Architecture, designand the culture of production
Following on from the previous issue, “Percorsi in Ceramica”continues to discuss the fundamental relations between the cultureof production and the culture of the project, issues on whichCasalgrande Padana's way of working has been based right fromthe time our company, constantly committed towards constructivecomparison with the international designer sphere, wasestablished. The strong link with the world of architecture comes to the fore yetagain with the latest update about the progress of the eighth GrandPrix competition, now in its final phase of preparation. Thedeadline, 30 September 2009, closing date for presenting therelative application form, is now drawing very near. The event isarousing a lot of interest and excitement, and already numbers agreat many participants. We've received lots of requests and havemade numerous contacts. Works are already arriving… Thedialogue established between the designers and our company isbecoming more intense now the deadline draws near. Despite thefact that works created during the 2005/2009 are eligible forparticipation in the competition, the designers always endeavour totake part with their most recent creations. This means they speedup the time it takes to design, make decisions and actually erect theworks in the building sites so as to compete in the best ofconditions.Presentation of the book entitled “Casabella 1928-2008” is closelylinked to the eighth Grand Prix competition. This book waspublished by Electa to mark the celebrations for the eightiethanniversary of the prestigious journal, celebrations that alsoincluded the active contribution and involvement of CasalgrandePadana itself. To underscore the privileged relations and spirit ofcollaboration that Casalgrande Padana has established with theauthoritative international journal and that have grown strongerthroughout the years, our company has decided to reserve a copy ofthe volume to each designer who registers with the competition asa welcoming gesture. The subject of design is also discussed at various levels, withattention focused on both research and experimentation conductedwith a view to achieving constant improvements to the industrialproduct (Casalgrande Padana's porcelain stoneware slabs can beconsidered an integral part of industrial design), and in relation tothe cultural initiatives that actively involve the company in thecreation of projects, installations and proposals able to highlight allthe expressive potential and establish new ways of using ceramictiles. This issue of “Percorsi in Ceramica” closes with good news abouttwo events that happened on the same date: on 25 May, theMeeting of Confindustria Ceramica elected Franco Manfredini aschairman of the Association for the 2009-2010 biennium while onthe very same day, the Databank experts awarded CasalgrandePadana as “Company to Watch 2009” in the ceramic tile sector.

creare”.

Published for the first time in January 1928, “Casabella” has become established during
its eighty years of life, as one of the world's most long-lived, authoritative, open-minded
and dynamic journals dedicated to architecture. Much more than a simple editorial
product, “Casabella” owes its central role on the Italian, and not only the Italian
architectural scene to its ability to dialogue with different sorts of cultural events and to
reflect the transformations that have characterized the professional world, but also the
changes in tastes and the political unrest that has marked the history of contemporary
Italy.
Chiara Baglione has long-since been one of the reference points of the journal's editorial
staff and took on the task of editing the volume entitled “Casabella 1928-2008” which,
drawing from the seven-hundred and seventy-two issues amounting to some fifty-
thousand pages published, not only synthesizes their contents but particularly the spirit
and singular philosophy that have always sustained and animated the prestigious journal.
History of the publishing trade, history of the culture of architecture and history of
publication design and illustration are woven together in this important volume that
examines an ambitious intellectual project and its articulated complexity.
Divided as to editorships, the contributions are introduced by critical texts that explain the
strategies of the different editorial lines, how the art-work developed, the way the many
editorial "styles" were created.
A selection of articles in their original layouts are re-proposed in chronological sequence
so as to testify to this quality in the most evident way possible. The good thing about this
sort of presentation is that the materiality of the page becomes immediately apparent.

