The presentations of the Ambassadors and thefollowing discussions underlined that Italyoperates today in a vastly different andchallenging environment, from the globalizationof markets, technological innovations,environmental protection, terrorism, seriousinequalities in development and massive migrantflows: foreign policy is no longer a separatedimension but an integral and organic part ofinternal politics. <>

Fifth Italian Ambassadors' conference in RomeThe Conference of the 140 Italian Ambassadors around the world was held in Rome, at Palazzo della Farnesina, last July 27-29

In this capacity Commissioner Buttiglione willhandle subjects of major importance such asthe struggle against racism and xenophobia aswell as the thorny question of immigrationflows. The new Commission will take up itsduties on November 1. President Barroso saidthat Minister Buttiglione's widely recognizedskills and his experience on security issueswere especially suited for the important roleof Vice President. Thanking President Barrosofor his support, Buttiglione said that theproblem of illegal immigration and migrantflows are to be faced "firmly but with humanity,through constant dialogue between theimmigrants' countries of origin, their points oftransit as well as with their countries ofdestination." Born in 1948, CommissionerButtiglione studied law in Turin and Rome,where he took his degree with a thesis in thehistory of political doctrines. A celebrated andinternationally known philosophy professorwith a Catholic perspective, Rocco Buttiglioneis also engaged in social ethics and economicsand in May 1994 was awarded an honorarydegree in philosophy at the Catholic Universityof Lublin. Buttiglione lives in Rome, is marriedand the father of four daughters. He is FullProfessor of political science at Saint Pius VUniversity, and is also a member of the editorialboards of numerous Italian and foreign journalsand newspapers. <>

Rome's La SapienzaUniversity, to establish a"Master in Social Sciencesand Humanitarian Affairs” with Israeli andPalestinian universities, was led last July byProf. Dino Guerritore, coordinator ofinternational relations at the university.The visit was intended to clarify measuresneeded to carry out this project, which willinvolve the most important Israeli and Palestinianinstitutes of higher education (Universities ofBeersheba, Haifa and Tel Aviv, the HebrewUniversity of Jerusalem, and the WeizmannInstitute, on the one hand, and the Universitiesof Bethlehem and Hebron, Jerusalem's Al QudsUniversity and the Hebron Polytechnic, on theother side). Agreements were reached on a

timetable for the realization of the project(scheduled to start in October 2005 withpreparations planned for the first half of nextyear), on the composition of the budget to bepresented to UNESCO and on the proposedcurriculum (environment and agriculture,archeology and the conservation of culturalassets, economics, health, humanities), the detailsof which will soon be confirmed. The mostsignificant feature on the agenda will be theresidential programs in Rome which will includeparticipation by some 40 Israeli and Palestinianstudents. <>

ANew trilateral initiative by University of Rome

Italian-Israeli joint research projects can be presented onlyin the research and development areas listed in Article 2

of the Agreement. The projects approved by the Italian and IsraeliAuthorities, which will be selected in the framework of the present Call,will be financed by both the contracting Parties of the Agreement. The

IMajor Israeli investment in Italian agriculture

BSR joins a growing list of major Israelicompanies, such as Teva, Dai Telecomand others, which have found that doingbusiness in Italy is an efficient way topenetrate the 25 countries of the

European market. With government incentives aimed atencouraging development of its southern regions, togetherwith the relatively low cost of labour, Israeli companiesare finding a particularly fertile ground in Italy forpursuing their European ambitions with high profitability.The Italian agricultural sector in particular, with similargeographic and climatic conditions, is proving almosttailor-made for the implementation of Israelitechnological innovation and know-how.

Among the thousandsseeking to take advantage of this opportunityis a growing number of Israeli studentsThis year 337 Israeli students have applied toItalian Universities. The most popularuniversities among the applicants were those ofBologna (51 students), Messina (22 students),Politecnico di Milano (22 students), Padova (20students), Pavia (22 students), La Sapienza(Roma) with 17 students. The most sought-afterfaculties are Medicine, Architecture,

Physiotherapy and Engineering.Israelis seem not to be intimidated by thetemporary language barrier. Italian is taught inIsrael at the Italian Cultural Institute, and throughCenters in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Herzliya and OrYehuda, at all main Universities and throughthe Dante Alighieri Society in Jerusalem. TheItalian Cultural Institute has created specialextensive courses for students intending to enrollin Italian Universities, with a special emphasison verbal skills, reading of academic materialand writing at the appropriate level.Italian language studies take place at the mainuniversities of Israel (Technion, Tel Aviv and

Haifa), to which lecturers are sent directly byItaly's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Courses arealso held in Nazareth, Arara and at Acco'sWestern Galilee College (thanks to an agreementbetween the college and the Italian Institute ofCulture in Haifa). Israeli students choose Italian universitiesI

fter 53 years in the city of Verona, JointCommand South (JCS) closed its doors

on 15 June. Beginning 10 July 1951,Headquarters (HQ) Allied Land ForcesSouthern Europe (LANDSOUTH) wasresponsible for the defence of the Italian North-Eastern sector, in cooperation with other NATOnations. The Alliance's presence in Italy hasbeen upgraded and restructured with theSolbiate Olona HQ, where more than 2000military and civilian personnel from 11 NATOcountries operate under the command ofGeneral Mauro del Vecchio.

