), closely followed by the Italian Michele Maffei (1973/76/79/80) and by Hungary’s Imre Gedoevari (1978/82/83/84).

From 2002, after the 6th trophy was awarded to Stanislav Pozdniakov from Russia, the 7th trophy was reserved to the fencer who wins the competition three times, including non-consecutive wins. The 7th trophy is a valuable artistic work by jeweller-sculptor Massimo Antonelli.

2007 was a five-star year for the Trofeo Luxardo, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary. A gala dinner party in the medieval Palazzo della Ragione hosted old, less-old and young sabre fencers from the world over. A book by Gastone Gal and Maria Luigia Randi was published for the occasion: it’s a fascinating braiding of world events as the Trophy evolves and is reflected, and contains many personal flash-memoirs of participants across the decades.

LA STORIA DEL TROFEO LUXARDOIl Trofeo Luxardo nasce nel 1955 per iniziativa di Franco Luxardo, sciabolatore dell’“Accademia Comini”, maglia azzurra dal 1959 al 1968. All’epoca non esistevano la Coppa del Mondo ne’ altre competizioni internazionali di sciabola al di fuori dei Campionati del Mondo annuali e della Coppa Santelli (Italia-Ungheria).

L’idea di Franco Luxardo nasce dunque dalla necessità di creare nuove occasioni di incontro fra atleti nazionali e stranieri, e con la collaborazione del padre Giorgio, ex schermidore, e della F.I.S. organizza le prime tre edizioni del trofeo (1955/56/59), riservate ai soli italiani, presso gli impianti del Cus Padova. Il successo della manifestazione, che arriva a contare tra i 120 e 150 atleti per ogni edizione, consente la partecipazione anche degli sciabolatori stranieri, con il trasferimento delle gare dal 1961 al 1975 al Palazzetto Tre Pini di Padova e dal 1976 fino al 1998 al Palasport di Abano Terme per ritornare poi a Padova.

Le finali, in occasioni particolari, sono state ospitate in ambienti di prestigio, quali lo storico Caffè Pedrocchi (1963), il mediovale palazzo della Ragione (1972, 1973, 1996) e il Teatro Verdi (1998-2009). Il più grande atleta consacrato dal “Luxardo” rimane il russo Victor Sidiak, vincitore di cinque edizioni (1969/71/72/74/77), seguito a quota quattro dall’italiano Michele Maffei (1973/76/79/80) e dall’ungherese Imre Gedoevari (1978/82/83/84).

Dal 2002, dopo l’assegnazione del VI trofeo al russo Stanislav Pozdniakov, viene messo in palio, allo sciabolatore che vincerà per tre volte anche non consecutive la gara, il VII° trofeo, pregevole opera artistica del gioielliere scultore Massimo Antonelli.

Nel 2007 è stato festeggiato il 50º anniversario del Trofeo Luxardo con una serata di gala al Palazzo della Ragione, alla presenza di vecchie e nuove “glorie” della sciabola mondiale. Per l’occasione è stato pubblicato un volume commemorativo a cura di Gastone Gal e Maria Luigia Randi, che abbina ricordi flash di grandi schermitori agli eventi storici europei degli stessi anni.

Gare di Sciabola a squadreREGOLAMENTO/THE RULESLa gara è aperta agli atleti italiani e stranieri secondo il regolamento F.I.E. valido per le prove di coppa del mondo. La manifestazione è dotata del Trofeo Luxardo che verrà assegnato allo schermidore che avrà vinto la gara per tre anni anche non consecutivi. Il Trofeo rimarrà presso il comitato organizzativo che curerà l’iscrizione sul piedistallo del nome del vincitore. Il trofeo Porsche andrà invece alla nazionale che vincerà la gara a squadre.

The competition is open to Italian and foreign athletes, according to the F.I.E. rules applicable to World Cup events. The event features the Luxardo Trophy to be awarded to the fencer winning the competition for 3 years, including non-consecutive wins. In the meantime, the trophy will remain with the organising committee, which will arrange for the winner’s name to be carved on the pedestal. The Porsche Trophy will in turn be awarded to best national team.
