MODULSYSTEM CONQUERS GERMANY
Starting in the coming autumn, Modulsystem,
the modular range created by Metra to meet
the requirements of European standards in
terms of safety, will also be distributed in
Germany.
This opportunity arose from the commercial
agreement that Metra has initialled with
Thyssen Krupp, the German steel giant,
which will thus become the sole and exclusive
distributor of the range in Germany.
Thyssen Krupp is one of the most signifi cant
industrial realities in the fi eld of steel.
The Group is the market leader thanks to
its constant attention for research and
development with reference to new technology
and its great sensitivity for the environment
and the relevant ecological problems, and its
aim is to optimise the properties of the metal
so as to create more and more applications
for use in all sorts of different fi elds, from the
automotive industry to equipment handling
and so on.
This agreement, therefore, concerns an
operation that has a high strategic content for
Metra, which has always made the search for
new markets a cornerstone of its development
in order to strengthen its presence in Europe
by entering into trade agreements and creating
distribution centres or industrial facilities.
Thanks to Metra’s strategic alliance with
ThyssenKrupp, Modulsystem is yet another
step towards consolidation of the company’s
position on the international market and on
the German market in particular. A preview of
the most recent 45 Range will be presented at
the Essen Fair.
Modulsystem conquista la Germania
Modulsystem conquista la Germania
Da questo autunno Modulsystem,
la Serie modulare di casa Metra
nata per rispondere alle norma-
tive europee in termini di sicu-
rezza, verrà distribuita anche in
Germania.
Questa opportunità, frutto di un
preciso orientamento strategico
che mira a una distribuzione
internazionale della Serie, è nata
dall’accordo commerciale che Me-
tra ha siglato con ThyssenKrupp,
il colosso tedesco dell’acciaio, che
diventerà così distributore unico
ed esclusivo della Serie per la Ger-
mania.
Nata sul fi nire del secolo, Thyssen
Krupp è oggi tra le realtà indu-
striali più signifi cative del settore
dell’acciaio. Leader di mercato
grazie a una costante propensione
alla ricerca e allo sviluppo di nuove
tecnologie e a un’acuta sensibilità
per l’ambiente e le problematiche
ecologiche ad esso collegate, il
Gruppo mira all’ottimizzazione
della proprietà del metallo per
creare un sempre maggior nume-
ro di applicazioni utilizzabili nei
settori più diversi: dall’automotive
ai macchinari per la movimenta-
zione di cose e persone (come per
esempio ascensori, montacarichi,
scale mobili..).
industriali.
Grazie all’alleanza commerciale
con ThyssenKrupp, Modulsystem,
la cui neonata Serie 45 sarà pre-
sentata in anteprima durante la
Fiera di Essen, rappresenta un
ulteriore passo per il consolida-
mento della posizione di Metra sul
mercato internazionale e tedesco
in particolare.
Prima parte.
THE COOLING SYSTEM ON THE
EXTRUSION LINE
(Part 1)
The growing demand for extruded sections has
led Metra to introduce a new very powerful
press as well as all the systems associated
with it, including the cooling system.
As a matter of fact, a new concept of cooling,
associated with the type of alloy used and with
a production process every detail of which was
carefully studied, has enabled Metra to offer
its customers products intended for use in
the transport and other sectors. The products
feature excellent mechanical properties, even
when the geometry is complex.
Within the production fl ow of extruded
products, the cooling system is situated
directly after the output from the extrusion
press (Fig. 1). It is at this stage that the
aluminium alloy, after undergoing the
necessary thermomechanical processing due
to pre-heating in a furnace, solubilisation
and shaping in contact with the die, needs to
undergo a sharp drop in temperature in order
to meet the structural and/or geometrical
requirements of the semi.-fi nished product to
be made.
It is therefore extremely important to carry
out more or less drastic tempering of the
semi-fi nished product at a high temperature.
The actual cooling also plays a leading role
in the fi nal shape of the extruded bars, which
is strongly correlated to the geometrical
tolerance range.
