    3 INFORMATION ON THE MANUAL

    3.1 AIM OF THE MANUAL

This manual contains all instructions for the use and maintenance of the LOTO L measuringmachine. It is designed mainly for the machine operators as most of the information concerns the

controls and programs that must be run to obtain maximum performance from the equipment; ittherefore aims to instruct the end user re. correct use of the machine. However, as it is mainly ameasuring system, the manual also contains information on thickness and surface measurementsettings for the sole use of maintenance personnel.

    3.2 LIMITS OF THE MANUAL

The equipment consists basically of electronic components designed and produced by themanufacturer. Owing to their complexity and the fact that information concerning their construction isconfidential, they will not be discussed in detail in this manual but treated as machine assembly parts(electronic cards) with their specific reference code. For more detailed information, please contact theservicing center by fax or the manufacturer itself, specifying the characteristics of the equipment, thereason for the request and position held by the applicant within the firm. The servicing center and/or

the manufacturer reserve the right to supply specific documentation at their discretion.

    3.3 STORAGE OF THE MANUAL

This manual is considered an integral part of the machine and must be kept in a clean dry place. Afterconsultation, it must be put away carefully in an easily accessible place near the machine. Generallythe manual is consulted during the first month of operation of the machine; subsequently only thesummary sheet of commands given in enclosure N is used. You should notleave the manual on themachine as it could be easily damaged or used incorrectly by other non-authorized personnel.WARNING: in case of sale or transfer of the machine to other user, make sure that the manualaccompanies the machine always, to permit at the new owner to inquire on the operation and on therelative warnings. The same affair also is valid in case of transfer of the activity without removal of themachine.

    3.4 USER RESPONSIBILITY

Application of the equipment is extremely simple and does not require any particular user precautionsbut the following points must be observed:1 During installation

Correct ROTATION DIRECTIONof the conveyor as described in table A. The LEVEL WITH POSITIONof the measuring machine.

2 The general power supply must be the same value marked on identification plate with accepted

voltage variations within 10%. 4x1.5 mm NPI cable must be used (fire retarding) incompliance with C.E.I. 20-22 standards. The power installed is 1 kW. If the power supply cableis placed at less than 100 cm from power supply cables of other equipment with systemscontrolled by electronic drives, shielded-conductor cable must be used. Provide a cut-off devicefor the measuring machine power supply with 4A fuse protection. The cut-off device must besized for a minimum power of 1 kW.

IS IMPORTANT THAT THE EARTH CONNECTION.3 Surface measurement controls must be performed at least once a day.

    - Check daily that tests C1, C2, C4 and C5 are negative (i.e. that the system is working).Using the sample surface disc, check at least once a day that measurement of the surface iscorrect.

    4 APPLICATION

    4.1 PURPOSE

This equipment has been projected for the surface measurement of finished skins with maximummeasurable thickness of 6,2 mm and maximum surface of 999 dm. Proper data processing allow to

manage the acquired data in order to make the system to be adaptable to the specific workingrequirements and to obtain exact information regarding the skins data. This apparatus is thereforedestined to those firms that they have necessity of measure the surface of the skins having a completeseries of precise data like final result it is on the number that on the surface of each lot of skins.

    4.2 REQUIRED PARTICULARITY

Being the method of skin transversal reading based on the principle of the bright beams infrared raysinterruption placed at 20 mm one by one by the skin, is necessary that the same is able to interrupt thebeam of light. The 'read' surface is, however, produced by the skin projection on the photocell barduring the crossing in the reading group; if, for example, the skin has one side refolded on one self, the relieved area will be small than the real one.

4.3 PERFORMANCEAs it consists basically of a microprocessor-controlled computer, the system is exploited via itssoftware capacities. Features:

Automatic or manual totals with: number of hides and total surface.

Memorization of up to a total of 16 million hides.

Signaling of errors automatically with acoustic warnings and display of messages.

Semiautomatic control of peripherals (printer, display, etc.).

