ROLE AND COMPETENCIES

Italy maintains key positions in the production of CNC machine tools,

robots and automated systems for industry, with companies that export

most of their products to supply production systems to the main

international brands in automotive, aerospace industry, turbines and

machinery for energy, and for a wide range of precision components (from

die and moulds to special equipments).

The development of “machines able to produce other machines” is the most

ambitious target for companies in this field, and the Piacenza’s territory

is well known for the high concentration of manufacturing companies

exporting CNC systems all over the world.

The Mechanical Engineering ME8 track is designed to prepare

mechanical engineers specialized in design, integration and

optimization of CNC machine tools and automated systems for industry.

Laboratory sessions are held at the MUSP Lab (www.musp.it), applied research

lab on Machine Tools and Manufacturing Systems situated at the Piacenza

Technopole (connected, by city bus line #19, to the Railway Station).

Master Degree Thesis and Research

The activities connected to the thesis development can be carried out at MUSP

laboratory. Machines and other equipment are available for the experimental tests.

The master thesis are usually developed in cooperation with companies.

ROLE AND COMPETENCIES

Function

The graduate in Mechanical Engineering – Mobility track will blend in

depth knowledge about mobility systems and related technology with a

scientific and engineering approach in electrical topics too.

The graduate in Mechanical Engineering – Mobility track will be able to

deal with the complexity of mobility systems and their dependence on

the interaction between different critical issues: technology,

management, ethics and policy-making. Hence, the graduate in this

field will cover highly qualified posts in different types of organizations

(including primarily transport operators).

Study plan DD Mat-Mec

A total of 180 credits over three years should be gained to obtain the DD in Mat-Mec

Applicants have to enrol to the M.Sc. in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology or in

Mechanical Engineering and then apply for the admission to the double degree program.

They will be redirected to a special track with extra credits to extend their career over

another additional year.

Students are asked to develop a multidisciplinary graduation thesis covering topics of both

the study programmes (at the end of the second year and during attendance of the third

year) tutored by two professors.

The second degree title will be acquired once further 60 credits will be gained and the first

Master degree title is achieved.

The overall DD study plan is not a new track ad-hoc built for an hybrid professional figure,

but rather a set of accurately tuned exams aimed at:

supplying to a Mechanical Engineer all the fundamental knowledge required for an

additional master degree in Materials Engineering (MEC-MAT study plan)

supplying to a Materials Engineer the knowledge required for an additional master

degree in Mechanical Engineering (MAT-MEC study plan)

Internal Double Degree in BIOMEDICAL and MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

ROLE AND COMPETENCIES

The internal Double Degree in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering aims at capturing

the emerging needs of the Italian and European biomedical industries, that are looking for

a new professional figure able to combine the typical skills of a biomedical engineer with

the key technical competencies of a mechanical engineer.

The integration of the Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering study programmes results

in a solid technical education well matched with a biomedical vision.

The scientific and technical competencies developed by the students attending the

BioMec DD provide them with the opportunity to gain insight into engineering problems

with a unique interdisciplinary approach. Moreover, students will acquire both theoretical

and practical knowledge of the systems and products typical of engineering applications in

the area of biomechanics and biorobotics (such as prosthesis, orthosis, rehabilitation

devices, life support systems, surgical machines, etc.)

The DD programme is open to students that earned a Bachelor Degree

in Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (propaedeutic

track) at PoliMi.

The application is to be presented each September, after obtaining the

Bachelor Degree in the July or September sessions of the same year.

No more than 20 students per year (10 from Mechanical and 10 from

Biomedical Engineering) are admitted.

The average grade achieved in the Bachelor exams is considered to

define the ranking of admitted students (a minimum average grade of

23/30 is required).

The IDD is organized so as to keep the first two years as

close as possible to the native Study Programme (except

for some necessary integrations) and to focus on the topics

of the other one in the third year.

In this way, students, willing to give up the DDI, still have

the possibility to get the Master Degree in their native Study

Programme at the end of the second year.

By the end of the IDD Study Programme, two full MSc

Degrees (in Civil Engineering and in Mechanical

Engineering) are obtained.
