The Russian Avant-gardeSiberia and the Eastedited by John E. Bowlt, Nicoletta Misler, Evgenija Petrova

The complex relationshipbetween Russian art andthe East–be it the RussianEast or the Far East–withspecial focus on theradical artists who shapedthe development of modernart a century ago

The rituals of Siberian shamans, the ancient funerary sculptures from thesteppes seen as a crystallized presence of archaic and everlasting forms ofworship, Chinese popular prints, Japanese engravings, Theosophic and

Anthroposophic theories, and Indian philosophy are but some of the elementsthat inspired the aesthetic and theoretical pursuits of the generation of Russianartists and writers just before the October 1917 Revolution. This book examines figures such as Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, Pavel Filonov,Natalia Goncharova, Wassily Kandinsky, Mikhail Larionov and Kazimir Male-vich, who were deeply aware of the significance of the East for their art, and con-tributed to launching a rich debate that left a deep and permanent mark on theirartistic praxis.

• The artists of the Russian avant-garde and their discovery of new sources ofinspiration.

• The catalogue draws a connection between the chief representatives of theRussian avant-garde and other less-known but just as important artists of theperiod such as Nikolai Kalmakov, Sergei Konenkov and Vasilii Vatagin.

• The fundamental importance of Oriental and Eurasian sources in RussianModernism.

John Bowlt teaches Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of South-ern California.Nicoletta Misler teaches History of Modern Art from Eastern Eu-rope at the University of Naples, Italy. Evgenija Petrova is one of the major schol-ars on twentieth-century Russian art.

Visual Music MastersAbstract Explorationsof Past and Present ArtistsAdriano Abbado

The different techniquesof realization andpresentation of audiovisualart, the thought of theprotagonists and the resultsof their artistic research

What links exist between sounds and abstract images? What were thefirst audiovisual instruments? What was the influence of music onKandinsky’s work? What are the most relevant audiovisual installa-

tions? What are the relationships between VJs and live cinema? And, what issynesthesia?Visual Music Masters answers these and many other questions concerning the re-lationship between art and music, spanning from Toulouse-Lautrec to Nam JunePaik, from Händel to Xenakis, and from Wilfred to Kurokawa. It is an in-depthstudy focused on both historical experience and contemporary research, illus-trated by 150 colour images. The association between images and music arousedthe curiosity of a number of artists and thinkers of the past, it stimulated artisticcreativity in the twentieth century and continues to be a topic of great interest to-day. This book aims to take stock of the situation, now that abstract audiovisualart, having reached maturity, is enjoying a new season of renewed vitality.

• Visual Music Masters depicts in a clear and effective language the stages and theprotagonists of the technologic and multisensory revolution in art which gave formto a new and independent expressive form: visual music.

Adriano Abbado began to work with digital images and sounds back in 1981. In1986 he received a Fulbright scholarship to study at the MIT Media Laboratory. His most recent works have been shown in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Milan, NewYork, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Strasbourg and Washington, DC.

Alberto BurriBlackWorkedited by Bruno Coràtexts by Massimo Di Carlo and Laura Lorenzoni

A distinctive featureof Alberto Burri’s artisticimagery: the treatment ofblack in his Cellotex works

Through a selection of thirty works created in a twenty-year time span(1972–92), including some unpublished and never before exhibited can-vases from Italian private collections, this volume offers a perspective on

the expressive outcomes that marked Alberto Burri’s practice after the 1950s and1960s, at a time in which he had already gained international critical acclaim.Cellotex, which the artist had long used as a support for his compositions, becamethe “work” itself. Through a gradual process of stripping down, Burri reached thebasic underlying element, i.e. the material that had previously been approached inview of something else. As is the case with his more iconic cycles (such as Sacchi,Legni and Combustioni plastiche), matter here continues to be the undisputed pro-tagonist, capable of setting the rules and fixing compositional balances.

• The book includes: an introduction by Maurizio Calvesi, an essay and an analy-sis of the works by Bruno Corà, an inquiry by Rita Olivieri into the critical re-sponse to the Cellotex works, an essay by Vittorio Rubiu, a detailed biography ofthe artist edited by Aldo Iori, a reconstruction of the relationship between Burriand the Venice Biennale carried out by Laura Lorenzoni and a dialogue betweenManuela De Leonardis and Aurelio Amendola, the photographer with whom Bur-ri had a long friendship.

