Come è possibile che la guerra sia an-cora una prospettiva presente nella vita dell’umanità? Come è possibile che, ancora, la voce delle armi, delle esplosioni, sembri trionfare nell’esi-stenza delle nostre società?La violenza sembra trionfare. Ma, in realtà, è l’ impegno per la pace che manca, che è stato messo in sof f itta perché, almeno in Europa, e dopo il secondo conf litto mon-diale, ci siamo convinti che la pace è un valore acquisito, def initiva-mente conquistato.

Escludendo dal nostro sguardo, dalle nostre preoccupazioni la pace come impegno quotidiano abbia-mo escluso dai nostri orizzonti una parte del mondo che soffre e che mai ha conosciuto quella pace.Ed oggi ci rendiamo conto che non abbiamo def initivamente estirpato la violenza dalla nostra mente, dai nostri cuori. Ci siamo forse il lusi che senza bombe e senza bombar-damenti in Europa fossimo diven-tati immuni alla violenza.Mentre il mercato, il capitalismo che garantisce il nostro stile di vita consumava ogni nostra energia dandoci l’ i l lusione che tutto fosse per sempre.Ed è questa forma di egoismo economico, f inanz iar io, che na-sce nel la gest ione del quot id iano di ognuno di noi, che consuma i l

Wie ist es möglich, dass Krieg noch eine Perspektive im Leben der Menschen ist? Wie ist es möglich, dass die Sprache der Waffen und der Explosionen immer noch über die Existenz unserer Gesellschaft zu triumphieren scheint?Es sieht aus, als wäre die Gewalt übermächtig. Aber in Wahrheit ist es der Einsatz für den Frieden der fehlt. Er ist nebensächlich geworden, zumindest in Europa, sind wir nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg immer mehr zur Überzeugung gekommen, dass der Frieden ein erwor-bener, endgültig errungener Wert ist.

Indem wir den Frieden als tägliche Auf-gabe aus unserem Blickfeld und unse-ren Sorgen ausblenden, verschließen wir die Augen vor dem Teil der Welt, der leidet und der diesen Frieden nie kennengelernt hat. Und heute begreifen wir, dass wir die Gewalt in unseren Köpfen und Herzen noch nicht besiegt haben. Vielleicht sind wir der Illusion erlegen, dass wir in Europa ohne Bomben und Luftangriffe gegen Gewalt gefeit sind.Unterdessen hat der kapitalistische Markt, der unseren Lebensstil garantierte und uns glauben ließ, alles würde immer so bleiben, alle unsere Energie und Res-sourcen verbraucht.Genau das ist die Form des wirtschaf-tlichen, finanziellen Egoismus, der im alltäglichen Handeln von uns allen be-ginnt und den Planeten und seine Res-sourcen verbraucht. Um das Engagement derjenigen mitzutragen, die, wie der Servizio Cristiano handeln, damit das Leben der Schwächsten unter uns nicht zur Brutstätte von Gewalt wird, sondern eine Herausforderung der Möglichkeiten für eine neue oder zu-mindest bessere Welt?

How is it possible that war is still a perspective for humankind? How is it possible that the voices of arms and explosions still triumph over the existence of our society? Vio-lence appears to be triumphant. But in fact there is a lack of advocacy for peace, that was put aside, be-cause we, at least in Europe and after the Second World War, have convinced oursel-ves that peace is an achieved, an ulti-mately conquered value. By exclu-ding peace from our sorrows and field of vision as a daily duty, we also exclu-ded a part of the world that is suf-fering and has ne-ver got to know this peace. And today we realize that we haven’t exterminated the violence in our hearts and minds. Maybe we succumbed to the illusion that we have become immune to violence, without having bombs and bom-bardments in Europe. Whilst the free market, the capitalist system which guarantees our standard of living and give us the illusion that everything will stay the same, has consumed all of our energy. And

Pour parta-ger l’engagement de ceux qui, comme le Servizio Cristiano, agissent afin que l’exi-stence des plus démunis ne devienne pas un terrain fertile pour la violence, mais la promesse d’un monde nouveau, ou du moins renouvelé.

