SAFE FAMILIES Thank you for your continued prayers and support of the Safe Families ministry! The network of disciples of both host families and 'family friends', provided over 300 bed nights to children in 2019. We hope to do even more in 2020! There are many requests every day for hosting of children whose parents are facing homelessness, addiction issues, hospitalization for themselves or a sick child, domestic violence, etc. If you've considered opening your home to families in need and have any questions about how the ministry serves, we are here to share. If you are unable to host, but want to help support the hostings in the form of diapers, meals, or gift cards for groceries, etc., your support is appreciated. Please contact Jenny Hayes for needs and information at [email protected] A snapshot of the types of situations God brings us to serve. Currently hosting families are serving an eleven year old and six year old (different families) as their moms secure housing, four year old twins while mom enters a detox program, and a one year while mom deals with a health crisis. Please pray for these hostings - for the children who have been displaced, the families struggling to survive, and the families in our parish who are being Jesus through their compassion and support.

Please join us in praying the rosary daily after 8:30 a.m. Mass

Lenten Series: The Way for Real Christians: Following Jesus intentionally

Presented by Fr Reynold and Fr Walter Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts 35 Again the next day John was standing ]with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. John 1:35-39

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time License to Sin In the James Bond movies, 007 has a license to kill. He can shoot all the bad guys he wants with-out worrying about being charged with murder. God, however, does not issue a license to sin. The first reading from Sirach reminds us that any time we choose between life and death, good and evil, it is our free choice and our responsibility. God may allow us to make bad choices, but God never commands anyone to sin. Jesus goes even deeper than Sirach. The people of Sirach's time had followed the laws and com-mandments that governed external actions. As long as they treated others fairly, did not kill any-one or steal from them, they could think whatever they wanted. But Jesus taught that thoughts and desires that lead to sin can also be freely chosen or rejected. In the Gospel he gives us some exam-ples. The first is about killing. Jesus says that anyone who gets angry enough to kill or who looks down on his neighbor as not deserving to live has com-mitted murder in his heart. What prejudices or grudges am I holding in my heart? The longer I hold onto hurtful feelings, the more likely it be-comes that they will lead to hurtful actions. Be-cause the Eucharist is our sacrament of unity, we should take care to be reconciled with others be-fore coming to the altar. The next warning is about adultery, which also begins with interior feelings. Jesus exaggerates when he tells us to cut off a hand or tear out an eye, because he knew how easily we rationalize our feelings and pretend they are harmless. This leads to the next warning about divorce. Jesus takes marriage seriously and expects his disciples to do the same. His final example concerns taking oaths. Appar-ently, people would swear upon almost anything in an effort to be believed. Jesus gets to the point and says that we wouldn't need oaths if we al-ways told the truth and kept our promises. Our faith is based on the knowledge that God keeps promises. Shouldn't we do the same? Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