• A specific section (edited by Elena Dalla Costa) reconstructs the contents ofexhibitions by Burri between 1977 and 2007 in which the Cellotex pieces werethe only works on show.

Bruno Corà, a renowned Italian art critic, is a member of the Burri Foundation.

Robert MapplethorpeGermano Celant

25 years after Mapplethorpe’sdeath, an overviewon his nudes, portraits,self-portraits, floral still lifesand other workscompiled by the art criticGermano Celant

Robert Mapplethorpe’s wide, provocative and powerful body of work hasestablished him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth cen-tury. The American photographer is mostly known for images that simul-

taneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylised composi-tions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes and studio portraits ofartists and celebrities, to list a few of his preferred genres.Since 1977 Germano Celant has come in contact with Robert Mapplethorpe, re-alising interviews and writing essays on the occasion of several publications andexhibitions. For the first time, this volume gathers the complete anthology ofCelant’s writings on the artist: from the 1983 exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, projected with the collaboration of the artist himself, to the posthumous writingspublished in the catalogues prepared on the occasion of the exhibitions at theGuggenheim Museum, New York and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburgsince 1990. This book, through over 140 images and texts that appear both per-sonal and scientific, aims to pay tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe’s contribution tothe history of photography.

• The book presents a wide selection of Mapplethorpe’s nudes, portraits, self-portraits, floral still lifes and other works.

• One of the great masters of photography, obsessed by the search for perfect form.

Aphotographer of the so-called Düsseldorf School, Axel Hütte trained un-der Bernd Becher with Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Hofer andAndreas Gursky.

This volume presents two series of photographs. The first illustrates the author’sjourney fromGermany to Italy, a sort of retracing of the nineteenth-centuryGrandTour : from Alpine passes surrounded by snowy summits to Apennine peaks. The second explores Venice and the interiors of some of its best-known palazzithrough colour and black-and-white photographs, offering an austere and inti-mate picture of the lagoon city.

• The most recent works of one of the great masters of contemporary photogra-phy, protagonist of the Düsseldorf School.

• The two series combine to bring about a cultured and refined celebration of ar-chitecture, be it in the midst of nature or in the city; they share the silence and thedistant echoes of the history of men and events.

Recycled LandscapesMichela De Poli, Guido Incerti

Through a comprehensiveexamination of a numberof international architecturalprojects, this book offersa compelling new perspectiveon modern living andcontemporary architecture

Aspopulations grow, where and how we live is a major concern. Very of-ten architects address the issue of housing, and converting spaces is nor-mally a more satisfactory solution than building from scratch. This vol-

ume examines re-purposed sites, reclaimed quarries, former landfills, unusedspaces that have been recognized in the last twenty years as potential venues forthe development of new social, economic and environmental assets.A selection of “recycled” projects from various parts of the world provides a mapof the state of the art internationally, describing what has been achieved to dateand opening a window onto possible scenarios for the future. In addition to themany images and references, a brief study illustrates the project methodologies inorder to provide fundamental guidelines for planning and design.

Napoleone MartinuzziVenini 1925–1931edited by Marino Barovier

A splendid catalogue devotedto the work of an artistwho was responsiblefor some of the most originalglass artworks in art history

Napoleone Martinuzzi, an artist held in high esteem by poet Gabrieled’Annunzio, became a partner of Paolo Venini in 1925. In his capacityas the artistic director of V.S.M. Venini & C. he designed magnificent ob-

jects until 1931.This book reviews his entire production as a glass designer, consisting of about 600pieces identified after lengthy and thorough research. Unpublished records foundin the Archivio Storico Venini have allowed researchers to appreciate the full ex-tent of Martinuzzi’s contribution to the factory’s production and to identify manyof his designs, some of which were previously unknown. After devising elegant clear blown glass objects, the artist went on to explore pre-viously unseen matter like bubble glass and opaque glass in intense and solidcolours; he designed a wide repertoire of vases, cups, lights and peculiar decora-tive objects like fruits, coloured glass creatures and succulent plants, some ofwhich were monumental in size. The book contains a wide range of period pho-tographs, signed designs and factory drawings.

• One of the great myths of modern glasswork.• The first catalogue raisonné of the glassworks designed by sculptor NapoleoneMartinuzzi on behalf of the world-renowned Venini glassware.

