FOOD WASTAGE AN 'ENORMOUS' GLOBAL CONCERN: G20

Food wasted by consumers

is an enormous economic

problem and nations should

ensure excess food is given

to the hungry instead of

being thrown away,

agriculture ministers from

the Group of 20 leading

countries said.

(11.05.2015 – WIC)

The two-day meeting in

Istanbul has focused on

problems of food security and

nutrition, including the impact

of climate change.

A reduction in the amount of

food wasted would improve

food security, the ministers

said in their final communique.

"We note with great concern

the significant extent of food

loss and waste ... and their

negative consequences for

food security, nutrition, use of

natural resources and the

environment," the ministers

said.

"We highlight this as a global

problem of enormous

economic, environmental and

societal significance."

An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes

of food, or roughly 30 percent

of global production, is lost or

wasted annually, the U.N. Food

and Agriculture Organization

(FAO) said last year. U.N. agencies said this would

easily feed the world's 800

million hungry. In developing

countries, food is lost because

of improper storage or

transportation, while it often

just wasted in rich nations.

"In the developed world, it's

really about reducing the size

of portions. It's about making

sure people understand

precisely when food is no

longer good for human

consumption," U.S. Agriculture

Secretary Tom Vilsack told

Reuters in an interview late on

Thursday ahead of the

meeting.

"I think there's a tendency to

throw things away more

quickly than need be."

Food is the single largest

component of solid waste in

U.S. landfills and is a large

producer of methane gas,

Vilsack said.

In the United States, methane

is the second most prevalent

greenhouse gas emitted from

human activ ity. To fight the

problem of food waste,

countries need better estimates

of the amount of food they

waste, as well as the economic

impact of food loss, the G20

ministers said. (Reuters)

WORLD BANK EXTENDS 350 MILLION USD LOAN TO AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

World Bank Extends 350

Million USD Loan to

Agricultural Sector

Addis Ababa May 08/2015

The World Bank has

extended 350 million USD

loan for financing the

agricultural sector in

Ethiopia.

(11.05.2015 – WIC)

The agreement was signed by

State Minister of Finance and

Economic Development, Ahmed

Shide, and World Bank Country

Director for Ethiopia, Guang Z.

Chen here yesterday.

The loan is meant to transform

the agricultural sector and to

change the livelihood of

farmers in Phase II of the

Growth and Transformation

Plan.

According to Ahmed, the loan

will be used to increase

production and productiv ity of

farmers, technology,

researches, irrigation

development and expansion,

selected seed and market

access.

The project will benefit farmers

of 157 woreda in Amhara,

Oromia, SNNP, Tigray,

Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella

and Harari regional states as

well as Dire Dawa city

administration.

The agreement would give

priority to areas that have the

highest productiv ity potential

thus benefiting over 1.6 million

farmers, the state minister

said.

World Bank Country Director

for Ethiopia, Guang Z. Chen,

said on his part the bank will

continue its support in helping

the country extricate itself from

poverty.

Chen noted that the country

has attained satisfactory results

in the first phase of GTP in

constructing irrigation, feeder

roads, market centers, the

establishment of farmer

groups, strengthening public

agricultural services and

improving farmers’ access to

market.

According to ENA, the

achievements registered by the

country inspired the bank to

support the agriculture sector,

he pointed out.

ETHIOPIAN TOURISM NIGHT HELD SUCCESSFULLY IN BRUSSELS

The Ethiopian Embassy in

Brussels welcomed about

fifty tour operators,

investors, journalists and

other professionals of the

tourism sector on May 5th

at the Euro Press Club here.

(09.05.2015 – WIC)

The Ethiopian Tourism Night

was organized by the Embassy.

This event aimed at presenting

the possibilities and

opportunities that Ethiopia is

endowed to attract more

tourists and visitors to discover

this great land of ancient

culture and unique natural

scenery.

At this occasion, H.E.

Ambassador Teshome Toga

stated that Ethiopia has

changed for the better to bring

value to its multifaceted assets,

ranging from an exceptionally

rich culture and nature to a

dynamic economy and a rapidly

developing infrastructure.

