The book “Sonographic Atlas for Common Musculoskeletal Pathologies” represents the second output of the same project that has produced “Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine”.Musculoskeletal ultrasound is user-dependent, thus it strongly needs training with a mentor and ‘maintenance’ education. Accordingly, the main purpose of this second book is to provide plenty of examples concerning the most commonly scanned musculoskeletal pathologies, and thus to ll the gap of long-term supervised education. The sections of the book are organized as regions in an anatomy atlas, i.e. starting from head and neck down to ankle and foot. In each section, the subsections are arranged in accordance with the anatomical structures. There are 500 images and 20 related videos, and the text is based mainly on the long gure legends, which also include clinical/physical examination ndings. Importantly, while reading the book, you will see parts referred as “Expert Note” at the bottom of many pages. These comments are, for sure, the most distinguishing part of the book, because they provide valuable, practical explanations, making the readers feel as if they are revising and discussing that particular US image with an expert sitting next to them.

In recent years, musculoskeletal ultra-sound (MSUS) has achieved an important role not only in clinical applications (for diagnosis and management of various musculoskeletal disorders), but also in research, due to its several advantages (being convenient, inexpensive, non-inva-sive, repeatable, providing high-resolu-tion dynamic and comparative imaging, and not requiring any exposure to radia-tion). As such, MSUS has increasingly become a valuable tool in the daily clini-cal practice of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physicians, and – where used in a rehabilitation setting – it can signifi-cantly contribute to the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm of rehabilitation patients. For these reasons, the MSUS probe can be now thought of as synonymous with the physician’s stethoscope. Additionally, scanning is quite comfortable, and some-times even more reassuring for the pa-tient than the physician: “seeing is believ-ing”.In this book, aside from drawing atten-tion to the growing issues in the agenda of PRM physicians using MSUS, the au-thors also discuss basic technical features of the technique, and focus on the both diagnostic and interventional utility of MSUS in different health conditions in-volving muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joint lesions.

Comparative anatomy: searching for a common ancestor. The primary objective of com-parative anatomical studies is the reconstruction of phylogenetics and informative char-acters of a common descent. This innovative book constitutes a tool to acquire knowl-edge on descriptive and functional morphology and to evaluate the main evolutionary steps for the different systems: i.e., form, function and evolution.

Distinctive features make this volume a unique text in the publishing scene:• Simple and precise language; • In-depth but straightforward explanations;• Highly explicative images, made specifically for this volume; • Updated scientific knowledge: chapters dedicated to immunology, evolutionary devel-

opmental biology (Evo-Devo), population genetics and human evolution, which up to now have never been included in this kind of books, here find their place together with more classical chapters on organ systems, which are described taking into consideration the most recent studies. The book is completed by valuable tools for each chapter: objectives, summary, columns

with cross references to related topics, supplementary information boxes and suggested readings, equipped with an extensive glossary.

Functional Anatomy and Imaging Locomotor system

Manrico MorroniItalian edition - Volume 22 x 28 cm - Paperback Pages 400 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-535-0

“Functional Anatomy and Imaging. Locomotor System” is a text that connects the con-tents of the anatomy to the kinesiology, namely the science that study the rational human movement in all of his forms.

The approach to the presentation of the osteology, the arthrology and the myology is propaedeutic to the study of the kinesiology: hence, the anatomical description and the analysis of the movements associated.

In order to emphasize the importance of solid anatomical bases in the clinical practice, short clinical references have been inserted and bioimaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) with high teaching quality, concerning certain regions of the locomotor system, have been used.

Treatise on Human Anatomy 4th edition

Giuseppe Anastasi et al.Italian edition - Three volumes 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover, silk cover Pages 1616 - Black and white and full colour illustrations ISBN 978-88-7051-428-5 - Price € 315,00

This treatise, aimed at the medical students at the start of their studies, presents the “discipline” (which is absolutely “fundamental” to a physician’s cultural and professional training) in its entirety, without gratuitous omissions and arbitrary simplifications. The Treatise is the irreplaceable reference source to which everybody, both at university and during professional activity, can keep on returning in order check facts, compare notes and increase his/her store of knowledge. This is why this work, now in its fourth edition, is constantly improved and updated, both in the content and in the graphic layout with the addition of new illustrations, thereby retaining its truly original style.