Setting of data relating to the batch of hides to be measured (article, color, etc.).In addition, the system is provided with:

Memory retention in the event of accidental power cut-off

58 key keyboard with liquid crystal 80 character display

High intensity illuminated display of the hide surfaceFor the specific commands and use of the keyboard, refer to chapter Key board use of this manual.

    4.4 APPLICATION LIMITS

The morphological characteristics of the hide are the main limitation to use of this equipment; it ishowever necessary that it is not transparent, that the thickness doesn't overcome the 6 mm aroundand that the rigidity is sufficiently low from allow to the same skin of adapt to the surface of theconveyor. The maximum surface area that can be measured is 999 dm or 99.75 ft.

    4.5 WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The equipment is made of steel coated in dual-component epoxy paint to provide a high level of

resistance to the humidity commonly found inside tanneries. The whole system is constructed so that the electrical parts are protected from the water except forthe printer - here particular care must be taken as water can enter the computer via the paper tear-offdevice.The system is protected toIP40.

    AVOIDUSINGJETSOFWATERNEARTHESYSTEM.

Environmental characteristics:The operating temperature can vary from 0C to 45C.Maximum relative humidity permitted is 80% from 0 to +30C, dropping to 65% at temperaturesbetween +30C and +45C.The maximum altitude at which the system can operate must not exceed 1,500 metres.

    4.6 INCORRECT USE

Correct installation of the system and specific application limit the possibility of incorrect use which inany case is confined to incorrect installation or incorrect programming of the surface calculationparameters (see chapter 7).If the measuring machine is not operating, avoid using the conveyor for depositing hides or wooden

pallets which can weaken the mechanical structure. For the same reason you are advised not tomeasure rigid material weighing over 80 kg and/or thick than 10 mm.

    4.7 CHECK MEASURE

In equipment the machine has furnished a caliber sample realized in cloth polyester with circular formand with surface of 65.0 dm. This caliber is definite "disk sample" since his surface has an excellentstability both at the traction and at the temperature. Is important verify at least once the day the correctness of the machine's measure. Consult thenormative ISO 11646 of the 1993for the procedure of inspection measure.

Considering that the resolution of measure machine is tenth of square decimeter (dm/ 10), the GERELETTRONICA, in each case, suggests to proceed like follows:

    Recall the screen "Q1" and set the measure unit in dm/10 ("C.MEAS.= 5");

Recall the screen "Q2" and set 10 the number of skins for package ("PRE-SELET1= 10");Introduce the disk sample on the left side of the machine. The disk sample must be leanedagainst on the skin introduction bench with the shinier side turned toward the bottom andintroduced under the measure wheels. Even if it doesn't provoke remarkable variations, don't holdback the disk sample; it must be lets to flow during the measurement. Verifies that, during themeasurement of his central portion, doesn't get out of the external profile of the measure front .Check the measure on the display that must be inside the lower limit of 64.6 dm and the superiorone of 65.4 dm (64,6

In addition to its own function, the LOTO box support also houses all the electrical part for powering ofthe LOTO box. In particular the motor speed electronic variator (see enclosure manual), the

emergency command circuit, the line fuses and mains connection terminals. In addition to the powersupply, the support also features the outputs of the cables which run from the LOTO box to theconnector block from which the conveyor sensor and surface reading unit are controlled.

    5.2.3 SURFACE DISPLAY

This is a 4-figure illuminated display which shows the reading of the hide surface that has just beenmeasured and is positioned on board the LOTO box. Two leds indicate whether the measurement is insquare feet or square decimetres. If the measurement is in square decimetres the display will operatewith three figures without decimal point. If the measurement is in square feet, the display will operate with four figures and decimal point in themiddle. The figures after the point indicate the square foot fractions.

    00 = no fraction 25 = Ft 50 = Ft 75 = Ft

THE DISPLAY UNIT CAN WORK IN TWO MODES:

MODE 1: The display starts from zero and reads the area increments instant by instant duringmeasurement. It holds the total for 10 seconds after the end of the measurement andthen resets to zero.

MODE 2: The display is updated at the end of the measurement, each reading being visible untilthe successive measurement is completed.