Casabella gennaio 1959
Casabella gennaio 1960
Casabella aprile 1961 Casabella aprile 1962 Casabella gennaio 1963 Casabella aprile 1964 Casabella agosto 1965
Thus the readers are able to understand how the journal developed through the gradual
changes in its layouts and the language used to analyze and discuss architecture.
Publication of all the covers, equally representative of the trends and cultural leanings of
the different editors, also contributes towards this sort of interpretation
All this makes “Casabella” much more than a simple editorial product which, as one reads
in the introductory pages of the book: “Owes its central role on the Italian, and not only
the Italian architectural scene to its ability to dialogue with different sorts of cultural
events and to reflect the transformations that have characterized the professional world,
but also society as a whole. In actual fact, interesting comparisons and relations could
also be established with other journals and with certain books published at different
periods, with the actions promoted by architects' associations, with events that have
influenced the national and international world of architecture.
With Casabella's history as a starting point, one could therefore tell many other tales and
create a never-ending story to which, we hope, many will wish to contribute.”
Thus, Casalgrande Padana's participation and direct involvement in the initiatives that
celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the journal “Casabella”, of which this volume
provides a testimony that invites one to reflect beyond the specificity of the event, do not
merely represent a continuation of the cultural policies adopted to date but a tangible sign
of the privileged relations that Casalgrande Padana has entertained and strengthened
with the authoritative journal and with the entire world of architecture.
True to this philosophy, Casalgrande Padana has decided to reserve a gift copy of the
volume to everyone who registers with the eighth Grand Prix competition.
The eighty years of Casabella
Initially called “La Casa bella”, the journal waspublished for the first time in January 1928 byStudio Editoriale Milanese in a monthly issueedited by Guido Marangoni, who was replacedby Arrigo Bonfiglioli in January 1930. GiuseppePagano, who had already worked for the journal, took over as editor-in-chief at the beginning of1933 and changed its name to “Casabella”.Acquisition of the journal by Editoriale Domascoincided with this change in the management. In 1935, Edoardo Persico, who unfortunately diedthe following year, assisted Pagano as jointeditor. The word “Costruzioni” was added to thename of “Casabella” in 1938, while in 1940 thewords were inverted and the journal's namebecame “Costruzioni-Casabella”.
Publication of the journal was halted by theMinistry of Popular Culture in December 1943.Two years later, publisher Gianni Mazzocchi re-organized everything and nominated FrancoAlbini and Giancarlo Palanti as editors-in-chief.Three issues of “Costruzioni” were published in1946, including the triple monographic issuededicated to Giuseppe Pagano (N° 195/198).Publication was discontinued again from 1947until 1953. Edited by Ernesto Nathan Rogers,“Casabella-Continuità” was issued in January1954 with an almost two-monthly frequency.Rogers remained as the journal's editor-in-chiefuntil January 1965 and publication resumed itsmonthly frequency from January 1959.Gian Antonio Bernasconi took over as thejournal's editor-in-chief from August 1965 untilMay 1970 and the publication became known as
“Casabella” again. Alessandro Mendini waseditor-in-chief from the middle of 1970 untilMarch 1976, only to be replaced by Bruno Alfierifrom April to December of that same year.Editoriale Domus gave up the journal in 1971 andfrom January 1977 onwards, it was published byGruppo Editoriale Electa, while TomàsMaldonado became its editor-in-chief untilDecember 1981.This position was held by Vittorio Gregotti fromMarch 1982 until February 1996. Meanwhile,Gruppo Editoriale Electa was taken over by theMondadori publishing firm.Francesco Dal Co has been the editor-in-chief of“Casabella” since March 1996 and the journalhas been published by Arnaldo MondadoriEditore since April 2002.

Casabella. Une revue, beaucoup d'histoires
Casabella marzo 1976 Casabella febbraio 1977 Casabella marzo 1979 Casabella giugno 1981 Casabella marzo 1982

suggeriscono interpretazioni spaziali, proposte espressive, visioni sensoriali, atmosfere,

Design is a matter of excellence on the Italian scene and is certainly is for Casalgrande
Padana, which has always considered the tile as the result of a complex process
of industrial synthesis able to combine manufacturing know-how and skills with a flair
for style.
These factors play a strategic role when it comes to product development, especially
in relation to market demands that are becoming increasingly more exacting and
strongly directed towards enhancing buildings (and not just of the residential type).
Customers want comfortable surroundings, flexible use, customized compositions

as well as products that are easy to clean, practical to service, hygienic, reliable
and safe.
But the end users are also acquiring growing awareness about issues like sustainable
development and are therefore becoming more interested in planning solutions that are
able to achieve it.
Casalgrande Padana's new generation eco-materials are able to interpret these new
requirements in a comprehensive and differentiated way thanks to an innovative
proposal whereby the attention is no longer solely directed towards the product but on
the project, with the accent on modularity, flexibility, customizing and biocompatibility.
While it includes a wide and varied range of products, formats and colors, the offer is
no longer limited to the single tile or series.
The proposal extends to fixing layouts and solutions for overall compositions able to
blend in with other collections or to be used with other materials and finishing elements
so as to achieve interesting patterns, original textural matches or unusual chromatic
effects. Rather than products or series, Casalgrande Padana offers true “design
concepts” suggesting spatial interpretations, expressive proposals, sensorial visions,
atmospheres, inspirations, life-styles, dreams…
Thus porcelain stoneware slabs become architectural surfaces that delimit space and
define different ways of living within it.
Casalgrande Padana's research and experimentation work in the sphere of design has
often been conducted in collaboration with other enterprises and organizations.
Thus, on-going commitment alongside important partners towards prestigious cultural
events and initiatives by means of conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and

