Nation well set with improved investment climate-
President
President Mulatu
Teshome has disclosed
that with more skilled
labor force and better
investment climate,
Ethiopia will reign as
manufacturing
powerhouse in Africa.
(19.10.2016-WIC)
The President said
tracking on manufacturing
industries is imperative
for the sustainability of
the respective economies
in Africa.
The President today
opened a two-day
conference entitled
"Sustainable
Manufacturing Matters for
Ethiopia and Africa" that
was co-organized by the
Ethiopian Chamber of
Commerce and Sectoral
Associates (ECCSA) and
Pan African Chamber of
Commerce and Industries.
In his opening speech he
indicated that "the
government of Ethiopia
recognizes that
addressing the
manufacturing and
agricultural sectors
through the introduction
of modern technological
innovations is an urgent
issue for the sustained
national development."
“We need to make both
Ethiopia and Africa a hub
for manufacturing; and
this is a good time for us
to push forward and get
more Foreign Direct
Investment,” he stated.
Ethiopia is establishing a
number of industrial
parks through public and
private investments.
However, the President
said manufacturing needs
reliable power, telecom,
services and other
industrial infrastructures
that need to be provided
for local and foreign
investors at one-stop
services in the industrial
parks.
According to Kebour
Ghenna, Executive
Director of Pan African
Chamber of Commerce
and Trade, manufacturers
have an interest in
maintaining a vibrant and
healthy manufacturing
base.
"Manufacturing should be
the bedrock of Africa’s
economy", the Executive
Director said, adding “it
should be the engine of
our economic growth" as it
drives productivity,
provides jobs with better
wages and benefits, and it
stimulates innovation.
Africa faces challenges in
deflationary prices, the
rising costs of regulations,
energy, high tariffs, and
the search for qualified
workers to expand the
manufacturing sector.
“I believe that our efforts
should be directed
towards education and
removing the structural
costs of doing business in
Africa such as lack of
infrastructure and the
unnecessary regulations
and bureaucratic red
tape,” he said.

Reiterating the statement
of the President, State
Minister of Industry
Tadesse Haile said Africa
needs to invest on public
infrastructure
development and improve
the business environment
to improve its industry
sector.
Africa has vibrant and a
dynamic young population
that needs more skill and
technology transfer to
face the challenge ahead,
stressed the State
Minister.
ECCSA President Solomon
Afework on his part said if
Africa’s economy moves
forward in a sustained
manner, the existence of
sustainable manufacturing
sector becomes
mandatory to have a
better share in the world’s
manufacturing output.
He said “much progress
can be attained through
active involvement of the
private sector with a
transformed economic
world outlook."
The conference focuses on
manufacturing related
issues of significant
relevance to Ethiopia and
Africa.(ENA)

