The group of "power users" that consume at least one terabyte of Internet data per month doubled in Q1 2019 to include about 4.2% of all broadband subscribers, according to a new industry report from OpenVault, a company that provides data and analytics to various broadband operators. Those results follow closely with Cisco's latest VNI Global IP Traffic Forecast, which also found that the number of Internet homes exceeding 1TB in monthly data usage doubled from 2016 to 2017. While the overall percentage of consumers that gobble up at least 1TB of data is still relatively small, the rate of that growth could force some cable operators and other ISPs to tweak their monthly data usage policies. In a trial environment conducted with Nokia and Intel in California, Verizon achieved full virtualization of baseband functions – the heaviest portion of computing on the Radio Access Network (RAN). Intel provided its Xeon Scalable processor-based platforms and FlexRAN reference architecture while Nokia provided its new AirScale All-in-Cloud Base Station architecture. Verizon said this virtualization will enable the network to be hardware agnostic, using Common Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware, leading to greater flexibility and speed to deployment of products and services. “Having virtualized the core of the network last year, this significant step forward in virtualizing the RAN edge is a critical piece of providing the next generation of wireless solutions for consumers and enterprises,” said Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “With a virtualized baseband unit, we will lay the foundation to be able to move computing functionality to the edge of the network and will be able to rapidly respond to customers’ varied latency and computing needs.” "Nokia is a leader in driving and commercializing Cloud RAN innovations, and we are excited to be a part of this collaborative work that represents a key milestone for Verizon’s cloud migration,” said Michael Clever, Senior Vice President and Head of Cloud RAN, Nokia. “This successful trial is an important step in offering flexible and scalable capacity, plus continuous software delivery.” Tags: 5G

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G speed tests carried out on Verizon in Chicago have shown that the device and service are capable of delivering blazing speeds – when you can manage to get a 5G signal. And the limited coverage isn’t the only challenge to getting 5G connections on the device: you also have to be careful how you hold it … Digital Trends carried out the tests, and the headline numbers were seriously impressive.

When I tested the Moto Z3 with the Moto Mod in April, when Verizon launched its 5G network, my average download speeds were around 450Mbps, according to the Speedtest app by Ookla. The highest download speed I hit was 624Mbps. The Galaxy S10 5G put those numbers to shame. The network is more developed, so the highest I hit on the S10 5G with the same Speedtest app was 1.35Gbps. That’s right, Gigabit.

And that does translate to real-world benefits. It took me just 93 seconds to download the entire season of Sneaky Pete (10 episodes) from Amazon Prime Video. It took 23 seconds to download PUBG: Mobile from the Galaxy Store (around 1.86GB); and it took around 30 seconds to download one episode of The Flash from Netflix […] Imagine if these 5G nodes were at the airport — you could potentially download several seasons of a show in minutes before boarding the plane. This is the most immediate and most noticeable improvement we’ll see with 5G.

It goes without saying that bringing 5G to the world is a very expensive undertaking, but just how expensive might surprise you. Globally according to analysis from Greensill (a provider of working capital finance) the cost could exceed $2.7 trillion by the end of 2020. But only around $1 trillion of that is expected to go into direct 5G infrastructure investment, with the bulk being required to realise the potential of the internet of things – which is set to be one of the main features of 5G that makes it differ from 4G. Estonia's government hired Velsberg last August to run a new project to introduce AI into various ministries to streamline services offered to residents. Deploying AI is crucial, he says. “Some people worry that if we lower the number of civil employees, the quality of service will suffer. But the AI agent will help us." About 22 percent of Estonians work for the government; that’s about average for European countries, but higher than the 18 percent rate in the US. Siim Sikkut, Estonia’s chief information officer, began piloting several AI-based projects at agencies in 2017, before hiring Velsberg last year. Velsberg says Estonia has deployed AI or machine learning in 13 places where an algorithm has replaced government workers. For example, inspectors no longer check on farmers who receive government subsidies to cut their hay fields each summer. Satellite images taken by the European Space Agency each week from May to October are fed into a deep-learning algorithm originally developed by the Tartu Observatory. Why Netflix will never have as big a hit as 'Game of Thrones' Bel pezzo di semiotica televisiva

Let the water cooler talk begin. The most iconic show of the past decade has finally come to an end, and while some fans aren’t exactly thrilled with the ending, one thing is for certain. All of your family, friends, and colleagues will be debating the final episode this week, and sharing their take on what should, or should not have happened. Over the course of the past six weeks, I can’t remember a time when pop culture has been so wrapped up in a series like HBO's "Game of Thrones." From strangers dressing up like their favorite characters in the streets, to office polls, to the millions of posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter that are almost impossible to escape, everybody has been talking about it. My neighbor even has a flag of a dire wolf hanging from his front porch. Amidst all of this, as a huge fan of the show, I couldn’t stop thinking about one thing this last month. Specifically, how much I enjoyed the anticipation between episodes and debate among friends that resulted from the episodes being released weekly. In the industry, this is called “Windowing,” and it’s entirely counterintuitive with the success of Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and all of our new favorite streaming platforms, which have been dumping their entire new seasons out on the release date.

Appointment TV

This type of viewing behavior is great for old reruns of "The Office" and "Friends," which make up the lion’s share of the viewing minutes on services like these. But for new releases, it takes away half of the enjoyment for us to regularly share our minds and process the material with others. Indeed, all of us are constantly at different stages in our binging of shows that are released in this manner, so there’s never even a reliable chance to discuss. For this reason, successful shows on Netflix will always fail to stack up against hit shows on other networks that are “windowed” because they’ll never have the same opportunity to capture the conversation away from the TV set the way that appointment-based television can.

I was going to go deeper into this, as we had a great discussion on this at our Pay TV Show event in Denver last week, but this CNBC article beat me to it. However, what we didn’t have time to discuss, and what this article fails to address, is that this isn’t really a problem for Netflix at all. In fact, Netflix could probably care less. As Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, once said, “To make all of America do the same thing at the same time is enormously inefficient, ridiculously expensive, and most of the time, not a very satisfying experience.” Netflix is not as interested in capturing conversation while you’re away from the TV as much as it is in giving you the best possible experience when you’re actually watching. It does this not only through its industry-leading user UX with best-in-class recommendation capabilities, but also the industry’s biggest budget for original content across basic, non sports entertainment. To that extent, from premium content, to kids programming, family, documentary, lifestyle, you name it, Netflix’s goal is to replace the entire basic entertainment bundle. Event-based TV — whether sports, news or shows like "Game of Thrones" — may actually be the only type of programming that Netflix is not trying to replace. By staying away from appointment-based viewing, it's able to do two things:

1. Keep its brand promise and superior UX, where you can watch all of your favorite content as soon as you’d like, and

2. Fulfill its role as the de facto service for the majority of your TV needs, while consumers churn on/off for other services that rotate through the occasional mega hit show.

So in short, if Netflix can own the majority of your time in front of the TV and relegate the HBO’s and Showtime’s of the world to “event-based television,” then I suspect it will be quite fine with that, even if it will never be able to produce a show that captures the public eye the same way that "Game of Thrones" has done for us this past decade.