Table 1 indicates the various different heat
treatments that are involved in the production
of extruded items. The products obtained by
extrusion in the 6,050-tonne press and cooled
in the new system can be used in several
sectors, including those considered critical in
that high quality and mechanical standards
must be reached. Specifi cally, it is possible to
make sections for the rail transport industry
(Fig. 2) reaching sizes of up to a maximum of
600 mm x 80 mm with fairly limited geometrical
tolerances. Exploiting the possibility of
carrying out differentiated tempering
depending on the thickness of each section,
bars meeting low shape tolerance requirements
and decidedly high straightness values even for
extrusion lengths exceeding 20 metres can be
obtained. This is because differentiated cooling
eliminates the onset of residual strain that is
responsible for considerable deviations from
straightness. The same qualities and features
can also be found in other extruded products
made with the 6,050-tonne press and intended
for the automotive sector. The potential of this
new system is also exploited for the production
of bars and fl at products (Fig. 3) of various
sizes for subsequent processing by removal
of material. Again for this type of product,
in spite of the large thicknesses involved it
is possible to obtain the desired mechanical
properties by adjusting the intensity of the
cooling.
The fact of being able to carry out such a
refi ned tempering has enabled medium to high-
strength alloys, such as EN AW 6005A, EN AW
6061 and EN AW 6082, to be used.
Without a suitable cooling process it would be
impossible to obtain the peculiar properties
of these alloys that are of fundamental
importance for the applications in which
the fi nal artefact originating as an extruded
product is used.
estrusi ha portato Metra all’in-
troduzione di una nuova pressa
di notevole potenza e di tutti gli
impianti ad essa strettamente
connessi, tra cui quello di raffred-
damento. Una nuova concezione
di raffreddamento infatti, asso-
ciata al tipo di lega utilizzata e
ad un processo produttivo curato
nei dettagli, permette a Metra di
offrire al cliente prodotti desti-
nati agli impieghi nel settore dei
trasporti e non solo, caratterizzati
da proprietà meccaniche eccellenti
anche in abbinamento a geometrie
complesse.
All’interno del fl usso produttivo
degli estrusi, l’impianto di raffred-
damento si colloca direttamente al-
l’uscita della pressa di estrusione
(fi g.1). A questo stadio, infatti, la
lega d’alluminio, dopo aver subito
le necessarie trasformazioni ter-
momeccaniche dovute al preriscal-
do in forno, alla solubilizzazione e
formatura a contatto con la matri-
ce, necessita di un forte decremen-
to della propria temperatura per
soddisfare le esigenze strutturali
e/o geometriche del semilavorato
da realizzare.
Risulta pertanto di primaria im-
portanza, affi nché siano ottenibili
determinate caratteristiche mecca-
niche di resistenza, effettuare sul
semilavorato ad alta temperatura
una tempra più o meno drastica. Il
raffreddamento stesso, inoltre, gio-
ca un ruolo primario anche sulla
forma fi nale delle barre estruse,
fortemente correlata al campo delle
tolleranze geometriche.
Nella tabella 1 sono richiamati i vari
trattamenti termici che interessano
la produzione degli estrusi.
I prodotti ottenuti tramite estru-
sione alla pressa da 6.050 t e raf-
freddati nel nuovo impianto pos-
sono essere impiegati in diversi
settori, anche in quelli considerati
critici per la possibilità di rag-
giungere elevati standard quali-
tativi e meccanici. In particolare
si riescono a realizzare profi lati
destinati al trasporto ferroviario
(fi g.2), le cui dimensioni massi-
me di sezione possono raggiunge-
re i 600mm×80mm con tolleranze
geometriche alquanto ristrette.