Sixth Conference on Climate Change, Development in Africa kicks off in
Addis
Experts drawn from
various sectors are
discussing on the
implications of
implementing Paris
Climate Change
Agreement at Africa’s
premier annual climate
change conference.
(19.10.2016-WIC)
With the objective of
understanding the
implications, challenges
and opportunities of
implementing the Paris
Agreement, the Sixth
Conference on Climate
Change and Development
in Africa (CCDA–VI) kicked
off here in Addis Ababa
today.
Speaking at the opening
session through his
representative, Minister of
Environment, Forest and
Climate Change Dr.
Shiferaw Teklemariam
said since Africa is
vulnerable to climate
change, the Paris
Agreement is a very
important milestone in
addressing the issue.
The Paris Agreement,
congruent with Africa’s
long term vision, agenda
2063 and agenda 2030, is
aimed at decreasing global
average temperature to
two degree Celsius above
pre-industrial level.
“The Agreement may not
be successful and we may
not attain the results
which we are looking for
unless we implement it in
synergy and harmony,
mainstreaming it in other
agendas,” remarked the
Minister.
According to Dr. Shiferaw,
Africa needs to pay
serious attention to the
implementation of the
Agreement as the issue of
climate change is of
paramount importance for
the continent.
Unless we deliver and put
the right implementation
plans in place including
all the means of
implementation, the
financial, capacity
building and all others,
the agreement in itself
may not give us the
desired results, he
cautioned.
“We Africans need to
unite, speak in one voice
and make the
implementation of the
Paris Agreement in such a
way that would help us
achieve our African
Agenda," he added.
Deputy Executive
Secretary and Chief
Economist at ECA Abdalla
Hamdok said, of the 61
countries that have
ratified the Paris
Agreement, 14 are from
Africa, accounting for only
1.06 percent of global
emissions.
The significance of the
Paris Agreement coming
into force rests in the fact
that the Intended
Nationally Determined
Contributions (INDCs)
become legally binding.
"The operationalization of
the agreement is
significant for our
continent in that it brings
forward the need to
mobilize adequate
resources required to
[Servizio News ] 19.10.2016]
6
facilitate meaningful
implementation," the ECA
official said.
The conference comes at a
very opportune moment
in the progress of the
global response to climate
change as it is designed to
contribute to the
development of the
continent's efforts
towards the
implementation of the
Paris Agreement.
The basis of the Paris
Agreement is the Intended
Nationally Determined
Contributions (INDC)
submitted by all parties in
the lead up to COP22 as
their national
contributions to limiting
global greenhouse gas
emissions.
INDCs became Nationally
Determined Contributions
(NDCs) followed by
COP21.

Mebratu Meles, Ethiopian
State Minister of Industry,
said the project comes at
a right time when Ethiopia
is undertaking a massive
socio-economic
transformation.
Meles hailed the project,
saying that it would
increase local
pharmaceutical
manufacturing capacity.
Liu Yu, Economic and
Commercial Counselor at
the Chinese Embassy in
Ethiopia, said the
establishment of this
plant will not only
improve the production
capacity of Ethiopia in
pharmaceutical industry,
but also "bring more

South Sudan markets in Juba reopen after abrupt closure
Shop owners in South
Sudan’s capital, Juba,
have resumed work
following an abrupt
closure on Wednesday,
following false reports of
Salva Kiir’s death on the
social media.
(15.10.2016 – Sudan
Tribune)
“Stay calm, and carry on
normally. There should no
fear. The president had
already come out
yesterday and you saw
him touring the whole
town yesterday. This was
to confirm to the public
that he is alive. What
happened was another
social media hoax”, said
Chienyjiek
He commended various
markets in Juba which
resumed activities on
Wednesday evening after
few hours of abrupt
closure. Traders and
hawkers who had run
away from custom market
have resumed since 5.00
PM local time yesterday
and were selling their
goods normally.
Several markets such as
Konyokonyo, Jebel and
Juba markets have also
resumed operation
according to sources.
Many residents claimed
the run from market on
Wednesday after some
running without asking
the cause. Others
attributed the cause to a
crackdown on money
exchangers by the police.
“I have resumed work
normally today. Yesterday
my shop was closed
because there was
confusion allover. Some
people were running
unnecessarily. If you ask,
no one would give a
definite answer, Deng
Mawien, a trader in
Malakia market told Sudan
Tribune on Thursday.
But while others were
running due to fear
stemming from rumours
about the death of the
president, others were
running away from police
measures banning money
changers on the street in
fulfillment of municipality
order.
Police force launched an
operation to crack down
on U.S. dollar hawkers,
causing them to flee the
market. No gun shot was
fired by the police when
the police carried out the
operation.
Earlier this year, Mayor of
Juba City banned selling
of U.S. dollars on the
street of Juba, and
ordered the police to
crackdown on those
selling dollars. Armed
robbers attacked
Konyokonyo market
SPLA Spokesperson Brig.
Gen Lul Ruai Koang told
journalists that people in
Konyokonyo market fled
when armed robbers
attacked and robbed at
gun point leading to the
closure of the market
yesterday,

He said that 3 robbers
entered the market and
started terrorizing people
using pistols. Two of the
robbers were apprehended
and 1 is still at large. The
two robbers, he said were
later found to be foreign
nationals.