Human Anatomy2nd edition

Glauco Ambrosi et al.Italian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26.5 cm - Hardcover - Pages 672 600 black and white and full colour illustrations - ISBN 88-7051-288-6 - Price € 45,00

The rigorously scientific presentation of the contents, the modern graphics and the wealth of illustrations make this volume a complete reference work for study and consultation, designed in particular to meet the needs of students doing degree courses in biological and health-related disciplines. An introductory part covering the general organisation of the human body is followed by a descriptive anatomy part, characterised by the traditional subdivision into apparatuses and systems, crucial to fully acquaint the reader with all the aspects of basic anatomy and to provide the broadest possible overview of the human body. The regional anatomy section examines in depth the different parts of the human body, while the part devoted to the general principles of movement looks at the anatomical bases, joint and muscle dynamics and characteristics of muscle work. The fifth and final part (em-bryology and organogenesis) is crucial to gaining a full understanding of how organs and apparatuses develop during the embryonic and foetal period.

Microscopic Anatomy - AtlasManrico MorroniItalian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Paperback - Page 592 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-388-2 - Price € 57.00

The study of microscopic anatomy requires an in-depth knowledge and assiduous work with histological preparations: one must know how to interpret and recognise what is being seen with the microscope, while learning how to differentiate one organ from another de-spite their similar organisation (differential diagnosis). The objectives of the Atlas of Micro-scopic Anatomy are: to reproduce the laboratory experience, each structure presented on a single plane at different magnifications of optical and electron microscopy; to allow for simple and immediate reference, with accompanying tables and text on the adjacent pages. The structure or organ treated is clearly identified: the origin of the section, the type of stain-ing and microscope (electronic, transmission, scanning).

The morphology and organisation of the organ (or tissue) are described, refer-ences to biology and physiology are included to highlight the relationship between form and function. Tables and concise summaries are used to describe the criteria for dif-ferential diagnosis.

The richness and quality of microscopic images are provided by more than 600 drawings, original colour photomicrographs and electron micrographs of hu-man tissues (95% of the images were taken of sections of human organs, many of which are rare and difficult to obtain). This allows to have a fast and clear shift from a detailed view at a low magnification to that of a higher magnification, typical of electron microscopy. From an overview to a zoomed cell image to highlight its organular pattern with descriptive and clarifying texts.

The web platform Virtual Campus, an innovation in the world of microscopic anato-my atlases, assembles a rich assortment of educational materials: •interactive presentations about microscopic anatomy; •videos with commentary; •online lectures and workshops; •self-assessment tests.

Biology • Cell and Tissue •Roberto Colombo, Ettore Olmo (eds)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Paperback - Pages 712 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-400-1 - Price € 68,00

What is the cause of biodiversity? The answer lies in the concept of multilevel and hierarchical organisation by which

shared components are associated to form stable structures of ever-increasing size and complexity, whose properties cannot be deduced through the study of the single compo-nents.

In the human body, for example, the association of macromolecules results in the for-mation of subcellular organelles, which, in turn, join to give rise to cells. The association of cells gives rise to tissues, whose assembly results in the creation of organs. Our body is thus a multilevel, hierarchical system, or rather an association of subsystems within a system.

The subdivision into two sections – cell biology and tissue biology – and the graphics used make this text a useful and flexible study aid. It complies with the new teaching require-ments in several spheres of university study – biotechnology, biological sciences and envi-ronmental sciences – where the approach to and the space devoted to the study of cell biology and tissue biology can vary.

The web platform Virtual Campus represents a breakthrough in field of Cytology and Histology texts and presents a rich catalogue of interactive educational materials. To navi-gate through these resources, students can take advantage of guided and interactive courses presented in a lesson format. The platform’s contents include: •interactive views of histological slides using a virtual microscope;•commentated videos;•online lectures and workshops;•predefined evaluation tests and self-assessments.

General and Inorganic ChemistryPietro Tagliatesta (ed)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 28 cm - Paperback - Pages 608 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-490-2 - Price € 38,00

The key strength of this General and Inorganic Chemistry is its practical approach addressed to scientific courses students. Topics are structured according to the traditional method including atoms, gases, solutions, chemical thermodynamics and kinetics and electrochemistry. A single limited section is dedicated to the Organic Chemistry basis.

General and Inorganic ChemistryMaurizio Speranza (ed)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 28 cm – Paperback - Pages 856 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-336-3 - Price € 49,00

This book is addressed to students who plan to pursue degree courses of various sci-entific disciplines, including one or more courses on General and Inorganic Chemistry. Its primary goal is promoting to new generations a correct notion of Chemistry, highlighting how this science improves the quality of our life. To achieve this objective the text is struc-tured from a specific learning plan: for each topic, the students acquire basic concepts through a study of the text book and can then complete and deepen their understanding through a wide selection of different media available on the Virtual Campus platform which interactively ensure the correct acquisition of said concepts. The material presented in the text, which is both dense and complex, is particularly flexible and modulable accord-ing to different needs; additionally, the use of examples and exercises provides students with a better understanding of the material. The in-depth sections are intended for teach-ers, who therein shall find the key elements of the main text, as well as for students interested in raising their level of preparation.