Ambassador Teshome Toga

also updated the attendees on

the recently formulated

Ethiopian tourism development

policy, which has the goal to

accelerate the development of

the sector. A new Ethiopian

Tourism Organization was also

created with the aim of

developing and promoting

touristic activ ities. He

encouraged all Benelux tour

operators to take advantage of

Ethiopia’s tourism potential and

to consider Ethiopia as one of

their destinations. The

Embassy, he further assured, is

here to help them link with

Ethiopian tour operators and

assist them in any possible way

to that end.

As an early and faithful

traveller to Ethiopia, Chris

Aelbrecht, Product Manager of

SENSATIONS, TRAVEL

DESIGNER, also gave his

thoughts about tourism

opportunities in the country.

He talked about one of his

favorite spots in Ethiopia, the

Simien Mountains, which is

endowed with “very impressive

sights”. He warmly invited

other tour operators to include

a v isit of these mountains in

their tour. According to him,

the country developed a lot

since the 1990s. Today,

tourists can enjoy a high

standard of comfort and good

accommodations during their

trips in Ethiopia. One further

strong points of Ethiopian

tourism are the very highly

trained guides, he further

stated.

The colorful event also gave

the guests a chance to discover

the authentic and organic

Ethiopian cuisine, raw and

roasted Ethiopian coffee as well

as several Ethiopian wines and

beers. Live traditional dances

and a fashion show were met

with enthusiasm by the guests,

which were thereby provided

further insights of the

multifaceted potentiel of

Ethiopia as a touristic

destination.

The event was generously

sponsored by Unibra, which is

about to launch Zebidar, a new

beer company in Ethiopia.

CIRCUM'S ETHIOPIA N DANAKIL PROJECT PROVES UP 4.2B TONS OF POTASH

The Chairman and Co-

founder of Circum Minerals

Ltd. Stephen Dattles,

unveils On May 6, 2015

"Circum has proven up a

major world-class potash

project in the Danakil Basin

in Ethiopia. Given its

location on the doorstep of

the Asian Markets this

discovery has the potential

to dramatically change the

dynamics of the potash

industry and become a

future source of significant

supply of potash", PR

Newswire reported.

(09.05.2015 – 2Merkato)

Circum has an exclusive

exploration license to the total

365 square k ilometers area in

the Danakil Basin in North –

Eastern Ethiopia. The company

has obtained the license in

2013 and is financed with the

total equity raised of US 50

million inclusive of share

issuances for acquisition costs

and service agreements.

Brad Mills elaborated that:

"Circum's Danakil Potash

Project, which is located just

600 km's from the major port

facility of Tadjoura, Djibouti on

the Indian Ocean, is expected

to be one of the world's largest

and potentially lowest cost

potash deposits. The current NI

43-101 compliant Mineral

Resource Estimate, which has

tested about 35% of the

license area to a depth of 400

meters, consists of 2.6 billion

tons of Measured and Indicated

material grading, on average,

19.2% KCl (the average of the

Sylv inite layer, Upper and

Lower Carnallite layers and the

lower Kainitite layer) and 1.6

billion tons of Inferred material

grading on average 17.1% KCl.

The geologic estimate of the

endowment of the remaining

65% of the project area is an

additional 7-9 billion tons to a

depth of approximately 800

meters. With a total geologic

endowment projected in the

range of 11-13+ billion tons of

potash rich mineral salts,

Circum's Project in the Danakil

Basin of North-Eastern Ethiopia

will be one of the world's best

and largest undeveloped

potash mineral deposits. Its

uniquely shallow depths and

multiple bed lithology lend

themselves to the development

of a large scale, exceptionally

low capital and low operating

cost in-situ leaching and solar

evaporation process well suited

for the area, given

temperatures on site that

average 40 degrees Celsius

year round."

Phase one of the project is

expected to be completed in

July 2015 to produce 2 million

tons of Muriate of Potash and

0.75 million tons of Sulphate of

Potash a year.

favorable areas for mining,

poultry, as well as diary, fodder

and meat, respectively.

According to him, exploration

activ ities carried out for ten

years with 310 million birr have

confirmed that there is huge

mineral deposit in Bulan

Woreda of Benishangul Gumuz.

