Il bello di New York è che potresti startene tranquillamente fermo in un angolo a guardare, e già questo è uno spettacolo notevole. Gente che cammina velocemente, con l’immancabile beverone in mano, un fiume di persone, ovunque tu vada. Ricordo ancora l’emozione che ho provato passeggiando sulla Fifth davanti all’elegante vetrina di Tiffany&Co. Era come essere dentro il film “Colazione da Tiffany” interpretato dal mio mito: Audrey Hepburn._____

The great thing about New York is that you can stand still at a street corner and just watch the world go by - in itself a fantastic scene. People walking quickly, looking busy and always with a large cup of something in their hand. A rushing tide of people, flowing in every direction.I still remember the excitement of walking down Fifth Avenue past the elegant façade of Tiffany’s. I felt as if I were a character in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, starring my true heroine, Audrey Hepburn.

Quando decisi di partire per Nashville sapevo che la città era la ‘capitale mondiale della musica country’ ma non immaginavo che, qui, tutte le strade portano i nomi di leggende del country come Roy Acuff e Chet Atkins. Il mio pellegrinaggio a Nashville ha previsto due tappe fondamentali: la Country Music Hall of Fame e il Ryman Auditorium. Quest’ultimo, noto come Mother Church of Country Music, è ancora un palcoscenico d’eccezione per le esibizioni dal vivo: è qui che hanno suonato Bob Dylan, le Indigo Girls, B.B. King, le Dixie Chicks..._____

When I decided to go to Nashville, I already knew that the city was the ‘country music capital of the world’, but I never imagined that all the roads in the city were actually named after country legends such as Roy Acuff and Chet Atkins. My pilgrimage to Nashville centred on two historical venues: the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Ryman Auditorium. Better known as the Mother Church of Country Music, the Ryman Auditorium is to this day an extraordinary venue for live performances. Among the countless other artists who have performed on the Ryman stage are Bob Dylan, the Indigo Girls, B.B. King and the Dixie Chicks.

Ha inoltre sede a Nashville una delle più grandi aziende produttrici di chitarre e bassi elettrici, la Gibson. È stata anche definita l’Atene del sud-est degli Stati Uniti per i suoi numerosi istituti scolastici e per l’architettura classica dei molti dei suoi edifici._____

Nashville is nicknamed ‘Music City’ because it is here that the unique ‘Grand Ole Opry’ continues to stage its live country music radio broadcasts, and also the home of the Country Music Hall of fame as well as a host of major recording companies. Another world-famous name can be found in Nashville: Gibson, one of the most famous manufacturers of electric guitars and bass guitars. With its numerous academic institutes and for the classic architecture of many of the city’s buildings, Nashville is also referred to as the Athens of the south-east.

Mi ritrovai di fronte ad una città vitale, incastonata tra panorami montani mozzafiato dove il sole splende per 300 giorni all’anno. L’impressione fu bellissima. La città di Denver fu fondata nel 1858 dai cercatori d’oro. E infatti, quando mi avventurai per le sue strade scoprii come molto della ricca eredità Western sia rimasta negli edifici e nei musei. Soprannominata “Mile High City” ovvero “Città alta un miglio”, la capitale del Colorado appare come un miraggio ai confini occidentali delle grandi pianure americane. _____

I found myself in a vibrant city nestling among breathtaking mountain scenery, where the sun shines for 300 days every year. My first impression was extraordinary. The city of Denver was founded in 1858 by gold prospectors, and the rich culture of the old west can still be seen in the ornate buildings and museums that abound in the city. The “Mile High City” - capital of Colorado - is like a mirage at the borders of the great western plains of America.

BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND MODERN

My American dream: an unforgettable ‘on the road’ trip through the United States. With just a map showing my route and a ‘must-see’ and ‘must-do’ list, mile after mile, I noted my impressions as I followed the route of the great Kerouac. I wanted to cement in my mind the classic and modern beauty that is to be found in the USA.

New York: vibrant and exciting. San Francisco: the unique atmosphere of a succession of alternative movements, from the Beat Generation, through the Flower People and to the era of student protests. Chicago I will always remember for the sound of the wind and great blues played on the streets. The fascination of Nashville is perhaps more traditional, but its sound is unmistakeable. Austin is an immense capital right in the heart of Texas, and Denver is simply breathtaking - a prospector’s heaven nestling among the mountains.

TRA CLASSICO E MODERNO

My american dream: indimenticabile viaggio on the road negli Stati Uniti. Con in mano solo una cartina geografica del percorso ed una lista di cose che volevo assolutamente vedere, miglio dopo miglio ho appuntato i miei pensieri sulla scia del “grande” Kerouac. Volevo fissare per sempre la bellezza, tra il classico e il moderno, degli Usa.