Essential Organic ChemistryBruno Botta (ed)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 28 cm - Paperback - Pages 576 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-354-7 - Price € 45.00

“Essential organic chemistry” deals with the main topics of organic chemistry in a simple and clear way by accompanying the student’s learning of the discipline through a precise path, facilitated by the insertion of specific deepening frameworks and numerous exercises. The most important definitions are summarized by key concepts listed at the side of the text and a large set of images, drawings and graphics enriches it. The novelty of the work also lies in its virtual content (Virtual Campus) for the student and for the teacher.

“Essential organic chemistry” relies on the experience acquired from a wider volume and seeks to provide students with a compact tool for the study of the matter. To achieve this goal, the Authors have made an effort of synthesis by focusing on what is essential for the student who intends to acquire sustainable knowledge of the matter: general aspects and fundamentals of reactivity in organic chemistry, IUPAC nomenclature, chemical and physical properties and chemical reactivity of each particular class.

Organic Chemistry2nd edition

Bruno Botta (ed)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 28 cm - Paperback - Pages 1024 - Richly illustrated in colour - Price € 49,00

This new edition of Organic Chemistry benefits from advices and didactical experience of the previous edition. Topics are structured according to the traditional classification of compounds, including IUPAC nomenclature, chemical-physical properties and chemical reactivity.

Although maintaining the same general organization, the second edition has been im-proved in contents, legibility and topics presentation. Thus mechanisms are illustrated and supplied with different stages: easily identifiable are now organized in different frames that help to differentiate them from the text. Also the electronic transfer arrows help to rationalize and to predict reaction’s evolution.

Moreover, particular emphasis has been given to molecular modeling and to elec-trostatic potential maps. More than solved 400 tests are proposed.

Digital contents of Virtual Campus offer a wide opportunity both for professors and for students. Professors can access to all the images in electronic format and benefit from a large number of exercises for preparing tests each time different from the previous ones.

Atlas of Nasal Cytologyfor the Differential Diagnosis of Nasal DiseasesMatteo GelardiVolume 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover - Pages 212 - Richly illustrated in colour Price € 60.00

Although nasal cytology is still a little used diagnostic approach, it has often proved to be decisive: it makes it possible to distinguish between different forms of rhinopathy – inflammatory from infectious, allergic from non-allergic vasomotor, and bacterial from viral and fungal forms, as well as to diagnose the presence, in the same patient, of various “overlapping” forms. It is also important to consider other important aspects that make cytology a practical diagnostic method, accessible to all rhinoallergology services: the simplicity and low invasiveness of the technique. This book fills a gap given that, to date, there have been no textbooks or atlases dealing with this specific topic. It sets out to contribute to acquisition of the theoretical bases of modern cytology and the correct methodological approach, as well as to improve recognition and interpretation of the cy-tological changes that take place in the various diseases.

Potential readers - Otolaryngologists, allergologists, pneumologists, paediatricians.

Medical HistologyNadir Maraldi – Carlo Tacchetti (eds)Italian edition - Volume 22 x 28 cm - Paperback - Pages 704 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-389-9

Medical Histology is a modern text mainly oriented towards the “medical” aspect, in order to provide students with tools to frame the subject in the context of preclinical dis-ciplines. The text comprises experimentally acquired data, with mechanistic models that have proven validity and contribute to the understanding of physiopathological processes. The objective is to offer a study model for a complex subject, which students can apply to other disciplines during their medical education.

The volume has been divided into blocks of educational material: • Text and figures – essential topics; • In-depth analysis with figures – supplementary topics; • Areas of clinical histology – physiopathological correlations; • Additional contents in the Virtual Campus web area – multimedia supplementary material.

Each chapter is introduced by a paragraph on Prerequisites, that is, the basic knowledge necessary for a correct framing of the discussed topics, a paragraph on Study Objectives and a Summary of the topic, and is concluded by Key Concepts relative to the topics ex-amined.

Topics have been developed highlighting the differentiation mechanisms that allow, both in embryonic and adult life, the turnover and integration of stem cell elements within functionally specialized populations. The book specifically focuses on the biome-chanical properties of tissues and, considering their increasing usage, the characteristics of different populations of adult stem cells, also in association with biomaterials, in regen-erative medicine.

The web platform – Virtual Campus – includes a rich catalogue of educational mate-rial. To browse through these resources, students can take advantage of guided interactive courses presented in a lesson format.