• A must-have for collectors, scholars and art dealers.

Marino Barovier is an author and independent curator. He was born in Venice in-to one of the oldest families of Murano glassmakers. In 1983, he joined his wifeMarina in the study of the history of twentieth-century Murano glass.

Chen ZhenCatalogue raisonnéedited by ADAC-Association des Amis de Chen Zhen

The complete monographdevoted to the workof Chen Zhen, including allhis currently known worksand the fullest informationon the Chinese artist

This catalogue raisonné provides new possibilities for analysis and com-parison within Chen Zhen’s entire oeuvre. Since 2008, a research teamhas undertaken a meticulous and systematic study of the artist’s archives

in collaboration with collectors, galleries, museums, public and private institu-tions, exhibition curators, and his friends.Chen Zhen’s catalogue raisonné is the exhaustive inventory of the authenticatedwork of the artist, catalogued chronologically in two volumes: the first covers theyears 1978–96, the second 1997–present. Isabelle Renard and Xu Min’s brilliantessay, guiding us through Chen Zhen’s work, is one of the major contributions tothis catalogue: it places the artworks in their historic context and highlights the keyperiods in his creative development. Chen Zhen was a privileged witness of eco-nomic and cultural globalization, and particularly of the gulf dividing China andthe Western world. A stranger under his own regime at home and a foreigner inFrance, where he moved in 1986, Chen Zhen was on the margins of two systems, looking for his own way through them. Chen Zhen’s works question the world, question humanity and its relations with the environment in order to establish atrans-cultural discourse and mode of thought.

• A complete overview on the artist’s work, from 1977 to the present day.• Leading thread of the catalogue is a text written by Isabelle Renard and XuMin.

ADAC – Association Des Amis de Chen Zhen was created in 2003 to promoteChen Zhen’s artistic heritage.

Fahd Burki is known for his works on paper employingacrylic, charcoal, marker pen and collage, and numerousscreen prints. These works frequently feature abstract

graphic fields that contain a central form dominating the pictureplane. The sources for these forms range from tribal folk art toscience fiction. Painstakingly produced by hand, Fahd Burki’simagery offers a series of playful and at times menacing icons andsymbols harvested from a very personal mythology of the present,at once disconcertingly familiar and completely novel.

• Fahd Burki is recognised among the Asian art community for his intriguing works. He received the “John Jones Art on Paper Award” at Art Dubai 2013.• He undertook a research-based residency at Edinburgh Printmakers in 2013 aspart of the “Below Another Sky” project, a collaborative programme developed bythe Scottish Print Networks.• Recent exhibitions include Grey Noise, Dubai, and Carré d’Art, Nîmes, France.

Marco BagnoliGermano Celant

A detailed overview of the work of Marco Bagnoli, one ofthe most representative artists on the Italian scene in the 1970s,in a gorgeous monograph that presents his complete oeuvre

Asort of catalogue raisonné, this volume gathersaround 350 reproductions of installations thatthrough different techniques – drawing, paint-

ing, print and sculpture – involve the surrounding envi-ronment, creating unexpected relations between imagi-nation and sensitivity. Marco Bagnoli’s research is char-acterised by two different approaches: his work is root-ed in the scientific tradition of Italian Reinassance and, atthe same time, is influenced by mystic poetry and Sufiphilosophy. His artistic career began in the 1970s and re-

flects the dispute between Conceptual Art and Neo-expressionism that shaped the pe-riod, combining these two opposing tendencies.

• The book includes a widespread chronology and a selection of the artist’s state-ments; it is richly illustrated by nearly 500 images that, in addition to documentingBagnoli’s creative journey, bear witness to the historical period in which it unfolded.

For any reader interested in understanding contempo-rary Chinese culture and art, this book provides aunique viewpoint: it approaches the story of a Chinese

contemporary artist from the perspective of the history ofideas and art rather than that of news and politics. It adopts methods and approaches easily understandable byWestern readers in order to draw them closer to the enigmathat Chinese contemporary culture represents.

• The narratives of Chinese contemporary art stretch backabout three decades; Wang Guangyi is a leading figure throughout this period.• Wang Guangyi’s art is permeated by his distinctive approach to philosophy andtheology and has reflected all of the complex topics that have emerged in the pro-gression from the Cold War to the era of globalisation.

