Emanuele Repetti, socio ordinario dell’Accademia dei Georgofili, scriveva nel 1833, nel suo Dizionario Fisico Storico della Toscana, che tra le località presso Firenze con uno stesso nome vi è “ la villa a Doccia presso Sesto, la più nota di tutte per la grandiosa manifattura delle porcellane del marchese Ginori”.E più avanti: “la Toscana che ha credito di essere stata una delle prime nazioni a fabbricare e dipingere vaghe e nobili stoviglie, note sotto il vocabolario di Vasi Etruschi; la Toscana che fornì alle belle arti mercé due orafi e scultori fiorentini (Luca della Robbia, e Benvenuto Cellini) le prime opere di terra invetriata, e i primi smalti fissati sulle piastre di oro; la Toscana vide anche per le cure di un illustre fiorentino, stabilire presso la capitale la prima manifattura di porcellane che sia sorta e abbia prosperato in Italia”.La prima dunque e unica, per continuità e fedeltà, nel ricercare, insieme, il bello dell’utile e il meraviglioso. Quella della ‘fabbrica dell’oro bianco’ è la storia d’una idea e di un’impresa antiche che hanno mantenuto per quasi duecentosettantacinque anni un ruolo di assoluta preminenza, seguendo nei cambiamenti di epoche e stili come nello sviluppo delle tecniche, la via maestra dell’eccellenza artistico-creativa. La “fabbrica dell’oro bianco” nasce nel 1735, nel granducato di Toscana, presso Firenze, dalla grande mente imprenditoriale del marchese Carlo Andrea Ginori. Quando l’aristocratico fiorentino, avvia a Doccia nella villa della tenuta di famiglia, quella che poi diventa una delle più famose manifatture della porcellana artistica, la febbre dell’oro bianco, aveva appena contagiato l’Europa. La messa a punto è difficile ma poi la manifattura decolla. Se nel 1747, nella fabbrica di Doccia sono in funzione 2 fornaci, una per la maiolica, l’altra per la porcellana, nel 1774 i dipendenti diventano circa un centinaio. Nel 1838 le fornaci sono 5, tre per le maioliche e le stufe e 2 per le porcellane e i dipendenti quasi 200. Nel 1889 le fornaci sono diventate 15 con circa 1200 dipendenti. La guida illuminata della famiglia Ginori prosegue fino al 1896 anno in cui avviene la fusione con l’industria ceramista milanese Augusto Richard, che già possiede molte fabbriche al nord. COLAGGIO / La produzione artistica Richard Ginori 1735conoscendo perfettamente i comportamenti della porcellana in cottura, si caratterizza per il colaggio della porcellana liquida, una miscela di feldspato, caolino e quarzo, nelle diverse parti in cui è stata separata la forma originale, che si tratti di una figura piccola ed elementare o di un gruppo complesso e articolato.

POURING / With its perfect knowledge of how fired porcelain behaves, artistic production of Richard Ginori 1735 begins with the pouring of the liquid porcelain, a blend of feldspar, kaolin and quartz, into the various different parts into which the original mould has been separated, whether it is a simple, small figure or a complex, articulated group.

GUARNITURA / Tutte le parti colate vengono poi montate, in crudo umido, assieme e unite attraverso l’uso della barbottina che funziona da collante. La barbottina viene spalmata con una spatola sul componente da unire, mentre un pennello morbido e bagnato serve a rimuoverne le quantità in eccesso.

FITTING / All the poured parts are then assembled, while they are green and damp, and joined together using barbotine which acts as cement. The barbotine is applied with a spatula onto the component to be joined, and a soft, wet brush is used to remove excess quantities.

NUDI E CRUDI / Dopo un periodo di tempo variabile a seconda dello spessore desiderato la forma viene capovolta per eliminare il liquido in eccesso. Dopo un ulteriore periodo di attesa si apre la forma e se ne estrae il pezzo crudo.

