With its protected dune system, the coastal Park of Rimigliano offers the chance to go bathing surrounded by nature. The eye runs over the green
promontory of Piombino, along the windworn shrublandthat lines the beach, and out to the unmistakable blue silhouettes of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago
on the horizon.
THE COASTAL PARK OF RIMIGLIANO
Four natural environments may be observed in the coastal park of Ri-migliano, going inland from the sea:
1 A stretch of beach made up of fine light sand, sloping gently to-wards the sea. The slope continues into the sea, forming a stretch ofshallow water for many metres, ideal for bathing;2 The first dune belt, characterised by pioneer vegetation and othersthat consolidate the soils (ammophlia and agropiretes), these follo-wed by junipers, with examples of both large-fruited juniper and therarer Phoenician juniper;3 A stretch of wetland, the remains of the costal lagoons that lay be-hind the dunes that were reclaimed many years ago by way of an ar-tificial canal. This tends to overflow from time to time, leavingcolonies of common and swamp reeds;4 A second dune belt, now well-consolidated, covered prevalently by the remaining patches of coastal pinewood made upof domestic and maritime pines, these almost totally replaced today by typical formations of Mediterraneanscrub, prevalently holm oak and cork oak, with examples of downy oak that grew under the cover of the pines du-ring their senescent phase.
It is not unusual – particularly in the wooded stretches – to comeacross red squirrels and dormice. Other animals are more elusive, suchas wild boar, wild rabbit, porcupine, badger and fox. Amongst thebranches of the trees, jays and green woodpeckers can be seen.

The foundation of the park of Rimigliano was the first fruit of an in-teresting experience in coordinated planning involving various councils, promoted from the 60’s onwards by the Province of Livorno, one that the councils presentin the Val di Cornia made their own. Since 1975, in fact, naturalparks have taken on great importance, being seen as areas in harmony with their surroun-dings, to be exploited within the limits imposed by their characteri-stics and by the importance of the pre-existing historic, archaeological and natural features that gaverise to them. In such a context Rimigliano was destined to becomean “equipped territorial park”, safeguarding the environment but also allowing use of the coast andwooded areas to tourism. With an eye to this, the Council of SanVincenzo commissioned a report on the natural environment fromthe Natural History Museum of the Province of Livorno, and the first services allowinguse of the park were brought into being (pathways, signposting, picnic areas, toilets and showers). At the same time, works were carried out for the protec-tion of the park area, building a palisade to prevent automobile ac-cess from the via della Principessa to the internal trackways, andwindbreaks to protect the dunes and their characteristic plant life. The last twenty years have seen the services on offer increase, thanks to the construction of public conveniences, showers, andareas equipped for picnics, along with the conversion of existing buildings into accommodation facilities and snack barsand restaurants.