Karen KnorrIndia Songedited by Rosa Maria Falvotexts by William Dalrymple and Christopher Pinneyand an interview with the artist by Rosa Maria Falvo

The extraordinary workof acclaimed photographerKaren Knorr and her poeticjourney through the Indiansubcontinent

Over an established career, Karen Knorr’s work has developed a criticaland playful dialogue with documentary photography through the use ofdifferent visual and textual strategies. Her aim is to explore everyday

subjects such as family, lifestyle, culture and animal life to subsequently stage themin very unusual contexts. She investigates issues of connoisseurship, heritage, andart through staged events in architectural interiors. Karen Knorr began the IndiaSong series in 2008, after a life-changing trip through Rajasthan. These latest im-ages, which draw inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals inliterature and art, create scenarios that are at once otherworldly and surreal.

• These exquisite photographs challenge our notions of beauty and cultural heritage.• Karen Knorr’s imagery features two formal constants: the insertion by digitalmeans of animals in architectural interiors and their significant pose. Each fin-ished image is both a mystery and a fable, referencing the vast tradition of pic-turing animals in art along with the Western appreciation and appropriation ofEastern culture and forms.

William Dalrymple is an award-winning British writer, historian and curator, aswell as a prominent broadcaster and critic. He is one of the founders and a co-di-rector of the Zee Jaipur Literary Festival in India. Christopher Pinney, an an-thropologist and art historian, is currently professor of anthropology and visualculture at University College London. • Leonardo’s machines and models are accompanied by specific references to theartist’s sketches and handwritten notes.

• In addition in the book: historical-philological reconstructions, detailed de-scriptions of the machines and their working principles and historical iconogra-phy of comparison.

Bernard KhouryTheWrongApproach

The Blossom AvenueFor better human livingMarco Facchinetti, Marco Dellavalle

A photographic survey of the Imam Mohammed binAbdul Wahab Mosque in Doha, Qatar, this volume re-traces the story of the building and the architectural el-ements of the religious complex, projected in full respectof the traditional Qatari architecture.Although this extravagant mosque has a very modernfeel with crisp lines and large open outdoor spaces, itpreserves some of the traditional features of the Gulf re-gion’s architectural past.

• The Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque inDoha is Qatar’s largest mosque, covering a total area of 175,164 sqm. On the wholethe mosque can hold a congregation of 30,000 people.

The Wrong Approach investigates the various events and per-sonalities that shaped the context within which architect BernardKhoury had to operate; particularly that of Beirut, as it emergedfrom the early post-war 1990s up to its present state of uncon-trolled dissonance. In keeping with the architect’s approach, thebook is brimming with contradictions and does not seek to por-tray his work in light of consensual definitions of context andterritory; rather than an attempt to theorise the architect’s moti-vations and objectives, it reads like a sort of counter-manifesto.

• The volume is composed of four distinct sections: the narrative, the album, the in-dex and the synopsis of characters mentioned in the text.

Marco Facchinetti and Marco Dellavalle have put for-ward incisive plans and projects built up around the twokey concepts of design and feasibility, which prove tru-ly capable of modifying reality, at least on the local scale. The reflections developed and the projects illustratedhere show how planning is able, through the use of de-sign and of correct, effective procedures of implemen-tation, to affect local realities by creating evolutionaryscenarios and new ways of making the most of what al-ready exists.

• The volume gathers a group of projects that can become reference points for stu-dents and professionals alike.

Marc Quinn.MemoryBoxGermano Celant

Sculptures, paintings and other art objectsby one of the most original Young British Artistsin an unparalleled exhibition catalogue

This catalogue gathers a number of works by therenowned British artist. “A journey from the originsof life” that, according to the artist, through very pow-

erful works celebrates “the awe and wonder of the world inwhich we live.”Marc Quinn began his career exploring issues such as the re-lation between art and science, the human body and its sur-vival mechanisms, life and its preservation, beauty and death.Through an essay-interview of the artist with GermanoCelant, the volume offers in-depth insight into Quinn’s con-

ceptual practice that incorporates sculpture, painting and installations. The artist’spreoccupation with the metamorphic ability of both human life and nature points tohis fascination with our innate spirituality. Quinn questions the codes of naturethrough his adoption of uncompromising materials such as ice, blood, marble, glass, and lead. Through the use of such materials, his works are at once poetic and con-frontational through their exploration of life, death, sexuality, and religion.