In line with the Atlantic Alliance's newchallenges and priorities, in 1995 HQLANDSOUTH embarked upon activities thatonly a short time before would have beeninconceivable.LANDSOUTH began participating in militaryexercises with personnel and equipment fromthe countries of the former Warsaw Pact andN o n - A l i g n e d C o u n t r i e s . I n 1 9 9 6 ,LANDSOUTH deployed its own personnel andequipment to Slovakia, where it conducted anexercise in which former Warsaw Pact nationsparticipated.

On 1 September 1999, the initial reorganizationof the NATO Command Structure arising fromthe Washington Summit continued, and theNATO Headquarters in Verona was renamedJoint Command South (JCS), with a more"international" configuration and a role moretailored to joint operations.In this new role, in 2000 JCS personnelestablished the core of HQ KFOR in Pristina(Kosovo), as well as ensuring a constant presenceof officers and NCOs at HQ SFOR in Sarajevo(Bosnia - Herzegovina). <>

the annual ceremony of the changingof the President of the Rotary Club ofTel Aviv-Yafo.

The Club has a few Italian connections. The newPresident of the club is Italian businessmanReuven Vitale, from the northern city of Biella.Mr. Vitale is a member of the Vitale family,owners of the Ramat Aviv hotel and the formerpublicly quoted textile company Vitalgo. The

new Secretary of the club is Mr. MaurizioPaserman, also Vice President of the Israel-Italy Chamber of Commerce. The club hasdecided this year to join forces with five clubsfrom the city of Milan in a project worth 30,000euro to assist people who cannot receive medicaltreatment due to lack of insurance. During theevening Ambassador Sandro De Bernardin was

elected honorary member of the club,continuing the tradition started by formerAmbassador Giulio Terzi of strongsupport by the Italian Embassy in Israel

for the Rotary club of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. It is an oldRotary tradition for every club to elect a newPresident each year. The Tel Aviv-Yafo club,which will celebrate 70 years in 2005, is one ofthe largest and more established clubs in thecountry. The club is proud of its years ofcommunity work undertaken in variousneighborhoods of Tel Aviv and Yafo. <>

Summer Schedule at the Museum of Italian Jewish ArtItalian Art and Pasta Festival

On August 17–18, for the third time, theMuseum of Italian Jewish Art in Jerusalemheld an Italian art and pasta festival. It was atrue celebration of flavors and arts from Italianculture, with pasta, pizza, and Italian wine andcoffee, side by side with opera, Commediadell’Arte, creative activities for children, andmore. The festival was a great success,attracting thousands of visitors, children andadults alike. The event was made possible by

the sponsorship of the Italian Embassy, Alfa-Romeo, Dai Telecom, and Barilla, as well asthe Jerusalem Foundation and local firms.

This year the Festival included a pasta designcompetition, “Designers Hungering for NewPasta,” in which students from the Faculty ofProduct Design at Hadassah College inJerusalem took part. The first-prize winner,Elyasaf Shweka, created rettilini—a new typeof pasta inspired by the artist M. C. Escher. Theproduction of rettilini leaves no dough residue.The designer was awarded a personal certificateof appreciation by the Ambassador of Italy,Sandro De Bernardin. The award was presentedto Shweka during the Italian soirée thatconcluded the Festival. The winning designers’work will be sent to Barilla in Italy.

A beautiful gala evening devoted entirely toItalian culture took place in the old piazza ofthe Museum of Italian Jewish Art on August 19(Italian Soirée). It included a gourmet dinner, adeluxe Italian artistic program, valuable prizes,and surprises. Among the guests were Jerusalem

mayor Uri Lupolianski, Ambassador SandroDe Bernardin, Italian Vice-consul in JerusalemFabio Sokolowicz, and representatives of thepress and the media. The event was attended byItalian-born Israelis, Italian tourists, and IsraeliItalophiles. The soirée was sponsored by theEmbassy of Italy and the Municipality ofJerusalem, with support from AssicurazioniGenerali, Alfa-Romeo, Dai Telecom, Telit,Yad Kenny Foundation and Alitalia. <>

Jerusalem Film FestivalThe 21st Jerusalem Film Festival, Israel's most

important cinematographic event, took placebetween 8-17 July and included a rich menuof screenings and activities. In the section dedicated to European co-productions, the Italian producer FabrizioMosca gave a lecture at a presentation by theAcademy of European Cinema.

World Youth OrchestraOn 12 June, at a concert in the GivatayimTheatre, the World Youth Chamber Orchestraconcluded its tour of the Middle East, the fruitof cooperation between MusicEuropa, the

Italian Cultural Institute of TelAviv, the Embassy of Italy andthe Italian Consul General inJerusalem. The tour includedconcerts in Givatayim andRamallah as well as in Amman,Jordan.

The orchestra, founded in 2003 by MaestroDamiano Giuranna and intended to promotedialogue and peace through artistic and culturalcooperation, is composed of 52 of the bestyoung musicians from universities, academiesand conservatories in 23 countries.