    5.2.4 PRINTER

Printer: impact alphanumeric type with 40 columns. It acceptsordinary 76 mm wide paper reels. If the paper jams or you need toreplace the ribbon, simply remove the Plexiglas cover by pressing it

towards the front panel in order to release it from the fixed part.it has connected by RS232 to the LOTO box (sees enclosedschemes); the power supply is at 230Vac.

CAUTION: only use ribbons supplied by the manufacturer.

Other types of ribbon can cause breakage of the

printer head. The printer guarantee will not apply in

the case of damage due to the use of unsuitable

ribbons. The printer receives the data through the serial connection RS232 with the LOTO box; the powersupply has obtained by an apposite 230V~ current intake placed on the side of the machine.

IMPORTANT: Not connecting with other apparatuses to the above-said intake of current. For any reference at the maintenance of the printer, see the specificenclosed handbook.

    5.2.5 STAMPING UNIT

It has the purpose to transcribe, on the lower side of the skin, the measured area. The method ofstamping adopted on this model of measuring machine, allows to drive the descent of the piston in anindependent way from the moment of the end measure. All the specific technical above the operationor up the examination of the stamping unit, have reported in the specific enclosed manual.

    6 INSTALLING THE MEASURING MACHINE

    6.1 PACKAGE

The measuring machine construct by GER Elettronica S.r.l., could be sends gets off or alreadyassembles (depends by dimensions), according to the destination and by contractual specific accords.

    6.2 TRANSPORT AND RELOCATION

IMPORTANT: Is recommended that the unloading from the truck has made lifting the machine withcarts elevators introduced in the apposite centers marks from this symbol. When isnecessary shift the machine inside of the building, always proceed and in each case, lifting the machine on the marked supports. If for reasons of space is necessary oftenproceed at the relocation of the machine, is opportune supply to apply the self asystem of support wheels with brake that could be furnished by GER ELETTRONICA.

    6.3 POSITIONING

The measuring machine must be positioned so that there is sufficient space at the outlet to easily

distribute the hides on the pallet. If possible avoid places very near to the drums as the machine couldbe subject to a high level of chemical aggression. Also avoid areas which are sometimes sprayed withwater or near systems which are washed with pressurized water. If this is not possible, extreme caremust be taken not to expose the parts of the measuring machine (especially the printer) to jets ofwater (or other) under pressure (e.g. hydro cleaners). The LOTO box must be positioned beside the measuring machine on the side which is best protectedboth from collisions with forklift trucks and jets of water. Despite a method of reading at modulatedlight allows to filter the light environment, is opportune avoid that the reading bar results illuminated bysolar light or by lamps (neon) that would can, in extreme cases, preclude the functioning of themeasuring machine.

    6.4 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

The main part of the system is the LOTO box where all the signals and power supplies arrive anddepart. Figures H and D show the main connections of the peripherals to the LOTO box. Fit theconnector block to the left of the machine and identify the connection cables by means of thefollowing:1st Connect the receiver bar. Connect the 9-way connector ;2nd Connect the projector bar with the two wires 21 and 19 ;3rd Connect the encoder wheel cable. The aim is to ensure that the magnetic sensor fitted on the

side of the speed detection wheel (figure A ref. 1) transmits to the LOTO box an impulseapproximately every 10 mm of hide feed. The front of the control box features a red led markedCONV which lights up when the metal part of the encoder disk (die-cast inside) is in front of thesensor head. This type of sensor has a maximum detection distance of 2 mm and must thereforebe regulated, to ensure correct operation, at 1 mm from the encoder wheel. The LOTO boxcontrols both impulse edges thus obtaining reading of the photocell bar every 10 mm of hide feed.Fix the position of the sensor by tightening the jam nut and check, by rotating the encoder wheelmanually, that the CONV led blinks regularly.