The platform’s contents comprise:• Interactive views of histological slides• using a virtual microscope• Commentated videos• Online courses and laboratories• Predefined evaluation and self-assessment tests.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Physical and Rehabilitation MedicineLevent Özçakar, Martine De Muynck (eds)

English edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 286 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-420-9 - Price € 60,00

In recent years, musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) has achieved an important role not only in clinical applications (for diagnosis and management of various musculoskeletal disorders), but also in research, due to its several advantages (being convenient, inexpensive, non-invasive, repeatable, providing high-resolution dynamic and comparative imaging, and not requiring any exposure to ra-diation). As such, MSUS has increasingly become a valuable tool in the daily clinical practice of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physicians, and -where used in a rehabilitation setting- it can significantly contribute to the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm of rehabilitation patients. For these reasons, the MSUS probe can be now thought of as synonymous with the physician’s stethoscope. Additionally, scanning is quite comfortable, and sometimes even more reassuring for the patient than the physician: “seeing is believing”. In this book, aside from drawing attention to the growing issues in the agenda of PRM physicians using MSUS, the authors also discuss basic tech-nical features of the technique, and focus on the both diagnostic and interventional utility of MSUS in different health conditions involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joint lesions.

Potential readers - Physiatrists, physiotherapists.

Sonographic Atlas for Common Musculoskeletal PathologiesLevent Özçakar (ed)

English edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-576-3

The book “Sonographic Atlas for Common Musculoskeletal Pathologies” represents the second output of the same project that has produced “Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Physical and Reha-bilitation Medicine”.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is user-dependent, thus it strongly needs training with a mentor and ‘maintenance’ education. Accordingly, the main purpose of this second book is to provide plenty of examples concerning the most commonly scanned musculoskeletal pathologies, and thus to fill the gap of long-term supervised education.

The sections of the book are organized as regions in an anatomy atlas, i.e. starting from head and neck down to ankle and foot. In each section, the subsections are arranged in accordance with the anatomical structures. There are 500 images and 20 related videos, and the text is based mainly on the long figure legends, which also include clinical/physical examination findings. Importantly, while reading the book, you will see parts referred as “Expert Note” at the bottom of many pages. These comments are, for sure, the most distinguishing part of the book, because they provide valuable, practical explanations, making the readers feel as if they are revising and discussing that particular US image with an expert sitting next to them..

Potential readers - Physiatrists, physiotherapists.

Neurology BookNeurological Anatomy, Physiology and SemiologyLorenzo Pinessi, Salvatore Gentile, Innocenzo Rainero

Bilingual (parallel text): English-Italian - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 640 Richly illustrated two colours - ISBN 978-88-7051-363-9 - Price € 65.00

Neurology Book contains the basic knowledge (semiotics, neuroanatomy and neurophysiol-ogy) without which it is impossible and hazardous to attempt to learn and practice clinical neurol-ogy. Neurology is a complex discipline. After all, the brain, being enclosed in the cranium, cannot be examined directly. And yet neurologists can, through clinical examination alone, detect a cerebral or spinal lesion, identifying its site with millimetre precision. Neurological semiology is a vast discipline based on knowledge of the signs and/or symptoms of the different diseases of the nervous system. The diagnosis of a neurological disorder is a process of logical deduction based on the his-tory and neurological examination, as well as the instrumental investigations that may be necessary in order to confirm or refute the diagnostic hypothesis. The distinctive feature of this book is that it is bilingual – Italian text on the left hand page and English on the right. This allows Italian students, now used to using English, to strengthen their knowledge of language and the specific neurological terminology. Instead, for the foreign student doing a course in Italy, this book provides an account of “the Italian way to neurology” directly in the world’s most widely spoken language.

Neurology BookClinic and TherapyLorenzo Pinessi, Salvatore Gentile, Innocenzo RaineroItalian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 688 Richly illustrated two colours - ISBN 978-88-7051-488-9 - Price € 65.00

Neurology Book systematically investigates neurological diseases knowledge. Aware of the impor-tance of “signs” in neurology, the Authors emphasize the clinical aspects of diseases, correlating them, in a holistic Hippocratic vision, with anatomo-physiological, neuropathological, neuroradio-logical, neurochemical, and molecular genetic aspects.

The volume analyzes neurological pathology, clinic and therapy: the Authors’ didactic-scien-tific experience and fieldwork (hospitals, emergency rooms, surgeries) have allowed the selection of the most relevant and salient information for clinical practice, giving a very pragmatic touch to the topics dealt with. Furthermore, a wide ichnographic material supports the clarity of style, leitmotif of the entire book. It is thus possible to answer fundamental questions for a physician who is treating a neurological patient: is there a neurological disease, where is the lesion and which disease are we dealing with?