GREEN AND CLEAN / After a period of time that varies according to the thickness desired, the mould is overturned to drain off the excess liquid. After a further waiting period the mould is opened and the ‘green’ or unfired piece is extracted.

laboratori: se da un lato si realizzano i modelli “classici” della produzione docciana, nascono i nuovi esemplari che risentono delle tendenze dell’Art Nouveau. Quando l’architetto Gio Ponti assume la direzione artistica, il suo programma di rinnovamento lascia un segno indelebile e significativo. L’espansione è intensa e continua tanto che nel 1930 la superficie edificata raggiunge 80.000 mq, con 40 forni e 2000 dipendenti.Dopo l’ultima guerra mondiale si decide la costruzione di una nuova Manifattura più ..“vicino alla strada”.. edificata con criteri razionali e moderni a Sesto Fiorentino, dove nel 1958 verrà traslocato da Doccia lo storico stabilimento. E qualche anno più tardi anche il Museo.

In 1883 Emanuele Repetti, full member of the Accademia dei Georgofili, wrote in his Dizionario Fisico Storico della Toscana (The Historical and Physical Dictionary of Tuscany) that of the many places in Florence named Villa Doccia, ‘the Villa Doccia in Sesto, was the most famous for its magnificent manufacture of Marquis Ginori’s porcelain.’He continued: ‘Tuscany is credited with being one of the first nations to create and paint elegant prized crockery, known as Etruscan Vases; Tuscany gave the fine arts world its first glazed earthenware pieces and the first enamels to be applied to gold plating, thanks to two Florentine goldsmiths and sculptors (Luca della Robbia and Benvenuto Cellini); and Tuscany saw the establishment in its capital city of the first porcelain factory to grow and prosper in Italy, with an illustrious Florentine at the helm.”Its long history and commitment make it the first and only factory to combine the beauty of fine art with the beauty of everyday objects. COTTURA / Dopo circa 7-10 giorni di essiccamento, la forma è pronta per andare in cottura. La cottura sarà unica a 1400° se vogliamo ottenere un pezzo in biscuit; saranno invece necessarie due cotture (1000° e 1400°) e un processo di invetriatura per ottenere la porcellana pura.

FIRING / After around 7-10 days of drying, the mould is ready to be fired. Single firing at 1400° produces a piece in biscuit porcelain; to obtain pure porcelain, two firings are necessary (1000° and 1400°) as well as a glazing process.

The ‘white gold factory’ was founded in 1735 in Florence, in the grand duchy of Tuscany, by the great thinker and entrepreneur Marquis Carlo Andrea Ginori. When the Florentine aristocrat created the factory that was to become one of the most famous makers of artistic porcelain in the villa on the family estate in Doccia, ‘white gold fever’ had just begun to spread across Europe. The early days were difficult, but production soon accelerated. In 1747, there were just two kilns in the Doccia factory, one for majolica and one for porcelain. By 1774 the number of employees had risen to one hundred, and by 1838 there were five kilns, three for majolicas and stoves and two for porcelain, and there were almost 200 employees. By 1889 there were fifteen kilns and 1,200 employees. The Ginori family’s success continued to 1896, when the company merged with Milanese ceramics manufacturer Augusto Richard, which already owned many factories in the north of Italy. And so Richard-Ginori was established. Many mechanical innovations were introduced in the workshops during this period, with new Art Nouveau-influenced pieces now being made alongside “classic” models of Doccia production. When architect Gio Ponti took over as art director, he revitalised production, leaving a profound and lasting mark. Growth was intense: so much so that by 1930 the factory covered over 80,000 square metres, with 40 kilns and 2,000 employees.After the Second World War it was decided to build a new factory “closer to the road.” It was to be constructed according to logical, modern criteria at Sesto Fiorentino, and the historic factory was moved from Doccia to here in 1958. A few years later, the Museum was moved as well.

Collection of large plastic figures made of biscuit porcelain, loosely based on Hellenistic moulds of the Medicean collections. This type of work has a crafting tradition dating back to 1735, the year the Factory was founded, and since then has been testimony to the mastery and excellence that Richard-Ginori artisans have handed down over the centuries. The Mythology series is a set of objets d’art that have been exquisitely designed and fashioned by hand.