Mi chiamo Albrecht Birx, abito a Ko-blenz al Rheno (in Germania), ho 56 anni e a primavera ho passato 6 set-timane a Riesi.Tutto cominciava con il fatto, che nel mio lavoro da referente per i gio-vani nel circolo della chiesa evange-lica di Koblenz facevo troppi straor-dinari. Per me è stato l’occasione di fermarmi per un attimo e guardare le mie energie e motivazioni rimasti. Se fai per tanti anni un lavoro versa-tile e in una posizione responsabile devi sostenere anche delle strutture, si consuma tanta energia (che non puoi recuperare nemmeno quando vai in vacanza). Per questo ho pre-so la decisione: “Per la prima volta dopo 22 anni di lavoro nel circolo della chiesa metterò tutti i straordi-nari e giorni di ferie rimasti insieme e mi prenderò un tempo libero per antera in un sabbatico”.Quando cominciavo di pensare su dove potrei passare questo tempo si è sviluppata l’idea che vorrei passar-la in un paese interessante con una cultura complessa e di impegnarmi in un progetto lì.Dei valdesi del nord italia avevo già letto, sentito e visto tanto, quindi ho contattato questo progetto diaco-nale in Sicilia, il Servizio Cristiano. Non sono stato un volontario gio-vane tipico, per questo ci volevano più e-mail con la direzione del Ser-vizio Cristiano fin a quando potevo

Mein Name ist Albrecht Birx, ich habe meinen Lebensort in Koblenz am Rhein (Deutschland), bin 56 Jahre alt und habe in diesem Frühjahr 6 Wochen in Riesi verbracht.Angefangen hat alles damit, dass sich in meiner Tätigkeit als Jugendreferent im Ev. Kirchenkreis Koblenz regelmäßig Überstunden und Alturlaube ansammel-ten. Dies war der Anlass für mich einmal inne zu halten und meine Energie- und Motivationsspeicher anzuschauen. Wenn man über viele Jahre beruflich eine fa-cettenreiche Arbeit absolviert und in einer Leitungsfunktion auch Strukturen zu stützen hat gehen nun mal Energien zur Neige (die auch durch regelmäßige Urlaube nicht aufzufüllen sind). Also lag der Entschluss nahe: Ich werde erstmals nach 22 Jahren Referatsarbeit im Kir-chenkreis angestaute Alturlaube-Über-stunden-Neuurlaub-Sonderurlaub in ein „Paket packen“ und für 9 Wochen in eine berufliche Auszeit - in ein SABATTICAL gehen.Bei meinen ersten Überlegungen entwi-ckelte sich die Idee diese Zeit in einem in-teressanten Land mit vielschichtiger Kul-tur zu verbringen und mich gleichzeitig dort in einem Projekt zu engagieren. So ergab es sich, da ich von den Waldensern in Norditalien schon einiges gehört, gele-sen und gesehen hatte, dass ich zu die-sem speziellen Sozial-Diakonie-Projekt in Sizilien Kontakt aufnahm. Da ich ja kein typischer „junger Freiwilliger“ war, hat es einige Emails mit der Leitung des Servi-

8cominciare il mio lavoro lì. Nor-malmente nel mio lavoro devo usa-re tanto la testa, adesso, in questa pausa, volevo centrarmi di più su i lavori fisici e artigianali. Sono stato fortunato che nell’ufficio del Servi-zio Cristiano lavorava una segretaria che sapeva parlare tedesco e che mi ha aiutato molto con la comunica-zione e i chiarimenti che erano ne-cessari. Grazie!Quindi, dopo il mio arrivo al 9 feb-braio lavoravo insieme al manuten-tore Giuseppe Bastile e al volontario Simon (Austriaco). Facevamo ripa-razioni, lavori al officina, piccoli la-vori edili e a volte abbiamo riparato anche cose ai canali e giardino.Le esperienze preziose che ho fatto sono:

1. vivere per 7 settimane sen-za notizie, radio e televisione e invece addentrarsi con se stesso, leggere la letteratura sulla Sicilia che hai portato e scrivere a volte sul mio diario. (Sarebbe stato possibile usare la televisione che c’era nel mio appartamento, ma senza pote-vo riempire il tempo diversa-mente, senza distrazioni – per esempio andare a dormire più presto).

2. così anche i miei pensieri si calmavano, divagavano di meno e dopo il lavoro potevo concentrarmi meglio sul essen-ziale.

