La città come Luogo deLLa forma
“Sono sempre le stesse forme a passare,
soltanto lo slancio dell’onda le distingue.”
A. Gide
L’immagine di una città è definita
sempre da esperienze diverse,
stratificazioni che ne descrivono la
storia e ne definiscono il carattere;
architettura e progetto urbano.
La “città nuova” non dovrà
apparire come un frammento
incompiuto di utopia, ma come
integrazione della sua storia, dei
suoi valori civili, delle sue esigenze
e conoscenze all’interno della vita
contemporanea.
Il tentativo di passare dal
modello della città monocentrica a
quello della città policentrica, reso
possibile dalle nuove tecnologie
delle infrastrutture, deve essere
fatto attraverso la ricerca sulla
forma dei luoghi e degli edifici
che sia rappresentativa della loro
identità e della cultura dell’abitare.
Un policentrismo che va dalla scala
regionale a quella metropolitana,
pubblico e privato, portando nelle
periferie la funzione collettiva,
origine dello statuto urbano.
Questo rapporto pone quindi
una riflessione sulla tipizzazione
delle unità residenziali e sulla
morfologia dei luoghi pubblici,
considerazione progettuale che
rimanda al tipo architettonico
dell’Agorà o dell’Acropoli
stabilendo che è proprio nella
piazza che la città si costruisce
come opera d’arte.
5
Nello stato attuale l’architettura
è fatta di oggetti che non
costituiscono città e città come
aggregazione di oggetti. Ma il
senso di essere città, il suo essere
urbs e civitas allo stesso tempo
può nascere solo attraverso
architetture capaci di costituirsi su
relazioni fortemente strutturate, in
grado di formare un fatto urbano
che diventi riferimento ideale e
teatro della vita degli uomini.
La teoria dell’architettura
della città tenta di interpretare
questa tesi riconoscendone i
principi progettuali: progettare e
costruire luoghi della città dotati
di una forte relazione fra le loro
parti, stabilendo connessioni
urbane che si devono esternare in
rapporti tra interno ed esterno, fra
planimetria e volume, ponendosi
come relazioni fondative per
il carattere degli edifici, in
contrapposizione alle architetture
frivole frutto di cosmesi decorative
o scenografiche.
Ogni frammento architettonico
può essere esso stesso una piccola
parte di città e ogni quartiere o
periferia può tornare a rendere
evidente le relazioni compositive
tra le sue architetture, capaci di
consentire variazioni di significati
senza modificare l’unità urbana ed
architettonica.
Il tentativo di continuità è
evidente nelle realtà di metropoli
contemporanee come Berlino,
strutturate da una chiara idea di
città, di un’uniformità di linguaggio
e di modelli architettonici che si
oppongono al frammentato tessuto
metropolitano dilagante nella città
d’oggi.
La ricostruzione della città
Europea e le sue strategie devono
ripartire dalle connessioni tra le
nuove gerarchie e identità urbane
contrapponendosi al modello
funzionalista ed all’indifferenza
architettonica che ha portato alla
crisi della città contemporanea.
L’unità urbana può portare la
consapevolezza di un bisogno
di ridefinire parti di città di
fronte ad un cambiamento dei
modelli attraverso il recupero
di architetture e di pezzi di città
pensati come recupero analogico
delle memorie dei luoghi.
Le esperienze delle periferie della
“Città generica” e dei nonluoghi ci
dicono che le città hanno bisogno
di nuove monumentalità urbane,
di nuovi Fori, dove stabilire ed
istituire relazioni sociali , civiche
e spaziali con la struttura formale
della città, riconoscendo i luoghi
delle istituzioni come centri dello
stare collettivo.

disegnato dallo Jappelli all’altro estremo di via Roma

pedonali e ciclabili.
La città di Chioggia – Sottomarina è
attualmente segnata da episodi formali
antinomici: la forte presenza di un centro
storico, costruito secondo i caratteri urbani ed
architettonici tipici dell’architettura lagunare,
ed una espansione edilizia episodica, priva
di caratterizzazioni formali con modeste
preesistenze, piccoli elementi edificati che si
alternano senza un apparente ordine ed edifici
più alti disposti liberamente sul suolo.
11
“figure” analoghe.
nuove forme e significati.
avere funzioni pubbliche.
commerciali in genere, luogo riconoscibile
segni geometrici, leggendone i percorsi storici
e le direttrici dipanate dal territorio, ancorando
l’impianto urbano sui percorsi storici.
dell’intervento.

IDEA
New art theatreSundsvall, Svezia
2010 progetto G. Furlan
Il progetto per il New Art Theatre
in Sundsvall cerca di costruire un
rapporto efficace con la storia e
l’identità dei luoghi.
Il tema del progetto è l’invenzione
di un luogo. La chiarezza e
l’eloquenza delle forme e dei suoi
elementi, sviluppano un racconto
urbano dove la costruzione di
un’esperienza teatrale e l’invenzione
di una narrazione spaziale, si
articolano nell’evocazione della
strada sacra che porta ad un’acropoli
analoga. Il progetto si carica di
valenze ideali, evocando architetture
lontane, nuove ed antiche.
Dispone gli edifici intorno ad
una grande piazza e il paesaggio
urbano che ne deriva è fatto di
luoghi e di architetture sempre
diverse ma che si assomigliano, di
scarti impercettibili, di vedute e di
scorci dosati con rimando teatrale,
il nuovo rapporto con la città
avviene attraverso il montaggio e
l’accostamento di “frammenti”.
Arrivando dal centro della città
si accede in un foyer che funge
da cerniera alla composizione
urbana, spazio eloquente con una
15
esposizioni. La sua costruzione
di pilastri e copertura ha una sua
fondatezza nella storia della città.
Nel progetto vengono proposti
pezzi di città che si radicano nella
città costruita e nell’immaginario
che essa rimanda. Questa nostra
trascrizione in un’architettura
che non può negare la propria
modernità nel proporre nuove forme
d’uso, si fonda sulla consapevolezza
del valore e la ricchezza delle forme
evocative riprese dalla storia e dal
mito delle città.