In this elegant series of candelabras depicting the four seasons, the decorative subject is an integral part of the object. The candelabras are based on original moulds from the first period of the Doccia Factory’s production, the documentation relating to which is preserved in the historical archives of Richard-Ginori 1735. The extraordinary lifelike quality of the natural elements and moulded design in these superb works of art remain unparalleled.

GLI ACQUAIOLIDi queste due figurette non esistono esemplari antichi. È una produzione novecentesca, che ha trovato ispirazione nel gusto arcadico pastorale della serie con contadini o nelle scene campestri prodotte fin dal tardo Settecento alla Manifattura di Doccia. La prima testimonianza presente nell’archivio del Museo Richard Ginori risale al luglio del 1939. Il tema della coppia suggerisce d’altronde un gusto a noi vicino poiché lo troviamo raramente nel tardo Settecento e solo in alcuni gruppetti a tema galante. Detto questo la maestria del disegno e la freschezza del movimento sono deliziose.

No antique examples of these two figurines exist. It is a twentieth century production, inspired by the pastoral Arcadian taste of the series with peasants or in the rustic scenes made from the late eighteenth century onwards at the Doccia factory. The earliest record in the archives of the Richard Ginori Museum is from July 1939. However, the couple as subject suggests tastes similar to those of the present day, since this subject is rarely found in the late eighteenth century and only in some amorous groups. Even so, the mastery of design and the freshness of movement are delightful.

Il tema del ‘putto’ è sempre stato presente nella produzione di tutte le manifatture storiche europee. Il suo impiego fin dal Settecento ha coinvolto vari settori delle arti applicate. La sua funzione era di decoro. Nel caso della Manifattura di Doccia troviamo fin dal Settecento, ad esempio, singoli puttini montati su piedistalli per decorare le tavole o ancora puttini seduti anche con funzione di reggi stemma, impiegati come pomelli per i coperchi delle zuppiere. La serie dei nostri puttini è da ricondurre a un periodo più tardo. Lo suggerisce, ad esempio, il supporto sul quale sono seduti che rievoca vagamente gli elementi fogliacei presenti nello stile rococò, ma maggiormente stilizzati. Presso l’Archivio del Museo Richard Ginori la serie dei putti musicanti compare per la prima volta nel tariffario della Porcellana artistica e Capodimonte del 1939.

As a subject, the putto has always been present in the production of all the historic European makers. Its use from the eighteenth century onwards involved several areas of the applied arts. Its function was decorative. At the Doccia factory, for example, from the end of the eighteenth century we find individual small putti mounted on pedestals to decorate tables, or small seated putti for holding escutcheons, or used as knobs for soup-tureen covers. The series of our little putti is from a later period. This is suggested by, for example, the support they are seated on, which are vaguely reminiscent of the leaflike elements used in rococo style, but more stylised. In the archives of the Richard Ginori Museum the series of musician putti first appears in the pricing for Artistic and Capodimonte Porcelain of 1939.

Secondo quanto riportato dal marchese Leonardo Ginori Lisci nel suo libro La porcellana di Doccia, le maschere della Commedia dell’Arte vengono citate per la prima volta nei documenti del 1748-49 relativi alla Manifattura di Doccia, come: “Otto personaggi istrioni”. Le statuette inerenti alla serie furono ancora documentate nella versione sia bianca che policroma tra il 1760 e il 1780. Tutte le figure di questa collezione presentano comunque delle varianti rispetto quelle settecentesche ma ne riproducono fedelmente la vivacità del modellato, la naturalezza delle posture e la finezza dei dettagli.

According to the Marquis Leonardo Ginori Lisci in his book, The Porcelain of Doccia, the masks from the Commedia dell’Arte are first cited in the documents of the Doccia factory of 1748-1749 as “Eight theatrical characters”. The statuettes in the series were still documented in both white and polychromatic versions between 1760 and 1780. All the figures in this collection show variations from the eighteenth-century figures, but faithfully reproduce the liveliness of the moulding, the naturalness of the poses and the fineness of the details.

