Conservation Photography Handbook How to Save the World One Photo at a Time Boyd Norton

Photographers have a skill few possess. Photographs have power. They can be used to save wild places. Now your photos have a purpose and your camera has a cause. This book is a call to action, providing the tools to become a conservation photographer and to help you save wilderness and wildlife everywhere. The author, a former nuclear physicist, has spent over four decades doing just that through his books, magazine articles, and lectures worldwide. He’s been credited with saving, through his photographs and personal activism, millions of acres of wilderness throughout the country and around the world. This book will teach you how to: create images with the power to motivate others; find publications where your photographs have the most impact; work with conservation organizations; use video as an adjunct to your photos; make the best use of lenses; keep your images organized, usable, and safe; deal with the good, the bad, and the ugly; and more.

Summary

Boyd Norton travels extensively in documenting the world’s wild places and environmental issues, a specialty he has pursued as a photographer and writer for more than fortyfive years. Outdoor Photography Magazine U.K. has called him “One of the 40 most influential nature photographers from around the globe.” For most of his photographic and writing career, Norton has devoted a great amount of time to conservation issues and the preservation of wilderness and wildlife worldwide. He played a key role in establishment of several wilderness areas in the Rocky Mountains, new national parks in Alaska, and in the designation of Siberia’s Lake Baikal as a World Heritage Site. Among his many awards, he received commendation from the Environmental Protection Agency, presented by Robert Redford, for his “important, exciting environmental photography and writing.” Currently he is founder of Serengeti Watch, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the vast Serengeti ecosystem and its wildlife from destructive developments.

Lighting on Location Professional Techniques for Portrait Photographers Jeff Dachowski, Carolle Dachowski

Location portraiture offers many advantages. The backgrounds are varied, the surroundings can tell a story about the client, and the setting can help tell the subject’s story. Working on location presents unique challenges, however. Often, the photographer is working in an unfamiliar place in which the lighting is not ideal for portraiture. Light is the very backbone of a good portrait, so the need to manage and modify the light becomes a top priority in the portrait session. The Dachowskis teach you how to harness the light in any scenario—from direct sun, to window light, to fluorescent light, to household lamp light, and even mixedlighting scenarios—to create correct exposures and believable image color. You’ll learn to restrict and enhance the light, add dramatic highlights and shadows to create dimension, and set the mood in the portrait. With these tips, you’ll learn to handle location portrait challenges with ease and confidence.

Summary

Jeff Dachowski quickly fell in love with photography while he was in high school. After pursuing every class related to photography, he attended the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, MA. Jeff, and his wife Carolle Dachowski, opened their first studio in Manchester, NH in 2003, and have seen meteoric growth since the first day. They have a loyal following of clients, which include children and family portraits; they are a buzz in the wedding industry, and they have a growing number of commercial clients. Jeff and Carolle have photographed throughout the Northeast, the Caribbean, and the intermountain west since

Mastering Exposure How Great Photography Begins Mark Chen

In photography, every decision, creative and technical, rides on achieving a good exposure. When shooting portraits or products, landscapes or architecture, we must control our camera’s settings to ensure that just the right amount of light is allowed into the camera. When we strike the right balance in our exposure, we have a full range of tones, from pure white to deep blacks. We have rich visual detail. We have a sense of dimension. The colors and tones and contrast in our images weave the visual story of our subject and scene in a way that visually computes. As a result, we see just the image we strove to create, rendered perfectly in a way that satisfies our creative vision. In this book, Mark Chen shows you how to take full control over the science of exposure, providing you with the foundational skillset you need to maximize your artistic vision.

Black & White Artistry The Creative Photographer's Guide to Interpreting Places and Spaces Chuck Kimmerle

Numerous books on the market teach photographers how to produce a technically sound black & white landscape image. Others expound tips and tricks you can use to enhance the artistry of those images. This book takes a lesstraveled path. Author Chuck Kimmerle teaches photographers who’ve mastered their camera controls to see the possibilities in every landscape. You’ll learn how to identify a scene that lends itself to black & white (and determine which scenes just don’t work), you’ll explore high and lowkey presentations, the effects of various lenses, and how and when to produce straight, graphic, or interpretive presentations of your scene. You’ll also learn how to create “scoreandperformance” RAW image and postproduction pairings that lead to pure mastery in every finished photograph. Armed with the insights in this book, readers will learn to see, conceptualize, and create the black & white landscape images that always seemed out of reach.