This would enable MIDROC

Ethiopia to extract 33.9 tons of

gold, he said.

With respect to agro-

processing, the group is

making preparations to export

65 million eggs and 6 million

k ilogram chicken, it was

indicated.

He stated that MIDROC

Ethiopia has also been working

to supply meat and milk to

both local and foreign markets

by bringing about change in

quantity and quality. Ethiopian Investment Agency

Director-General, Fitsum Arega

said on his part the group that

has been carry ing out diverse

investment works in the

country is exemplary.

According to him, the

government has been providing

incentives to encourage

investors. The director-general

said it is still ready to give all

the necessary support to

developmental investors.

Upon going fully operational,

the projects would enable the

country earn 880 million birr in

taxation and related incomes, it

was learned.

The expansion works will take

up to five years and create

3,000 jobs.

According to ENA, MIDROC

Ethiopia Technology Group

ETHIOPIA: AHADUKES FOOD PRODUCTS FACTORY INA UGURATED

Ahadukes Food Products,

Biscuit and Pasta Factory

which was built with the

cost of 800 million Birr was

inaugurated on May 5,

2015, Ethiopian News

Agency (ENA).

(08.05.2015 – 2Merkato)

The factory is situated in

Bishoftu town of Oromia

Regional State, Ethiopia. It is a

joint investment between

Ahadu PLC and UK-based

square meters of land and has

acquired 36,000 square meters

a year ago for the expansion of

the Factory.

UK Ambassador to Ethiopia,

Greg Dorey said at the

inauguration ceremony UK

investment was minimal few

years back and satisfied at the

way “our investment has taken

off dramatically from this low

case in recent years.”

Although UK investment is

expanding in various sectors,

“food and beverages continues

to be one area in which we

think the UK has a great deal

more to offer to the Ethiopian

market” he said.

Vasari’s prime local investment

was in the Dashen Brewery in

association with TIRET.

GIRO D’ITALIA 2015, IL DIARIO DELL’ETIOPE – ‘ECCE ABISSINO’ ALLA CORSA

ROSA

In occasione del 98° Giro

d'Italia, ilfattoquotidiano.it

ha deciso di seguire la

corsa rosa in modo non

convenzionale: oltre al dato

di cronaca (che sarà

assicurato giornalmente da

una breve nota), per ogni

tappa la penna di Leonardo

Coen ripercorrerà i

chilometri (reali e

immaginari) di Tsgabu

Gebremaryam Grmay, il

primo ciclista etiope della

storia a prendere parte alla

competizione organizzata

da Rcs.

(08.05.2015 – Il Fatto

quotidiano)

Ecce Bombo, il buon corridore

etiope Tsgabu Gebremaryam

oscuro e misterioso “amico

etiope” gli aveva appena

rivelato (“C’aveva ragione

l’etiope…”). Per i soliti ineffabili

incroci del destino, succede che

il ciclista Grmay sia non solo il

primo corridore etiope ad

un Giro d’Italia, ma anche il

primo a partire nella prima

tappa di questa che è

l’edizione numero 98, una

cronometro a squadre di 17,6

chilometri che di disputa lungo

la pista ciclabile Riv iera dei

Fiori da San Lorenzo a Mare e

si conclude sul lungomare Italo

Calv ino di Sanremo.

Tocca, infatti, proprio alla

Lampre l’onore di aprire

le danze, si fa per dire, del

nuovo Giro. Alle 15 e 10 in

punto del 9 maggio 2015, data

storica per l’ignoto (a noi)

mondo ciclistico abissino, la

Lampre sarà la prima delle

ventidue squadre, a far

scattare il

cronometro. Ilragazzo è del 25

agosto 1991 (Ecce Bombo è del

1978). E’ uno scalatore che

però sa filare bene nelle prove

contro il tempo: ha appena

conquistato il titolo

continentale africano. Come i

leggendari fondisti

e mezzofondisti della sua terra,

si allena in altura, d’altra parte

è nato a Macallé, che si trova a

nord dell’Etiopia, oltre quota

duemila. Già, la Macallé

dell’assedio. Del forte Endà

Iesus, in cima ad un collina che

dominava la conca di Macallé,

dove si era asserragliato il

maggiore Giuseppe Galliano,

assieme a 21 ufficiali e 170

soldati italiani, con l’ausilio di

mille ascari: era il gennaio del

1896, Galliano tenne testa per

quattordici giorni a

sessantamila abissini,

comandati da ras Maconnen.

