stico e liturgico del Concilio Vaticano II. Volevamocelebrare il 50mo anniversario dellapertura delConcilio Vaticano II, manifestare il nostro impegnonellereditdellaDei Verbum.

Quando Benedetto XVI hapreso congedo dalsuo clero, il 14 febbraio scorso, in unalungacon-

Laulagremitae le reazioni degli studenti cihanno convinto unavoltadi pi: lattenzione allunitdellaScrittura, fraAn-tico e Nuovo Testamento, che caratterizzail progetto specifico del nostro Di-partimento, nellaFacoltdi Teologia.

Department of Biblical Theology. Therole of the Word in the Easter Vigil (byJean-Pierre Sonnet S.I.) To celebrate the50th anniversary of the Vatican II Council, theDepartment of Theology organized on lastMarch 21 its first Day of Study: The Bibleopens up to Easter. The lectionary of theEaster Vigil in Vatican II Council biblical,patristic and liturgical renovations. Popeemeritus Benedict XVI said that Dei Ver-bum was one of the most beautiful and in-novative documents of the Council but that

there was still much to do to reach its trueunderstanding in the spirit of the Council.

Our day of study, was hence lived as ananswer to the exhortation of Benedict XVI,the core of the day being a reading of theVigil lectionary made by eight professorsfrom our Department. After the reading,Prof. Renato De Zan from the PontificalAtheneum of St. Anselm, offered a lectureon the history of the Easter Vigil, and Prof.Michelina Tenace, Director of Departmentof Fundamental Theology, talked about TheEaster Vigil and the patristic inspirationof the Council.

The Scripture, in its dialogue with theo-logical disciplines, shows how fruitful is itsreception by the Church.

The first Day of Study or-ganized by the Depart-ment of Biblical Theology

was held on 21 March 2013under the heading The Bibleopens up to Easter. The Lec-tionary of the Easter Vigil inthe biblical, patristic and litur-

gical renovation of VaticanCouncil II. We wanted to cel-ebrate the 50th anniversary ofthe opening of the SecondVatican Council, and to showour commitment to the in-heritance of Dei Verbum.

When Pope Benedict XVItook leave from his clergy lastFebruary 14th, he gave a long

unscripted talk about his experi-ence regarding the Council. He re-marked that, as a document, theconstitution Dei Verbum was adocument that is one of the mostbeautiful and also innovative of the

whole Council, adding: There isstill much to be done to arrive at areading of Scripture that is reallyin the spirit of the Council. Herethe application of the Council is notyet complete, it has yet to be done.Our Day of Study was an answerto Pope Ratzingers appeal weknow that he will be the last Pontiffto have been a direct witness of theCouncil. However, the focus on theEaster Vigil drew us closer to Dei

Verbum at the heart of the Council:the reintroduction of the EasterVigil by Pius XII in 1951 was thefirst effect of the liturgical and bib-lical reform which resulted in thechanges of the Second VaticanCouncil. Nonetheless, the Easterpilgrimage of the Word, fromthe Creation to the Resurrection ofChrist, has become the symbol ofthe acknowledgment of the Coun-

cil and of the shift towards a morebiblical faith.

The focal point of the day wasthe reading of the Vigil lectionary,with its nine Readings and eightPsalms. Eight professors from our

Department took part in this exer-cise, which was a collective listeningto the Word. If our hermeneutics isbiblical, its Sitz im Leben was that ofthe Lectionary and Easter liturgy. In

other words, it is a question of re-lating the narrative, poetic, rheto-ric and theological brilliance ofthe texts, with their relevance inthe context of the Vigil, and par-ticularly the sequence of the bibli-cal readings. For example, whatresonance does the first divineword in Genesis 1,3 Let there belight! give rise to in the gathering

that has just witnessed the liturgyof fire under the stars, that hashailed Lumen Christi! threetimes following the paschal can-dle in the nave shrouded in ob-scurity, and has just sung theExultet: This is the night... ofwhich it is written: The night shallbe as bright as day; dazzling is thenight for me, and full of glad-ness? (Psalm 139). The theme oflight is repeated in successivereadings as in Psalm 103 whereGod is wrapped in light, as if

The packed hall and the stu-dents reaction have convinced usonce again that it is the attentiontowards the oneness of Scripture,between the Old and the New Tes-tament, that characterizes the spe-cific project of our Department, inthe Faculty of Theology.