19
e religioso.
Nel comporre il progetto ci siamo occupati
dell’atteggiamento che dovrebbe avere il nostro
lavoro di architetti in presenza di zone artigianali
confuse e di valore architettonico discutibile;
dove c’è una profonda assenza dell’architettura;
Bisogna quindi interpretare l’importanza
dell’abitare”.
Nel celebre smlxl Koolhaas, trattando concetti
come fuck contest, Bigness, paesaggio post-
architettonico e piano metropolitano continuo,
ugualmente interessante o priva d'interesse in
progetto urbano e dominata in maniera segreta
teoria urbana.
“La città esiste” affermava Koolhaas in
Delirious in New York che come un architetto
rinascimentale contemporaneo ricolloca al
proprio posto al centro di Manhattan quei
grattacieli smarriti.
25
mutamento fino ad essere riduzione finale
dell'architettura a pura comunicazione.
Le città crescono secondo l'ideologia “del
senza regole” prive di proposte di organizzazioni
urbane convincenti e dominate dall'ossessione
Partenone, neutrali e maestosi, erano
coerenti con il loro carattere, nella società
contemporanea la spinta commerciale,
presupposto di quasi tutti gli edifici odierni,
costringe il progetto dell'edificio a ricorrere
sempre più all'eccentricità ed alla stravaganza.
Nel passato gli architetti scrivevano manifesti
in cui dichiaravano le proprie intenzioni, e
in parte alcuni riuscivano a metterle in atto.
come possano funzionare.
una distanza che non era mai stata così piccola;
del repertorio di tipologie rimangono solo il
grattacielo e la baracca creando così nuovi
quartieri dall'aspetto caotico.
come centri dello stare collettivo.

Luca Baruffaldi
QUAlI SONO lE TRE PAROlE CHIAvE DEllA TUA ARCHITETTURA E PERCHé.
Le parole chiave della mia architettura sono:
Luce.
QUAlI SONO I TUOI MAESTRI? IN CHE MODO TI HANNO INflUENzATO?
spagnolo Alberto Campo Baeza. Come uomo mi
ha insegnato i valori del lavoro duro, dell’umiltà
e della coerenza. Come architetto l’importanza
della Luce, dello Spazio e soprattutto l’essenzialità
dell’architettura.
scalatore togliere movimenti”.
C’è UN ARCHITETTO CON CUI vORRESTI lAvORARE?
nostra storia.
QUAl è Il TUO SETTORE DI SPECIAlIzzAzIONE? ARCHITETTURA, URBANISTICA, AMBIENTE, ETC.
COSA DIffERENzIA UN lAvORO COMMISSIONATO DAllA PUBBlICA AMMINISTRAzIONE DA UNO PRIvATO? COSA TI PIACE DI PIù DI UNO E DEll’AlTRO?

Giovanni Furlan
QUAlI SONO lE TRE PAROlE CHIAvE DEllA TUA ARCHITETTURA E PERCHé.
Da sempre faccio più pensieri che progetti. Spesso
QUAlI SONO I TUOI MAESTRI? IN CHE MODO TI HANNO INflUENzATO?
soluzioni architettoniche. Credo che il Maestro sia la
ricerca senza fine di un vero maestro.
C’è UN ARCHITETTO CON CUI vORRESTI lAvORARE?
QUAl è Il TUO SETTORE DI SPECIAlIzzAzIONE? ARCHITETTURA, URBANISTICA, AMBIENTE, ETC.
spazio. Io mi occupo di questo.
COSA DIffERENzIA UN lAvORO COMMISSIONATO DAllA PUBBlICA AMMINISTRAzIONE DA UNO PRIvATO? COSA TI PIACE DI PIù DI UNO E DEll’AlTRO?
principio costitutivo dell’architettura.

modello replicabile in altri luoghi in condizioni simili.
in atmosfera.

ugualmente, ripetutamente, operando
l’opera architettonica è unica, globale e
permanente nel tempo…).
Nel progetto di restauro la meditazione
sull’essenziale nell’architettura è la
riscoperta al punto zero, il degrè zero
de l’ècriture, all’origine degli elementi
fondamentali.
parli dell’architettura e dall’architettura.
L’intervento ha la propria base non
nella differenza ma nella assomiglianza
e nel principio di coerenza, non nel
contrasto ma nell’imitazione. Imitazione
dell’essenziale naturalmente.
Le rovine, i frammenti, le
sovrapposizioni e tutto quanto si pone
cioè come un problema aperto a risposte
diverse, a tutto quanto “per essere
di nuovo” presuppone una risposta
architettonica, un progetto architettonico.
Il manufatto antico da un lato appare
come una cosa perduta, finita, caduta
appunto in rovina (in alcune parti), isolata,

percezione dello spazio a doppia altezza, esaltando
inoltre le splendide colonnine in ghisa esistenti. Nella
parte sottostante sono stati inseriti i servizi, mentre

destinazione a edificio pubblico presenta
coglierne i motivi e i caratteri generali.

all’interno dell’edificio.
L’altra galleria
All’interno dello stesso corpo di fabbrica,
nell’area centrale sono collocate all’interno
della maglia quattro torri percepibili nello
spazio interno, esse contengono gli archivi,
conservano documenti preziosi che riguardano
“la memoria storica di un determinato ambito
territoriale”. Con la loro altezza e il carattere
costruttivo annunciano all’esterno e alla città
Alberi disposti in modo
geometrico rafforzano la figura della corte che
viene pensata come un grande prato.