Roma ordinò a Galliano di

abbandonare il forte e di

arrendersi alNegus, che nel

frattempo era giunto da Addis

Adeba. Il maggiore abbandonò

la posizione il 21 gennaio, con

gli onori del nemico. Grmay,

dopo essere stato scozzonato

all’accademia dell’Unione

11

ciclistica svizzera di Aigle, è

diventato professionista nel

2012, entrando a far parte

della formazione Mtn-Qhubeka.

Un anno dopo, il primo

successo: la quinta tappa

delGiro di Taiwan, il 22 marzo

del 2013. E’ campione etiope

sia in linea che a crono,

quest’anno è passato alla

Lampre e ha dimostrato buone

qualità alla Tirreno-Adriatico,

che ha concluso al 51esimo

posto (ottavo, però, dei

giovani). Qui al Giro indossa il

pettoralenumero 93.

Sommando le cifre esce fuori

3: porta bene. Sogna di v incere

una tappa: naturalmente

in salita. Naturalmente da

uomo solo al comando. In sella

alla sua baesklet, la bicicletta,

come si dice in amharico.

SOUTH SUDA N

12 INJURED AS INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE CLASH IN JUBA

Over 10 people were

seriously injured after

recent clashes within the

United Nations protection

of civilians sites in the

South Sudanese capital,

Juba.

(11.05.2015 – Sudan

Tribune)

The incident reportedly

occurred at the UN house in

Jebel, a Juba suburb, between

Haak and Bul communities

after a 17-year old girl from the

Haak clan was impregnated by

a boy from Bul community.

Lang Hoth, the chairman of

youth at the camp, confirmed

the clashes, saying the girl

hailed from Haak clan in

Mayiandit county.

“When the parents of the girl

approach the Bul community,

they failed to settle the dispute

amicable, and then later has

forced the brother to beat the

boy responsible for pregnancy,”

said Hoth.

The boy allegedly responsible

for the pregnancy reportedly

fled the camp, but returned

days later to coordinate an

attack against in-laws.

“We do not know what made

the boy return and mobilise the

other Bul-Nuer to counter

attack the brothers of the

lady,” said Hoth.

He accused the boy of

instigating conflicts between

the two communities.

Meanwhile, another fighting

reportedly occurred in Bentiu

among Bul-Nuer community

who support the armed

opposition faction led by the

country ’s former v ice-president,

Riek Machar and those backing

president Salva Kiir’s

leadership.

While some sections of the Bul-

Nuer accused pro-government

forces of allegedly k illing

civ ilians in Unity state, others

dismissed these claims.

Recently, the South Sudanese

government and the UN

mission in the country agreed

to have those who committed

crimes within the protection of

civ ilian sites tried.

DJIBOUTI

RÉDUCTION DE LA MORTALITÉ MATERNELLE EN AFRIQUE : LE CHEF DE L’ETAT

LANCE LA CARMMA

Le président de la

République, M. Ismail Omar

Guelleh, a donné jeudi

dernier, le coup d’envoi de

la Campagne pour

l’accélération de la

réduction de la mortalité

maternelle en Afrique

(CARMMA). Organisée au

Palais du peuple, la

cérémonie de lancement de

ce vaste programme mis en

œuvre par le gouvernement

djiboutien en partenariat

avec l’Union africaine a eu

lieu en présence de

membres du gouvernement

et des élus du peuple ainsi

que de représentants des

organisations

internationales et du corps

diplomatique accrédité à

Djibouti, ainsi que de

nombreuses personnalités

civiles et militaires.

