Hidden in the double meaning of the word “after” is the sense of the XXI Triennale International Exposition, which returns to Milan after 20 years. Understood as “after”, it refers to a design that goes beyond the 1900s to look to the future. But in the general acceptation of “notwithstanding” it suggests the ability to brush past the rules and conventions of the past. A parabola of events, under the aegis of the 21st Century. Design After Design, to interpret the changes of the millennium through the evolution of design.

dell’Expo.

Il tutto all’insegna

But the spotlights are focused also on women, long forgotten by the critics, at the centre of an exhibit that recounts feminine creativity through 650 works.Widening the gaze, there is space for the best international projects in the living environment, from the Lebanese capsule house to the teak furnishings in Myanmar. With incursions into theatre, cinema and music, in a melting pot of fl uid contamination. And everything under the sign of fecund approximation, as Gillo Dorfl es teaches, which has crossed two centuries of history without letting itself be entrapped in a single category. Because the tension towards what is new, explains the multi-talented 106-year-old, “is contrary to every form of dogmatism”. And the fi nal sense of art is to “glorify disorder.” FD

FD Vent'anni fa l'ultima Triennale. Se la ricorda?Ho partecipato come semplice spettatore. In realtà è sempre stata molto attrattiva.

FD Che ruolo possono avere i giovani?

BRINGING A LARGE PUBLIC TO UNDERSTAND DESIGN, INTERPRETING THE CHANGES OF THE MILLENNIUM. PRESIDENT CLAUDIO DE ALBERTIS TELLS US ABOUT THE XXI INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

After 20 years the International Exhibition of the Milan Triennale returns to the Lombard capital. With the title 21st Century. Design After Design, the event will examine the changes of the millennium starting with the evolution of design. And until September 12, will bring to 19 different locations a well-developed programme of exhibits, festivals and conferences treating such topics as globalisation, the economic crisis, the question of gender and the confl ict between tradition and innovation. “We do not offer answers, but we help people to ask questions: today the world is experiencing a complicated moment and design creativity, especially in Italy, helps us to cope with the diffi culties,” explains the President of the Triennale, Claudio De Albertis.FD Why have you decided to bring the Exposition to the entire city?We have received a lot from Milan and we wanted to pay back the city by organising events everywhere. Many connected events were organised for Expo, the Salone del Mobile had its Fuorisalone, and so we followed the same wake. Furthermore we wanted to make design and architecture less elitist. With an exhibit lasting two or three months we will attract about 30,000 visitors on average, while if we displayed a Caravaggio painting we would receive 300,000. Our effort is aimed at attracting a vast public.

FD The last Triennale was 20 years ago. Do you remember it?I took part as a simple visitor. Being a construction engineer and coming from a family of builders, it represented a window on innovation, research and design for me. A place in which to receive stimulus. FD Has Milan changed since then?In reality it has always been very attractive. The city has some incredible assets: it is a centre for training, university, research, culture, tourism, fashion and design. But in the past we were used to complaining and, instead of defending its strong points, we concentrated our attention on what was missing. Only recently, with Expo 2015 in particular, did this change.FD What effect has the Universal Exhibition had?Big events are not positive or negative in themselves, but are fruitful if they light up sparks around them that generate development. A project was organised to attract 21 million visitors and the citizens appreciated this.FD How will the site get new life? There will be fi ve exhibits, in two pavilions at the end of the Cardo, that take into consideration a new concept of metropolis and new expressive forms such as street art. Then we will open a planetary garden, a bookshop and two restaurants.FD You have said that the Lombard capital, if it wishes to have a future, must become a contemporary point of convergences. How?By enhancing the resources that exist. As far as culture is concerned, we need to support those who produce culture and build a network of relevant places creating specifi c paths.FD What role may young people have? The phenomenon of migration benefi ts the towns of Northern Italy. Here young people are increasing and are not afraid of novelty and are able to get beyond the usual rules. A fresh attitude that is opposed to the conservative attitude of the past. On the other hand, the history of the liveliest metropolises is made of revolutions that start from below and from the new generations. One of the topics to address is how to keep them here.FD What inheritance do you hope to leave behind with this Triennale?I hope that the renewed enthusiasm for Milan will remain.

