A gigantic medieval castle in the foothills of Italy's Dolomites mountain range is going on the market for the first time ever - and it could make for a fantastic private home or tourist attraction.

Fully-furnished Castel Valer - previously valued at more than €31million (£26million) - has 80 rooms and has been owned by the same family since the 14th century.

The new owner will enjoy more than 35,000 square feet of living space, with 15 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, five kitchens, including a medieval smoke kitchen, a banquet hall and an octagonal tower.

With 80 rooms, the castle's new owner will enjoy more than 35,000 square feet of living space - if it remains a residence.

Castel Valer, which has 15 bedrooms, has been owned by the same family since the 14th century.

The castle has several lounges, plus, five kitchens, including a medieval smoke kitchen and a banquet hall.

The castle, located in northern Italy, near its border with Austria,  could make for a fantastic private home or tourist site.

When it is auctioned without a reserve price in September, the castle will change hands for the first time in nearly 650 years.

Other features include a library, two chapels, wine cellar and a swimming pool (pictured: a private dressing room).

Castel Valer has 14 bathrooms, and has been used by its current owners for events, including weddings and concerts.

The castle is set on 18.5 acres of terraces gardens, orchards and forest in northern Italy, with three private access roads.

Over the past 20 years the castle has undergone a 'meticulous' restoration to bring it into the 21st century.

The castle has pillars dating back to the 16th century Council of Trent, and the octagonal tower was used as a World War I artillery base.

Castel Valer was originally built around 1200 with a number of additions over the following 500 years.

Concierge Auctions said the home would be ideal for someone looking for a private retreat a tourism opportunity.

Count Spaur zu Flavon und Valer, whose family is selling the castle, said he hopes the new owner adds 'to its fruitful timeline'.

There are two chapels inside the castle, which is near the village of Tassullo in the foothills of Italy's Dolomites.

Castel Valer has three access roads. Perched on a hill, it offers incredible views of the nearby village and the Dolomites.
