Ogni mattina passeggiavo nel turbiniodel mercato di Ballarò tra vivaci bancarelle di frutta, verdura, pesce e spezie. Le urla dialettalidei venditori, il chiacchierio della gente, i profumi e il sapore di un fico d'India appena pelato.Era bello entrare in quell'antico cortile e salire lo scalone fino all'appartamento dove vivevi.Improvvisamente, il silenzio. La quiete di quegli ampi spazi arredati con cura. Gli oggettiaccumulati in secoli di gusto e passione per il bello. Camminare su quei pavimenti di anticamaiolica mi dava un'emozione che non so descrivere. Toccare quelle porte così tante volteaperte e chiuse. Spalancare le grandi finestre al tepore del sole di Sicilia. E i tessuti. La caldamorbidezza della lana, la finissima trama delle lenzuola di raso e la freschezza della spugna dicotone. I dettagli del ricamo e delle stampe. Il colore cangiante delle fiandre. Tornerò aPalermo. Rivedrò la bellezza.

The warmth of an off-season sun. The old town. Its ancient and decadent beauty. Noblepalaces, churches, intricate streets where I would lose and find myself. Every morning Iwalked within the excitement of the Ballarò market, among the stands sellingfruits,vegetables,fish and spices. The dialectal shouts of the pitchmen, the people's chatter, thescents and the taste of a peeled prickly pear. It was amazing to finally enter the old courtyardand climb the marble stairs to your apartment. A sudden silence. The quiet of those vast,carefully decorated rooms. Objects and details, collected in centuries of taste and passion forbeauty. Walking on the ancient maiolicas gave me indescribable emotions. Touching thosedecorated doors, so many times opened and closed. Thrusting open the big windows to thewarmth of the Sicilian sun. And the textiles. The warm softness of the wool, the fine textureof the sateen sheets and the freshness of the cotton terry towels. The details of embroideriesand prints. The iridescence of jacquards.