Summary

Chuck Kimmerle spent the first twentyfive years in photography as a staff photographer—first, as a newspaper photojournalist, and later as university photographer. Throughout that time, he always enjoyed photographing landscapes. He considered it a way to escape the confines and schedules of work assignments and saw it as a way to keep photography fun. In 2010, he transitioned to shooting landscapes full time. His style is described formalistic, balanced, and reticent and he favors shooting in quiet, empty spaces between hustleandbustle locations. He lives in Casper, WY.

Mastering Composition for Photographers Create Images with Impact Mark Chen

The success of a photograph depends on more than it subject. For big impact, the photographer must finesse every visual element at their disposal to communicate with the viewer. In the right hands, lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curving, radiating, and converging) draw viewers’ eyes through the frame in a predictable manner. Color creates a dynamic rhythm or a balance. Depth of field (the area of sharp focus in the image) tells the viewer what is important in the image—where it is that the eye should settle. Of course, even the positioning of the various elements in the scene (the subject, image color, points of strong tonal contrast, and more) help to establish impact. In this book, Chen describes the compositional “rules” artists have used for centuries to create highimpact work. With each discussion, images are presented that clearly show how the design strategy was used and how it strengthened the photograph

Photograph The Nude Artistic Techniques for Studio and Location Images Peter Bilous

“Artistic nude” is a subgenre of nude photography. In artistic nude images, the human body itself is the subject of the art. In these photographs, the subject typically does not make eye contact with the viewer and there is typically no emotion shown in the subject’s face or through the pose. Peter Bilous teaches you how to choose the right equipment for the job, determine the suitability of a model with a particular body type (athletic, curvy, or thin) for the look you have in mind, and how to light, pose, and compose the image elements for maximum impact. You’ll survey work from the pioneers and contemporary masters in the subgenre and find inspiration for finessing your style or branching out into whole new realms of expression. You’ll also learn special approaches (long exposures, silhouettes, creative lighting, etc.) that will help you create standout work that satisfies your creative vision.

Summary

Peter Bilous was born and raised in Rochester, NY, where he currently resides. Although largely self taught, he did study photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and has also attended several portraiture and nude photography workshops. He is also an instructor and has taught black and white darkroom workshops as well as a location portraiture class. Peter has traveled to many different parts of the United States and to the Caribbean to pursue his photography. Life and Death A Medium's Messages to Help You Overcome Grief and Find Closure Tim Braun, James Van Praagh

Life and Death offers a contemporary look into the life of international medium Tim Braun who bridges this world and the Spirit world, connecting those who have passed over with those they left behind. Tim Braun teaches readers about the power of unconditional love and provides a stepbystep process on how to heal ourselves from grief, forgive ourselves and find closure. Life and Death will take you on a journey, sharing stories of others who have been tormented by the loss of loved ones, broken relationships, and empty last moments. You will see how they found the answers to their questions and how they were able to recover. You will also learn from Tim how searching for these answers, as well as his own personal journey as a medium, has helped countless people escape the torment of their minds. The amazing part about it all is that the months or perhaps even years of grief and emotion can all be solved in a split second. Sometimes we have to take a “leap of faith”. And exactly what does that mean? Leap means “to jump” to “accept eagerly something offered”. And faith means “complete trust and confidence in something we can’t see”. It’s something we can’t really explain. But somehow, it exists because people have found joy again in their lives by getting the answers they were looking for.

