Dear Friends,

It is three years since we last published a Diocesan Yearbook and, in that time, how we relate to information has changed dramatically. We write

fewer letters and send far more e-mails. News of friends or events comes to us increasingly through social media be that Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter. We send important messages via WhatsApp and more often that is conveyed through photos or videos rather than text. Information the Diocese sends to parishes and clergy now gets routinely published in the weekly e-bulletin ‘Llandaff Matters’. And new legislation means that we must scrupulously gain the consent of someone before we can store or use their information when it is available to us. When Covid-19 limited our options in meeting together and pursuing relationships as we once knew them, many began to meet on Zoom or Teams or Skype, and we have even learnt to say our prayers with the help of an iPad and ‘shared screen’.

So why print a ‘hard copy’ of the Yearbook when life online has become ever more normal?

Part of the answer lies in how we see this Yearbook. There is no doubt that it is an immense source of information. Not a working day goes by without searching the pages for the answer to an immediate question. It might be as simple as a ‘phone number or a Churchwarden’s name. Nowhere will you get so much useful information about the diocesan family stored in one place as you can

access in this Yearbook, so a big thank you to those who have

compiled it, updated it, and who will soon be told that it is already

out of date! That hardly matters because we know the diocese is constantly shifting. I love the scribblings which I accumulate to correct the information as circumstances change and people move.

Yet a Diocesan Yearbook is about more than just information. It is one of the symbols of our diocesan life. Our diocese is more than a collection of addresses, or a list of parishes becoming Ministry Areas, or of names of clergy and lay officers. It is far more than information.It is the people of God serving their specific parish communities but also belonging together, through their relationship with their bishop, and their Anglican heritage, and their diocesan identity. When you handle this Yearbook, you hold a lot of those personal histories, but you also hold our commitment to the whole diocesan community, with all its variety and its desire to faithfully proclaim the gospel. It’s in these pages that we hold an emblem of our connectedness, our pilgrim companionship with one another, the richness of what it means to be the Diocese of Llandaff.

3The Diocesan VisionThe Diocesan Vision Where Faith Matters,is that all may encounter and know the love of God.

WHERE FAITH MATTERS


Where Faith Matters seeks to create growth within the Church and a positive narrative of the relevance and continuity of faith in today’s increasingly secular society. It challenges us to form new ways of being Church and sharing faith today as we live out Christs messages of hope and love. As a Diocese we committed to supporting this Vision last year and have begun the work since then to translate that into practical support and resources and to make things actually happen. This work has been centred on creating new resources and initiatives for the whole Diocese that in some way further one or more of our shared aims:

– Telling a joyful story – Growing the Kingdom of God – Building our capacity for good

Many clergy and lay people were involved with that planning and apart from the Covid-19 crisis delaying some aspects this year, many new things have begun from a new vocations team in place, to new digital communications and ways of sharing worship online, from the beginnings of Citizen Church (our resourcing church based in Cardiff) to ideas of pilgrimage and, behind the scenes, the restructuring of committees and staff.

We are very fortunate that the Diocesan Standing Committee and Diocesan Board of Finance have committed significant funds to support the scale of the ambition across the whole Vision.

As additional support we were also successful in receiving a substantial grant from the provincial Evangelism Fund earlier this year, specifically for the elements of our vision which introduce children and young people to faith. This part of the Vision is entitled Young Faith Matters and is focussed on supporting parishes in growing their relationships with children and young people, especially through their schools.

Emergence from lockdown and its long-term impact is unknown. But there is much planned that we can still deliver. With an emphasis on lay training, renewed ways of ministering, outreach to our local communities, as well as the work with children and young people, there is much in the pipeline and for which there is arguably increased appetite now and certainly need. It is an uncertain time but also a time of new possibilities.

The Vision Where Faith Matters is therefore even more important than ever in ensuring that all may know and encounter God.

Young Faith MattersAt the beginning of 2020, the Church in Wales Evangelism Fund awarded us a grant of £3m for a new and ambitious outreach project which will engage the missing generation of church-goers – children, students, and young adults. Working in partnership with schools and churches across the diocese, Young Faith Matters project will pioneer a large-scale, school-focussed strategy for young faith engagement in Wales. The project will also revitalise church for a younger generation by establishing a resource church in the heart of Cardiff’s student population, serving the needs of students and young families.

Young Faith Matters aims to deepen the discipleship of young people, supporting and guiding them through the challenges of life. It will provide a full spectrum of opportunities for encountering faith from birth to the time that young people are having their own families.

The project will support new ways of working with children and young people in parishes and Ministry Areas especially in our local authority schools. Through new Engagement Workers and new initiatives, we hope to reach more of the 30% of children aged under 18 in Wales that live in our Diocese.

The twenty-five Church in Wales schools in the Diocese are also akey aspect of Young Faith Matters. With more than 8,500 children and young people attending our schools we have a wonderful opportunity to support these young people’s spiritual development.

And this, in a nutshell, is our communication and outreach strategy – sharing God’s love and Christ’s message of hope to change lives.

God has blessed us with new ways to communicate. We are using social media and traditional communication to inspire more and more people to grow the Kingdom of God. Jesus did not save his teachings or prayers for the temple – he went out to where the people were and changed the world!

Similarly, by embracing social media to minister and inspire we can share Christs love beyond our church buildings.Online church complements the physical experience. We use social media to connect with people, to share our joyful story so that they too may come to know Christ. The online world is another door into the church – a way to invite people to join us and a way to encourage followers of Christ to deepen their faith.

Sharing joyful stories of faith in action to engage and inspire discipleship is at the heart of our outreach work. Our impact in the community cannot be overestimated, and there continues to be an increasing demand for our services.

Communication and OutreachOur outreach strategy focuses on these three areas:

– Poverty and debt.– Loneliness and mental wellbeing.– Drug and substance misuse.

Churches have always been at the heart of the communities we serve - and we always will be.

We are passionate about developing ministry within the diocese by enabling and empowering all God’s people to grow in faith, to discern his will for their lives and to build his kingdom. The ministry strand of the diocesan vision has been structured and tailored by the ministry delivery group and the diocesan ministry team are working to the key strategic aims and objectives they have identified.

There are three strategic aims:– To tell a joyful story of God’s love and

hope through a confident sharing of faith and service in our communities, which transforms lives.

– To grow the Kingdom of God, building a future where faith matters, through innovation and the courage to adapt.

– To build our capacity for good by articulating faith, growing leadership and producing better decision-making.

To accomplish these three strategic aims there are five principle objectives we plan to develop and deliver:– Develop a clear plan for ministry

offered in the diocese to fit the needs of mission for now and what

lies ahead. – Provide training for both laity and

the ordained to serve our plan for ministry.

– Recruit able clergy to realistic posts and ensure they are well supported in their vocation, caring for their wellbeing and spiritual growth.

The Diocesan Vision: Ministry

– Increase vocations to ordained and lay ministry.

– Work with one another and those outside of church in a spirit of compassion, curiosity and courtesy.

Some of the outcomes of these objectives include progress in the creation of ministry areas, the employment of a vocations advocate, a vocations strategy, ministerial development and wellbeing study days and webinars, and the pending introduction of ministry enablers. While the Director of Ministry, Canon Richard Lowndes, oversees the work of the ministry team, ensuring that our aims are met and our objectives delivered, ministry is the responsibility and concern of all the baptized and we share this work together to build up the life of our diocese.