BLINKINGOFTHISLEDISIMPORTANTFOROPERATIONOFTHEEQUIPMENT. 4th Link up the cable of the stamper. If inserted already into the chain plastic guide-threads, fix the

chain either at the cart of the stamper since a side as at the beam since the other. In the case thatthe chain has already fixed, insert the cable of the stamper after have completely wide (withoutcurves) the chain self.

5th Connect the emergency button cable.6th Connect the motor cable.7th Connect the power supply cable entering the LOTO box support. The electrical connection is

made via the terminals in the support. Check that the machine power supply voltage correspondsto the factory power supply voltage. For connection to the power supply line, use 4x1.5 mm NPIcable. If the distance exceeds 10 meters or if the cable runs alongside other motor power supplycables (especially if controlled by drives) you are advised to use 4x1.5 mm shielded-conductorcable.

Set the MAIN BREAKER to position 1 (A) and press the button of"MAIN PUSH BUTTON" (B): the LOTO box acoustic warning signalemits two brief sounds, the monitor comes on showing the operatingscreen and the 3 leds signaling +24 +12 and +5 should all be on atthe same intensity. Press the black button START MOTOR (C). The

conveyor rotates correctly if the direction shown in figure A isobserved. If the conveyor does not rotate, check the connection withthe emergency button and/or that it is in the released position. If thedirection is wrong, disconnect the power supply line and invert thewires of 2 phases in the motor terminals. At switch-on, the measuringphotocells are automatically tested. If some photocells are wrongly illuminated, the acoustic warningsignal will indicate this by emitting an intermittent sound for approximately 20 seconds. An errormessage will also be automatically displayed generally indicating which photocell is not working. The LOTO box is provided with three 1.5V 14x50 alkaline torch batteries. The purpose of thesebatteries is to retain the data of the hides measured and the working parameters in memory whenthere is a power failure and the equipment cuts out.

VERY IMPORTANT:With the machine and battery switched off (or with the BATTERY button pressed) for at least 30seconds, when the measuring machine is powered, the microprocessor performs a TOTAL RESET ofthe memory and preloads certain parameters which permit the measuring machine to operate. If thebattery remains on (with the equipment switched off) when the measuring machine is powered, themicroprocessor performs a PARTIAL RESET retaining the measurement data and preloadedparameters.

    7.2 PROGRAMMING FRAMES

The Programming frames are text pages, displayed on the alphanumeric display, containing data.Such data can be modified according to the manufacturing needs, or can be of display only.

There are Programming frames, mainly identified with the letter "Q", plus other frames related to thecount modifications of the leather and stamping of the data related to the customer.

To recall a frame it is sufficient to press the letter corresponding to the command to introduce

(example Q) followed by the character related of the page to be displayed (example 1).The information and parameters existing inside each frame can be disposed on various lines of whichonly two of them can be seen per each session, (LCD display 40x2); with the keys and it ispossible to scroll the text disposed on various lines. The presence of lines under or above the current

screen is characterized by the symbol to indicate that there are subsequent lines and by the

symbol to indicate that there are previous lines.

The purpose of the keys and is to modify the field LIST-BOX on which there is the cursor. Thefields LIST-BOX are input characterized by the possibility to choose between values already pre-programmed.

    MAIN MEASURING UNIT: m2 -Y

SECONDARY MEASURING UNIT: ft2 -YFOOTS AREA 30.48 -N

The units of measure can be modified in:

    m2 Square meters

Ft10 Square feet with resolution to the tenth of foot

Ft2 Square feet with resolution to the quarter of foot

    Inch2 Square inches

Dm10 Square decimeters with resolution to the tenth of decimeter

    Dm2 Square decimeters

The programming of Y or N after the unit of measure, allows to enable or not the print the unit ofmeasure on the heading of totals. It is possible to perform exclusively in print phasethe conversion of the measurement performed, in

a unit of measure different from the one programmed by setting the SECONDARY UNIT OF

    MEASURE.

If it is selected an imperial unit of measure (square feet) it is possible to set the size of a side of the

square foot operating on the data FOOTS AREA; the measure can be: 30.48 30.00 28.00. As onthe two previous programming, it is possible to enable or not the print of the value programmed in theheading of the totals.Once the parameter is set, press to exit.

