FROM FATHER CHUCK I hope everyone had a safe, restful and joyful 4th of July weekend. We were blessed with good weather. It was

nice to welcome visitors among us and to welcome back parishioners who have been away in person since the clo-sures of the pandemic. It also was nice to celebrate a Communion procession again by having most people come forward to receive. Slow, but steady progress as we see our way out of the effects of the pandemic in our area. Of course, we still emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated for all those who are able to do so. Clearly, that is the best way out of the mess we have been in. We also keep in prayer the many countries around the world who are still struggling terribly with COVID. May nations like our own rally to help those in dire circumstances with the neces-sary vaccines, oxygen, and other medical equipment. As it has been said many times, we are not rid of the dangers of this virus until all nations have it under control.

A couple of other things we’re working on to return to in the liturgy are taking up of the collection and bringing forth the bread and wine to the altar. I want to be sure that we have the people at each Mass to facilitate these things. I know some really like bringing their own gift to the altar. I think it is a great visual when people rise and come forward to place their donations in the basket. We will keep one basket at the sanctuary (or two when we have a special collection) for at least a while. I know as the church fills up it may become a bit more difficult for people to get out of the pew. There are also those who prefer the collection basket come to them.

While I’m on the subject of the collection, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been so sup-portive of the parish over these many months of safety restrictions: the many who couldn’t come but sent in their do-nations, the on-line givers, the many who have brought forth their donations to the sanctuary as well as those who gave extra to help out for the many who couldn’t give. We finished our fiscal year strong on June 30, despite the school boiler needing to be replaced, and that is thanks to all of you. Next month we will have a year-end report in the bulletin showing how the year went. THANK YOU for your generosity and ongoing support!

I am pleased to announce that, thanks mostly to a prior donation of parishioner Sam Dibitonto, we will be putting down new flooring in the gift shop and what has been the carpeted area of Righini Hall. We will be using a high-grade wood-like surface that you’re seeing in many commercial settings. It will lighten up the hall and be much easi-er to keep clean and maintain. We won’t need to do a fundraiser for this one. We have been holding Sam’s donation for the proper time. Thanks Sam! The room will also be getting a paint job. Thank you, also, to our parish music coordinator, Anne Buja-Koloc, who is donating her design expertise to coordinate this job. We hope to get this com-pleted during the month of July.

The Diocese of Las Vegas is getting a new bishop. As the Las Vegas area continues to grow, the Bishop of Las Vegas, George Thomas, requested the support of an auxiliary bishop. Thus, Msgr. Greg Gordon, a priest of the Diocese of Las Vegas, will be ordained auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Las Vegas on this Friday, July 16. While Las Vegas has about the same number of parishes and missions that Reno has, with a total Catholic population of about 620,000 Bishop Thomas can use the extra support in shepherding the Diocese of Las Vegas, originally a part of the Diocese of Reno, which encompassed the entire state of Nevada. When Las Vegas began growing rapidly, Diocese of Reno Bishop Norman McFarland petitioned Rome to re-name the diocese “Reno-Las Vegas”. From 1976 until 1995 the single, statewide Catholic diocese operated under that name. In 1995 the diocese split, thus forming the Diocese of Reno (again) and the Diocese of Las Vegas. So we send our congratulations & prayers to our sister diocese in the state and to their new bishop. I have known Msgr. Greg Gordon for many years, stemming back to my days in the seminary when I was stationed for my pastoral year in North Las Vegas. I’ll be attending the ordination in the name of the Diocese of Reno.

We heartily welcome all our visitors to the Cathedral! This time of year brings more visitors our way and we are glad to have you with us from all over the country and various parts of the world. May your time with us be restful and rejuvenating. Thanks for coming to worship with us. 😊 BLESSINGS TO ALL THIS 15TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME!

¡BENDICIONES A TODOS ESTA XV SEMANA EN EL TIEMPO ORDINARIO!

CESSATION OF DISPENSATION

Brothers and sisters in Christ, At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, I granted to all Catholics in the Diocese of Reno a general dispensa-tion from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass. Since there has been a significant decline in the num-ber of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths due to the novel Coronavirus in our region, and given the lifting of mitigation restrictions, this dispensation will cease on July 1, 2021. I encourage all Catholics to return to the practice of in-person participation in the Sunday Eucharist. The ex-perience of the pandemic underscores the need for us to gather together physically for worship and the sac-raments. The safety of all continues to be a priority as we gath-er. For this reason, I encourage all to get vaccinated if they have not already done so. Some of the faithful cannot attend Mass in person due to illness or other health issues. Obviously, they are not obligated to attend Mass for this reason. They are asked to engage in appropriate prayer in honor of the Lord’s Day. In Christ,

Bishop Randolph R. Calvo

GOD CHOSE US: Who chose first, God or you? That is the question explored in today’s three readings. The second reading, from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own. The first reading and the Gospel use prose rather than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing wasn’t his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve apostles in today’s Gospel ask for their calling. Jesus sent them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom.
