FOREWORD

Acronyms and initialisms have been used as communicaiton tools throughouthistory: consider QED (quod erat disputandum) or SPQR (senatus populusqueromanus). They serve as a shorthand for long expressions, consequentlyrendering our efforts more efficient. Lately, however, the proliferation ofacronyms has reached staggering proportions as lexicographers of varioustechnical dictionaries can attest. Many acronyms have more than oneinterpretation, and in many instances acronym usage has become anencumbrance rather than a convenience. This GACIAC handbook offers asolution to the problems that acronyms can present.

The second edition of the Handbook of Smart Weapon and PGM RelatedAcronyms and Terms has been expanded to include entries relating to newweapon systems, organizations and technical terminology. All of the termsincluded in the first edition have been retained. Furthermore, the handbook ispublished in both paper and electronic format. A diskette has been includedwhich offers the same handbook in .pdf format. The find function can be used tolocate an entry.

GUIDANCE AND CONTROL INFORMATIONANALYSIS CENTER (GACIAC)

GACIAC is a DoD Information Analysis Center operated by lIT Research instituteunder the technical sponsorship of the Joint Service Guidance and Control Committeewith memebers from OSD, Army, Navy, Air Force, and ARPA. The AMC SmartWeapons Management Office of the U.S. Army Missile Command provides theContracting Officer's Technical Representative. GACIAC's mission is to assist theguidance and control community by encouraging and facilitating the exchange anddissemination of technical data and information for the purpose of effecting coordinationof research, exploratory development, and advanced technology demonstrations. Toaccomplish this, GAICAC's functions are to:

1. Develop a machine-readable bibliographic database-currently containing over 50,000 entries;

2. Collect, review, and store pertinent documents in its field ofinterest-the library contains over 30,000 reports;

3. Analyze, appraise, and summarize information and data onselected subjects;

4. Disseminate information through the GACIAC Bulletin,bibliographies, state-of-the-art summaries, technologyassessments, handbooks, special reports, and conferences;

5. Respond to technical inquiries related to tactical weaponguidance and control; and

6. Provide technical and administrative support to the JointService Guidance and Control Committee (JSGCC).

The products and services of GACIAC are available to qualified industrial usersthrough a subscription plan or individual sales. Government personnel are eligible forproducts and services. A written request on government stationery is required toreceive all the products as a government subscriber.