A. GideThe image of a city is always defined by dif-ferent experiences, stratifications that de-scribe its history and define its personality; today we design our cities lacking a shared idea plan and the need it arises is to be able to, beyond the shape make-believe, think of the relation between intervention on the city and architecture and urban project. The “new city” won’t have to appear as an in-complete dream fragment, but as integration to its history, its civil values, its needs and knowledge within modern life. The attempt to move from the monocentric city model to the polycentric one, made possible by new infrastructure technologies, has to be made through research on the area and the buildings shape that is representative of their identity and living culture. A polycentrism that goes from the regional to metropolitan scale, in which the relation between the society places and the residential areas allows to rec-ognize in any territorial point a place that has a balanced relation between public and private, bringing into the suburbs the collective func-tion, beginning of the urban statute. This relation therefore asks itself to reflect on the residential units typing and on the public areas morphology, projectual consideration bringing back to the Agorà or Acropolis ar-chitectural type confirming that it’s indeed in the square that the city is built as work of art. In the present state of things the architec-ture is made of objects that don’t create cit-ies and cities as objects aggregation. But the meaning of being a city, its being urbs and civitas at the same time can only be born out of architectures able to build themselves on relations strongly structured, able to create an urban set-up that can become the ideal reference point and theatre to human life. The city architecture theory tries to inter-pret this theory recognizing its projectual principles: projecting and building city ar-eas endowed with a strong relation among their parts, setting urban connection that have to be shown in relations between in-side and outside, between plan and volume, placing themselves as founding relations for the buildings character, in contrast with the flashy architectures born out of decorative or scenographic cosmetics. Each architectural fragment can be itself a small part of the city and each district or suburb can show again the composition relations among its archi-tectures able to allow meaning variations without altering the urban and architectural oneness. The attempt of perpetuity is evident in modern metropolis realities such as Berlin, structured by a clear idea of the city, an evenness of lan-guage and architectural models in contrast with the metropolitan split tissue widespread in modern cities. The European cities re-building and its strategies have to start from connections between the hierarchies and ur-ban identities in contrast with the functional model and the architectural indifference that has led to the modern cities crisis. The urban oneness can lead to a need aware-ness to re-define parts of the city in front of a change in models through the retrievement of architecture and parts of the city thought as analogical retrievement of places. The “Generic city” suburb experiences and of the non-places tell us that the cities need new urban monumentality, new Forums where to set and create social, civil and space relations with the formal structure of the city, recognizing the institution places as centres of living together. Italo Calvino,
in his Invisible Cities, felt that the cities “like the dreams” are made of “desires and fears” and that “the thread of their speech is secret and, their rules absurd, the views illusory and each thing hides another”.

page 8Masterplan saonaraThe Masterplan tries to “spark off” the whole of Saonara linking Villa Valmarana to the park designed by Jappelli to the other extreme of Via Roma of the Villa Sgaravatti, organizing a sys-tem of public and private functions in a com-plex architectural oneness interrelating the el-ements of the city settlement system with the existing driveway road system and bicycle and pedestrian mobility. The project, around the Saonara church real barycentric element of the village, foresees the town hall movement and of some public functions next to the former Borgato School making the church square the public areas village linchpin. The town hall, the church, the new hall dedicat-ed to meetings/shows create a series of public spaces that are together thanks to a clear hier-archy, trying to define an imagery and formal identity to the village of Saonara. The project also foresees the movement of the present sports centres south of the village, putting in their place the new Saonara urban park. Park which will link the eastern part to the western one through some bicycle and pedes-trian mobility “green corridors” which could become the backbone of the new land settle-ment, as well as architectural promenade that will link all the remarkable village places. The “Ex Covisa” has been designed commu-nicating with the place memory, projecting a wide green area containing the nursery world memory traces, turning them into a kind of mu-seum spread in the area, a kind of memory for snippets developing and composing itself in the whole area. Apart from the typical-formal recovery of the most remarkable buildings of the “Ex-Covisa” area a dwelling place has been thought to be developed that could interact in a scenic way with the parks through a big steps residential type opening towards the park, and a type of ad-joining patio cottages which highlight through an important study the relation with the spaces. The Masterplan project of the Saonara centre is
basically characterized by an overriding public city idea for the future: it is indeed in front of a clear vision of public city that every judgement and point of view on urban quality revolves. We are living today in a complex society, dynamic and positively unstable, not able, luckily, to express an overriding aesthetic thought. An urban project like this Masterplan has to look like more and more to a great device able to direct the transformations, without any basic and principle choices being trapped within aesthetic schemes. The project therefore tries to build a new and balanced relation between green areas and built ones, trying to entrust the green areas and public places the solution to congestion and environmental quality problems bringing back mankind and not property speculation to the centre of the public space.
page 10Masterplan soutH Meditrreanean boulevardA new cities policy has to consider the new shaping areas in a unitary picture of coher-ence and integration. In this respect the Mas-terplan project of the south Mediterranean Boulevard refers to the settling system of Sottomarina, both through the use of some road networks already foreseen in the present planning tools, and new relation methods introduced by the project within the urban system that so far hasn’t been able to cre-ate proper space and morphologic relations among the individuals. The project in the whole of its divisions is intended as a unitary offer that rediscovers its links and relations with the context through the design of pub-lic spaces of interconnections like squares, courts, gardens and parks which create links among themselves and the existing through pedestrian and bicycle mobility. The city of Chioggia – Sottomarina is pres-ently marked by antinomy formal events: the strong presence of an old town centre, built according to the urban and architectural characters typical of the lagoon architecture, and an occasional construction growth, lack-ing in formal characterization with modest pre-existences, small built elements which alternate without an ostensible order and higher buildings freely placed on the ground. The project uses some architectural compo-sition principles, such as the architectural type, its being in the urban plan operations, the procedures in language reduction, the feeling of the city to use in the architectural buildings to indicate a line of research in the urban projection field. This operation meth-od creates a kind of critical assembling of similar “shapes”.This way the redundancies are predictable, not only for a rhetoric flaw but especially because the formal field of reference is very restricted and it’s the starting point to test the combi-nation ability of a limited number of shapes repeating themselves and, in their repetition, change in position setting new shapes and meanings. The project organises a system of functions in a complex architectural unity, put-ting in relation the elements of the city settling system with the new road system. The project puts on the new “Boulevard” lead-ing to the seaside, a row of open or closed courtyard buildings which claim the new Sot-tomarina promenade with to the edge two buildings which could have public functions. These courtyard buildings have been thought on a basement in order to articulate in an al-timetric way the recognizable public areas, putting below the basements themselves, but always above the country altitude, the boxes and parking lots. Another urban fact of the new South Medi-terranean Boulevard Masterplan is the “Clo-