È una serie di statue di piccole dimensioni che, con spirito fiorentino propongono insieme, in modo caricaturale, il tema dei mestieri e una pungente galleria di tipi umani. Per la rappresentazione sono utilizzati, con grazia e finezza, piccole figure delineate in modo buffo. La collezione di 10 soggetti è una versione ampliata di una prima serie di cui è conservata copia nel Museo delle Porcellane di Doccia.

This series of small statues provides, with a unique Florentine spirit, a caricatural representation of the trades and a biting gallery of characters. Small, comical figures are used with grace and subtlety. The collection of ten subjects is an extended version of the first series, a copy of which is preserved in the Doccia Museum of Porcelain.

Le Dame, Clarice, Eliante e Laure, sono tre caratteristiche figure risalenti alla produzione ottocentesca della Manifattura di Doccia. La leggerezza e la grazia dei movimenti degli arti si fondono armonicamente con gli ampi volumi delle sottane, di cui la preziosa porcellana restituisce perfettamente ogni singolo dettaglio, ogni singola, vibrante, piega.

The Dames, Clarice, Eliante and Laure, are three characteristic figures dating back to the nineteenth century production of the Doccia Factory. The lightness and grace with which the limbs seem to move are offset by the full, voluminous skirts whose delicate porcelain shows each single detail, every single, vibrant, fold, to perfection.

All’origine di questa collezione di figurine decorate ci sono i modelli originali della seconda metà del settecento rappresentanti scene della vita aristocratica. In particolare qui si tratta di Cavalieri e Ballerine impegnati nella loro danza. La vivezza delle figure nasce dall’accuratezza con cui la porcellana da forma agli abiti ricchi di pieghe, merletti e dettagli brillanti. La serie si compone di quattro pezzi: l’invito al ballo, il Minuetto, la Ballerina e il Cavaliere.

At the origin of this collection of decorated figurines are the original moulds from the second half of the eighteenth century, depicting scenes from aristocratic life. Here, ladies are shown with their dance partners, in the middle of the dance. The lifelike quality of the figures comes from the accuracy with which the porcelain gives shape to the clothes rich in folds, lace and brilliant details. The series consists of four parts: the invitation to the dance, the Minuet, the Dancer and the Squire.

LA MUSICAIl tema di questa serie è, ancora una volta, la vita aristocratica settecentesca, epoca a cui risalgono i modelli originali. Il Concerto, la Musica, sono al centro dell’attenzione. The theme of this series is, once again, eighteenth century aristocratic life, the period from which the original moulds originate. The Concert and the Music are the focus of attention. In an imaginary drawing room glittering with stucco work and décor, the Violoncellist, Violinist and Guitarist set in gracious, intent poses, pluck pretty melodies from their instruments. Two lovely Dancers follow their rhythm with lightness and grace.

Important groups from original moulds dating back to the Doccia Factory’s Second Period (1758-1791). There are three subjects: the Secret Note, the Clerk and the Courtier, portraying classic characters and poses of late eighteenth century iconography. The composition talent and manual ability to give shape to these figures shows, in every detail, the quality and skill of workmanship that Richard-Ginori 1735 porcelain, after more than two and a half centuries, continues to express.

Objects decorated using the narrative bas-relief technique used in the Doccia Factory since it first began production when, by demand of Marquis Ginori, moulds were created from a series of silver plates and bowls to create narrative bas/relief ornaments in porcelain. The technique used gives the pieces in this collection a valuable, sumptuous appearance.

MANIEÈ una selezione eclettica di oggetti appartenenti al patrimonio di stile di Richard Ginori e la cui origine data in differenti periodi storici. In molti casi si può risalire a un prototipo settecentesco, nato quasi sempre come elemento di un servizio da tavola, da tè o da caffè con una funzione ben precisa, oggi spesso mutata perché legata al modo settecentesco di imbandire la tavola: ad esempio le potiche, i rinfrescatoi, i cachepot o la marescialla, ispirata al gusto rococò. Alcune forme invece, ad esempio le bomboniere, la bottiglia da whisky o la campana a stella, sono sicuramente d’invenzione novecentesca. Sicuramente comune a tutta la collezione è la finezza del disegno, la precisione del modellato, la preziosità dell’ispirazione.