Visual artist, choreographer, writer and director, JanFabre has been one of the most influential figures onthe European scene for over twenty years. His

provocative forays into all different art forms are aimed atbreaking down the artistic and moral barriers of his times. This monograph brings together, for the first time, the actionart and performances, both public and private, held by theartist in Belgium and abroad from the 1970s to the present. The extreme, even brazen exploration of the human body, which frequently scandalizes viewers, is linked to the idea of

metamorphosis, which Fabre may have derived from that passion for the sciences heinherited from his great-grandfather, the esteemed entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre.Jan Fabre has devoted much of his career to studying the human body and its trans-figuration, central themes in his work, considering performance art a “per-for-a(c)tion” of the body with respect to the outer world: a way to explore its limits, ac-tions and reactions, both inside and out.

ing protagonists of twentieth-century’s artistic development.Edited by Luca Massimo Barbero, the catalogue follows a chronological order and isdivided into sections devoted to the diverse directions explored by the artist in hiswide-ranging creative activities. Experimentation on paper was Fontana’s chosenmeans to test the richness and novelty of his inspiration. In fact, through his works onpaper he would constantly verify his insights, both in the embryonic and definingstage of his formal and conceptual discoveries. This catalogue raisonné starts withthe astonishing corpus of figural works and culminates in the artist’s original inven-tion of “spatial” art, which led to the creation and development of the highly indi-vidual “holes”, “environments” and “slashes”. The catalogue raisonné presents over5,500 works executed between 1928 and 1968, with individual entries that includebibliographical and exhibition reference.

• This catalogue raisonné covers four decades of the artist’s creative activity.• The study includes extensive and heretofore unpublished documentation onFontana’s dialogue with architecture and decoration, up to his experimentation withunusual techniques and materials.

Luca Massimo Barbero, a scholar and critic of modern and contemporary art, is As-sociate Curator of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and author of numer-ous publications and exhibitions devoted to the art of the twentieth century.

The History of the NudeFlaminio Gualdoni

From the Palaeolithic “Great Mothers” to the Greek athletes, from Titian’s Venus of Urbino to Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man,from the Odalisque by Boucher to the amazons of HelmutNewton and the desolate lifeless bodies of Andres Serrano, the nude is the theme of artistic representation par excellence. In a richly illustrated new reference book the nude body as theincarnation of perfect beauty and the ban imposed by Christianculture; the renewed triumph of ancient beauty in the Renais-sance and the study of anatomy; the eighteenth-century visual li-

centiousness and the photographic nude; ideal beauty, eroticism, pornography; the nudeand its flaunted truthfulness in twentieth-century art; and finally, the nude as work of artin post-WWII avant-garde, with performance, body art and experimental theatre.

photography worldwide, for an original vision of the all-timemasterpieces of Cinema. Almost a catalogue raisonnéof the major movies of world cinema starting in 1910 andstretching all the way to our day and age, describing 150profiles of cinematographers. World-class figures whohave helped us to dream and taught us to love: The Art

of Cinematography. Essentially a tribute by theWriters of Light to theWriters of Light. This book, written by Lorenzo Codelli and Bob Fisher, is illustrated with double visionphotographs, specially reworked by the editor, Vittorio Storaro, and it is enriched withcontributions by Luciano Tovoli, Gabriele Lucci, and Daniele Nannuzzi. The book comes with the DVD Videopedia with moving images taken fromthe 150 movies that have made cinema history, curated by Daniele Nannuzzi and ac-companied by an original “soundtrack” by Francesco Cara.

Walter Chappell (1925–2000) is considered oneof the foremost figures in twentieth-centuryAmerican photography. His thinking and vi-

sion of the world were closely connected with the in-timistic and spiritual explorations undertaken betweenthe 1950s and 1970s by artists like MinorWhite and PaulCaponigro. Chappell photographed various subjects, buthis inner eye was particularly stimulated by the form ofthe human body and landscapes, as well as the combina-tion of both, through which he endeavoured to perceive

the creative flow, the energy that runs through and connects all things.Produced to accompany the first major European retrospective show ofWalter Chap-pell’s work, this catalogue includes over 130 photographs, all originals, as well as theunfinished and previously unpublished albumWorld of Flesh, which the photographerintended as the primary publication on his work.