Intelligence in MotionPerception, Self-awareness, Postural ControlKatia Francesconi, Giovanni Gandini Italian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 528 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-422-3 - Price € 65,00

Human movement is not simply a product of force or the ability to resist it. It is not limited to the tension of muscles or stress on the skeleton. Rather, it is expressed firstly as a process of the brain, a personal decision, or an expression of motor intelligence, manifested through the greatest synergy, perfect equilibrium, and a functional attitude. It is fundamental to discover the mechanisms with which the nervous system, via its central and peripheral structures, learns and governs movement. The text expands upon the neurophysiological aspects that regulate movement, ex-plores the state-of-the-art, and examines the most interesting methodologies, including those in the technological realm. Then decidedly practical arguments are developed by way of proposed didactic sequences (450 illustrated exercises) aimed at specific objectives of perception, self-awareness, and postural control through a range of intermediate recommendations involving motor abilities, with the overall result of reeducating or training joint movement, stability, and strength without overlooking neuromotor and postural control. Rich examples of procedural variables are illustrated and often translatable to daily or sport-related actions.

The volume is enriched by a video section (49 videos) dedicated to experiential anatomy, useful for the proper learning of perceptual experience.

Potential readers - Motor science graduates, physiotherapists, posturologists.

Human Locomotion on Land, in Water and in AirFacts and Theories Pietro Enrico di PramperoItalian edition - Volume 21 x 29,7 cm - Paperback - Pages 224 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-476-6 - Price € 38,00

Thirty years after the first edition, appreciated all around the world and translated also into Japanese, this new edition of professor Pietro E. di Prampero largely follows its track, leaving another fundamental contribution to human locomotion science. In this second edition, besides updating and expanding on several subjects of energetics and biomechanics of human locomotion, new topics are presented: energetic cost of running in acceleration and deceleration, energetic analysis of world records in swimming and flat running, construction of a structure that allows to achieve maximum absolute velocity on human-powered vehicles, analysis of natural gait in patients affected by neurological pathologies, or after hip or knee prosthesis. Whoever is curious about the mechanisms of locomotion finds in this book the essential notions on the extremely fascinating “human machine”: after a close examination of the fundamental biochemical and thermodynamic mechanisms of muscle contraction and energetics of muscle work, according to age and sex, the book discusses human locomotion on land, in water and in air (heel-and-toe walk and running, speed skating and cycling; swimming, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, gondola and bissa; human-pow-ered flying).

Fiorenzo Conti (ed)Italian edition - Two volumes 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover Volume 1: pages 944, 631 colour illustrations - ISBN 978-88-7051-346-2 Volume 2: pages 976, 617 colour illustrations - ISBN 978-88-7051-347-9 - Price € 140,00 1st edition Spanish rights sold

The warm reception given by students, lecturers and the scientific community to the first edi-tion of Medical Physiology (2005) proved to be a major incentive to make the book even more up-to-date, complete and useful. The general structure of this second edition is exactly the same as the first, whereas important changes have been made to the content of the different sections. These changes are not restricted to updating, rebalancing of topics and improving and updating of figures: in some cases the content of the chapters has been redistributed and re-or-ganised in order to achieve greater clarity, to highlight certain topics or to add new parts; in others, new cases have been added, devoted to extremely interesting areas that have seen major ad-vances in recent years, such as brain plasticity, the physiology of emotions, the biomechanics of locomotion and aging; or to approach other topics, such as arterial circulation and the respiratory system, in a less conventional way.

PhysiologyEgidio D’Angelo, Antonio Peres (eds)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Paperback - Pages 800 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-378-3 - Price € 70,00

The aim of “Physiology”, which draws on the experience gained in a larger work, is to offer stu-dents a compact reference source for studying the mechanisms underlying the functioning of living beings, particularly in the animal kingdom, focusing particularly on the fundamental pro-cesses that constitute the molecular and cellular bases of physiological functions even seemingly remote from one another.

The topics are dealt with in the following order: molecular and cellular bases, and their relative interactions, followed by an exploration of functions and organ systems. This progression from the microscopic to the macroscopic makes it possible to deal initially with a series of elementary pro-cesses which are subsequently re-encountered in action, contributing to the realisation of complex physiological functions.

The text is enriched by the dedicated website Virtual campus where it is possible to find numer-ous detailed and specific studies in different areas: molecular biophysics, comparative physiology, applied research, pathophysiology, history of science. These digital contents – divided into Topics, Labs, Tests, Lectures, Video/Media, Professor’s Area – can be adapted as appropriate, since they also include resources of different types linked to self-assessment tests, useful for evaluating the level of preparation.

