Chi ha costruito i primi terrazzamenti, pa- recchi secoli fa, non era consapevole di segnare il destino di così tante generazioni future e della loro terra. Dal suo operare ha preso forma un paesaggio unico, che è l’essenza delle Cinque Terre e che, inconsa- pevolmente, ha donato ad un territorio un fascino tale da sedurre ogni visitatore. L’origine della viticultura alle Cinque Terre è avvolta nel mistero. Nu- merose ipotesi, non documentate storicamente, vogliono fissare l’inizio della coltivazione già in epoca romana, in realtà le prime fonti docu- mentate risalgono dopo l’anno Mille. Ad alimentare la costruzione di terrazzamenti adibiti a coltura fu l’influsso delle signorie locali e dei monaci benedettini insediati sull’Isola del Tino. Lo sviluppo concreto della produzione e vendita di vino si ebbe intorno al 1200 quando la Vernaccia, lo Sciacchetrà dell’epoca, inziò ad essere esportato anche al di fuori della Repubblica di Genova. A seguire la storia della viticultu- ra, in questo territorio così difficile, ha goduto di una costante crescita nonostante alcuni periodi di grandi crisi, in particolare durante il 1700, fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri quando, nel 1973, è stata riconosciuta la Denominazione di Origine Controllata alla produzione vitivinicola, frut- to di tante fatiche: il Cinque Terre DOC, vino bianco secco da tavola, e il Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà DOC, il prezioso vino passito. Grazie all’istitu- zione dell’Ente Parco è stato possibile osservare una lenta ma graduale ripresa della coltivazione e della conseguente produzione vinicola. Those who built the first terraces, many centuries ago, weren’t aware that they were sealing the fate of so many future generations and their land. From their work a unique landscape took shape, which is the essence of the Cinque Terre and which unknowingly gave such charm to this piece of land, capable of fascinating each visitor. The origin of viticulture in the Cinque Terre is surrounded by mystery. Numerous hypotheses, not historically documented, set the beginning of the farming already in Ancient Roman times, but the first documents sources stem from after the year one thousand.The influence of the local governments and the Benedictine monks who were located on the Tino island was crucial for the construction of terraces for agriculture. The concrete development of wine production and sale took place around 1200, when the Vernaccia wine, which was the then Sciacchetrà, began to be exported also outside the Republic of Genoa. After that, the his- tory of wine culture, in such a difficult land, has seen a constant growth despite some periods of crisis, especially during the 18th century, and in 1973 the following wines were awarded the DOC label as the result of so much labour: The Cinque Terre DOC, a dry table white wine, and the Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà DOC, the precious liquor wine.