Don McCullinImpossible Peaceedited by Sandro Parmiggiani

An impressive retrospective coveringthe last fifty years of Don McCullin’s work

DonMcCullin (London, 1935) is one of the mostimportant photographers of our time. For morethan 50 years, his uncompromising black-and-

white photographs have shaped our awareness and un-derstanding of modern conflict, and its consequences. These images tell the remarkable story of his life andwork, including most famous assignments in Berlin, Viet-nam, Cambodia, Biafra, Bangladesh and the Middle East.Winner of the Warsaw Gold Medal and the World PressPhotographer Award, he received the ICP Cornell Capa

Award in 2006. The key periods in McCullin’s life, including his renowned work forthe Sunday Times, are explored here alongside more recent projects with ChristianAid, his photographs of last tribes in the Omo River Valley, South Kenya and IrianJaya, New Guinea and, in the last few years, still lifes and English landscapes at hishome in Somerset. A photographic journey across the ruins and landscapes of theRoman Empire boundaries completes the volume.

Edward Weston (Highland Park, Illinois, 1886 –Wildcat Hill, California, 1958) began to take pho-tographs at the age of 16 and in 1911 opened his

first photographic studio in the town of Tropico, Cali-fornia. He became an increasingly important figure onthe American art scene, so much so that in 1936 he wasthe first photographer to receive a research grant fromthe Guggenheim Foundation. In 1946 the MoMA inNew York gave him a major retrospective, showing 300works and thus definitively confirming him as one of the

great artists of the twentieth century. Often directly compared to painting and sculp-ture, Weston’s photography is the expression of a relentless quest for pureness, bothin composition and in the almost obsessive perfection of the image. This catalogue, published to accompany an exhibition in Modena, the first show inItaly after twenty years, celebrates Weston’s extraordinary oeuvre with over 120 orig-inal photographic prints.

Patriarchal Africa. The Last SunrisePhoto-chronicle of the Vanishing Lifephotographs by Sergey Yastrzhembsky

bouti, Botswana, Morocco, Benin, South Soudan, Mali,Burkina Faso, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda. The camera lensof Sergey Yastrezhembsky is focused on the scenes of patri-archal daily routine of Africans, who try to preserve their ad-herence to the traditions of their forefathers in everyday life, customs, and religion regardless of the rising pressure of per-vasive globalization.

• The author was present at religious ceremonies usually forbidden to strangers, filmed habitual occupations, style of life and evidence of the boundless creativity inarts and handicraft of these populations.• Sergey Yastrzhembsky considers this book as a kind of requiem to the vanishing pa-triarchal Africa.

Mighty Silence. Images of DestructionTheGreat 2011 Earthquake and Tsunamiof East Japan and Fukushimaphotographed by Yasushi Handa

A personal, luminous and moving account of post-tsunami Japan

Anextraordinary photographic report by the famousJapanese fashion photographer Yasushi Handa onthe thunderous tsunami that swept through the To-

hoku region on the heels of the Great East Japan Earth-quake, which struck on 11 March 2011.The images capture the landscape 20 days after the oceanwater had retreated. The tsunami engulfed cities and townsthat thrive on fishing and agriculture, along the Pacificcoastlines of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima pre-fectures. It spared no one and no thing. Over 18,000 peo-ple were killed or went missing.

Taken with a 65-million pixel camera, the pictures are almost surreal because theycapture details missed by the naked eye. What we’ve typically seen in the media arepeople determined to move beyond their misfortune, to deepen their ties with thecommunity and overcome the overwhelming adversity; in contrast, this book puts theharsh reality first and forefront.

Hajj - The Journey through ArtExhibition Albumedited by Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya and Cécile Bresc

A richly-illustrated volume devoted to theHajj, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, across the centuries

Oneof the five pillars of Islam central to Muslim be-lief, Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Mus-lim must make at least once in their lifetime if they

are at all able. This catalogue, accompanying a major exhibi-tion in Doha, Qatar, charts the history of this deeply personaljourney. It explores the history of this pilgrimage through thecenturies, focusing on the routes taken by pilgrims, the ritu-als of Hajj as depicted through art, the experiences of pil-grims after completion of Hajj, and includes a special sectiondedicated to the oral histories and objects of Qatari pilgrims.