From Abyss to SpaceEnvironment and Human Limits

Guido Ferretti, Carlo CapelliItalian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover - Pages 336 - Richly illustrated ISBN 978-88-7051-312-7 - Price € 60,00

This book covers a specific chapter of integrative physiology, which is usually neglected in physiology textbooks, and which has received little attention in the past as a dedicated subject of publication. Nice deep textbooks of altitude medicine or aviation and space medicine or div-ing medicine can be found, that cover the needs of highly specialised clinicians and investigators. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the subject of human adaptation to special environments is proposed and treated in a comprehensive yet rigorous manner for the sake of a wider audience. The text acknowledges historical contributions, provides up-to-date infor-mation, describes separately basic and/or historical notions perhaps less treated than needed in classical textbooks, provides significant bibliographic material for a deeper study of the treated subjects, establishes continuous bridges between practice and physiological knowledge, and high-lights special contributions from Italian investigators and institutions.

Idiopathic scoliosis Conservative Treatment with Elastic BandsTheoretical and Practical Handbook of the Rovatti Method®

Emanuele Rovatti – Marco RovattiVolume 21 x 27 cm - Paperback - Pages 144 - Richly illustrated in full colour - Price € 28.00

In the treatment of scoliosis, the Rovatti Method® provides therapeutic rehabilitation professionals with a method, starting from the same theoretical concepts as the Lyon treatment, that encourages active participation from the patient as a subject in the personal process of re-education and self-correction. The Rovatti Method® works with professional-quality elastic bands of different densities and levels of resistance which are capable of “wrapping” and shaping the spine as if they were the hands of a therapist. In this way, the limits of physiotherapeutic or kinesitherapeutic treatments imposed on the therapist-patient relationship can be exceeded. This type of treatment thus makes it possible to treat multiple patients simultaneously. This results in a double advantage: it offers younger patients a corrective method that’s “easier” to accept, while working as a team; the second motivating factor is economic in nature, for those families who are in need of a challenging therapeutic process. In addition the theoretical and practical handbook offers an anthology of exercises (about 80, explained and il-lustrated) which are essential and characteristic of the Rovatti Method®, exploring the modes of execu-tion, principles, and corrective objectives. The exercises are organised into categories, according to their corrective goals, and offered to patients in relation to the risk of development of their scoliosis.

Potential readers - Rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists, motor science graduates.

NeuroMuscular Taping From Theory to Practice David Blow Volume 21 x 27 cm - Hardcover - Pages 384 - Richly illustrated in full colour Price € 90,00

NeuroMuscular taping (NMT) is a technique in which adhesive strips are applied over and around muscles in order to contain and support them and to prevent excessive muscle contraction. Al-though it may look like traditional bandaging, NMT is based on a different philosophy where the aim is to ensure freedom of movement so that the muscular system can heal itself bio-mechanically.

In fact, this technique, while providing support, guarantees free range of motion and thus allows the individual to carry out any kind of physical activity; at the same time it prevents fatigue and excessive muscle contraction and promotes efficient lymphatic drainage 24 hours a day.

This book sets out the theoretical basis and different methods of NMT: adopting a mainly didactic approach, it analyses, step by step, NMT of different anatomical parts through a series of very detailed and clear colour photographs.

Potential readers - Specialists in physical medicine, rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists, nurses, orthopaedic technicians, motor sciences graduates, trainers.

Functional Bandaging in Orthopedic and Sports TraumatologyClaudio ZimagliaItalian edition - Volume 21 x 27 cm - Paperback Pages 296 - Richly illustrated in colour - Price € 45,00

The functional treatment of trauma, with regard to immobilization produced by the use of plaster casts, promotes post-traumatic recovery and facilitates the practice of preventive treat-ments and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. It consists of restraint systems that use partial im-mobilisation braces or dynamic bandages capable of both protecting the injured motor structures, thereby reducing stress on the compromised area while preserving the normal functionality of the other segments, as well as eliminating the drawbacks of inactivity. The functional bandage, a dynamic restraint offering partial immobilisation capable of supporting and stabilising the various joint components, fully meets any practical needs, particularly in the sporting world. The main objec-tive of the functional bandage is the treatment of traumatic injuries with benign spontane-ous evolution: the results of muscle injuries from indirect or direct trauma, distortive capsuloliga-mentous traumatic injuries, as well as tendon damage. The work describes more than seventy different examples of the application of functional bandages with extreme clarity and effi-cacy, illustrated by over a thousand images. The description of each bandage is accompanied by a detailed indication of the musculoskeletal structure receiving treatment, a clear and concise list of materials used for each technique as well as their characteristics, specific information on their indica-tions for use, in particular in the field of prevention and rehabilitation in the sporting environment, and it is accompanied by extensive sequences of images to illustrate the individual steps used.

Potential readers: Specialists in rehabilitation medicine, orthopaedic specialists, physiothera-pists.