This is an eclectic selection of objects belonging to the heritage of style that is Richard Ginori, and whose origins lie in different historical periods. In many cases an eighteenth-century prototype can be found, almost always created as part of a table service, either for tea or coffee, with a precisely-defined function that today is often changed because it is associated with eighteenth-century modes of setting the table: for example the potiches, the coolers, the cachepots or the “marescialla”, are rococo-inspired. Other forms, such as the bonbonnière, the whisky bottle or the star- bell, are undoubtedly twentieth century inventions. What is certainly common to the entire collection is the nobility of the design, the precision of the moulding, and the preciousness of the inspiration.

Il divertimento cromatico del bianco e nero è reso insolito e prezioso da finiture in una ricercata nuance rossa. Stripes è l’idea Richard-Ginori di contemporaneità classica.

Created by Elena Plebani, the range of Stripes vases is animated by the harmony with which the shape of the objects, simple and almost classical, embraces the decorative invention of the geometric designs that recall the light-heartedness of pop but also the irreverent rigour of optical art. The particular black and white colour combination is rendered even more unusual and refined by the stylish red finish. Stripes is the Richard-Ginori take on classic contemporary style.

The talent of designers Setsu & Shinobu Ito has blossomed, like an origami flower from the water, into a refined line with an original spirituality. The strictures and metaphors of Zen-its coded gardens, its origami, and the love for the objects that gaze at us-are expressed in the linear and natural shape of the vases and table centrepiece, but also in polysemous objects, utterly, functionally and formally free. The inspiration may be the crease of a garment or the fold of a leaf: Richard Ginori porcelain models this inspiration with gentleness and nobility, making it real.

NAUTILUS

Gariboldi fu collaboratore di Gio Ponti dal 1928 e dal 1930 al 1970 fornì disegni per le ceramiche della manifattura; dal 1946 fu direttore del Centro Artistico della Richard-Ginori. Negli stessi anni adeguò forme e dettagli funzionali degli oggetti d’uso ai nuovi stili di vita quotidiani e alla riduzione degli spazi abitativi, compattando, scomponendo, serializzando. Sempre con spregiudicata quanto controllata originalità: suo il servizio Ulpia presentato alla Triennale del 1954. La collezione Nautilus ne è l’espressione, la sobrietà e la tenuta concettuale la rendono ancor oggi attuale come molte altre sue creazioni.

Gariboldi worked with Gio Ponti from 1928 onwards, and from 1930 to 1970 he created designs for ceramics made by the factory. In 1946 he became director of the Artistic Centre of Richard Ginori. Around then he also forged the shapes and functional details of commonly-used objects to the meet new everyday lifestyles and reduced living spaces, compacting, disassembling and serialising. But always with an originality that was as open-minded as it was controlled: his Ulpia service was presented at the Triennale in 1954. The Nautilus collection is his expression: its simplicity and conceptual capacity make it modern even today, like many other creations of his.

Franco Albini è uno dei grandi protagonisti del Design Italiano; pioniere di una nuova sensibilità estetica e formale. Protagonista del Movimento Moderno, la pulizia delle sue linee si realizza in forme minimali capaci di coniugare l’essenzialità degli elementi, alle suggestioni di mondi poetici e fantastici. Gli oggetti che Albini disegnò per Richard-Ginori sono “pezzi” a sé stanti, intrisi di una loro anima segreta che aderisce e trascende la realtà, “tracce di storie” e che entrano negli spazi dell’abitare con il loro valore simbolico e funzionale.

Franco Albini is one of the great stars of Italian Design; pioneer of a new aesthetic and formal sensibility. Protagonist of the Modern Movement, the simplicity and clarity of its lines results in minimal shapes that combine the essential nature of the elements with the suggestion of poetic, fantastic worlds. The objects that Albini designed for Richard-Ginori are “pieces” in themselves, steeped in their secret spirit that yields and transcends reality, “traces of stories” which enter homes with their symbolic and functional value.