New York: c’è qualcosa che la fa vibrare... San Francisco: atmosfera chic da patria dei movimenti alternativi (la Beat Generation, i figli dei fiori, le proteste studentesche). Chicago, per me, è rumore del vento e blues suonato per strada. Nashville ha un fascino più tradizionale ma con un sound inconfondibile. Austin è l’immensa capitale texana e Denver, toglie il fiato, incastonata tra le montagne, fu terra promessa per i cercatori d’oro.

Quando la nebbia copre il Golden Gate al tramonto, la bellezza di San Francisco è incomparabile. Resa famosa da numerosi film e telefilm, Frisco è davvero una città affascinante. Lo si percepisce da lontano, lo si capisce quando ci si arriva per la prima volta. Il Golden Gate, il ponte di ferro rosso che la unisce alla Baia, colpisce per la sua maestosità. Vederlo spuntare dalla nebbia è uno spettacolo che rimane impresso negli occhi. Costruita su una penisola formata da 43 colline, le sue strade sono tutte dei saliscendi. _____

When the Golden Gate bridge is veiled in fog at sundown, the beauty of San Francisco is unique. Famous as a backdrop for numerous films and television series, Frisco is truly fascinating. You can see it from a distance, even before reaching the city for the first time. The Golden Gate - the huge bridge in red steel linking the city to the Bay - is awe-inspiringly majestic. To see it peeking through the fog is an unforgettable sight indeed. The city is built on a peninsula comprising 43 hills, so all the roads are steep.

Tra i vari simboli che rappresentano la città di San Francisco vi è il Golden Gate Bridge, un ponte sospeso che sovrasta il Golden Gate, lo stretto che unisce la baia di San Francisco con l’Oceano Pacifico. ll ponte nasce dall’ingegno e dalla non comune capacità dell’ingegnere statunitense Joseph Baermann Strauss. Quando fu ultimato nel 1937, era il più grande ponte a sospensione del mondo. _____

One of the symbols that distinguish the city of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, the huge suspension bridge which passes over the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. The bridge was the brainchild of an extraordinarily talented American engineer, Joseph Baermann Strauss. On its completion in 1937, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world.

Atterrai a Chicago una sera d’estate. Il chiarore del sole che stava tramontando illuminava la città. Una distesa infinita di luci che si accendevano. Chicago è la città del vento. Improponibile in inverno, quando le temperature sono davvero rigide. Le strade, le piazze e i parchi di Chicago che si affacciano sul lago Michigan sono una grande galleria d’arte contemporanea a cielo aperto: opere disegnate da Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano e altre grandi firme. _____

I landed in Chicago one night in summer. The setting sun lit the city, as an infinite swathe of lights began to sparkle.Chicago is the windy city, with winter temperatures that are incredibly low. The city’s streets, squares and parks overlooking Lake Michigan are a huge open-air gallery of modern art where you can admire works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano and many other greats.

Cluod Gate, la grande scultura, creata dal celebre artista angloindiano Anish Kapoor nel Millennium Park, è soprannominata “il fagiolo” per la sua forma allungata. Ultimata nel 2006, riflette lo skyline di Chicago sulla superficie di acciaio inossidabile. Si trova al centro della AT&T Plaza nel Millennium Park. _____

The enormous sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, is - for obvious reasons - nicknamed “The Bean”. This extraordinary work of art was completed in 2006, and Chicago’s skyline is reflected on its highly-polished stainless steel surface. “The Bean” is the centrepiece of the AT&T Plaza in the Millennium Park.

È difficile comprendere quanto grande sia il Texas senza andarci di persona. Io stessa non avrei mai immaginato che tra Texline, all’estremità settentrionale del Texas Panhandle, a Brownsville, alla foce del Rio Grande al confine col Messico, ci sono 1.509 km di highways. Anche Austin, che è la capitale del Texas, è immensa. Situata sulle rive del fiume Colorado, è il regno della musica dal vivo, dove la tecnologia all’avanguardia serve artisti, musicisti e cineasti. _____

You don’t realize just how huge Texas is until you have been there. I myself would never have imagined that Texline, the northernmost town in the Texas Panhandle, and Brownsville, at the mouth of the Rio Grande near the Mexican border, are separated by no less than 1,509 km of highways. Austin, too - the capital of Texas - is immense. Situated on the banks of the Colorado river, Austin is the capital of live music, and offers avant-garde technology to its numerous artists, musicians and film-makers.