Sfruttando le potenzialità dell’im-
pianto di raffreddamento, ed in
particolare la possibilità di effet-
tuare una tempra differenziata a
seconda degli spessori del profi lo,
si ottengono barre caratterizzate
da ristrette tolleranze di forma e
da una rettilineità decisamente
elevata anche con lunghezza di
estrusione superiore ai venti me-
tri. Il raffreddamento differenziato
infatti, tramite un’asportazione
omogenea del calore dal profi lato,
elimina l’instaurarsi di sforzi re-
sidui responsabili di un notevole
scostamento dalla rettilineità. Le
stesse qualità e caratteristiche sono
riscontrabili anche in altri estru-
si prodotti alla pressa da 6.050 t e
destinati al settore automotive. Le
potenzialità del nuovo impianto,
inoltre, vengono sfruttate anche
nella produzione di barre e piatti
(fi g.3) di diverse dimensioni desti-
nati a successive lavorazioni per
asportazione di truciolo. Anche per
questo tipo di prodotti nonostante
gli elevati spessori, giocando sul-
l’intensità del raffreddamento è
possibile ottenere le caratteristiche
meccaniche desiderate.
Il fatto di poter operare una tempra
così affi nata ha permesso l’impiego
di leghe con resistenze meccaniche
medio-alte, quali le EN AW 6005A,
EN AW 6061 ed EN AW 6082.
Senza un opportuno processo di
raffreddamento, infatti, sarebbe
impossibile ottenere le proprietà
peculiari di tali leghe di rilevanza
fondamentale per le applicazioni
del manufatto fi nale alla cui base
si situa l’estruso.

THE NEW FRONTIERS OF THE METRA
MODULAR SYSTEM
Modulsystem, the protection system created
by Metra to meet safety requirements at the
workplace as endorsed by European standards,
has been enriched with a new range.
Alongside the 40 Range and Modulframe, a new
update has now been placed on the market.
This is the 45 range, complete with all its
accessories and available with either 8 mm
or 10 mm channels.
FEATURES
Investing by enriching its products is the
strategic philosophy followed by Metra, with
the aim of responding in a more and more
comprehensive manner to the needs of the
whole market. That is why the 45 Range,
which has been on sale since early in 2004,
was designed precisely as a new tool within
an increasingly broad programme of offerings
taking in the whole market. This strategic
decision has not only made Metra the only
Italian extruder able to offer all of 3 typologies
of complete modular products with their own
accessories (the 40 Range, the 45 Range and
Modulframe). It is also the only manufacturer
to design and produce its ranges in house.
This peculiarity also leads to advantages in
terms of the way in which customer relations
are managed. A direct relationship with the
manufacturer (unlike contacts with fi rms
dealing in a single range) means that there
is plenty of leeway to create customised
solutions. This applies both to the creation
of new sections and to that of accessories
designed specifi cally from scratch.
COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN RANGES
The fact that Metra’s different modular ranges
are compatible with one another enables
the materials to be optimised. This in turn
contributes towards creating a fi nished
product that is increasingly made to measure
and available to customers.
THE MARKET
Metra can boast an interesting wealth of skills
that have enabled it to gain a fi rm foothold
not only on the Italian domestic market but
also on the international market. Its presence
is backed by a great commercial strength
based on a widespread distribution network
throughout Italy, with distribution centres and
sales agents practically everywhere.
So, great fl exibility (with consequent greater
control over quality), a widespread presence
and an economically competitive offering
make the use of Modulsystem more and more
appealing.
La Serie 45 infatti, in commercio
da inizio 2004, è stata concepita
proprio come un nuovo strumento
in un programma di offerta sem-
pre più nutrito che abbracci tutto
il mercato. Una scelta strategica
quindi che non solo fa di Metra
l’unico estrusore italiano in grado
di offrire ben 3 tipologie di prodot-
ti modulari completi e con acces-
sori (Serie 40, Serie 45, Modulfra-
me), ma anche l’unico produttore
che progetta e realizza in casa le
sue Serie. Peculiarità questa che
implica dei vantaggi anche nella
modalità di gestione del rapporto
con il cliente: il rapporto diretto
con il produttore infatti (diversa-
mente rispetto al gammista) lascia
ampio spazio alla creazione di so-
luzioni personalizzate sia nella
realizzazione di nuovi profi li che
nella realizzazione di accessori
progettati interamente ad hoc.
