Neil Orchard Senior News April 2018
Jenny Ta ~ Editor
“Hoppin’ to It” By Heather Schelske
Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor
What a fun way to start the month. This year, April 1st not only marked April Fool’s Day, it
was also Easter Sunday. Hopefully not too many of us fell victim to Easter pranks. I saw a
great one where someone replaced the mini foil wrapped chocolate eggs with grapes
instead. Thankfully there were no pranks pulled during Cordova Recreation and Park
District’s 51st annual Hoppin’ & Huntin’ at Hagan. A big shout out to our Senior Advisory
Board for manning a booth and representing the senior center. They brought smiles to
countless children’s faces with the many balloons they blew up and passed out. With
almost 2,000 people in attendance, that was A LOT of happy kids. Go to our Facebook page for a sneak
peek at some of the photos from the event, there might even be a cute chicken you’ll recognize. April is
also National Volunteer Month. This month is dedicated to recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend
their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community. On April 25th, we are
hosting our annual Volunteer Celebration Luncheon to honor the many volunteers who have dedicated
themselves to making the senior center a better place. It would truly be a CIRCUS around here without
them. If you received an invitation in the mail, please make sure to RSVP at the front desk by April 13.
Guests and senior center participants are encouraged to purchase tickets to the event to show their
support to the 50+ volunteers being celebrated. Thank you to Summerset Senior Living for sponsoring
this great event and the Your Musical Memories Band for providing live entertainment.
We didn’t find the pot of gold, but we had one heck of a time at the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration last
month. The Your Musical Memories Band played to a sold-out crowd of over 100 attendees and everyone
enjoyed the traditional corned beef and cabbage meal. If you missed out on the event, check out the
video posted on our Facebook page. You might even catch a glimpse of me dancing in the conga line!
There’s no more denying it, Spring is officially here. That means it’s time for Spring cleaning! Clear out those closets and garages and join us for our Community Yard Sale on Saturday, May 5. You can either get your own vendor spot to sell your gently used items or donate them to the Cordova Senior Advisory
Board. Donations can be brought in and dropped off beginning, May 1. See inside for more information or pick up a packet from the front desk.

Gardening News
By Claudia Alstrom
The Green Thumb Garden Club is
always looking for help in planting
and maintaining the vegetable
garden, as well as the flower
gardens inside and out. Please
join us on the first Wednesday of
each month at 10:30am.
Our Green Thumb Garden Club members are Ann
Thomason, Bill Wells, Gretchen Simmons, Judy,
Judy Kho, Kurt Linn, Linda Gates, Liz Otero,
Marilyn Hamm, Marjorie, Rell Schwanke, Roxie
Jones, Shirley Gladfelder, Lois Leal, Reta Douglas
and Claudia Alstrom.
A list of things for gardeners to remember to
do in the real world
• Wash
• Speak to “normal” people about things other
than gardening or compost
• Check you are not still wearing your garden
boots or gloves when entering a restaurant
• Do not talk to your friends’ plants. They (the
plants) will not understand and they (your
friends) will be quite worried about your mental
state
• Wash
~A little garden humor from unknown source

monthly birthday celebration!
