After graduating I was hired by Mario Cucinella Architects (Bologna) where I wor-ked as an architect on national and international projects at different scales, both individually and in team. The project goal is the conversion of two war towers, dating back to WWII, located in the oldest city park of Vienna. The two towers, known as “Flakturme”, were used as anti-aircraft towers during the war. After a plentiful analysis of hi-story, background, context, fun-ctions, and materials of the towers, I developed a project proposal to convert them into a park cultural center. The first tower (G-Turm) concept involves a theater, as well as spa-ces for exhibitions and art work-shops. The volumes are designed as differently orientated structu-res crossing a large central space, lit from above. The second tower (L-Turm) con-cept provides a library with all the pertinent functions. A stereo-metric scan of plans, progressively smaller, leaves space for a big void to ceiling that houses on top a vo-lume for the media section. The light comes from a large window created from the north façade, while the top has been transfor-med into a roof garden.

The project points to a competi-tion for the design of a new ur-ban railway station in the city of Rome, in Piazza Zama. The com-petition involves the construction of a railway station building with related functions, a large shopping area, and an office building (not developed in the studio). The desi-gn main choice consisted in cove-ring much of the railway line with a wide pedestrian area connected to the pre-existing piazza Zama. In this new context, the station building is developed as a linear volume, which crosses perpendi-cularly the track, characterized by a dense scanning of tall pillars interspersed with narrow stained glass. At the lowest level there are the train tracks as well as a smal-ler square, accessible through a wide ramp, with a large number of shops. A big part of the platform area is communicating with both the railway station building and the shopping plaza, and is sur-mounted by a semi transparent roof that allows the flow of abun-dant sun light from above.

A SUSTAINABLE CONVERSIONSustainable Design | 2012/2013

The main topic of the study was the conversion of an old military area located in front of the MA-XXI museum. During a first desi-gn stage, we worked in a team of 4 on the masterplan, taking deci-sions such as selective demolition of the abandoned barracks. Then we worked for two weeks with other students from the Universi-tät Liechtenstein for a workshop, deepening some issues of the ma-sterplan. Finally, in groups of 2, we developed a single building, a student residence. Consisting of 4 levels and with a linear develop-ment, the building was divided lengthwise into 2 parts: on one side students rooms or services, on the other a large glazed distribu-tion space that houses the stairs, balconies as well as three volumes containing other students services. The massive wall dividing the two sides is composed of reused bri-cks from the old barracks. Other aspects, such as the solar panels on the roof, were treated in a su-stainable way as well.

A RIVERSIDE HOME FOR STUDENTSDesign Studio IV | 2012/2013

Location: Rome, Italy - Città Giardino

Type: Landscape Design - Residential

Tutor: Marina Pia Arredi

The area of the project is a large lot next to garden city aniene, in Rome, directly overlooking the river. The aims were to develop student residences, some rela-ted services available also for the neighborhood, redesign the park directly in contact with the river, and to place a footbridge linking the new buildings to a square (de-signed as well). My project was based on the concept of a series of buildings of small size, with a cen-tral courtyard, trying to merge the courtyard buildings on the west side of the river and the smaller buildings in the city garden. By a ramp on the west side it’s possible to get down to the lowest altitude where there is a larger suspen-ded building containing a library. From here is possible to access to the new park, consisting of a re-petition of axes that divide paved clearings, fields and basins of wa-ter, or is possible to cross the river to reach a small square on three levels which houses some urban functions.

Shown above are some works for two studios. One was focused on small design, giving importance mainly to internal spatiality. The other, instead, was focused on the development of a transparent va-riable two-layer roof in ETFE and glass. This was presented as a five minute video, here I report some images that are relevant to the purposes of my portfolio.