and deals with the theme of garden space by analyzing the various activities that take
place in this natural environment - walking, observing, dallying, relaxing, being

ceramic materials. The project is based on a single type of composition - an oval slab
made of 60x120 cm porcelain stoneware tiles from the Marte series of the Granitogres
line - which become paving on a level with the grass, then part of a bench and even a
service table top. The same textural surface, the same shape and the same color delimit
space, define functions and accompany actions. Positioned at different levels, the tiles
become functional surfaces for different uses, all of which interpret the needs of the
garden environment: “the space of one's personal intimacy, halfway between the
vastness of unconscious nature and one's home; an extremely special intermediate
place linking that which does not change with that which does, rigidly static things with
those that move: it's the vase into which the most different and opposite elements flow

porcellanato Casalgrande Padana.
Mentre i pannelli
Maurizio Duranti faces the subject of contemporary living with these simulated domestic
interiors proposed as precious stimuli and useful indications for the future. Set up as part of
the “Interior Architecture” event at the Fiera di Verona exhibition center, the installation is
like a workshop that interprets trends in a personal way, thanks to the contribution of
important enterprises actively committed to research and experimenting with pioneering
uses of materials and cladding.
Besides expressing the stylish-formal and technical-performance aspects of the project, the
ceramic products used for the interior flooring and exterior cladding testify to the certified
high quality of Casalgrande Padana's porcelain stoneware and its extremely versatile uses.

exterior shell with their relief texture are obtained by fixing a 4 mm ceramic slab over a tile
of normal thickness. Proposed in five different patterns which can be freely mixed and
matched together, these components emphasize the dynamic appearance of the
installation and accentuate the symbolic shape of the cladding.
superposition d'une dalle céramique de 4 mm sur un carreau d'une épaisseur ordinaire;

know how industriale di Casalgrande Padana in grado di selezionare, calibrare e

solution de continuité.

leganti, senza qualsiasi altra cosa sola a sé.
Presented at the Triennale di Milano for the “sit_down_please” event, Doppiacoppia is
an outdoor seat of new conception and was designed by Riccardo Blumer in
collaboration with Casalgrande Padana. Entirely made from modular porcelain
stoneware tiles in the 10x10 cm format, the theme interpreted by this armchair is the
versatility of the ceramic material. This is done by defining an everyday object which,
although it appears to be uncompromisingly monolithic in its formal, overall
appearance, is actually extremely fragmentary and permeable in its structure.
Speaking of this, Blumer says: “I liked the idea of working with tiles as absolute
element, not as a support, not decorative, without adhesive, without anything to bond
them together and with nothing else at all, just tiles. To do this, we cut them so as to
create slots that allowed them to be assembled in squared rows, as though they were
part of a mechanical assembly game. A game that can vary in size, depending on the
number of pieces used and the time you want to play. In this case, we had to surrender
to the load limits of the Triennale venue.”
In actual fact, the armchair's compact and geometrically rigid volume stems from a
multitude of small orderly loose-laid ceramic components which, thanks to the high
mechanical performance of porcelain stoneware, allowed a flexible construction to be
created in the modular mode.

man spielen will, in der Größe ändern.

A real landslide, which is proof of the deepappreciation for Manfredini as a man, and notjust as a businessman. The Casalgrande Padana president's track recordin the industry's associations is an impressiveone indeed. Franco Manfredini joined theexecutive committee of Assopiastrelle for thefirst time in May 1986, and over the years hechaired several of the association's advisorycommittees, including the “TechnicalRegulations”, “ School and University Educationand Training”, “ Safety and Environment”Committees, and he was also a member of the"Statistics and Publishing Activities" Committee. The chair of Confindustria Ceramica is certainlyan important appointment, but it also requiresdeep commitment and a heavy burden ofresponsibilities, especially considering thecurrent negative economic conditions.Today's crisis is surely the worst crisis thisindustry had to go through, a fact that Manfrediniknows very well.Nonetheless, his opening speech as a Chairmanwas full of confidence and hope:“It is true that our ceramics district has notgrown in the last years, but this stop was due tothe real estate crisis in our top two exportmarkets (USA and Germany); and now we aresuffering the effects of this global crisis whoseroots are in finance.I don't think the sector is declining, because thecrisis depends neither on the product nor on thecompanies: We still have the strong innovationdrive, the legacy from our past history. Our district has produced, over the years, severalvery complex and structured skills which arecomplimentary one to each other and led to thedevelopment of a true leadership in innovation ofthe ceramics industry. And companies keep oninvesting in research. We keep looking forwardto the future”.Keep up the good work, Chairman.
