• SOLAS VGM Requirement effective 1 July 2016

• “Method 2” allows shippers to add the cargo and securing material weight to the tare weight of the container for declaration.

BIC Technical Characteristics Database

•The BIC launched a pilot Technical Characteristics Database (TCD)

•The TCD will allow owners/operators to upload fleet technical details, including tare weight.

•Shippers and other parties will be able to access tare weights on a single, central location.

•Web access and automated API to allow integration of tare weights into systems.

TCD benefits for the entire supply chain

Container owners and operators•Easily upload complete fleet file to a single database•Eliminates need to update own website, or deal with integrated data requests from shippers•Reduce e-mails and phone calls

For shippers, 3PL’s and other intermediaries in the supply chain•A one stop location to obtain technical characteristics of all containers•No manual checking of tare on door of container, or on multiple websites•Automate tare weight data through API integration. Or access a single website.

Benefits beyond SOLAS VGM:•When complete technical details included, benefits to industry extend well beyond VGM requirement: Terminals, rail, hauliers, customs, anti-fraud, banks, insurance…

What’s next?

•BIC has invited owners/operators to upload fleet files

•Files to be loaded in order received

•Pilot to run through end of 2016

•TCD will be refined and expanded based on industry input

•Database to be run as non-profit, non-commercial service to the industry.