A catturare subito l’attenzione

MAY2016FD

The word "after" summarises the meaning of the XXI Triennale di Milano and of the fi ve exhibitions under the City after the city umbrella, that make use, until September 12, of some of the Expo Milano 2015 spaces. The meaning of the term is twofold: it can be meant as "after" in the temporal sense, implying that the artistic focus of the exhibition goes beyond the twentieth century, or as "in spite of" referring to a design that makes its way in an antagonistic manner "like in some science fi ction novels," says project director Pierluigi Nicolin "portraying a near future that seems to magnify our present." Underpinning this whole refl ection is the desire to go beyond the current city, with an eye to street art and nomad design. The event is a good opportunity to reopen two pavilions that were protagonists of the last Expo Milano 2015: the Future food district and the Auditorium, near the entrance square to the Cardo. The layout adopted for both areas, approximately 2,500 m² each, identifi es new areas through some exedras formed by curved walls. Trait d'union of the series of exhibitions is the planetary kitchen garden that connects the two buildings, in the form of parterre that extends for about 4,000 m². Cultivations takes place on a plot formed by more than 100 beds, raised 50 cm from the concrete pavement. The side that faces the river hosts three small restaurants, and a large meeting/bookroom offers various texts related to the topics covered. The visitor's attention is immediately captured by a giant video installation on the fl oor, with various images about travelling population proposed along with famous paintings by Delacroix and Gericault, the two leading representatives of Romantic painting. Satellite photos and videos induce even more the viewer to identify with the works. At the centre of the fi rst exhibition, Landscape urbanism ( 1 ), curated by Gaia Piccarolo, there is an aspiration to trespass into nature, a common thread of urban imagination in the 21th century. In this trend it is possible to detect the symptoms of a new sensibility, which perceives urban space as part of a larger natural ecosystem. Thus, a large video projection composes a hybrid fresco made of representations and prefi gurations, panoramic views and recent projects, creating a landscape that evokes new horizons.

famosi graffi tisti come Os Gemeos, Blu, Nunca, Run fi no ai contemporanei 2501, Momo, Remed, Elian.

People in Motion ( 2 )deals with the issue of migration along two lines: the journey as a movement of cultures and the idea that refugee camps are a prelude to permanent settlements, able to refute the idea of urban fabric as a stable organism. The exhibition is divided into three sections. The fi rst is dedicated to maps created by Alighiero Boetti, embroidered by Afghan women, which here reaffi rm the concept of exchange between different peoples in a world without borders. The second section zooms in on exodus dramas, with combinations with famous works such as The Raft of the Medusa by Gericault. The third section proposes three refugee camps in Africa and the Middle East conceived by curator Michele Nastasi as "empowering strategies for millions of refugees around the world." In order to better analyse the metropolitan dynamics the visitor is led through the path created by Nina Bassoli for Street Art. The layout proposed by Bruce Mau Design is a collage of images that is created in real time through the interaction with visitors. The environment made up of urban sounds, created for the occasion by Carlo Boccadoro, hosts two large curved walls. The images are signed by famous graffi ti artists such as Os Gemeos, Blu, Nunca and Run and include contemporary artists like 2501, Momo, Remed and Elian. Expanded housing proposes a selection of furniture products of various scale, made by Italian and international companies. According to the curator, Matteo Vercelloni, the pieces go beyond indoor spaces, alluding "to the idea of outdoor living in different landscapes or in nature itself." The concept: overcoming the dichotomy between crafts and industry. The exhibition features some historical pieces like those created by Joe Colombo and Bruno Munari, still on the market as a testimonial of the surprising vitality of certain projects.