PRESELECTION T1: here it is set the number of the leathers to have the total T1 automatic(from 2

    to 1990).

NOTICE T1: with this variable you set the intervention of the acoustic signaler according to the

number of leathers missing before the closing of the total T1 previously set. if, for example, you set 5, the acoustic signaler shall indicate the end of the total T1 5 measurements beforethe end of the packet.

NUMBER LEATHERS PER LOT: you set a number of leathers ; if it is reached, an acoustic signal

is commanded. The count of the leathers is related to the total T2 and T1.

LAST T1 CLOSED: You set the number of the last packet closed. Normally the numeration isautomatic; it may be useful, with this programming, to start a numeration of the packetdifferent from the automatic one. This programming is not enabled if a total T1 is open.

ZEROING ON T2? Programming Y the execution of the total T2 causes the zeroing of thecounter of the T1; in this way the first total T1 after the total T2, is the n1. Programming N ,the execution of the total T2 does not cause the zeroing of the counter of the T1; in this waythe numbering of the T1 continues in a sequential way up to a maximum of 999999 and thenrestarts from 1.

    8.1.2 BRIGHTNESS TRIMMER

It regulates the contrast of the characters in the alphanumeric display. It is located on the GER132Bcalibration card and can be accessed from the inside of the LOTO box.

    8.1.3 TRIMMER "INTENSITY PROJECTORS"(DIS.ERIF.27)

It stabilizes the voltage of power supply of the bar projectors and allows moreover to adjust the bright

intensity. It is accessible removing the rearward cover of the LOTO box.Normally this trimmer has set at approximately half of his excursion to obtain the correct intensity oflight given out from the bar projectors; nevertheless in case of necessity (very dusty skins) could benecessary increase the intensity rotating this trimmer in clockwise direction.Rotating the trimmer in sense counterclockwise the intensity of light is reduced that could resultnecessary in the measurement of particular skins with thin thickness..

    9 MAINTENANCE

    9.1 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

As with all machines, the measurer may become less efficient with use. For correct measuring, it isvery important to maintain machine efficiency. This chapter aims to instruct the operator so that he can

perform all the controls and work necessary to ensure correct operation of the measuring machine.

    9.1.1 CLEANING THE PHOTOCELL BAR

The beginning of operation of the measuring machine is based on the obscuring of the photocells setunder the threads of the carpet to the passage of the skin. That's why motive therefore is good normproceed to the cleaning of the front of measure once a week with a rag of damp cotton of water. The "P.P." led place in the measure display points out, when it has lit, that at least a photocell resultsdarkened. The flash with this led in absence of skin, generally points out the need to proceed to thecleaning of the bars of reading.

    9.1.2 CONVEYOR ROLLER BEARINGS

These are fitted in the cast iron supports located at the ends of the conveyor rollers. The bearings are

provided with lithium-based grease. In normal working conditions they do not require anymaintenance. They must be re-lubricated only if operating in very damp or particularly dirty conditionsor if they have to work for long periods at high speed. The bearings can be relubricated via a greasehole in the support. For lubrication use a lithium-based grease (SKF LGMT2). The grease must not beinjected too energetically in order not to damage the protections.

    9.1.3 TRANSMISSION CHAIN

It transmits movement from the speed reducer to one of the conveyor rollers. In normal workingconditions, it does not require any maintenance but if necessary suitable aluminium greases can beused for lubrication, e.g. VALIANT Seri ATAZ/0 lubricant.

    9.1.4 DAILY CHECKS

Another important procedure is to perform the daily checks given on the equipment serial numberplate. These consist of five control commands which the computer will carry out to check the followingperipherals:

    C1 = Photocell reading bar.C2 = Alphanumeric printer.C3 = Stamper.C4 = Measuring display.C5 = RAM memory.

