Beautiful Venice For many people Venice is one of the most extra-ordinary cities on earth: the waterfront, the Canale Grande, the laguna, the beautiful palazzos. And the wooden pillars connected by iron chains, leaning against each other, standing in the sun sparkling over the water.

How Travelling Memory beganThe wooden pillars resting on one another were my inspiration for the Travelling Memory sculptures. They began as drawings, which were then transpo-sed into marble models. After making the models, I went to Pietrasanta and made marble sculptures measuring 2 to 2.5 meters in height. I have come a long way from the experience of seeing and being inspired by the pillars in Venice, my starting point, to arriving at the realization of the Travelling Memory project. My motivation for making the project is to keep alive the memory of the violence, such as the Shoah, perpetrated in our times.

Travelling Memory in VeniceMy idea for Venice is to place the seven 6- to 8-me-ter-high white polyester sculptures on seven woo-den pillars. At night the sculptures will be lit from

within by bulbs powered by rechargeable batteries. It is envisaged as an exhibition in the water. An exhibition in the waters of the laguna and the Canale Grande would be seen from distance as a lighted stage set. On the water between the sculp-tures or at a distance, they would be seen as monu-mental art arising from the water. The sculptures will have returned to their origins. The water exhibition would be opened simulta-neously with the one-hour-long Travelling Memory performance in a museum or another place suitable for hosting the sculptures, rails with 4-meter-high bamboo poles and mirrors, the musicians, film, and the audience.

Participating artistsThe chamber music for string trio for Travelling Memory was composed by György Kurtág. The se-ven marble sculptures are by Ans Hey. The video recording of the ballet choreographed by Rudi van Dantzig was produced by Jozef Hey and Jurgen Me-ekel. Performances of Travelling Memory have been presented in Paris, at the Dôme des Invalides; in the Luberon in southern France; and in several places in the Netherlands. Ans Hey, sculptor, Amsterdam