A Guide to Mystical France Secrets, Mysteries, Sacred Sites Nick Inman

France is one of the most visited countries in the world – and one of the least known. This book takes you beyond the superficial coverage of conventional guidebooks – history, architecture, etc. – in search of the deeper truths. A Guide to Mystical France takes you deep under the psychic skin of France into the invisible dimensions that our materialistic world does its best to ignore. Science stops at the most interesting questions. To describe, say a painted prehistoric cave as a sacred space used for ritual is to beg more questions than it answers. It is impossible to fully appreciate the cathedral of NotreDame, Mont St Michel, or the alignments of Carnac if you do not understand the reasons these structures were built and they way they have been used over the centuries. The book makes no assumptions. The reader is not required to believe anything. He is merely pointed in the direction of the invisible and the hidden and left to judge for himself. You get much more out of a visit if you look for what isn’t there as well as what is. Only by engaging with such enigmas in an openminded, nonlogical way can we begin to unravel them. This approach also makes sightseeing more satisfying and more meaningful. Covered here are a multitude of fascinating themes: the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Black Virgins, prehistoric cave paintings, labyrinths, leylines, symbolism and sacred geometry, the tarot, etc. The backdrops for the drama includes such legendary places as Chartres, RennesleChateau, churches carved out of the rock and mountain sanctuaries. The cast list, meanwhile, includes Templars, Cathars, mystics, Gurdjieff, King Arthur, Nostradamus and alchemists such as the enigmatic Fulcanelli (who is rumoured to be immortal). The book works in three different ways: 1. One can read the chapters consecutively and follow a narrative thread that explains the secret history and invisible truth of France. 2. Features and boxes make it also a book to dip into and browse if one only has the appetite for short pieces of text. 3. The travel guide section at the end provides region by region suggestions of where to go to discover Mystical France by yourself.

Into a Raging Sea My Life and the Pendleton Rescue Bernie Webber, Michael Tougias

Most people familiar with the name Bernie Webber associate him with the miraculous rescue of 32 men off of the stern of the Pendleton, made famous in the book and movie The Finest Hours. Rescuing 32 sailors from a sinking ship caught in a ferocious winter storm is a dramatic tale, but what made this mission so special is that the boat Bernie skippered that terrible night was a mere 36 feet in length and the waves were almost twice that size! Bernie and crew received the Coast Guard’s coveted Gold Lifesaving Medal, and what they did on that stormy night is regarded as the greatest small boat rescue in history. In Into A Raging Sea, Bernie tells that story, but the book is so much more than that. In these pages you’ll read about rescue attempts that did not turn out well, stories of fishermen from a time long past, rescues done with the bygone technique of the “breeches buoy,” humorous anecdotes, and what Cape Cod and its people meant to Bernie. Into a Raging Sea is a story of sacrifice, bravery, disappointment, and challenges. And in the background of Bernie’s journey is one constant, the sea. from the forward by Michael J. Tougias

Understanding Human Form & Structure Giovanni Civardi

A basic understanding of anatomy is required by any serious artist who wishes to depict the human body effectively: one must be able to not only see the form; but also to understand what it is comprised of. With an indepth study of morphology, proportions, muscles, joints and bone structure; Civardi ultimately breaks down this complex drawing process into simple anatomical sections consisting of the head, torso, arms and legs. Combining his artistic and scientific expertise, he teaches the reader how to depict the human form in the most convincing way.

Summary

Giovanni Civardi was born in Milan in 1947. While training to become a sculptor, portrait artist and illustrator at the Free LifeStudy School of the Accademia di Brera, he also studied medicine and surgery. For over a decade, he worked as an illustrator, producing commissions for newspapers, magazines and book covers. During frequent trips to France and Denmark, Civardi put on oneman exhibitions of his work and pursued his interest in studying the relationship between medical anatomy and the human form as depicted by the artist. His experience gained from teaching anatomy, life drawing and portraiture in schools and institutions over many years has led to the publication of numerous books in which Civardi's experiences are brought into focus.

Pompom Christmas Alistair Macdonald

Building on the pompom magic of Alistair Macdonald’s previous book, this new book seeks to take pompoms to another level altogether with a Christmas theme. It covers a whole range of Christmas decorations and plenty of Christmas characters too. From Rudolph with his red nose, Santa and Mrs Claus, and a ‘frosty’ snowman gift topper to an ingenious bauble, a luxuriant snowflake and a gorgeous festive wreath, there are projects that will appeal to everyone. Some projects, such as the garland, are small and very quick to make; others such as the festive wreath, are a more impressive size and a little more involved, but all can be accomplished by novice and expert pompommers alike! Pompoms are quick and easy to make, and all the designs can be made either with plastic pompom makers, or in the traditional way using cardboard templates. These beautiful projects will appeal to adults of all abilities, and are a great way of engaging children in craftmaking. All the projects can be made with inexpensive yarn, and are a great way of using up scraps in your yarn stash and fabric oddments. With such a variety of lovely projects to choose from, but there is sure to be something for everyone in this great little book.