diense Forum”, public place of excellence where the life of the new part of the city will take place. In this green area it has been thought to put some public leisure such as restaurants, general businesses, recogniz-able and meeting place for the community and place for shows in the Summer. The big green area is also the only optical cone left from the Mediterranean Boulevard towards the botanical gardens Park which becomes in the project a physical link with the naturalistic element. And it’s indeed with the botanical gardens that the projects is looking for some rela-tions, understands its geometrical signs, reading its historical trails and the main con-duits unravelled by the area, anchoring the urban installation on the historical trails. The project therefore tries to build a new and balanced relation between built and green areas and to the public areas the so-lution to the congestion and environmental quality problems. Other important point is which is the basic of the modern city idea and of this urban project is about the infrastructure and road system. The whole project is based on the new back-bone which becomes South Mediterranean Boulevard where the new district division roads object of the intervention interact and are born.
page 14new art tHeatreThe New Art Theatre project in Sundswall tries to build an efficient relation with the history and identity of the areas. The project theme is the invention of a place, the clarity and elo-quence of the shapes and its elements. They develop an urban tale where the creation of a theatrical experience and the invention of a space narrative articulate in the holy road evocation leading to a similar acropolis. The project is loaded with real worthiness, evok-ing far away, new and ancient architectures. It sets the building around a big square and the urban landscape is therefore made of places and architectures always different but similar, in subtle scraps, in views and measured out patches with theatrical reference, the new re-lation with the city is through the assembling and combination of “snatches”. Arriving from the centre of the city a foyer is reached with the function of a zip to the ur-ban composition, eloquent space with PAGE 15 a big scenic scale resembling the blue hall of the Stockholm town hall in Ragnar Ostberg, but also the big open courtyards of the modern tradition: the Lichtof of the University of Zurich, the Wagner Postsparkasse, the stock exchange in Berlage. Here are the theatre entrances. The theatre architecture art is tied to the the-atrical tradition where a prongs or a porch proceeded the show hall; the image is tied to the great North European architectures where the theatre is still the building which represents a country culture. The scenic tow-er evokes a big lantern, it appears a s a big lighthouse exposed to the cold north winds a lighthouse which observes and it’s observed. From Lubecca to Venice, from Portugal to America, the most beautiful city doors are the union ring between the boundless sea world and the deep city life. And it’s indeed the “Venetian spirit” explain-ing the buildings facing and mirroring in the water of the river, hinting to a Venice of hous-es and palaces that either with opulence or modesty reflecting on the canals. The outside square below the plate is a place of welcome and civil for excellence, allows its passing through and can contain the most various functions taking place in the public areas protected as public shows and exhibi-tions. Its pillar and roofing building has its
own foundation in the city history. In the project parts of the city are suggested embedding in the built city and in the imagi-nary that it resembles. This transcription of ours in an architecture that cannot deny its own modernity in suggesting new shapes of use is based on the awareness of the evoca-tive shapes worthiness and richness taken by history and the city myth.

