The battle was part of the Sicilian Expedition and resulted in Garibaldi'sthousand-men army, backed up by Sicilian volunteers (the "picciotti") and members of thePiedmontese army (not wearing the regular uniform to avoid political speculations), defeating theBourbon troops of Colonel Bosco. This drawing probably refers to a key episode of the battle, whichtook place in the afternoon of July 20, when a sieged Garibaldi was rescued by the Sicilian "picciotti"and, subsequently, led his party to final victory.
