Scrivere del lavoro di un architetto che oggi vive e lavora in Italia non è facile perché viene naturale soffermarsi sull’assurda mancanza di fiducia nell’architettura in cui oggi siamo – tutti – costretti a operare nel nostro paese. Se poi si lavora in una città difficile come Napoli altre e più estreme tentazioni si affacciano. Così facendo faremmo grande torto al lavoro che Tommaso Vecci fa da quasi un decennio e dal quale, ogni volta che ho il piacere di poterne vedere foto o meglio la realizzazione, ricevo immancabilmente un senso di pace ed equilibrio, rigore ed eleganza, misura e raffinata, antica – e perciò contemporanea – bellezza. In una parola sento quel benessere che si prova di fronte a un’opera d’ingegno umano capace di costruire quei luoghi interiori pensati e realizzati per aiutare ad abitare poeticamente il mondo. Opere che noi umani chiamiamo architetture; meglio: Architetture. Non è l’età che fa un architetto (detesto sentir parlare di “giovani architetti”), non è una laurea che mi fa riconoscere un collega (gli architetti sono un’assoluta minoranza rispetto ai laureati in architettura). To write about the work of an architect who works and lives in Italy today is anything but easy, because it comes natural to dwell on the great distrust towards architecture which we are now– all of us – forced to deal with in our country. And if one works in a difficult city as Naples, one is faced with other and more extreme temptations. But by doing so, we would commit a great injustice to the work Tommaso Vecci has been doing for almost ten years, and which, every time I have the pleasure to see images of his works or – even better – the actual constructions, I never fail to get a feeling of peace and equilibrium, rigour and elegance, measure and refinement, and of ancient – and therefore contemporary – beauty. In a word, I experience the wellbeing one feels before a work of human genius capable of building those interior places conceived and realized to help us live poetically in the world. Works we human beings call architecture; or, rather: Architectures. It is not age that makes an architect (I hate to hear speak of “young architects”); a degree does not suffice for me to recognize a colleague (there are far fewer architects than architecture graduates). Ubicato nell’area nord di Napoli, l’intervento ha interessato la sistemazione esterna del giardino e la realizzazione degli interni di un appartamento al piano terra di un edificio residenziale di tre livelli. Il lotto su cui sorge la casa è di forma regolare, chiusa su due lati da alti alberi e aperta sul fondo dove è collocato l’accesso principale. Il giardino diviene un recinto a cielo aperto dove si collocano le nuove funzioni: l’area per il ricovero delle auto, l’area a verde e l’area per lo “stare” cercano di trovare una propria unità all’interno di questo recinto. Il vuoto diventa spazio di relazione tra le cose e interviene nel progetto come elemento unificatore degli spazi progettati; piccoli luoghi e ambiti che accolgono la vita domestica di una famiglia tradizionale.La volontà da parte dei committenti di realizzare un garage, diventa l’occasione di strutturare lo spazio architettonico privilegiando questa funzione che si caratterizza come una “stanza all’aperto” senza barriere né finestre, che apre squarci sulla natura artificiale. The project, which is located in the northern area of Naples, has consisted of the landscaping of the garden and the planning and decoration of the interiors of an apartment on the ground floor of a residential building with three floors.The outdoor plot of the property is regular in shape, closed on two sides by tall trees and open towards the bottom, where the main entrance is located. The garden becomes a fenced-in area, where the new functions as car port, green areas and patio seek a harmony within the enclosed area. The void becomes a space where the different objects may relate and participate in the whole as unifying element of the designed spaces; small places and environments where the domestic life of a traditional family may unfold. The client’s desire to build a garage has become an opportunity to organize the architectural space, privileging this function which may defined as an “open-air room” without either barriers or windows, from which the artificial nature may be glimpsed. This small, covered yet open place allows one to perceive the presence of the garden, and

THE RESTORATION HAS RECONSTRUCTED, THROUGH INVESTIGATIONS OF THE LAYERS, THE ORIGINAL SURFACE TREATMENTS OF THE FACADES AND ALL THE DECORATIVE DETAILS.