page 18BUSINESS HEADQUARTERS BUILDING The founding idea is a place invention. The architectural theme is the open-air courtyard building. The building would like to become a new landmark of this are, a civil landmark as the castles used to be, the guard towers, the monasteries which represented the po-litical and religious power. By designing this project we have taken care of the attitude that our job of architects should have facing confused traditional ar-eas and of disputable architectural value; a project which tries to insert the handiwork making it become generative element of a dynamic with urban vocation. The building tries to build a new identity for this part of the Ponte S Nicolò village re-searching a shape and meaning. The project besides defining the business and head-quarters areas that will create the new build-ing faces the theme of the covered Square as centre in redefining this place. The “Civic Square” is what should represent a community: its value beside the functional destination is indeed the one of architectural and urban element, able to build an area with its own recognition and identity. It’s the court-square which confirms the centre and the meaning of the project as a public place. Task of the project has therefore been to ar-ticulate the richness of the spaces and the architectural parties of the complex high-lighting the architectural characteristics and peculiarities reinforcing the strength of the unity in the whole, dictating new architectur-al hierarchies between the parts, hierarchies needed for the construction of a building that is about public quality. This space is thought as a theatre metaphor. Sure enough it is made by elements which resemble the ledges-stages, the gallery-stalls and the stage-backdrop.
page 22urban life sHapes The contemporary city today is a big mutant where there’s a deep lack in architecture; it’s a sum of maverick enclosures where the public areas aren’t related any longer and ex-press a denial of the present mankind living. The architectural project has given up on, in the last few years, the urban city design and the prevailing of the consumer phenomenon on the use one, the rupture between the ter-ritory and the capital become a financial one more than industrial, the overcoming of the management technologies on the industrial production ones are, together with the con-
cept of globalization, the evident causes of the radical transformation of the idea of city into megalopolis. This change has led to forget the meaning of civil architecture. In the contemporary world there’s an estrangement from ideologies considered as false conscience shape: they are indeed the ideas science and the fighting of the fundamentals and only occasionally working, accepting the conditions without having a critical relation with reality and the city of our time, is reductive. It’s therefore necessary to interpret the dis-ciplinary importance of the urban project, of the relations between the built architectures and the architectural worthiness of the space among themselves making the theme of the public space become central subject that the ancient Greeks defined as “basically build-ing in a place with the purpose of living”. In the famous SMLXL Koolhaas, looking into concepts as fuck contest, Bigness, post-architectural landscape and ongoing metro-politan plan, focuses on an autobiographical and brief view of the world mankind getting together through the idea of Generic City. The Asian cities and in particular the Chinese metropolis and Singapore are the new scen-eries towards which the “koolhaasiana” is aimed at for a new city shape. The city identi-ties, the old town are put in a global vision of the urban installations on the ground which shows the irrelevance with reference to the present growth. For Koolhaas the European cities seem to be appointed to an ultraconservative policy prisoner of their historical identity: the read-ing of the relation forms between the city identity and their suburbs made through ex-pressed values through the “critical masses” in the New Yorker skyscrapers, report the impossibility of the old town to dominate the urban growth. The solution is the Ge-neric City: that is the city freed of the centre slavery from the identity straight jacket. The Generic city breaks this vicious circle of de-pendence, it’s only a reflection on today’s and needs and skills, it’s the city without history, it’s big enough for everybody, it’s handy and doesn’t require maintenance, if it gets too small all it does is spreading, if it gets old all it does is destroy and renew it-self, it’s equally interesting or lacking in it in any of its areas, it’s superficial like the Hol-lywood film studio producing a new identity every Monday morning. The main characteristic of the Generic city is the melting away of the blocks grid that made the twentieth-century metropolis tissue, where the structured grid and the urban one now ap-pear as a fragment of the Neoplatonic view. The Piranesian Campo Marzio, the steady field of the No-Stop city and the Super-Sur-face inspire this shape of the Generic city which doesn’t have the urban tissue: “all the Generic Cities are born out of a blank slate: if nothing was there now there they are, if something was there they replaced it. They have to be like that otherwise they would ha an historic character.” Skyscrapers and air-ports are the architectural founding in the Generic City: the airports are destined to become the centre of the Generic Cities and to be interlinked in the planetary urban inlay agglomeration melted in a final design creat-ing a global Generic City. The quality elements of the airports coincide with those of the generic city: extreme neutral-ity, radical open-endedness, the skyscraper is rather the “latest typology, definitive. “It has swallowed all the rest, it can exist anywhere…the towers are not together any longer they are far-between in such a way that they don’t interfere with each other”. The generic city of Koolhaas resembles a Radieuse villa without
urban compositional principles Therefore Koolhaas is wrong about SMLXL after having had the merit of writing as the first one in Delirious in New York the mistake of an illusion resulting in an impasse that doesn’t give up on being necessary. Indeed the Generic city so dedicated to take care of a ruin which seems to escape any form of ur-ban project and secretly ruled by the idea of escape that, melted with the undeniable skill of the theorical city planner of this thought-less city isn’t enough to redeem the whole urban theory. “The city does exist” Koolhaas stated in De-lirious in New York that as a contemporary renaissance architect puts back in its place in the Manhattan centre those lost skyscrapers. Maybe it’s Koolhaas himself the prisoner to set free from a sordid reading of modernity that would be shareable in its general princi-ples if it didn’t come to a theory which dooms that same city made of wonders and not hav-ing any more projects, the Generic City archi-tecture is an endless growth, but also with-out hope of equity and quality. The urban events don’t have anything to do with the city’s inhabitants’history, but have become commercial products, destined in to the short time of the changing until being the final reduction of the architecture to mere communication. The cities grow according to the idea “of the rule-less” without convincing urban organi-zations and ruled by the obsession of the growth. They program their development based on a principle of freedom meant as absence of impediments instead of as a pro-ject, according to the cynic idea of the Gener-ic City where the only public place is the one surveilled and privatized, cities built as stor-age of useless and constipated objects, big-ger and bigger and more and more towards a pointless height. It’s here that the so widespread thesis have failed towards the end of the cities identi-ties, starting from, that is, Koolhaas’s idea itself of the Junk Space as necessary element in order to promote the confusion as an end. It’s difficult to deny that the Generic City, which fights against all otherness, each his-torical identity, each concept of critical rela-tion with a context, isn’t the image that best coincides with the globalization idea that as universal market thought. In the modern city we are living in a time where the gap between the public authorities eco-nomic power, in decline, and the private one, rising, is wider and wider; one the main areas in which this is shown is the city architecture. While in the past the buildings like the Par-thenon, neutral and stately, were coherent with their personality, in the modern society the commercial shove, condition of almost all the modern buildings, forces the building project to turn more and more to the oddity and extravagance. In the past the architects used to write adver-tisements in which they declared their inten-tions, and in part some of them were able to put them to use. Lately though, due to the numer-ous political and cultural changes, the trust in the announcements and the feeling of knowing what one wants to do have totally collapsed. Today at the very most single cities are pro-filed, hoping not so much to elaborate a theory on their development but to be able to understand how they can work. This historic moment of break coincides exactly with the point in which the Asian society has started to grow to an unprec-edented rhythm marking the ultimate city celebration. And it’s indeed in coincidence with this Ge-neric City triumph that our ability to think has come to a halt, and the public sector participa-
54
tion in the cities urban project has lowered. The result we have of this lacking in dogma and the speed in realizing new constructions is that in the Chinese Republic a totally dif-ferent type of city is born, where the metrop-olis and the anti-metropolis find themselves at a distance that had never been so short; of the repertoire of typologies only the sky-scraper and the shack remain thus creating new seemingly chaotic districts. In the southern countries the desert s turned into a city and the city development is more and more projected towards the sea produc-ing an urban language which is more deco-rative and more addressed to pleasure than used to reflect the exchange of experiences and ideas, that is the reason for a city to exist. The “Generic City” experiences and of the Junk Space tell us that the cities need new urban monumentality, new Forums, where to establish and constitute social, civil and space relations with the formal city struc-ture, recognizing the institution places as centres of the public getting together. Task of the urban project is therefore to pro-mote the approval saving the urban identity, looking for the crossing of decisions and forecasting systems which research in the architectural answer quality the ability to internalize opposed procedures of alteration of the city and not occasions of different in-tervention models on it. The urban art is about researching in the city chaos the areas and their peculiarities through a living architecture based on the memory and the discovery and not on the invention. This idea of city on which prevails the relation with nature but where the architecture remains a trick, in which each place is representative of its identity, can be meant as a possible reply to the big metropolitan areas inhabitants’dreams that today are subjected to a dissociation from the natural places and the loss of the possibili-ties to recognize the meaning of the places in which they live their own life.