FD

Finally, the Urban orchard ( 3 ) installation includes 25 tables which exhibit reproductions, design cues and small objects, as if this was an open archive available to travellers. They illustrate the seven key topics of the exhibition, as curator Maite Garcia Sanchis points out: "The use and re-appropriation of public spaces, the return to kitchen gardens as a resource in times of crisis, the transformation of private gardens in productive spaces, the extension of cultivations to roofs, self-management, the networking of local communities and, fi nally, urban agriculture as a resource for the construction of a metropolis." Five visions linked by a single thread, as Nicolin reiterates: "Never fall into the nostalgia for a mythical ideal city." FD

HA PERCORSO OLTRE UN SECOLO D’ARTE, SEMPRE FUORI DAGLI SCHEMI. GILLO DORFLES, MANUALE VIVENTE DI SCIENZE VISIVE, RACCONTA LA LOGICA DELL'APPROSSIMAZIONE, NELL'ARTE E NELLA VITA, IL SUO ULTIMO PROGETTO di Sandra Gesualdi

HE HAS TRAVELLED OVER A CENTURY OF ART, BEING ALWAYS OUTSIDE ESTABLISHED PATTERNS. GILLO DORFLES, A LIVING MANUAL OF THE VISUAL SCIENCES, RECOUNTS LA LOGICA DELL'APPROSSIMAZIONE, NELL'ARTE E NELLA VITA, HIS LATEST PROJECT

“I take note that the world is what it is and not what it could be today, here, now.” It is necessary to speak in the present for an icon that has lived through the entire 1900s and counts during his life interviews with Svevo and exchanges of letter with Calvino. Everything began in Trieste on the trajectory of Mitteleuropean culture where, as a young man, he frequented intellectuals and thinkers in the antique library of Umberto Saba. “I have never been Angelo, the name was too high-sounding.” Notwithstanding the clarification, Gillo Dorfles is a giant on the shoulders of history, a living manual of the visual sciences, a bottomless treasure chest of culture, a creative instinct and talent.

A wise writer, sculptor and painter, he soon left aside his university degree in Medicine with a specialisation in Psychiatry, and dedicated himself with a voracious eclecticism to philosophy and aesthetic critiques. His visionary intelligence knew how to accept the great changes in post-war Italy and seize on their oscillations of taste: from art to kitsch, from architecture to design, from theatre to fashion, from music to costumes. He walked obliquely along the paths of knowledge, without ever remaining imprisoned for too long in pre-established categories. Not even when “creating for fun” he found himself experimenting with all the major avant-garde currents: from Abstract Art to Futurism to Dadaism, up to his experience with Surrealism. With the passing of the years, the colours of his canvases became more alive and brilliant and the small and acute eyes, sketched with a dreamer’s accent, became bigger. The same with the careful and curious glances that he dedicated to the surrounding world.

At La Freccia Design he recounts La logica dell'approssimazione, nell'arte e nella vita, his latest project, among the prize exhibitions of the XXI Triennale di Milano, which may be visited until September 12 at the Palazzo della Permanente. A small review that covers the entire sense of design through a tale experienced by the objects. Works and tools displayed that have always accompanied our daily existence in a miscellany dense with thought and daily identification.A futuristic display produced by the group Blumerandfriends, organised jointly with his friend Aldo Colonetti, who explains: “This is an idea we have been working on for years. On display are some forty works through which we attempt to define a concept that is as abstract as it is difficult, usually linked to mathematical notions. Long research in the field beginning with Plato who, with his Settima Lettera, addresses the debate between the perfect idea and the real world.”

