ni alla teoria della relatività. Poco dopo che fu scritta, Einstein

disse a Philipp Frank di essere sicuro che fosse così semplice che

qualsiasi studente del liceo, come la sua figliastra, sarebbe stato

in grado di comprenderla. Quando Einstein lasciò la stanza, il

professor Frank chiese alla figlia di Einstein se era vero, e lei

rispose che capiva tutto, tranne il significato di «sistema di

coordinate», che, ovviamente, è la nozione tecnica basilare.

The Principle of Relativity, New York, Dover, 1952 (contiene

articoli di Lorentz, Weyl, Minkowski). La maggior parte dei più

importanti saggi di Einstein sulla relatività è raccolta in questo

libro in traduzione inglese. La versione originale del saggio di

Einstein del 1905, pubblicata negli «Annalen der Physik», è as-

solutamente irreperibile. Molte biblioteche di fisica possiedono gli

«Annalen» fino al 1905, ma il «volume di Einstein» (il numero

17) è misteriosamente scomparso. Di conseguenza il saggio

viene letto in traduzioni che generalmente sono opera di fisici. È

molto facile cadere nella trappola di dare per scontato che le

note contenute in queste traduzioni siano di Einstein, mentre in

realtà non lo sono. In The Principle of Relativity, ad

esempio, le note sono state aggiunte dal grande fisico tedesco

Arnold Sommerfeld, il quale stabilì collegamenti con la

letteratura del periodo non noti ad Einstein nel 1905.
