Creativity, innovation and product quality are the key factors to success for small and medium sized companies facing the global

market at the beginning of the third millennium. Nirlab R&D department takes up your own projects to turn them into innovative

    products.

Nirlab (Non Ionizing Radiation LABoratory) has been

meeting the need for innovation and quality, investing in

know-how, equipment and infrastructures, since the early

nineties, so that the company is now able to provide the

following services in the field of radio frequency:

    • calibration (accredited by the Italian National

    Metrological Institute)

    • Electrosmog measurements

    • EMC test house and consultancy services

    • RF measurements

    • Electromagnetic numerical simulations.

Since 1997 Nirlab has been performing research project

relating to electromagnetic pollution and the design of

    electromagnetic field probes.

Clampco Sistemi - Nirlab is now able to provide third parties

    with the following products:

    art. EMSmog general overview

The EMSmog Systemis designed for the measurement of electromagnetic fields generated by both intentionally and non-

    intentionally radiating sources.

The System uses an active antenna (art. EMSFP200 or

art. EMSFP0030H) which transmits to an optical carrier the time

domain electromagnetic signal intercepted by the sensor.

The modulated optical carrier is transferred using a glass optical

fibre to a receiver (art. EMSRC200A) which converts it to an

electrical signal that is made available on a standard RF output

    connector (50 ohm).

The measurement system, made up of the active antenna (art.

    EMSFP200 or art. EMSFP0030H), receiver (art. EMSRC200A)

and spectrum analyser (not supplied by Clampco Sistemi), allows

for maximum operating flexibility when connected to a portable

personal computer and used jointly with the supplied motorized

support (art. EMSAT20RC) for the active antenna that controls its

vertical movement, so as to execute the spatial averages of the

field intensity as required by various regulations.

The use of the glass optical fibre for transfer of the signal from the

active antenna to the optical receiver guarantees greater

measurement repeatability given the scarce influence of the fibre

    itself in the detection chain.

The spectrum analyser is connected to a PC using a GPIB interface

card or a GPIB-USB adaptor supplied with appropriate cable.

The system operates using a dedicated software program(art. EMSSW2100) on a PC.

All the devices in this family comply with the applicable European

Community Directives on Electromagnetic Compatibility 89/336

EEC and Low Voltage (safety) 73/23 EEC + 93/68 EEC.

art. EMSFP2000 electric field active antenna

The sensor is made up of a wide-band omnidirectional biconical

active antenna, sensitive to electrical fields and powered by

rechargeable internal batteries. Using a plastic attachment

anchored to the lower panel, the sensor can be plugged into the

adapter supplied with the motorised support, with the desiredpolarisation. The RF signal intercepted by the antenna is internally

conditioned and then used to modulate an optical carrier. The

modulated optical signal is led to the EMSRC200A receiver with a

glass optical fibre, connected to the sensor using an optical

connector (SC/PC) located on the lower panel of the sensor.

    art. EMSAT20RC motorized rotor

The motorized support, powered by rechargeable internal

batteries, permits automatic vertical movement of the sensor.

The sensor is fixed to a special support placed at the end of a

    moveable support arm.

The support is designed to allow set-up of the sensor according to

three orthogonal directions in space, so as to permit the separate

measurement of three electrical field components.

The passage from one polarisation to another requires manual

    operation by the user.

The support can also be fastened using optional flanges for other

types of antennas, to perform microwave field measurements.

The motorized support is shifted using a serial connection which

joins one of the serial ports of the PC to the receiver, where a

digital optical signal is produced and carried to the motorized

support using a polymeric optical fibre. So as not to disturb the electromagnetic field near the support

itself, the structure is made of dielectric materials, except for the

circuitry, which is in any case concentrated at the base of the

    support.

For the same reason, the serial link connected to the support is

made of optical fibre up to the EMSRC200A optical receiver,

where the data exchange with the PC is reconverted to an

    electronic signal.

There are in addition two movement, non-remote, manual control

buttons on the control panel located at the base of the motorized

    support.

    art. EMSSW2100 automatic acquisition software

The EMSmog system is supplied with an optional software

package developed under Windows, which allows the user to

operate its commands from a personal computer.

Command of the spectrum analyser is effected using a GPIB card,

while the rotor command uses a serial link.

The functions implemented in the package permit manualcommand of rotor movement and spectrum analyser, as well as

    performing measurements using automatic procedures.

    art. EMSAP2000 biconical antenna

AP2000 is a conical dipole antenna for accurate field strength

measurement (60 MHz to 2.5 GHZ).