3. ovviamente io, che sono abi-tuato a lavorare con la testa, dopo un giorno di lavoro fisico sono stato stanco, ma anche contento di aver cominciato e finito un compito artigiana-

Aufgrund meiner beruflichen Tätigkeit mit „Kopfarbeit“, sollte der Fokus in die-ser Auszeit auf mehr handwerklicher und körperlicher Arbeit liegen. Es war ein Glücksgriff, dass im Büro des Servi-zio eine Mitarbeiterin mit Deutschkennt-nissen war, die die Kommunikation und notwendigen Klärungen für mich sehr erleichtert hat. GRAZIE !Folglich war ich nach meiner Ankunft am 9. Februar dann mit dem Hausmeister Guiseppe und dem Freiwilligen Simon (aus Österreich) eingeteilt Reparatu-ren, Werkstattarbeit und kleine bauliche Maßnahmen durchzuführen und hin und wieder auch Kanal- und Gartenanlagen instand zu setzen. Meine vielen Auszeit-Erfahrungs-Schätze lagen nun hier:

1. 7 Wochen einmal ohne Nachrichten, Radio und Fernsehen auszukommen und sich stattdessen mit sich selbst zu beschäftigen, mitgenommene Reise-literatur über Sizilien zu lesen und gelegentliche Reisenotizen ins Tage-buch zu übernehmen. (Es wäre zwar im Appartement möglich gewesen den Fernseher zu nutzen, aber ohne ihn konnte ich eine gewisse Zeit ohne Ablenkung die Zeit anders ausfüllen – z.B. früher schlafen.

2. Es stellte sich dabei ein, dass meine Gedanken ruhiger wurden, nicht mehr ständig abschweiften, ich mich nach getaner Arbeit besser auf das Wesentliche fokussieren konnte.

3. Bei so viel körperlicher Arbeit blieb natürlich nicht aus, dass ich als „Kopfmensch“ nach Arbeitsende ausgepowert, aber auch innerlich zu-frieden darüber war, handwerkliche Aufgaben angepackt und zu Ende

4. si deve dire che anche la col-laborazione con Giuseppe e Simon ha arricchito il mio sog-giorno. È stato un buon lavoro di squadra con apprezzamen-to, capacità di resistenza e fi-ducia.

Anche se il clima durante il mio so-giorno a febbraio e marzo con tanta pioggia, neve e freddo non era facile per me e tutti i collaboratori a Riesi, il fine-settimana mi restava il tempo per conoscere la Sicilia (per esempio ho visitato Palermo, Agrigento, Cata-nia, Siracusa, Taormina e ho fatto dei escursioni a piedi nel circondario di Riesi attraversando vigneti e uliveti fino a Falconara).Voglio ringraziare partico-larmente Gianluca Fiusco e Angela Siciliano. Al Servi-zio e a tutti gli attivi e colla-boratori auguro un buon futuro con successo. Speriamo che il Servizio Cristia-no come buon esempio per un progetto potrà fare il suo la-voro in Sicilia per tanti altri anni e decen-ni.

4. An dieser Stelle ist auch zu betonen, dass die täglichen Arbeiten in der Werkstatt oder auf dem Gelände mit Guiseppe und Simon meinen Aufen-thalt bereichert haben. Es war eine gute Teamarbeit mit gegenseitiger Wertschätzung, viel Durchhalte-vermögen und Vertrauen.

Obwohl die klimatischen Rahmenbedin-gungen für meinen Aufenthalt im Februar und März mit (viel) Regen Schnee und Kälte mich und alle Mitarbeitenden in Riesi auf die Probe stellten, blieb dennoch an Wochenenden die Zeit die Insel Sizi-lien näher kennenzulernen (z.B. Ausflüge und Aufenthalte in Palermo, Agrigento,

Catania, Syrakus, Taormina und kleine Wandertouren im Umfeld von Riesi durch Weinberge und Olivenhaine nach Falconara). Ich danke herzlich besonders Gianluca Fiusco sowie auch An-gela Sicilano und wünsche dem

Servizio und allen Aktiven & Engagierten weiterhin eine

gute erfolgreiche Zu-kunft. Hoffentlich wird das Servizio Cristiano als ein „Leuchtturm-Projekt“ noch viele Jahre und Jahr-zehnte in Sizilien seine Arbeit ma-

