THE DINNER I NOSTRI RAGAZZI synopsis
Two brothers, who have opposite characters and make opposite life choices: Massimo (Alessandro Gassmann) is a trendy lawyer and Paolo (Luigi Lo Cascio) is a paediatrician, their wives are constantly in
conflict. They have been meeting once a month for many years in a luxury restaurant just to respect a tradition. Their conversation is always inconsistent: salted anchovies with ricotta and fried vegetables, the most recent French film to come out, the fruity scent of a wine, the latest corrupt politician. But one evening
a security camera films a bravado of their respective children and the family’s balance is utterly shattered.
How will the two men, two families so different, faceup to a tragic event that involves them so closely? Freely inspired by “The Dinner” by Herman Koch, this is a provocative look at the often unseen underside of
contemporary bourgeois family life, that poses the questions to us all: How well do we really know our children? How well do we know ourselves?

THE DINNER I NOSTRI RAGAZZI Director’s notes
I have always been fascinated by "families" seen as miniature reproductions of the society that surrounds them. I come from one of them. A large family which seduced me with its great contradictions. With "La
bella gente" and then "Gli equilibristi" I wanted to examine what happens when an external element spoils that tranquil and safe life of a very normal and seemingly happy nucleus. With "I nostri ragazzi" I wanted to take it a step further, by trying to show what happens when the explosion comes from within.
The novel "The Dinner" by Herman Koch had fascinated me for the bluntness, frankness and truthfulness
with which it handles themes and situations. And I wanted to shoot a film that dealt with violence, the hidden kind, kept at bay but which can explode by chance, by mistake, in anyone of us. When this happens,
characters change, roles reverse. Being a father, I asked myself up until what point can we or should we ignore our conscience to protect our happiness? The heart's reasons are often in conflict with justice. And there is a very deep difference between what we are and the image of ourselves that we create day by day.
The choice of actors was fundamental as ever. During the writing stage I love to think of roles with the face
and movements of the actors I want to ask. I had the enormous luck of being told yes by all of them. Giovanna gave me her motherhood. And she managed to create a character that treads a balance between fragility and impetus. Luigi and Alessandro, two such different men and actors, were exactly what was
needed to represent Koch's brothers. Barbora, so cold and warm at the same time, a cloud that hides the rock. And then the kids. Difficult, nasty that many other actors might have refused. Jacopo Olmo is yet to turn twenty, but he's an experienced professional: you ask and he does. And Rosabell that in "Gli equilibristi"
was a sweet little girl, here accepted to play a role that was originally a boy, but which I wanted to transform into girl on the one hand to startle the viewer and on the other to work with her again.