This device performs accurate RF radiation measurements and

people exposure evaluation near to broadcast stations or next tomobile telephone base stations (such as GSM, DCS and UMTS).

This small size antenna enables frequency selective E-field

strength measurement in a wide frequency range. Total field is

obtained combining the vector components (Ex, Ey, Ez). This can

be done using the software package (art. EMSSW2100) .

The omnidirectional receiving diagram of this dipole antenna

guarantees isotropic behaviour that is independent of results from

    the x,y,z coordinate directions.

Each antenna is delivered with standard individual free-space

calibration certificate (K factor and SWR). Accredited certificate

issued by authorized centres is available on request.

    The following options are available:

    • standard wooden antenna tripod (art. EMSLT12SB). Manual

antenna motion is compatible with art. EMSSW2100

    E-SMOGUARD system

The presence of electromagnetic fields in the environment,

‘Electrosmog’, or electromagnetic pollution, is an increasingly

problematic phenomenon. Guarantees to respect limits set by

legislators might represent an important step towards the

reduction of the problem in terms of public information.

    E-SMOGUARD: AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

In keeping with its preventative approach, the e-smoguard system

is oriented towards the continuous monitoring and supervision of

electromagnetic field levels generated by radio and television

stations, cellular fixed and networks, and other general radio

sources. It monitors the sources themselves and any sensitive area

like schools, hospitals, etc. where it might be wished to know the

    level of electromagnetic fields.

The target of the e-smoguard system is therefore to measure

‘electromagnetic pollution’, using remote units deployedthroughout the territory, creating databases available at a central

unit, and permitting access to this information in different modes,

    through a web interface.

    THE E-SMOGUARD SYSTEM

The features of the e-smoguard system are:

    • configuration of the network with an unlimited number of

remote units, configurable only from the central unit

    • dedicated hardware for communication between remote and

    central unit

    • configuring the remote units with field sensors that are

    appropriate for differing needs

    • easy installation and maintenance

    • acquisition and confirmation of data accessible in

differentiated modes, according to authorization and

    protection criteria

    • proprietary platform for Internet access

    • management and analysis of data.

The remote unit is made up of:

    • a wide band field sensor, selected according to the specific

    program among those available

    • a central data acquisition, processing and transmission line, with parameters pertaining to site identification, the

    establishment of alarm thresholds, measurement

characteristics, and the transmission of definable data only

from the central unit using a password

    • a GSM terminal, complete with antenna for communication

    purposes

    • a system of power supply from the local mains supply, batteries,

or solar panels, so as to render the unit totally independent of

    external power sources

    • an installation kit.

Depending on data measurement and acquisition methods, the

central unit has a storage capacity that varies between two weeks

and sixth months. By using a local RS232 serial port, the user can

also acquire stored data, view the detected field values in real time,

configure/control the remote unit and even update the software.

The Central Unit is made up of:

    • one or more GSM terminals (according to the number of

    remote units)

    • one management unit for the terminals which receives the

transmitted data from the remotes and converts them into a

protocol accepted by the Internet server

    • an internet server designed according to predicted service

volume, upon which the data is organized in both a detailed

and final manner, according to pre-determined tables, and then

made available to different user’s communities

    • dedicated software developed to manage the server,

communication, access to the databases and all other

accessory services that characterise e-smoguard. The minimum

Hardware configuration of the server requires a Pentium-

compatible processor with at least 64 MB of RAM. The

software uses a UNIX platform, with a MySQL database, and a

PHP compiled web server (minimum PHP, 3.0.16).

The Centralized Data Base (DB) is made up of the combination of

data in record format arriving directly from remote units.

The tamper-proof nature of this database is a particularly

important feature and is an essential requisite for users who wish

to guarantee a service that is both objective and probing.

Once received from the remote unit and stored in the database,

the data can no longer be modified. This feature is a guarantee for

regulatory agencies that will possess incontrovertible figures,

operators who are interested in demonstrating the transparency

of their activities and their concern for public problems, and

citizens who will discover in e-smoguard an instrument that

satisfies their need for clear and trustworthy information.

It is possible to allow different access levels to information

    according to uses, as follows:

    • access to all data and connected processing

    • access to stored data from particular remote units and

    connected processing

    • limited access to several processes (typically comprehensive

    values) linked to stored data.

    The most important processes include:

    • setting the measurement methods for field levels detected by

    remote units

    • comparison of field levels with pre-determined threshold levels• alarm generation (with different indicators of seriousness) in

    case signals exceed threshold levels

    • management of events, history, graphic construction statistics,

    etc...