page 26production HeadQuarters building ar.te.The project suggests a precise and representa-tive rule for the building that wants to be the architectural synthesis of functional and di-mensional needs, trying to find a civil and so-cial identity and an autonomy in the symbolic and reproduction architectural value. The project foresees the construction of a building dedicated to offices and show-rooms in metal carpentry, inserted in be-tween two parts realized with elements precast in concrete, dedicated to stocking and production. The bulk of the steel and glass offices is the most important part of the building sending back to an idea of in-dustrial architecture marking its entry: full height big windows define the rhythm and establish the fronts architecture. The parts dedicated to the production and stocking are built with a precast concrete struc-ture, characterized by windowed panels or totally closed. The project shows the ability to build a place that will be the set scene to the multiple activities that will take place there. The architectural shapes that pinpoint it, sim-ple and essentials, such as the technological suggestion, of the industry that will represent will be made visible through the life and use of the spaces, re-interpreting a modern tradition.

In 1996 Oscar Niemeyer was awarded a prize at the Architectural Biennial with the Golden Lion to his career. In order to celebrate the event, he himself set up the Brazilian pavil-ion and wrote in capital letters the following sentence on a white wall: “O mais importante não é a arquitetura, mas a vida, os amigos e modificar este mundo injusto – The most important thing isn’t the archi-tecture, but life, friends and changing this unfair world – ”.
Oscar Niemeyer
“The architecture is an art matter, a phenom-enon provoking emotion, regardless of the construction problems, regardless them. The Construction is in order to hold up: the Archi-tecture is in order to move”.

“The Architecture isn’t a product of materi-als and functions – neither, by influence, of social conditions – but of the changing spirit of an age which penetrates its social life, its religion, its science, its art”.

page 34stone citYThe project is the invention as a place the architectural theme is the holy road, the ge-ometry regulating the project resembles the space tradition of the city of Bari. The clarity and peremptory of its shapes and elements develops an urban narration, where the in-vention of a tale, the construction of a per-sonal experience articulate in the trail liturgi-cal, lay and religious recollection.A trail where the geometrical abstract modu-lation and the architectural material con-struction fuse and entwine together identi-fying with a constructive knowledge, with a spiritual aspiration: trill vaulting and dome, garden and court, the Mediterranean radi-ance and the oriental arabesque. It’s the identifying of work of art and mood with a constructive and cultural tradition, with its characters of particulars and universal-ity and at the same time the reference to the constitutional figures of the city of Bari, with its compact old town centre peninsula, the volume of the “Complesso di S Nicola”, the modular 19th century development. The road, rhythmed by accesses to the sea, leads to the space of the ecumenical church. It’s a route evoking other roads and trips, look-ing for a grounding in the public memory, in memory of a pilgrimage Europe. The Great Ecumenical Church evokes the big Apulian cathedrals both for size and place, exposed to the sea winds, together with the reception camp, the cult buildings, medita-tion and religion studies, looks like a “stone ship” a door an a landing. The big veered and domed emptiness that characterizes the typical translation and the grafting of the Latin and Greek cross spreads to an early Christian installation curdling memory and meaning of the construction in the attempt to build a celebration area evoking the idea of getting together and that represents, with its neat and essential character a meeting point for the community. The research for an architecture orient of a rebirth of the architectural shape in the mat-ter concreteness rediscovers this way its meaning as theoretical processing able to communicate bliss and amazement to the senses and reason.
page 36what is the architect’s purpose?l.b. The architect has to try to convey the beauty idea, not just by its aesthetic mean-ing but as an essential moment the soul; without beauty, without this experience we do not feel fulfilled. Let’s just think about the downgraded dis-tricts where ongoing social conflicts are fed beauty is absent. For this reason the urban redevelopment is essential, it’s a unique op-portunity that we cannot let us pass by.g.f. The modern architect is the director of the complex changes of the modern city spaces. I believe that the ultimate purpose of an architect’s job is to the emotion but, in order to reach it, we have to go through the reason of things.what are the three architecture key words and why.l.b. My architecture key words are: Light: it’s an immaterial element that chang-es with the passing of time, it lets one per-ceive the passing of the day and the changes it provokes in the building setting back a re-lation with nature that seemed lost. Space. It’s the element within which we live. The Matter sets the shape of the built and empty space. It has to be designed as full as well, both as an individual living space and a public a one as a very beautiful square. When these two words collide in the right di-rection between themselves they generate a third one: emotion.g.f. I’ve always thought more than designed. Often when I create a project I retrieve a thought. The basic idea of my job is based on the project object theme and it’s the result of a process of knowledge of what we want to obtain.who were your teachers? How have they in-fluenced you?l.b. I’ve had many ideal teachers and just a real one, the Spanish Alberto Campo Baeza. As a man he has taught me the real values of hard work, of unity and coherence. As an architect the importance of Light, Space and above all the architecture terseness. In order to reach the core it’s necessary to remove, for this I see myself in a sentence of the carv-er Corona who says “a carver has to remove matter, a writer remove words, a climber re-move movements”.g.f. Relating with teachers I’ve always tried separated the interest for ideas, theories, from the architectural solutions. I believe the Master to be the endless search for a real teacher. is there an architect you would like to work with?l.b. It would be too easy to answer with a well-known architect’s name. I’m indeed interested in acquiring new knowledge and confront my-self with various ways of doing things. I would like to work for example to a great project work-ing with people dealing with various sectors from mine such as a sociologist, a philosopher and why not a musician. g.f. With emperor Adrain and his architects. How do you deal with the relation between history and culture?l.b. It’s essential to know the place before dealing with it, from a historical and environ-mental point of view as each place can reveal emotions or give us important suggestions to tell our story. g.f. The architecture is rarely tolerant with the landscape, it’s often a consequence of deep conflicts and lacerations and I am very careful when it expects to come across as carefully lis-tening and the interpretation of the site. The architecture performs the miracle of offer-ing us of that site a sudden image of that work of art and the result is the appeasement be-tween the area culture and the creation.
I believe the project to be a synthesis process based on the stratification of elements and personal experiences and on a dialogue be-tween feeling and reason. I like to think of the places reality as a daily amazing show.what is your specialization area? architec-ture , urbanism, environment , etc.l.b. The present world is so complex that it’s no longer possible to think of an architect as an individual taking care of everything but of a team specializing in a sector and together they are complementary. g.f. The art of building is the age willingness translated into space, I take care of this.what is the difference between a job commis-sioned by the public authority and by a private one? what do you prefer of each one?l.b. I’ve learned a lot from my customers, I try to give them my most availability in order to follow a common path in which the debate richness sometimes allows to create what at the beginning appeared just as a dream.g.f. Since my projectual process is born out of the need to tell a path start with, in all pro-jects, from the relations with the places and the project theme. The comparison between a house shape and the city one gives an analogy and an ongoing handing over process between mankind’s life in the city and their life in houses both public and private. This reference of the building to the city within each individual urban event is, I be-lieve from my point of view, the architecture built-in principle. To us architects it’s not important to establish the private life or the individual’s movements, but we are interested in building a space where the life development is possible.

