Landscape is a process. As a consequence, management is the most appropriate approach for defining  landscape policies: a concept still vague where planning activities, governance systems, economic factors and social attitudes may play a significant role. The Seminar will deal with landscape management, analyzing case studies in Italy and Japan. Two countries geographically far apart, but with similar problems: decreasing and ageing population, valuable traditional rural landscapes, urban sprawl, concern for conservation policies. The “Green Crown” of Turin’s metropolitan area, a regional program on interventions carried out since fifteen years now on, is the first case study, which will be explored  through field trips and meetings with stakeholders and “ landscape managers”.  The sustainability of preserving traditional landscapes in Japan, facing the cost of labour and the societal changes, is the aim of a research activity carried on by the Nagoya University, School of Environmental Studies.  Prof. Hiroyuki Shimizu will illustrate his own approach to the evaluation of landscape “labor forces”, as a basis for setting sustainable management perspectives.