Il vuoto assolve una duplice funzione: quella di far trapelare la luce naturale negli ambienti interni e di fissare il limite sopra il quale è posizionata l’illuminazione artificiale. L’interno infine è caratterizzato dalla presenza di un “muro-funzione”, unico e continuo, che diviene limite o contenitore al servizio delle varie attività. La dominante monocromatica degli elementi lignei è data dall’utilizzo di un’unica essenza di legno, l’okumè. La progettazione estesa a tutti gli ambienti e a tutte le opere di falegnameria ha seguito l’andamento dei lavori durati circa due anni.

The empty space above serves two purposes; it lets daylight into the interior, and fixes the limit above which the artificial lighting is installed. The interior is characterized by the presence of a unique and constant “wall-function” that becomes limit or container and that caters to the needs of the different activities. The dominant monochrome of the elements is wood is assured by the use of a single wood type, okumè. The project has involved all parts of the interior and carpentry work, and has lasted about two years.

IL LIMITE UMANIZZA GLI SPAZI. TUTTI GLI ARREDI STRUTTURANTI LO SPAZIO INTERNO DEFINISCONO AMBITI E PERCORSI CHE CONDUCONO ALLE VARIE ATTIVITÀ DELLA CASA.THE INTERIOR AS TAILOR-MADE GARMENT; THE ARCHITECT HAS ENVISIONED A SPACE WHERE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE IN EVERYTHING AT A GLANCE, WHICH MUST BE EXPLORED BEFORE IT MANIFESTS ITSELF. THE LIMITS MAKE THE SPACES MORE HUMAN. ALL THE FURNITURE USED TO STRUCTURE THE INTERIOR DEFINES THE ROOMS AND THE PASSAGES LEADING TO THE DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES IN THE HOME.

Vecciarchitetti è uno studio di architettura, fondato nel 2003 da Tommaso Vecci (1975) con sede a Napoli e, dal 2011, a Milano. Lo studio opera nei settori della progettazione architettonica e urbana alle varie scale, del recupero, dell’allestimento e del progetto d’interni unendo le esperienze professionali e progettuali sviluppate tra Italia, Spagna e Inghilterra. Dal 2008 è partner dello studio Giuseppe Di Costanzo (1979). Lo studio è un laboratorio flessibile e aperto dove convergono esperienze professionali diverse e variabili con l’impegno di coniugare professione e sperimentazione. Alla ricerca progettuale è accostata la costante collaborazione alla didattica nei corsi di Progettazione Architettonica di Napoli e Salerno. L’attività professionale è da sempre affiancata alla ricerca attraverso la partecipazione a concorsi nazionali e internazionali per i quali, nel corso degli anni, lo studio ha ricevuto diversi premi e riconoscimenti, tra i quali nel 2011 la menzione per il museo Santiago Ydañez (Spagna), nel 2008 il primo premio al concorso di idee BAM – borghi alti di mare presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno, nel 2006 il terzo premio per il polo scolastico per l’infanzia a Noventa Padovana, nel 2004 la menzione per la

The Vecciarchitetti architecture firm was founded in 2003 by Tommaso Vecci (1975) with head office in Naples; the Milan office was opened in 2011. It specializes in architectural design and town planning on different scales, in renovation, exhibition design and interior decoration, uniting professional experiences and design activities developed in Italy, Spain and England. Giuseppe Di Costanzo (1979) became partner in the firm in 2008. The firm is a flexible and open workshop where different professional skills may converge in order to combine expertise and experimentation. The professional activity is combined with an academic career, in the form of teaching at the courses of architectural design in Naples and Salerno. Architectural planning has always been conducted parallel with research, through participation in national and international competitions, which have over the years resulted in various prizes and recognitions, including the mention for the Museum of Santiago Ydañez (Spagna) in 2011, the first prize in the idea competition for the BAM – villages above the sea at the Faculty of Architecture of Ascoli Piceno in 2008, the third prize for the children’s school complex at Noventa Padovana in 2006, the mention for the renovation
