L' ispessitore per fanghi a comando centrale viene installato su medi e grandi impianti di depurazione, nei casi in cui è necessario ottenere una sostanziale riduzione del tenore in acqua del fango, sia esso di natura organica che inorganica. L’ispessitore è costitui to da un gruppo di rotazione a comando centrale comprendente motore elettrico, gruppo di riduzione a più stadi, cilindro deflettore, albero e sistema ra- schiante costituito, nella parte inferiore, da una coppia di bracci portalame e, in quella superiore, da una serie di picchetti d’ispessimento. Il gruppo di riduzione a più stadi è di tipo epicicloidale. L’albero è sospeso in asse al gruppo. L’ingresso dei fanghi è centrale, ma il flusso viene deviato dal deflettore al fine di ottimizzare l’ispessimento. Le lame raschia fanghi, realizzate in normale profilo, pr ovvedono ad a- sportare i fanghi accumulati sul fondo e a raccoglierli in una fossa centrale, da dove, mediante tubazione, vengono avviati allo scarico. Le lame e i picchetti sono registrabili. La passerella può essere realizzata in calcestruzzo o in carpenteria metallica. La protezione contro i sovraccarichi avviene grazie ad un limitatore di coppia dinamometrico tarabile, completo di un dispositivo di segna- lazione di allarme.
