REPRESENTATION AND DESIGN ALONG THE VOLTURNO RIVER.

Alessandro Ciambrone

Department of Architecture and Industrial Design

Seconda Universitàdi Napoli

The multi-disciplinary research on the critical study of repre-sentation in the cultural and landscape heritage of the Voltur-no River between the city of Capua and the sea, involved the students of the “Aesthetics of Landscape” course at the De-partment of Architecture and Industrial Design, SUN, in the academic year 2013-14. The students developed an analysis and project concerning the five river municipalities in the area of study: Capua, Santa Maria La Fossa, Grazzanise, Can-cello and Arnone, and Castel Volturno. The Volturno River - the main waterway of Southern Italy for both length and water flow - links all five municipalities and was the gate-way to the hinterland for those who, coming from the sea, intended to advance inside, until the Casilinum port (current Capua). The students carried out the academic exercise us-ing complex representation tools, reading maps at different spatial scales, studying and searching literature sources, interviewing key territorial stakeholders as well as carrying out photographic surveys. These analysis tools allowed them to survey the cultural, landscape, and immaterial assets. In particular, the photographic survey and landscape analysis are related to the history, traditions, agricultural production, archaeological assets, emergencies, natural and cultural heritage of the area. In adittion, they considered elements of degradation, such as landfills and illegal constructions that have contributed, over the years, to undermining the Ager Campanus recognized to be the ‘Garden of Europe’ by trav-ellers of the XVIII century. Nevertheless, the landscapes of the Volturno remains beautiful and can become an asset, not only aesthetic, but also economic, for the economic devel-opment of the territory, for example, through the creation of cultural and tourist routes. The students developed thematic maps related to the historical, rural, flood, urban, contem-porary, and aesthetic landscapes. Starting from this analy-

in-depth analyses of the soil and waters this project will use the innovative technical instruments by Benecon and Top-con Positioning System (Toshiba Group) worldwide leader for technical instruments and dynamic monitoring (coopera-tion agreement signed in 2010). The monitoring of the criti-cal conditions of the territory can be utilized by the public administration to develop and apply the necessary security measures to re-establish the environmental standards re-quired by law. Additionally, the data recorded can be utilized to create maps that highlight the polluted areas, to provide specific and necessary intervention to those areas and re-establish the credibility of all professional activities, from agri-culture to tourism. Moreover, said data can be used by public and private administrations to provide evidence to insurance companies in the case of legal actions for economic reim-bursement against those who provoked the environmental damage. The successful implementation of such reimburse-ment ex post will reduce environmental crimes and will in-crease supervision on the part of the public administration in charge of the territory’s security.

sis, they developed the project, consisting in the creation of a ‘cultural district’ including the fluvial axis, the cultural and landscape heritage of Campania [in particular the six World Heritage properties (WHp): Caserta, Napoli, Pompeii, Amalfi, the Cilento, and Benevento (Italia Langobardorum)], and the emblematic sites of the region: Mt. Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia, and Procida, and the Phlegraean Fields. The objective was to enhance not only the sites of excellence but also the as-sets less recognized by scientific literature and international travellers. This can be achieved through the realization of a network system, which, in line with Article 12 of the World Heritage Convention, enhances the minor heritage and con-siders it at the same importance of a WHp. The fact that a property belonging to the cultural or natural heritage has not been included in the World Heritage list shall in no way be construed to mean that it does not have an outstanding universal value for purposes other than those resulting from inclusion in these list. Capua, for example, great protagonist of European and Mediterranean history, preserves traces, signs, extraordinary monuments of Western history. Further-more, Castel Volturno, on the sea, is famous for the natural Oasis of Variconi, protected by the Ramsar Convention. The extraordinary historical and cultural heritage is not only for the five municipalities. In the cultural district of reference, there is Santa Maria Capua Vetere, which, as the Latin name says, is the old (Vetere) Capua. It can be accessed through the old Roman road, Via Appia. This was a very rich city, full of extraordinary monuments. First, its impressive Amphithe-atre, which, for its dimensions, is the second in Europe after the Coliseum. The area also hosts the Real Site of Card-itello that was part of a group of 22 Royal Sites realized by the Bourbon dynasty in the province of Caserta. The most valuable Site is the Royal Palace of Caserta which – along with San Leucio and the Carolino Aqueduct – in 1997 was included in the World Heritage list.
