A distanza di oltre dieci anni dal secondo con-corso per il progetto di ampliamento del Museodel Prado di Madrid, e dall’inizio dei lavori, Ra-fael Moneo conclude nel 2007 una delle sue piùimportanti opere che Re Juan Carlos ha definito,in occasione del discorso di inaugurazione, es-sere l’orgoglio degli spagnoli, poiché espressione

dell’amabile commistione tra antico e moderno,tra neoclassico e contemporaneo. La narrazione del progetto proposta da Moneoripercorre virtualmente e concettualmente dueimportanti tappe della storiografia di questoedificio: la testimonianza dell’epoca Borbonica,espressione elegante di classicità dell’edificiodi Juan De Villanueva, con quella cinquecente-sca del Chiostro dell’adiacente convento de Los Jerónimos di origine Asburgica, ri-costruito nel-la delicata fase di cantiere, all’interno del nuovo

volume di ampliamento.Il Nuovo Prado si colloca alle spalle dell’edificio

storico e si formalizza, denunciando la propriapresenza urbana, in un cubo stereometrico dimattoni, collegato alle sale esistenti medianteun articolato sistema di spazi e funzioni interra-te; di fatto l’immagine del Prado pare non aversubito modificazioni ma nella sostanza la sua ri-funzionalizzazione propone un nuovo uso dellospazio urbano, una variata visione della città edella parte tergale del Museo.Lo spazio di connessione tra il museo e la nuo-

va addizione si traduce in una terrazza-giardinocostituita da diversi parterre, disegnati median-te siepi di bossi geometricamente tagliate e

panche in pietra con percorsi che riconduconoassialmente verso l’abside di Villanueva.

More than ten years after the second com-petition for the project to extend the Museodel Prado in Madrid, and the beginning of the

works, Rafael Moneo concludes in 2007 one ofhis most important works; one that King JuanCarlos defined, on the occasion of the inau-gural speech, as the pride of the Spanish peo-

ple, insofar as it is an expression of amiablecombination of ancient and modern, betweenneoclassical and contemporary . The narrativeof the project proposed by Moneo wants toretrace virtually and conceptually two impor-tant stages in the historiography of this build-ing: the testimony of Bourbon expression ofelegant classicism of Juan De Villanueva, andthat of the sixteenth-century cloister of the ad-

jacent convent of Los Jerónimos, of Hapsburgorigin, and re-built in this delicate work phaseof the newly enlarged space.The New Prado is located behind the his-

toric original building and formalizes itself,denouncing its urban presence, in a stere-ometric cube of bricks, connected to the ex-isting rooms through an articulated systemof underground spaces and functions. In factit seems that the Prado has not undergonechanges, but in substance its re-functionalityproposes a new use of urban space and a var-ied vision of the city and the posterior aspectof the Museum.The space of connecting the museum and thenew addition translates into a garden terraceconsisting of several parterre, designed with

geometrically-cut hedges of boxwood, stonebenches, and pathways that lead back axi-

Il nuovo edificio ed il terrazzo si sostanzianonella presenza urbana lungo Calle Casado deAlisal così come su Ruiz Alarcón, divenendoparte di un assieme la cui coralità è garantitadalla sapiente convivenza che Moneo stabiliscetra sistema consolidato della città e il disegnodello spazio aperto.

Il nuovo ingresso al Museo è posizionato da- vanti alla Puerta de Los Jerónimos ed immet-te direttamente nel «vestibulo» un ambientedi disimpegno, lunghissimo e leggermente insalita, che si chiude sul fondo con una finestraquadrata aperta sull’Orto Botanico di Madrid: èchiara la citazione e l’ omaggio a Velázquez, chenel riquadro sul fondo richiama la porta apertasullo sfondo “de Las Meninas”. Il foyer di in-gresso contiene i servizi principali del museocome l’auditorium da 400 posti, la caffetteria,il ristorante e la libreria sopra alla sala prin-cipale di climatizzazione del piano interrato.