Compatibilità tra Serie
La compatibilità tra le diverse Se-
rie modulari Metra rende possibile
l’ottimizzazione dei materiali (si
possono infatti affi ancare e assem-
blare profi li più costosi a soluzio-
ni più economiche), contribuendo
così a creare un prodotto fi nito
sempre più su misura e sempre
più a disposizione del cliente.
Il mercato
Metra, sul mercato già da quattro
anni con il sistema modulare Mo-
dulsystem, può vantare così un in-
teressante bagaglio di competenze
che le hanno valso la presenza non
solo sul mercato italiano interno,
ma anche su quello internazionale.
Presenza supportata da una gran-
de forza commerciale fondata su
una rete distributiva capillare in
tutta Italia, con centri di distribu-
zione e agenti commerciali in tutto
il territorio.
La grande fl essibilità dunque (con
il conseguente maggior controllo
sulla qualità), una presenza capil-
lare e un’offerta economica compe-
titiva, rendono l’utilizzo di Modul-
system sempre più appetibile.

MOBILE PARTITIONS FOR REDESIGNING
SPACES
The fl exibility of aluminium makes this
alloy increasingly widespread and its use
is appropriate in all sorts of applications,
including experiments with some very different
combinations of metals.
One example of this is the activity carried
on by Oddicini, a wood-working industry
fi rst established in 1898 for the production
of wooden artefacts by means of industrial
processing systems. Among its leading
products we should point out the production
of controllable mobile partitions. These are
the ideal solutions for splitting up large spaces
into other smaller ones, ensuring perfect
soundproofi ng.
These partitions are made up of independent
elements that slide on a guide made of
extruded aluminium secured to the ceiling,
with no need for guides at fl oor level. Smooth
sliding is ensured by two or more trolleys
containing high-resistance ball bearings.
A high level of modularity and rapidity of
mounting are the aspects that make these
partitions the ideal solution for any project
requirement. What is more, modern design
and the use of combinations of materials give
the product aesthetic qualities and practical
reliability. Thanks to the perfect stability
of the partitions and their consequent
soundproofi ng qualities, they can be
considered proper “walls”, with the additional
advantage that it is easy to step in at any time
to alter the available space, depending on
requirements.
RAIL TRANSPORT
HIGH PERFORMANCE FOR HIGH SPEED
High performance, safety and comfort are the
essential requisites needed nowadays on the
rail transport market, and precisely these
elements are the main objectives underlying
the design and production of Talgo trains.
On the market since over 50 years ago, this
Spanish fi rm has always worked to improve
the way in which property and people are
transported. Talgo’s current activities are
focused on the production and design of
trains. In this activity a material as ductile as
aluminium has been able to perform at its best.
The structure of the carriages is made of light-
alloy sections, that make the train light so that
its speed can be increased without increasing
its power consumption. In turn, energy
saving means economic and also ecological
advantages. The model presented on this page
features a markedly aerodynamic design. It is
used on the stretch of railway between Madrid
and Barcelona and was designed specifi cally to
take up (and win) the challenge of high-speed
exploiting state-of-the-art technology. Indeed,
the train reaches a speed of 350 km/hr.
Prestazioni elevate, sicurezza e
comfort sono i requisiti fondamen-
tali che il mercato dei trasporti su
rotaia richiede oggi, e proprio
questi elementi sono gli obiettivi
principali a cui si ispira la proget-
tazione e la produzione dei treni
fi rmati Talgo.
Sul mercato da oltre 50 anni,
l’azienda spagnola ha sempre
operato con un vivo spirito volto
alla costante evoluzione dei suoi
prodotti, per migliorare sempre
di più il modo di trasportare cose
e persone.
accumulato in vantaggi economici
e anche ecologici (minor consumo
equivale a minor inqui-
namento). Il modello
presentato in questa
pagina, dallo
spiccato
design aerodinamico utilizzato
infatti i 350 km/h.