MAY2016FD

FD Professor Dorfles, how did this research into approximation developed, across all disciplines, get started? We went back to a reflection of mine made on the side of a conference on De Divina Proportione organised at the Triennale of 1951 which saw the presence, among others, of Le Corbusier, Pier Luigi Nervi and Bruno Zevi. I argue that indeterminacy has opened up a new era. One able to push aside the guiding principles of architecture, focused on precision and exactness, which has dominated the last 50 years beginning with Dutch and Russia constructivists. These aspects of Rationalist rigour at a certain point were left behind and the inflexible ethics themselves of the German Bauhaus left space for a growing desire for imprecision.FD In fact, you believe that art is always indefinite…Irrationality in the creative process represents an important base, because it is capable of causing a crisis for any pre-established model, to be matched with the notion of intuition and especially intentionality, which give a sense of life from which art takes its inspiration. As soon as such an expressive tendency fossilises into a precise category, this extraordinary tension in favour of what’s new, to the contrary of all forms of dogmatism, intervenes. And the person, with his or her individual choices and will, becomes the protagonist of action.FD Approximation as evolution? In this exhibition we wanted to give space to expressions that usually, in the field of design, are ignored. The purpose was to subvert order to arrive at an evident will of non-determination. And to show the typical ambiguity of our times which allows meanings and values to change. This permits us not to stop before absolute models and pushes us to begin traversing different trails; the interpretation of a work of art itself must always be developed by personal experience.

FD Some examples?Renzo Piano (linked to the professor by profound respect and friendship, Ed.) is present with a sketch and a model of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. There are functional homages in the building and an analogy with the instruments that inspired its shape. Although he is considered an extremely rigorous urban artist, he offers good example of contravention to his own tendencies in the latest skyscrapers he has created in Berlin. A production that has been saved from the strict rules of Constructivism. In fashion, instead, Elio Fiorucci was brilliant because he created an innovative language for young people and his clothes exploited the fantasy that became practical. His plastic coloured accessories of the 1980s are an excellent example of this. Finally, Marcel Duchamp who always characterised his experimentation with the resolute spirit to disobey the rules of the game. He taught us that any object may become a masterpiece, it is enough to imagine it. The conscious relationship with what surrounds us is the base of our knowledge. Which never finishes.FD You have frequented such great names as Lucio Fontana, Joan Miró, Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, just to name a few. Who do you remember best?Lucio (Fontana, Ed.), I consider him one of the greatest talents of all time. Unique and approximate, he based his poetry on the transgression of what were the norms of the beautiful. FD Beyond pleasure and fun what does it give you, why do you paint? To glorify disorder.

The interview is over. Because, in the afternoon, the maestro dedicates himself to writing. All his articles and essays are typed out entirely on an old Olivetti model Lettera 22 and sent to the publisher by courier or dictated over the phone. It’s the only rule he accepts. He accompanies us to the door avoiding volumes, books and sculptures spread about the entire house, and with elegance admonishes us: “Please don’t spend too much time on my age, being 106 years old is certainly not due to merit.” Perhaps his secret is faith in the invisible and unpronounceable and the liberty of having always sought to understand the earth better instead of attempting to climb towards the heavens. And the path is infinite, word of Gillo.

The two greatest designers of the 1900s were Charlotte Perriand and Lilly Reich, but most of the furniture they created is known by us as the works of two men: Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. More in general we can say that the history of women in the sector often escapes critics and historians, who tend to view it as masculine. The fact of dedicating an exhibit to Italian women, starting with the early years of the last century, is therefore a splendid idea. The monographic W. Women in Italian Design is on display at the Triennale Design Museum until February 19, 2017. To fi nd out more, we have contacted the organiser Silvana Annicchiarico.FD Does it make sense to speak of female design?Yes, it has a particular signifi cance today because one of the most delicate and diffi cult issues to address, but also one of the most stimulating and evocative, is the question of gender. The exhibition is a response to the removal of “pink” design from history. It is not compensation, but a return to balance.FD This is a large exhibition, given that it embraces a long historical period…I have selected about 650 works from 400 creative designers that are Italian or have a strong connection with our country and its production system. In certain cases these are works that represent the border between art and design, which are fused and confused together; in others I recount those personalities who are fundamental to the system – gallery directors, historians, communication specialists, journalists – who are, in every way, designers who deserve being represented here. FD Who organised the presentation? The scenery designer Margherita Palli, who more than once has demonstrated great attention and sensitivity to presentation