Beautiful objects, including historical and contemporary art, textiles and manuscriptsfrom the collections of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha bring to life the profoundspiritual significance of the sacred rituals that have remained unchanged since theProphet Muhammad’s time in the 7th century AD.

• The book accompanies the first exhibition of its kind to be held in a Muslim country.• Although the concept of the exhibition is based on the British Museum’s earliershowcase, as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, it is unique in that 90% ofthe objects to be exhibited are from Qatari collections.

Dr. Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya is the Curator of Manuscripts at the Museum of Is-lamic Art, Doha. She worked at the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre Mu-seum in Paris for the preparation of the new display which opened in September2012. Dr. Cécile Bresc is the former Curator of Coins at the Museum of Islamic Art,Doha, and the assistant curator of the exhibition.

LaFerrari: the last masterpiecerealized by the worldwide famous Italian brand

What lies behind the search for excellence in asports car? This book reveals the work putinto the production of the new supercar, La-

Ferrari: a car whose ambitions are evident in its veryname. A voyage of discovery of the Italian passion, method and excellence that created an authentic mas-terpiece on four wheels.Comparisons with its predecessors, the first style drafts, the clay models, wind-tunnel research, studies on cock-

pit ergonomics, vehicle dynamics, the perfection of the gears and brakes – all is re-vealed here in an ebb and flow of images and drawings. Furthermore, the develop-ment of the HY-KERS technology, thanks to its contribution in Formula 1 races, al-lows an insight into one of the most advanced frontiers in the world of sports cars des-tined for the road. High-craftsmanship, human experiences and futuristic technolo-gies combine in this fascinating story, a group work that achieves the greatest combi-nation of innovation and aesthetic beauty.

Carlo ScarpaVenini 1932–1947Marino Barovier

A splendid catalogue devoted to the work of an artistresponsible for some of the most original glass artworks

Through around 300 works, documents and orig-inal drawings from private collections and mu-seums from all over the world, this important

volume reconstructs the work and life of Carlo Scarpafrom the very beginnings of his career, when he workedas artistic director for the Venini glassworks between1932 and 1947.The experience he acquired in those years offered himthe possibility of following his peculiar experimental vo-

cation that was to also distinguish his work as an architect, and of carrying forwardresearch intended to investigate the expressive possibilities of glass. Under Scarpa’sartistic direction the forms created at Venini glassworks were more sober and mod-ern, geometrically-inspired, and above all, the importance of the designer’s role wasestablished in the history of twentieth-century Venetian glass, which owes to himmuch of its substantial renewal.

Numerous leading twentieth-century artistsshowed an interest in jewellery, often throughlove of a woman, or for their daughters. Despite

the opening of art from the 1910s onwards to the ab-stract and the conceptual, they happily bridged the gapthat seemed to be deepening between art and crafts-manship. The collection of Diane Venet, which she reg-ularly exhibits, is set out like a veritable intimate mu-seum, narrating a specific history of art.

This fascinating book features over 200 pieces of jewellery designed by the greatestartists of the twentieth and twenty-first century, among whom Picasso, Warhol, Nikide Saint Phalle, Kapoor, Soto, Louise Bourgeois, Spoerri…

designer clearly reflects the teaching of modernists—es-pecially Gio Ponti, Ernesto Nathan Rogers and Le Cor-busier, who envisaged the figure of the architect as a de-signer of things ranging “from the spoon to the city”, andwho constantly stressed the idea of the exploration ofspace, later taken up by Richard Meier. Through morethan 200 images, many of them never before published,

the volume examines the fascinating story of Federico Delrosso Architects, a teamfocusing on residential and commercial planning and design based in Milan.

• Minimalistic and rational in his formal choices, emotionally engaging and innova-tive in the materials and finishings that shape his projects.• A sober formal elegance enhanced by a measured and experimental use of materials.

Modern skyscrapers are often inseparably asso-ciated with images of the cities that host them:the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Gherkin in Lon-

don, the Empire State Building in New York, and so on.And while skyscrapers emerge in large numbers, onlythe most beautiful of them become symbols of the citythat hosts them. This book presents Vasily Klyukin’sprojects: towers and residential buildings that have notfound their home yet, but some of them will be built inthe future and become architectural symbols of our age.