La struttura di questo spazio, che deve copriregrandi luci e sopportare il peso di un tetto, edel giardino pubblico si compone di un porticometallico formato da travi di sezione variabile epilastri con luci fino a 15 metri. Nel vestibolo, il

visitatore può scegliere di visitare le collezionistoriche del Prado, o recarsi nel nuovo volume-cubo dove sono allestite le mostre temporanee,la cerniera svolta da questo collegamento tra ilnuovo e il vecchio edificio è assolto da due pas-saggi coperti con pensiline leggere che immet-tono direttamente nella cosidettta “Basilica” diforma emiciclica che ospita le statue delle Muse

provenienti da Villa Adriana di Tivoli.

L’ampliación incrementa il Museo di circa il cin-quanta per cento delle superfici, per un totalecomplessivo di circa 44.000mq, e consente dicollocare le innumerevoli collezioni e le decinedi capolavori, che per anni sono state dimenti-cate nei magazzini, in sale tecnologicamente eimpiantisticamente sofisticate, dove si trovano

oltre ai laboratori per la conservazione anche,gli uffici e le sale delle stampe.Intorno al chiostro dell’adiacente chiesa de LosJerónimos, Moneo realizza un edificio in mat-toni rossi, uguali a quelli del vecchio Prado, conun portale di bronzo modellato da Cristina Igle-sias. Il cubo è scandito da quattro piani inon-dati dalla luce zenitale, mentre l’antico cortile,che diventa il grande catalizzatore della lucenaturale, viene ricostruito mediante la tecnicadell’anastilosi pietra per pietra, e rimontato nelsuo originario splendore ad una nuova quota.Dopo una prima fase di minuzioso rilievo e

attento smontaggio dei blocchi di granito checomponevano le quattro facciate del “claustro”del XVII secolo, nella migliore tradizione dellavoro di Moneo, si recuperano gli stemmi in-quartati di Castiglia e Aragona che ci indicanoche il luogo era di fondazione reale.Nel cubo di mattoni le sale per le mostre tem-poranee, sono illuminate da un luce naturaleproiettatata dal lucernario posto in sommità, fi-no al basamento del piano terra, attraverso unacorte vetrata che attraversa tutti i livelli, mentrequattro colonne poste agli angoli della grandesala di colore rosso pompeiano sostengono l’in-

tero edificio.

building and terrace will create an urbanpresence along Calle Casado de Alisal, as onRuiz Alarcón, becoming part of an ensemble

whose voice is guaranteed under the wise co-existence that Moneo’s consolidated systemestablished between the city and the designof open space.The new entrance to the museum is located infront of the Puerta de Los Jerónimos and putsthe visitor directly in the ‘vestibulo’, a spaceof passage, long and slightly uphill, which ter-minates at a square window that opens towardthe Botanical Garden of Madrid: the reference

and homage to Velázquez are clear, as the in-set window at the end refers to the open door

in the background of “Las Meninas.”

The foyer contains the principal services ofthe museum, such as the 400-seat auditorium,cafeteria, restaurant, and library above thebasement air- conditioning unit.The structure of this space – which must covera large area and support the weight of the roof– and the public garden comprise a porticoformed by metal beams and pillars up to 15metres in height.In the vestibule, the visitor can choose to visiteither the historic collections of the Prado, orgo to the new space ‘cube’ where the tempo-rary exhibitions are located. The ‘hinging’ that

is carried out by this link between the new andthe old building is represented by two passage-

technique of reconstruction, and remountedin its original splendour to a new level. Aftera first phase of meticulous survey and carefuldismantling of granite blocks that made up thefour facades of the “claustro” of the 17th cen-tury – in the best tradition of work by Moneo– Castile and Aragon coats of arms are recov-ered, thus demonstrating the royal origins ofthe site. In the new “cube of bricks” extension,the temporary exhibition rooms are illumi-nated by a natural skylight projected from theroof to the basement floor, passing through aglass court which crosses all levels. Four col-

umns placed at the corners of the great redPompeian hall support the entire building.