Reasons of-ten about economic advantages bring mankind to modify the environment instead of deciding according to the rules of Nature.the energy project Starting from the surveys of the natural characteristics of the site, of the energy re-sources, of the institutional framework and the energy cost, solutions for residential and not-residential areas can be developed, reducing the immission of co2 and GHG in respect of the environment. Starting with the analysis of the area and therefore by the en-vironmental and climate factors the possibil-ity to extract energy from water, soil and air is taken into consideration. Surrounding buildings and works such as roads squares and civic centres possibly at impact zero are designed using the best technologies in order to create handiworks and installations in order to use the least energy quantity to get them working in their entire life cycle.environmental and energy sustainabilityThe installation design for the renewable sources energy production such as traditional or hybrid photovoltaic, vertical micro-propel-ler, biogas and biomasses, geothermal heat, solar cooling with absorber and heat pumps, allows to store energy and use it directly or for the production of heat, cold and acs.The chp trigeneration high efficiency ener-getic station design also powered by renew-able sources allows to get the best energy results also for situations of complete inde-pendence (off-grid). The waste and wastewater recovery follow-ing a proper processing for the reuse inside the created structures both for residential and commercial or farm settings, allow to enhance energy resources waste products.

Massimo baruffaldis’expert opinionNowadays talking about environmental re-spect and of low environmental impact poli-cies is a trend and often one exploited for political purposes. The greenwashing is a re-fined strategy and mankind is able to, even for a marginal advantage, to spoil the envi-ronmental setting and the health of those who will then go and live in that place. I in-deed believe the environment to be the one to have to decide for mankind, not viceversa. Mankind will have to adapt to the place using the easiest to find renewable energy sources and becoming energy producer. The consult-ant role is above all to transmit the client the importance of the sustainable culture, allow-ing him to perceive even the smallest choice advantages for a clever use of the environ-mental resources. Let’s just think about a recovery of the rainwater, the possibility to exploit the roofs for small kitchen gardens growing, the presence of small forests as green lungs of a residential area.

As an extension of the history of the place, the project wants to enhance the area mainly iden-tifying it with from the landscape point of view with the water presence taking shape in a lake around which are placed the houses in har-mony with the natural surrounding elements. The naturalistic area has been studied to leave nature itself the misuse of power on its de-velopment and transformation, through the essences growth, of the grove of reeds, of the shape, where, in projectual phase, the main lines are set.
the projectThe project has an ambitious target that is the one to recover a disused area and in-troduce a sustainable housing model in a naturalistic area (pati foresees park areas in this place) with consequent enhancing of the territory and creation of replicable model in other areas in similar conditions. It’ll be about a residential settlement that on a conceptual level is diametrically opposed to the concept of the traditional division into lots, where tar roads, parking lots and hard geometries have so far transformed our rare natural areas. Regenerating an urban de-graded area means recover it from a neglect-ing and unhealthy condition to turn it into a landscape-naturalistic and environmental highly enhanced area. The recovered area becomes a recreational and leisure place for the society, too.
sustainabilityThe intervention sustainability becomes real through the use of the buildings renew-able energies like for example he geother-
mal heat, the photovoltaic and the thermal solar, so as to create zero consume cell residential areas which are able to produce energy. Other suggested themes and to be later developed, tied to the environment are the rainwater recovery the use of green bed for the roofing of the buildings, the fu-ture inhabitants’possibility to directly grow some house hardens therefore vouching for zero emissions, zero distance for the cost of the food farming, zero pesticides. The for-est planted areas will also become a kind of green lung, partly compensating the co2 emissions in the atmosphere. The water mirror enhancing the settlement also works as a possession for the stronger and stronger meteoric water capture there-fore vouching for a proper autonomy and impermeability of the area.
page 44tHe relation between witH tHe ancientThe architectural restoration projects is based on an accurate stratigraphical analy-sis of the factory, with the knowledge of the processes of construction and transforma-tion that the building has undergone in the course of time and by the observation of the built matter. The used process is the one of careful listen-ing, of the detailed acknowledgement of the essential aspects already embedded in the past architecture and starting from which, again, equally, repeatedly, operating follow-ing its trail. Distinguishing the type of as-sessment of what is essential and anecdotal. (For Viollet-le-Duc the architectural work is unique global and steady in time). In the redevelopment project the meditation on the architectural essential is the point zero rediscovery, the zero degree of the architecture, at the origin of the basic ele-ments. The wall, the space, the place, the re-lation with the existing shapes, the type, the morphology the simple rules of construction. The ultimate target isn’t the silence of the ob-ject but the search for a simple elementary voice but also a true one which speaks of the architecture and from it. The intervention has its own basis not on the difference but on the similarity and the princi-ple coherence. Fake of the essential naturally. The ruins, the fragments, the overlapping and everything which is seen as a problem open to various answers to everything “to be again” supposes an architectural answer, an architectural project. The ancient handiwork on one hand appears as a lost thing, finished, fallen into decay (on some parts), isolated, irrelevant to daily life, on the other hand betrays with evidence the constructive knowledge, that is its being still an architectural lesson.

