As Cherubino cowers, terri f ied, i n the closet, the Countorders "Susanna" out , but the Countess forbids it. The Count is convinced that theCountess is hiding a lover i n there. As they argue, they warn each other not to go toofar and create a scandal. Susanna remains behind her screen, horr if ied by thesituat ion. The Countess absolutely refuses to open the closet, so the Count brings herwith him to get something to break the closet open, locking the door behind him.Susanna lets Cherubino out of the closet. In a panic, he escapes through the window, and Susanna hides in the closet.

When the Count and Countess return, she f inall y admits that Cherubino is in thecloset, claiming that i t was just a joke.
