Definizione

Con il termine Additive Manufacturing (AM) si identificano una serie di tecniche che,partendo direttamente da modelli digitali 3D, consentono, con diversi materiali, attraverso unprocesso additivo, strato dopo strato, di realizzare oggetti fisici.

Fino a qualche anno fa la creazione di oggetti fisici mediante stampanti 3D richiedeva l’utilizzodi sistemi molto costosi ed investimenti per attrezzare specifici laboratori ed acquistaresofisticati software. Questo ha posto dei limiti alla diffusione di tali sistemi che potevanoessere utilizzati solo in grandi aziende o in Centri di ricerca.

MakerBot Industries è una società fondata nel gennaio 2009 da Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer, e Zach“Hoeken” Smith che produce una stampante 3D open source a prototipazione rapida chiamataCupcake CNC. La Cupcake incorpora le idee del progetto RepRap con l'obiettivo di portare lastampa 3D nelle case: prezzo 2-3 k$.

Nel 2013 la società di Bre Pettis è stata acquistata da Stratasys per 607 milioni di dollari.

Printrbot - Crowdfounding

Tra i vari progetti disponibili su Internet per realizzare una stampante 3D, è di particolareinteresse quello di Brook Drumm denominato Printrbot.

La particolarità del progetto non sta tanto nel design della stampante, mantenuto volutamentesemplice per essere economico (circa 500$) e alla portata di tutti, quanto nella scelta di utilizzare ilsito KickStarter per finanziarlo.L’incredibile popolarità raggiunta da questa stampante 3D ha fatto sì che, con un iniziale obiettivo di25.000$, al termine della raccolta il totale dei fondi sia stato di 830.827$: una importantedimostrazione di come Internet possa aiutare chi ha buone idee a metterle in pratica.

Le stampanti DLP (Digital Light Processing) e LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) sono molto più veloci rispetto ai sistemi FDM(e SLA basate su laser) perchè consentono di stampare in pochi secondi l’intero strato.