    9.1.5 REDUCTION GEAR OF SPEED

The reduction gear has already furnished of lubricating grease. For a possible addition of lubricating, only in the section reduction gear, use a fluid grease to long duration for gears. (greaset IP Atina "0",TOTAL Calindris "O", ESSO FiberGrase 370). Check the level of the grease at least once each sixmonths (around 1000 hours of job).

    9.2 REPAIRS

IMPORTANT: Any repair work must be carried out by specialist or adequately instructed personneland after informing either the manufacturer or servicing centre.

For greater simplicity, work is divided into the following two areas:1) Reading bar2) LOTO box

    9.2.1 READING BAR

Correct operation of the reading bar is indicated by the P.P. led on the measuring display. The ledcomes on to indicate that at least one photocell is receiving sufficient light from the projector bar. In

practice the P.P. led is always off and comes on only when the hide is present over the photocell barduring measurement.

    POSSIBLEFAULTS REMEDIES

The P.P. led on the measuring display isalways on or comes on repeatedly evenwhen there is no hide under the readingbar.

Check that above the bar photocells there are notpieces of skin or other material. Check the threadsof transport of the conveyor.

When the measuring machine is switchedon, a repetitive acoustic signal isgenerated with a photocell fault message.

This happens because at switch-on the obscuredphotocells are automatically checked.1) Check that the conveyor is clean as above.2) Check the power supply voltage; in particular

the +12Vdc between terminals 1 and 2 at therear of the LOTO box.

    3) Check the bar connection cable.

One of the hide measurements isperiodically skipped (display and printing)and the next hide is recorded with asurface increased by a value similar to thesurface of the previous hide.

The problem is on one of the reading bar cards.Repeatedly perform a PARTIAL RESET, switchingthe measuring machine off and then on again.Every time it is switched on, a bar test is performed.Replace the receiver bar card indicated on theLOTO box monitor.

The P.P. led is always on and the hidesare not measured and/or an acoustic alarmsignal is generated with the message***OVERFLOW*** on the alphanumericdisplay.

Check the unit measure on the Q1.

The P.P. led comes on periodically andinexistent hides with very small surfacesare displayed, printed and stamped.

This means that the photocell bar is readingsomething on the conveyor or that one of the barcards is not working. Perform a PARTIAL RESETas above.

The hide passes under the measuring barbut the P.P. led does not come on and thehide is not measured.

    Check the encoder sensor.

Perform a GENERAL RESET: switch themeasuring machine off and press the BATTERYbutton for 30 seconds.

    9.2.2 LOTOBOX

Chapter 4 contains the description of all the parts of the LOTO box which is the main and mostcomplex part of the equipment. To streamline work, the commonest faults are given in the columnPROBLEMS and the commonest solutions in the column REMEDIES. The following five areas aredistinguished:

    1) Printer2) Power supplies3) Keyboard4) Monitor5) Other work

    9.2.2.1 Printer

The printer receives the data through the serial connection RS232 with the LOTO box; the powersupply has obtained from an appropriate currents plug at 230V~ set on the side of the machine.

IMPORTANT: don't connect with other apparatuses to the above-said currents plug. For any reference to the maintenance of the printer, see the manual specific enclosure.

    9.2.2.2 Power supplies

NOTE: The LOTO box is tested for power supply voltages that can vary by 15% with respect to the220V~. This voltage must therefore be checked. It is also important to check that the externalsystem protection connection (PE) is present.

    PROBLEMS CAUSE REMEDIES

The 3 leds on theLOTO front panel are

    off.

    No powersupply.

Check the 2A fuses of the 220V~.

The +24 and +12leds are off.

+24 fuse. Check the 6.3A fuse of the +24.

+12 led is off. Short circuit. Disconnect all the connectors on the back of thebox to identify which terminal has short-circuited.

+5 led is off. +5 fuse. Check the 2A fuse of the +5.

    9.2.2.3 Keyboard

All the alphanumeric keys (i.e. excluding the CNT,SHIFTkeys) are served by the acoustic warningdevice and can be controlled by recalling the screen I00). If you hear a beep when you press a key, it

means that the keyboard is probably working and the problem is elsewhere (GER130M oralphanumeric display).
