    PREFACE

    Bologna acquired a thriving

    musical

    life in

    the

    course

    of

    the

    seventeenth

    century,

    generating

    momentum

    which

    would

    subsequently

    have

    an

    impact

    throughout

    Italy.

    The

    city

    especially

    fostered instrumental

    music, most

    notably

    for

    the

    violin. The two

    main musical

    centres

    in Bologna,

    the

    Basilica San

    Petronio

    and

    the

    Accademia dei

    Filarmonici,

    attracted

    outstanding

    musicians:

    M.

    Cazzati,

    G.

    P.

    Colonna,

    G.

    B. Bassani, P. and G.

    B.

    degli

    Antoni, D. Gabrielli,

    A.

    Corelli,

    G.

    Torelli, and

    Giovanni

    Battista

    Vitali, who

    ranls

    as

    the

    founder of

    the

    Bolognese School.

    Vitali,

    born

    in Bologna

    in

    1632,

    probably

    studied

    composition

wth Cazzati, the director of the

    Capella

    di

    San Petronio.

    In 1658

    he

    found

    employment

    as

    a singer and

    player

    of the

    'violoncino".

    From

    1666

    onwards

    he was

    listed

    as

    a

    member

    of

    the Accademia

    Filarmonica,

    and

    in 1673 he held

    the

    position

    of rnaestro

    di

    cappelk at

    San

    Rosario. From

    1674

    untll

    his

    death

    n

    1692

    he was

    in

    the employ of the

    Duke

    of

    Modena, first

    as

    Deputy Court

    Musical

    Director,

    in

    the

    years

    1684-85

    as

    Director.

    Vitali's

    wide-ranging

    musical output comprises twelve

    collections

    of

    violin compositions with

    continuo

    (most

    of them trio

    sonatas)

    published

    between

    1666

    andl692,and

    the

    unpublished

    ,,Panite

    sopra

    diverse

    Sonate

    per

    il

    Violone" and

    "per

    il Violino

    '.

    In

    the

    vocal

    genres,

    Viali

    is

    known to

    have

    written four

    oratorios and ten cantaas

    and

    to

    have

    published

    an

    anthology ofPsalm

    setdngs

    and

    anotler

    ofhymns.

    Vitali's

    impact

    on

    his

    contemporaries

    is

    attributable

    to

    his

    stylistically

    diverse

    compositions

    for violin.

    They

    are collections

    of

    dance

    movements

    -

    some

    actually

    designated

    "per

    ballare"

    -

    and'Sonate",

    these

    latter

    evincing

    a

    more

    elaborate

    style.

    Vitalis violin compositi-

    ons

    significantly

    helped

    the

    genres

    of

    the'Sonata

    da camera"

    and

    more particularly

    the

    'sonata

    da chiesa" to become

    established.

    He

    also owed his fame in

    part

    to

    his

    "Anifici

    musicali"

    opus

    13,

    in

    which

    he

    employed the strict contrapuntal

    style.

    The

    'Partite"

    for

    'violone'

    (violoncello)t)

    and

    'violino'without

    accompaniment

    which

    here appear in print

    for

    the

    first

    time

    are

    untypical

    of the violin

    music

    of the day').

    Given

    their

    high

    quality,

    the

    question

    of whether they

    were

    written

    for practice

    or

    performance

    purposes appears secondary..

    The

    term

    "violone'

    is

    ambiguous,

    its meaning varying according

    to

    time and

    place. In

    and around

    Bologna

    in

    the second

    half

    of

    the

    seventeenth

    cennrry it

    tended

    to denote

    bass

    instruments

    of

    various

    sizes and

    tuning

    belonging to the

    violin

    family. The

    traditional,

    large

    'violone"

    had its lowest

    string tuned

    to

    C

    or

    B

    flat1,

    but

    the contemporary

    equivalent

    of

    the

    modem-day

    cello

    with

    its

    some-

    what

    smaller dimensions

    was also

    referred

    to

    as

    *violone"

    (or

    alternatively as

    'violoncino").

    It

    is

    thus

    permissible

    -

    and

    feasible

    -

    to play

    the

    pieces headed

    'per

    il

    Violone"

    on a

    cello.

    Vitali's "Partite..."

    generally

    take

    the

    form

    of

    sets

    of

    (dance)

variations built up on a bass patternr).

    The

    "Passo

    e

    mezzo"

    (Passamezzo)

    pieces

    are elaborate diminution treatments

    of

    a

    stringently structured, subtly varied pattern

    in

    31

    barsn).

    "Per

    b

    quadro'

    appended to the

    title

    denotes the

    relevant

    passamezzo

    pattern in

    the

    major

    keys).

    In

    the

    first

    "Capritio",

    "otto

    figure"

    signifies the thematic

    opening

    eight

    notes, while "cinque

    temp"

    alludes to'an

    ancient dance

    figure. In the third

    'Capritio",

    the

    proportional

    numbers

    (derived

    from

    mensural

    notation)

    evidently

    pply to

    changes

    in

    the

    grouping of

    the

    notes

    resulting

    from the

    equalisation of the

    quavers

    throughout

    (proportions

    in

    the strict

    sense

    of the term

    would not provide

    a

    musically satisfactory

    solution).

    The

    upper number

    in

    each

    case

    distinguishes

    the

    grouping

    of the

    following notes from

    that of the

    previous

    notes

    (whose

    grouping is indicated

    by

    the

    lower

    number).

    The

    changes

    in

    the accentuation of the

    individual

    sections

    as

    denoted

    in

    this way also

    relate

    to

    the

    melodic-harmonic integration

    of

    the

    pattern

    as a

    whole.u)

    pieces

    of

    the manuscript

    are headed

    appropriately:

    One curious

    feature

    of

    the

    headings

    above the

    dance

    pieces is

    the

    formulation

    oper

    manner

    of

    seventeenth-century