Scars: A System of TreatmentManual Approach Bruno Davide Bordoni, Emiliano Zanier Italian edition - Volume 17 x 24 cm - Paperback - Pages 136 - Richly illustrated in colour Price € 24,00

Scars are the result of the healing process for any wound. In a considerable percentage of cases, they may lead to pathological conditions that cause pain, functional or psychological disturbances, and aesthetic damage, sometimes to a significant degree. Starting from these considerations, the text confronts the treatment of scars from a bodily systems perspective. It is fundamental to know how to manipulate discontinuities of the skin and understand its intrinsic connections.

The book includes professional figures that use their own manual skills to try and resolve the symptoms associated, directly or indirectly, with scars. Professionals will be able to learn numerous techniques for evaluating the different developments of the skin following changes, but above all for using effective treatments.

Potential readers - Physiotherapists, manual physical therapy specialists.

Female Urinary IncontinenceDonatella Giraudo, Gianfranco LambertiItalian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 160 - Illustrated in full color ISBN 978-88-7051-303-5 - Price € 39,00

Urinary incontinence is a disorder associated not only with embarrassment and a sense of shame, but also with a general lack of information and a reluctance to seek medical help.

This book focuses on the main form of incontinence, i.e. non-neurogenic stress incontinence, a disorder frequently observed in women. It covers the main approaches to assessment and reha-bilitation, particularly clinical assessment with a view to the development of an effective rehabilita-tion programme. The book is richly illustrated and has numerous flowcharts which clarify the ap-proach. Kinesitherapy should be regarded as the most important means at the disposal of the reha-bilitation therapist. This is an approach that, in respect of the different and complex synergies be-tween organs, systems and functions, demands the use of truly global therapeutic exercise. Kine-sitherapy is supported by biofeedback techniques, particularly telemetric procedures, for the evaluation and treatment of functions in the context of daily life. Finally, the real significance of functional electrical stimulation is assessed.

Potential readers - Specialists in physical medicine, neurologists, gynecologists, physiothera-pists, nurses.

Male Urinary IncontinenceDonatella Giraudo, Gianfranco Lamberti Italian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26 cm - Paperback - Pages 160 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-456-8 - Price € 39,00

Urinary incontinence is a relevant difficulty for all who suffer from it. The physical unwellness created by the affliction is often accompanied by feelings of embarrassment, as well as by a gen-eral lack of information and a reluctance to talk about it with a doctor. In reality, it is important to change perspective: there exists no “syndrome” of incontinence, but rather a person affected by incontinence. In males, the most frequently encountered situation is incontinence following radical prostatectomy. The book, after discussing the anatomical characteristics of the male pelvic-perineal region, focuses in detail on the various phases of a person’s pre- and post-operative rehabilitation progress, beginning with evaluation methods and ending with treatment and rehabilitative exercises. Each of these topics is illustrated by a rich supply of images and flowcharts, which are indispensible for an effective and clear understanding of the method.

The text introduces varied instruments at the disposition of the rehabilitator, including biofeed-back and functional electrical stimulation.

The volume is enriched by a video section dedicated to evaluation techniques and rehabilitation exercises (20 videos).

Potential readers - Rehabilitation specialists, urologists, physiotherapists, nurses.

Sitting in a WheelchairFrom the Biomechanics of Posture to the Mechanics of the Equipment

Alberto LissoniItalian edition - Volume 19.5 x 26.5 cm - Paperback - Pages 176 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-402-5 - Price € 25,00

The life of a disabled person entails many hours sitting in a wheelchair. If one is to successfully accept this condition, it is essential that he or she can remain seated for as long and as comfortably as possible, do the things one wants to do, move without impediments, feel less tired in the after-noon, and have less pain in one’s back, shoulders, neck, etc. In this theoretical-practical manual, the Author - a physiatrist with ‘a screwdriver in hand’ who has always strived to seek out practical solu-tions - summarises his years of experience and teaching on this subject, providing thorough explana-tions for the various issues in the search for possible answers for people in wheelchairs. The text clearly and comprehensively explains the biomechanical aspects of a “normal” seated position, in light of pathological conditions, and of the mechanics of wheelchairs and their functional units and components, which are affected by problems relating to mobility and means of propulsion. The volume contains schematic iconography of great practical use for clarifying the various topics it addresses, as well as two evaluation cards to guide you in the selection of the most appropriate wheelchair for a particular patient.

Potential readers - Physiatrists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic technicians.