My name is Albrecht Birx, I live in Ko-blenz on the Rhine (Germany), am 56 years old and I passed 6 weeks in spring at the Servizio Cristiano.It began with the fact, that I, in my work as consultant for the youth at the evan-gelic circle of the church in Koblenz, had accumulated many long ours. This was the occasion for me to stop and to look at my ‘energy and motivation store’. If one makes a multifacted work, works in a leadership position for many years and has to support structures, the energies are on the decline (even if you take ho-lidays regularly). Because of this I took the decision, that I would take all the long ours that I had accumulated, that I would take a 9-week-timeout of my work and that I would go into a SABATTICAL. In the thinking phase I developed the idea to pass this time in a country with a multila-yer culture and to get involved in a project there. So it results from the fact, that I had already heard, read and seen much about the Valdesian in the North of Italy, that I got in contact with this special social project in

Sicily. I wasn’t a tipical young volunteer, be-cause of this it was necessary to write many mails at the direction of the Servizio Cristia-no, until there were no more problems and

Je m’appelle Albrecht Birx (56 ans), j’habite à Coblence sur le Rhin (Alle-magne), et j’ai passé pendant le dernier printemps plusieurs semaines à Riesi. Comme j’avais accumulé de nom-breuses heures supplémentaires dans mon travail comme référent jeunes-se du district protestant de Coblen-ce, l’idée s’est peu à peu imposée à moi de prendre un temps sabbati-que. L’intérêt pour l’Eglise vaudoise et pour l’étranger m’ont conduit à venir comme volontaire atypique (je n’ai pas la jeunesse de la plupart des volontaires actuels) au Servizio Cri-stiano. Avec une consigne importan-te : pas de travail intellectuel.Par conséquent, j’ai été intégré après mon arrivée le 9 février dans l’équipe du concierge, Giuseppe, et du volontaire autrichien, Simon, pour effectuer des réparations, du travail à l’atelier et de petites con-structions etc.Voici les trésors que j’ai découverts lors de mon expérience sabbatique:

1. Pendant 7 semaines je me suis passé de la radio, de la télévi-sion et des actualités. Au lieu

It was a luck, that in tho office of the Servizio Cristiano worked a colleague with knowledges of the german language, who relieved very much the communication and the necessary cla-rifications. Thanks!The many treasures of experience of my time-out are these ones:

1. To get along for 7 weeks without news, radio and television and to occupy oneself with oneself. To read the literature about Sicily and to take notes about the journey in the diary. In the apartement it was possibile to use the television, but without it I could fill in my time with something else (for example I could go to sleep early) , without any distraction.

2. So also my thoughts became more calm and didn’t divagate. Because of this, I could concentrate myself on the essential after work.

3. Doing all this physical work, I, as a ‘brain-person’ was exploited, but also content, because I had finisced all the manual exercises. During these works in the environment or at the buildings, genereally one has always the feeling to have mastered and repaired so-mething. Such feelings of success, that occur every day, you can’t find frequen-tly in the pedagogical every day life.

de cela, je me suis consacré à moi-même et pris le temps de lire des guides de voyages sur la Sicile que j’avais apportés et d’inscrire mes pensées dans un journal. Une télé était à di-sposition, mais j’ai fait le choix de remplir mon temps sans distraction et autrement, no-tamment en m’endormant plus tôt.

2. Il s’est trouvé que les pensées se sont apaisés, ne vagabon-daient plus constamment et que je suis arrivé à me concen-trer mieux sur l’essentiel après avoir fait mon travail.

3. Homme de tête habituelle-ment, l’activité physique du travail m’a rapidement épuisé. Mais j’ai éprouvé une satisfac-tion intérieure d’avoir mené à bien des taches artisanales. De ces travaux sur le terrain ou les bâtiments, on a toujours tiré le sentiment d’avoir réparé et accompli quelque chose. Ce genre d’expérience de réussite n’est pas quotidienne dans mon travail pédagogique.

4. A cet endroit, j’aimerais insi-ster sur le fait que les travaux quotidiens à l’atelier ou sur le terrain avec Giuseppe et Simon ont enrichi mon séjour. J’ai ap-précié l’esprit d’équipe nourri

Even if the climate during my stay in Fe-bruary and March, with a lot of rain, snow and cold proved me and all the col-leagues in Riesi, on the weekends re-mained the time to get to know better the Island Sicily (for example I made trips to Palermo, Agrigent, Catania, Syracus, Taormina and other little trek-king trips in the en-vironment of Riesi through vineyards and olive groves to Falconara).I say thank you especially to Gianluca Fiusco and to Angela Siciliano and wish the Servizio Cristiano and all the actives a nice and successfully future. Hopefully the Servizio Cristiano can do its work in Sicily, also as a good example for others, for many other years and decades.