Sugar Cats Frances McNaughton

Frances has a unique ability to create beautifully crafted models in sugarpaste, which she’s able to break down into simple, achievable steps. Like the sugar dogs, the cats in this book resemble real cats rather than fun cartoon characters, and this will be the book’s USP. A variety of cat types are included, such as a Burman, tabby, Siamese and endless variations of the ‘moggy’ — not to mention kittens, ginger toms, etc. — all in various poses (sleeping, playing, etc.) — and there’s even a tiny sugar mouse and some butterflies. As with her previous books, this book will include a section on the materials needed, and each project will show all the component parts of the finished cat, with instructions on how to construct it. This will be an ideal book for sugarcrafters wishing to create the perfect cake topper for their catloving friends and family.

Summary

Frances McNaughton’s sugarcraft books have become international bestsellers. She has been a tutor and demonstrator for many years, teaching all aspects of sugarcraft to students from beginner to advanced level. She travels all over Europe providing demonstrations and workshops for exhibitions, shops, groups and clubs and has fans in the US, Australia and New Zealand through her online tutorials and sugarcraft products. Frances has made sugarcraft props for the films Notting Hill, Chocolat, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and three of the Harry Potter films.

The narrative includes a section in which Mark passes on the experiences of other from a wide variety of walks of life and occupations, all sharing their views on how feel, connection and softness apply to their respective professions. Those interviewed for this special section include a musician who has written and performed several number one country music hits, a highly decorated helicopter pilot, a movie actor, a college professor, a master carpenter, an artist, and numerous others. What the reader learns by example is how to develop feel, relaxation, connection, and softness in both horses and riders. The methods and techniques Mark demonstrated have been gleaned from decades of work with horses and horse people, as well as while he trained with worldclass aikido masters and martial artists whose lives have been dedicated to developing softness and connection with a partner through feel.

Summary

Mark Rashid (pronounced RASHid) is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark’s clinics center on oneonone work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world. When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses. After years of practice, he has earned a second degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and now teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo. Mark worked full time on ranches for many years gathering herds, managing stock, and training horses. When time permits, he still enjoys working on ranches near his home in Estes Park, Colorado. The Message from the Horse Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling

Every human enters this life and begins a journey. The path traveled is unique to each individual, and for some, the main streets and popular thoroughfares provide all that’s needed to nourish a life well lived—food, fuel, friendship, family. For others, though, there is a desire—in fact, a need—for something more. In the form of a wandering, lyrical, autobiographical narrative, worldrenowned horseman Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling exposes the inner turmoil, the burning questions, the fear, the doubt, and the darkness that pushed him off the roads most traveled in search of answers. In search of meaning. As he reflects on cultures past and his present surroundings, his words linger on visual, sensual, and inspirational clues, bringing his personal experiences alive on the page in emotional detail. His thoughts string together like clicking beads, brilliantly illustrating the passage of time and the interconnectivity of all beings. And ultimately, Hempfling comes to a truth, which for him brings heaven and earth into sharp focus. It is the horses that show him the way.

Summary

A passionate horse lover with a professional background in communications, theatre, and dance, Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling has shaken up the international horse world with thoughtprovoking theories. The basis of his work is consideration for the horse's psyche and communication via a body language that is understood by the horse. His methods have been embraced by thousands of participants at his clinics and demonstrations. He operates a training center in Denmark that offers courses, coaching and seminars.

The Handy Technology Answer Book explains how technology has revolutionized the way people live, work, and play. It covers a broad range of fields, including medicine, mining, buildings, transportation, the military, and agriculture, and how they have been changed by technology. The Handy Anatomy Answer Book Patricia BarnesSvarney, Thomas E. Svarney SummaryWe all have one. The human body. But do we really know all of its parts and how they work? The Handy Anatomy Answer Book is the key to unlocking this door to a wondrous world. Covering all the major body systems—integumentary (skin, hair, etc.), skeletal, muscular, nervous, sensory, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive, and, for good measure, adds chapters on growth and development and how science can help and augment the body—it follows the fascinating maze of organ systems and shows how much the body does routinely just to let you move, breathe, eat, and fight off disease. This handy reference helps make the language of anatomy—as well as physiology and pathology—more understandable and less intimidating. Fascinating trivia, plus serious facts, combine to answer over 1,200 questions about the human body, including What is Gray’s Anatomy? What does it mean to have 20/20 vision? Why is blood sticky? How does exercise affect the heart? What is “gluten intolerance”? Is urine always yellow in color? What are the seven warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease? What is a reflex? How much sleep does an individual need? Can humans use organs from other animals for transplants?