Orthognatodontics Giampietro Farronato • Ravindra Nanda (eds)

Coeditor: Cinzia Maspero

Coauthors: Ersilia Barbato, Claudio Chimenti, Giancarlo Cordasco, Paola Cozza, Felice Festa, Umberto Garagiola, Aldo Bruno Giannì, Rosalia Maria Leonardi, Concepción Martín Álvaro, Letizia Perillo, Giulio Rasperini, Francesco Spadari

Two volumes 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover - Pages 1222 - Richly illustrated in colour - Price € 220,00

This volume is the passionate brainchild of many hands, featuring the work of members of sev-eral notable orthodontics schools, including Milan, Chieti, L’Aquila, Madrid, Naples and Messina. The contributions from professors Ersilia Barbato, Claudio Chimenti, Giancarlo Cordasco, Paola Cozza, Felice Festa, Umberto Garagiola, Aldo Bruno Giannì, Rosalia Leonardi, Letizia Perillo, co-editor Cinzia Maspero and so many other collaborators is greatly valued.

The content of this book is based on years of experience and research on the part of profession-als from the 30-year-old Orthodontic School of Milan. Every effort is made to ensure the develop-ment of the fundamental principle on which this school is based – a concentration on a holistic approach to patient care, rather than relying on the purely mechanistic vision of most orthodontic philosophies. This volume is therefore entirely dedicated to this concept: it consists of a series of descriptive chapters focused on the global diagnosis of the different kinds of malocclusion, with detailed references to systematic relationships and to various therapeutic strategies.

The division of the chapters is meant to evaluate the evolutive progress of the orthodontic patient’s growth, investing in every step, including diagnosis, therapeutic and prognostic aspects. Particular attention is devoted to methodological innovations and the interdisciplinary aspects relating to other areas of study, in addition to dentistry.

The entire book was conceived to offer a clear delineation of the knowledge it contains, and to support the work of both those who are new to orthodontics, as well as seasoned professionals. The structured illustrative content enables users to efficiently understand the therapeutic choices available in both simple and complex clinical cases. The ultimate purpose is to provide a solid theo-retical and practical basis on which the clinician can develop the mental flexibility to face daily chal-lenges in a calm and serious manner.

Potential readers - Medical dentists, dental practitioners, orthodontists, odontostomatologists, dental technicians, dental hygienists, students of the respective degree courses and specialization.

Transverse Sagittal Maxillary Expander for the Treatment of Maxillary HypoplasiaGiampietro Farronato (ed)Italian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Paperback - Pages 144 - Richly illustrated in colour (300 images) Clinical cases - ISBN 978-88-7051-427-8 - Price € 42,00

One of the most frequently occurring skeletal deformities in the craniofacial region is hypoplasia of the superior maxillary bone in the three spatial planes. In order to allow for the balanced development of the entire stomatognathic apparatus, it is recommended that this deformity be treated as early as possible. Palate expansion has been demonstrated to be a valid and effective technique. It not only allows the reestablishment of the proper transverse dimensions of the supe-rior maxillary bone, but also corrects any dental and respiratory anomalies, guaranteeing proper execution of the multiple stomatognathic functions. The text focuses on the Transverse Sagittal Maxillary Expander (TSME), a device specifically designed for the treatment of superior max-illary hypoplasia. This piece of equipment works both sagittally and transversely, making dental al-veolar movement at the premaxilla and the upper incisors, with a consequent decrease in vertical osseous substance of the maxilla and an increase in the same on the other spatial planes. The book demonstrates the versatility of this device, describing variants that may be carried out in relation to the specific needs of an individual patient.

Potential readers - Dentists, orthodontists.

Myofunctional Therapy and OrthodonticsOcclusion, Muscles, Posture, and Therapy for Postural Rebalancing

Sabina Saccomanno, Roberto Deli (eds) Italian edition - Volume 21 x 29.7 cm - Hardcover - Pages 264 - Richly illustrated in colour ISBN 978-88-7051-401-8 - Price € 60,00

A real understanding of the patient’s problems, leading to the preparation of an effective care plan, requires an attitude centred on a comprehensive approach: on this basis, the work examines the correlations between orofacial functions, occlusion, and posture in order to better under-stand what the correct diagnostic and therapeutic approach is to address problems of various na-tures and severities. Myofunctional therapy used in the treatment of the so-called myofunctional disorders, or abnormalities of the mobility and tone of the orofacial musculature. For this reason, in addition to orthodontic treatment emphasis is given to the use of speech therapy, otolar-yngology, posturology, and osteopathy. The discussion also focuses on issues including various specific diseases or syndromes (secretory otitis media, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, Down syndrome, etc.), which are not obviously related to orthodontic problems, but which a cranio-facial specialist needs to know in order to achieve a multidisciplinary and holistic approach suitable for complex clinical problems. The work is completed by accompanying multimedia presenting the speech therapy exercises and by a clinical diary available to be given to younger patients.

Potential readers - Dentists, orthodontists, speech therapists.