(10.05.2015 – La Nation)

Tout est dit dans l’ intitulé :

campagne pour l’accélération

de la réduction de la mortalité

maternelle en Afrique. Cette

importante campagne vient

appuyer les efforts déployés

depuis de longues années par

les autorités djiboutiennes,

notamment dans le cadre de

l’Initiative nationale pour le

développement social (INDS)

qui consacre tout un volet à la

recherche de solutions

adéquates pour satisfaire les

exigences en matière de santé

maternelle, infantile et

néonatale inscrites sur la feuille

de route transmise au

gouvernement par le chef de

l’Etat, M. Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Le président Guelleh, en

prenant la parole lors de la

cérémonie de lancement de la

CARMMA, a souligné d’emblée

les avancées enregistrées dans

ce domaine au cours de ces

dernières années, estimant

toutefois que les résultats

escomptés sont loin d’être

atteints.

« Je suis particulièrement

touché après chaque

consultation de rapports sur la

santé maternelle, néonatale et

infantile qui montrent, qu’à

Djibouti, la mortalité

maternelle, bien qu’en

régression, reste toujours

élevée », a-t-il déclaré, avant

d’ajouter que celle-ci « était de

383 pour 100.000 naissances

en 2012 selon la dernière

enquête PAPFAM, contre 749

en 1990 et 546 en 2002.

» Selon le président Ismail

Omar Guelleh, « ce fort taux de

mortalité maternelle » est le

résultat de la combinaison de

plusieurs facteurs dont

« l’inégalité entre les sexes, la

méconnaissance des droits en

santé reproductive des

femmes, la pauvreté, le faible

accès des femmes aux services

de santé de qualité, le taux de

fécondité élevé, les v iolences

sous toutes les formes faites

aux femmes, les mariages

précoces, les grossesses non

désirées avec leur corollaire de

complications… ».

« Rester sans rien faire, c’est

être complice de cette situation

alarmante. Nous ne pouvons

ignorer le fait qu’aujourd’hui

encore, dans notre pays, trop

souvent, donner la v ie est

synonyme de mort pour

14

nombres de nos sœurs, de nos

mères, de nos filles et de nos

épouses », a-t-il martelé.

Soulignons au passage que la

cérémonie de lancement de la

CARMMA a été l’occasion pour

le chef de l’Etat de lancer un

véritable plaidoyer en faveur

des femmes vivant dans les

zones rurales car, a-t-il dit,

« elles sont les plus démunies

et, de facto, les plus

vulnérables. »

Avant de clore son discours, le

président de la République a

formulé le vœu que de « cette

campagne sorte un autre

v isage de notre pays, Djibouti,

car rien ne peut expliquer cette

situation. »

Pour sa part, le ministre de la

Santé a indiqué que l’objectif

majeur de cette campagne est

que ‘’Djibouti devienne un pays

émergent dans les années à

venir, et ceci ne pourra être

atteint qu’avec des citoyens

Djiboutiens en parfait état de

santé et à même d’occuper la

place qui est la leur dans

l’effort de reconstruction du

pays’’.

‘’Dans cette optique, la santé

de la mère et de l’enfant

restera une priorité constante

pour le ministère de la Santé et

au-delà, pour le Gouvernement

Djiboutien, surtout en cette

année charnière des OMDs ‘’ a

martelé le Dr.Kassim Issack. Et

d’ajouter qu’il s’agit avant tout,

‘’de préserver la v ie de celles

qui donnent la v ie, et de ceux

qui constituent l’avenir de la

Nation’’.

Avant de clore, le ministre de la

Santé n’a pas manqué de

remercier l’ensemble de ses

partenaires sectoriels et autres

qui s’impliquent avec son

département, dans la lutte

contre la mortalité maternelle,

néonatale et infantile, sans

oublier les ONGS dont l’UNFD

et sa Présidente, Mme Kadra

Mahmoud Haid qui est devenue

jeudi dernier la marraine de

cette campagne « CARMMA de

Djibouti ».

A titre de rappel, la CARMMA a

été lancée en mai 2009 par

l’Union Africaine, dans le

prolongement des priorités

fixées dans le cadre

d’orientation 2005 de l’UA pour

la promotion de la Santé et des

Droits en matière de la

Sexualité et de Reproduction

en Afrique.