page 46corinaldi court redevelopMent projectCorinaldi Court is certainly among the most important architectural area complexes that the clients want to enhance through a care-ful redevelopment job with residential pur-poses, therefore contributing to revitalize the small urban centre where it is located. The redevelopment wants to preserve and consolidate the existing building the new houses in an independent indoor structural way PAGE 47 of the handiwork, allowing for a clear reading of the new operation. The type of houses inside the main courtyard building is foreseen with a central patio lighted ze-nithally which constitutes the house centre where the rooms overlook. The side factory body houses, instead, some units enhanced by the creation of lofts allowing a double
height space perception moreover enhanc-ing the existing cast iron small columns. In the area below services have been installed, while above some more usable destinations. On the Barchessa front we experimented the use of bioclimatic greenhouse which allow for the heat from the sun during the winter months and together with renewable ener-gies like the geothermal heat, constitute an interesting theme to develop for the future, that is the use of the state of the art instal-lation technologies for the production of en-ergy in historical buildings. A new building construction is also foreseen inside the complex, which will willingly cre-ate a contrast with the existing buildings and of other historical times, looking for some sort of communication with them, blending with the greenery, also enclosing a tree al-ready present on site.
page 50forMer pirelli factorY redevelopMent projectThe projectual renovation and recovery func-tional intervention aiming at the space mu-seums of the former Pirelli factory develops in two different but interdependent direc-tions. The Complex as a building with its own historical and environmental worthiness and with a new destination as public building shows thematic extensions regarding both the building in itself and the role that it has towards the city.On one hand the project takes into considera-tion the existing handiwork with its space and constructive characteristics between main and secondary places and indoor and out-door spaces, on the other hand puts it inside a wider urban project, able to revitalize thanks to environmental, historical and architectural elements: the park, the waterworks (Pasquale Poccianti’s big water tank) and then the hospi-tal and the square in front of big water tank an entire part of the city of Livorno. The project answers a sharp conviction which sees the renovation as project of ar-chitecture and as language among the dif-ferent parts, in a relation with the present in trying to catch the reasons and the general characteristics. The project, basically, suggests the conserva-tion of the complex in its unity and all the in-terventions of new construction insert in the geometrical design imposed by the factory (the rule of the roofing bays keeps giving an order to the projects), the new interventions, in rein-forcing the unity strength of the togetherness dictate new hierarchies among the parts, the buildings and the urban places to which they refer to, hierarchies necessary for the construc-tion of a building as a public place. The building project also defines a new and important urban public space, an open courtyard towards the park and therefore towards the waterworks, too, Pasquale Poc-cianti’s big water tank. The intervention tries therefore to establish new relations among all the relevant elements which characterize this part of the town and making possible a more breathable unitary urban project able to revitalize, thanks to the presence of envi-ronmental, historical and architectural ele-ments, an entire part of the city of Livorno. On the Carducci boulevard we are welcomed by a wide shelter that beside linking and keeping together the main building (former offices) with lower service corps insisting di-rectly on the boulevard, defines the entrance to the filing Pole a real sheltered square, a public urban space inside the building. The shelter, partly closed by windows, beside linking the three buildings, PAGE 51 also con-tains the main vertical links and welcomes the side galleries building up the project dis-
tributive and compositive axis. Inside, too, air routes and lofts find public spaces which will be able to host exhibi-tions, refreshment stands or meeting points or anyway within a space which resembles a theatrical situation. The complex factory body delimited by the park and by Via Meridian is passage through in a proportional way by two side galleries which distribute the spaces and order the composition of the project areas. The gallery towards Via Meridian goes through the fac-tory body to then become the linking porch to the other one placed in line on the same road. The other gallery after having gone through the building turns into a route that locates and sharpens the courtyard on the side of the park creating a virtual enclosure. Inside the same factory body, in the cen-tral area four indoor perceptible towers are placed, they contain the archives, they pre-serve important documents which are about the “historical memory of a particular place”. With their height and constructive character they tell the outside and the inner city world about civil use and even if in the future the digital filing system should prevail we be-lieve that the simple symbolism of the tow-ers will keep on representing a necessary character for this place. The factory body placed on the Meridian route is distributed by a porch which links the afore-mentioned gallery with the head which clarifies the courtyard space towards the hospital. The porch not only has a functional character but it also defines the new scene front of the court-yard and the park which is welcomed here. The wall hosting the porch is the background towards the Meridian route to the complex fac-tories which are stored in groups of three bays and spaced out by prong elements which tries to build a different rhythm of the building to-wards the road. Another pavilion towards the proportional and the final park on the Meridian route closes the courtyard shape. Trees placed in a geometrical way strengthen the courtyard shape which is thought of as a big meadow.
