KICKING IT OFF: Arkansas State begins a three-game road trip with stops at Central Arkansas andSoutheast Missouri State this weekend. ASU faces the Sugar Bears on Friday at 4 p.m. and travelsto face the Redhawks at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game at SEMO will be webcast by Cape GirardeauTV station KFVS-12 on their website KFVS12.com

THE OPPONENTS: UCA is at 1-1 on the season with a win over Lipscomb (1-0) and a loss to SunBelt Conference opponent ULM 1-2 last Friday. Brooke Ballard and Madison Poteet lead the SugarBears with one goal each. Kelsey Gochnauer has played all 180 minutes in goal for UCA and hasmade six saves while recording a 1-0 shutout agianst Lipscomb.

SEMO stands at 1-1 with a win over Illinois State 3-2 and a 1-2 loss at Iowa. Jessie Crabtreehas two goals for SEMO including the game-winner over Illinois State while Erin Shulman and JaceyBoyko each also have goals. Ashton Aubuchon has played all minutes in goal for the Redhawksand has recorded 11 saves.

GOAL SCORERS: The Red Wolves have had four players Stasha Siers scored the winning goalagainst Mississippi State while Jessica Jingblad, Kara Nitti and Michele Clark each also scored onegoal for the Red Wolves. Jingblad and Ashley McMurtry each also have two assists on the field forA-State.

SEC WIN: With their 3-1 win over Mississippi State, the Red Wolves picked up their first win overan opponent from the SEC. Prior to the match, ASU was 0-4 against the SEC entering the game lastweek.

TOP RETURNERS: ASU returns its top four goal scorers from a year ago led by senior MicheleClark who had six goals scored last season including three game-winners. Also returning is seniorforward Kara Nitti who had five goals last season. Senior Kelsey Finders and sophomore ChristineGiles also return after leading the Red Wolves with three assists each last season Finders had twogoals scored while Giles had one.

DEFENSE: ASU also returns two of their starters along the back line in seniors Stasha Siers andLizzy Niles. The pair have been anchors on the defensive line for the past four years and are tiedfor seventh-most games started in ASU history at 57. The duo helped anchor a defense that had fourshutouts and allowed opponents to score just 27 goals all season while also setting the single-sea-son team record for goals against average at 1.37 (27 goals against).

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR: The Red Wolves welcomed seven newcomers to the squad this seasonincluding a trio of international players. Junior College transfer Aja Aguirre comes to the Red Wolvesfrom Burnaby, British Columbia and will play goalkeeper for the Red Wolves. Freshman JessicaJingblad comes to the Red Wolves from Norrkoping, Sweden and will play forward for A-State. Fresh-man defender Blaine Laing comes to the Red Wolves from Brampton, Ontario.

end the Sun Belt Conference has released itsPreseason Coaches’ Poll Wednesday whichranked Arkansas State 10th in the poll. The RedWolves received 46 points.

Denver was picked to finish first and isvying for its eighth Sun Belt championship andreceived seven of the possible 12 first placevotes for a total of 139 points. FIU tabbed sec-ond-place points with 121 and one first placevote, followed by MTSU with 115 points and twofirst place votes.

North Texas was picked fourth with 112points and one first place vote while WKU wasfifth with 95 points. Troy finished sixth in the vot-ing with 78 points and garnered the final firstplace vote.

Florida Atlantic (63), Louisiana-Lafayette(60) and UALR (51) finished above the RedWolves at 7-9 places while South Alabama andLouisiana-Monroe brought up the rear with 36and 20 points respectively.

The Preseason All-SBC team was also an-nounced with FIU’s Chelsea Levia was namedthe Preseason Player of the Year.

The Red Wolves begin regular season playon Friday at Lipscomb and return home for theirhome opener against Mississippi State on Sun-day at 2 p.m.

HEAD COACH TAFADZWA ZIYENGE:Tafadzwa Ziyenge is in his second season ashead coach at Arkansas State. Ziyenge comesto ASU after reviving both the men's andwomen's teams at University of Alabama-Huntsville. Ziyenge left the UAH women with a96-90-6 career record, advancing to the semifi-nals of the Gulf South Conference tournamenton five occasions and consistently achieving top-10 regional ranking. In his final season thewomen's team posted a 9-7-0 record and a thirdbest 4-3 conference record. The women finishedthe season ranked seventh in the south region.In his first and only season as men's head coachZiyenge directed the UAH men to the conferencefinals en route to a sixth place regional ranking.The men ended conference league play in sec-ond place. Ziyenge who is an Olympic Develop-ment Program regional coach has also coachedboth boys and girls youth teams.

“Tafadzwa is highly respected by his peerswithin his profession,” said Dr. Dean Lee, ASUDirector of Athletics. “He is very passionateabout the game and loves the game, which isvery evident. He has a great work ethic andtremendous character, integrity and knowledgeabout the game.”

Ziyenge was a four-year letterwinner(1993-96) on the UAH men's soccer team. He isfirst overall in the UAH record books for mostgoals in a career, most game winning goals in acareer. He also holds the UAH records for mostgoals in a season, most points in a season, mostgame winning goals in a season and tied formost shots on goal in a season. In addition, heis also second on the list for most points in a ca-reer, most shots on goal in a career. Ziyenge isranked third overall in goals scored, fifth in pointsand eighth in career assists. He is only one ofsix players to score 100 career points at UAH.

Ziyenge who still holds the conferencerecord for most goals scored in a season wasnamed Conference Player of the Week on threeseparate occasions in the first year the GSCsponsored soccer. He was also Most ValuablePlayer in the Mayor's Cup Classic vs AlabamaA&M in 1996. Ziyenge also set the standard fornumerous conference records. During the 1996season, Ziyenge was ranked third in the nation ingoals scored. He also led the GSC in the samecategory, as well as total points. In his senioryear, he was named to the All Region first team,GSC regular season MVP and conference finalMVP.

Ziyenge's professional soccer careerbegan in 1997 in the Eastern Indoor SoccerLeague where he played for 2 years with theHuntsville Fire. He finished the 1998 season asthe club's second leading scorer. He continuedhis professional career in the USL A-League

where he spent 2 seasons playing for TennesseeRhythm before retiring in 2001. The Marondera,Zimbabwe native holds a degree in Business Ad-ministration.

Ziyenge holds a USSF C License.