• In the book, real photographs of over a hundred citiesfrom every continent are used to present Vasily Klyukin’s projects, taking into ac-count climatic, seismic and historical characteristics as well as his own associationswith each location, showing the shock of a bold fantasy made real.• The volume gathers a number of ideas for buildings, including new constructions, reconstructions, but also the redesigning of facades on a series of buildings in Monaco.

The Amazing ShoemakerFairy tales and legends about shoes and shoemakersedited by Stefania Ricci

Salvatore Ferragamo’s amazing life and an extraordinary journeyinto the world of fairy tales about shoes and shoemakers

Inthe course of time, myths and legends from aroundthe world have often featured shoes and the shoe-maker’s amazing craft, perhaps because the shoe is a

symbol of grace and wealth, or perhaps because of thatenchanted aura that surrounds the figure of the shoe-maker. Salvatore Ferragamo’s remarkable life, which runsparallel to stories of fairies, mystical shoemakers andmagical shoes, also has the ingredients of a fantastic ad-venture. The reader will be spellbound by each and everychapter of this story, and carried as if in a dream to the

realm of imagination: from Salvatore’s childhood to his voyage on a steamer headedtowards the United States, down to his arrival in Hollywood, where his shoes con-quered the world of cinema and were worn by the most beautiful women in the world:the princesses and fairies of the modern age.

• A must for everyone interested in fashion design and fashion culture.• Classic tales are accompanied by new stories illustrated by contemporary artists.

In 2009, on the occasion of Bulgari’s 125th anniversary, theprestigious Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome dedicatedto this great jeweller its most important retrospective ever.

Next came the magnificent 2010 exhibition in Paris, beneaththe majestic vaults of the Grand Palais; it was then hosted in2011 by the National Museum in Beijing and subsequently bythe Aurora Museum in Shanghai. Nearly 600 masterpieces of

Bulgari’s art were thus exhibited for the first time to the general public. Displayedalong with special features, as the gorgeous collection that once belonged to ElizabethTaylor, were archival documents such as photographs, preparatory drawings and filmstills, eloquently illustrating the epoch to which each piece belonged. Since past cat-alogues have already exhaustively documented the jewels on display, this book takesa different approach, crowning this quartet of exhibitions with a selection of imagesthat pay homage to the extraordinary visual heritage of the maison. It also provides astunning gallery of international celebrities wearing Bulgari jewels, from ElizabethTaylor, Ingrid Bergman and Sophia Loren to Lauren Hutton, Kirk Douglas and Sting.

In the GondolaDavid Alan Brown

A masterpiece by Canaletto leads a young art historianon the trail of an unsolved mystery

Ayoung art historian pursuing academic success. A paint-ing by the most famous eighteenth-century painter of ve-dute, Canaletto. A gondola once possibly belonging to

the poet Robert Browning – and who else before him? These arethe key elements of the novel. When Jeremy Allyn is assignedCanaletto’s Vedute by his teacher as the topic for his dissertation,a subject many have already written about, he realizes he mustfind an original perspective. He therefore decides to focus on

Canaletto’s figures, a secondary feature of his celebrated architectural scenes. Thismarks the beginning of an adventure with unexpected turns that will lead Jeremy tomake some astonishing discoveries and to uncover a crime which had remained buriedfor centuries.

• The engaging adventures of a young art historian: a detective story set in eighteenth-century art and a crime that had remained buried for centuries.• The mysteries underlying a masterpiece by the Venetian painter: Il bacino di SanMarco, kept at the Columbia Museum of Art.

Genuine icons of pop culture, like Marilyn and Coca-Cola, the Beatles were fated to meet up with theworld of comics. For the first time this book docu-

ments the interest that cartoonists, publishers and enthusiastshave shown in their special approach to the universe of comicstrips; a rich and variegated relationship with thousands ofpublications, in every part of the world, and a productionthat continues to the present day. In some stories the Beatlesare the protagonists, in others they make cameo appearances, while others feature their lyrics transformed into comic

strips. Published on the 50th anniversary of their first single (Love Me Do) in earlySeptember 2012, the book celebrates the band with an original approach and honoursthe legend that endures through the years and changing fashions.

• The book features cartoons from all over the world.• Nothing of this kind has ever been published in this form anywhere in the world.• Double colourful poster inside.