issues, while I worked on the graphics with Irene Bacchi. The entire museum represents the work of women.FD You have chosen chronological ordering instead of the topical. Why do you use the metaphor of the river in the presentation text? The allegory of a course of water that passes through the 1900s – at times like a raging torrent, others like a placid canal – is a way of telling this story in a dynamic, fluid and liquid manner. The female designers are close to young people and those less famous in a democratic way. FD It seems to me that you have not favoured the functional aspect instead of the artistic one.In the selection there is a correct balance between the first point of view and a more borderline design, in which art and artisanship are combined. In general, the protagonists do not demonstrate an obsession for problem-solving, typical

of a patriarchal culture, but tend more to welcoming, caring, reusing and facing the emotional dimension beyond the rational. FD What is Italy’s position in the sector today?Design is one of the few cases, if not the only, where we import talent. There is therefore the possibility of producing new and exciting things, not just useful things.FD Who are our three fellow Italians to follow?Patricia Urquiola because she is a force of nature and oozes endless vitality. Francesca Lanzavecchia for her experimental research abilities. The Irvine Studio, with Maria Laura Rossiello Irvine and Maddalena Casadei, for their capacity to keep a historic brand alive working with great autonomy, freshness and innovation.

diventare oggetto dello spettacolo.

A multidisciplinary hub of contemporary research: from design to theatre, from architecture to music, including film making. The XXI Triennale di Milano includes all these aspects, a golden opportunity to test a new model of cultural organisation and management ranging from performing arts to the creation of objects. The program curated by the Centro di Ricerca per il Teatro (Research Centre for Theatre - Crt), the new project of the Milano Design Film Festival and the two cycles of concerts curated by Ponderosa Music&Art create a calendar of events that promotes the idea of an open and multi-disciplinary exhibition. "We wanted the Teatro dell'Arte, a fascinating but so far underutilised hall built in 1933 by architect Giovanni Muzio, to become one of the landmarks of the city, a laboratory facilitating the collaboration between all institutions as well as a bridge connecting similar international experiences," explains Franco Laera, coordinator of the Crt. Nine events make up the mosaic, alternating and crossing the events of the main exhibition. Among the protagonists, three major presences: Latvian Alvis Hermanis, Argentinian Rodrigo García and Italian Filippo Andreatta. The first, known for having directed the Due Foscari by Giuseppe Verdi at Teatro alla Scala, stages from June 9 to 11 The black milk, a critique of the megalopolis. While Rodrigo García, who rarely appears on the Italian scene, on June 28 and 29 offers 4, a radical and poetic work on junk cities. The Italian author Filippo Andreatta, finally, finds in architecture his reference point, making it the subject of the show. A place as a landscape, September 6 to 18, is an experiment in which space is the protagonist in the total absence of a narrative. Only sensations count. An event that is able to communicate through the audio visual language is instead the goal achieved by Antonella Dedini and Silvia Robertazzi, curators of the Milan Design Film Festival, who have designed for the Triennale a special exhibition: "We have selected 31 films interpreting the theme Design After Design, collaborating with directors of five European festivals and as many non-European ones. A way to embrace different worlds by addressing common issues: undergoing urbanisation, cities to be rethought, sustainability, industrial archaeology." The added value, specify the organisers, was "to involve countries that did not participate directly in the International Exhibition but can find their space through documentaries." There will be two appointments every month until September: "On May 24 and 25 we will host films from Portugal, Australia and Sweden. On June 21 it is the turn of an Italian documentary, The Devil's Soup by Davide Ferrario, followed by a proposal from the Festival of Architecture of Rotterdam dedicated to the Dutch creative Hugh Maaskant. The next day the stage will be for the United States, with two appointments on urban planning in California and design in New York. On July 12 and 13 it will be the turn of projections from Hungary and Chile, and finally on September 6 we will show documentaries from South Africa and Spain."

FD

The musical project is explained by Titti Santini, director of Ponderosa Music&Art, an agency specialising in international jazz, world and author music festivals: "We have created two cycles of concerts. The first cycle, which includes some original productions with a contemporary take, is hosted right in the Palazzo della Triennale, with its beautiful garden, and in the Teatro dell'Arte. The second cycle is hosted in the Museo Diocesiano and is dedicated to the different musical forms inspired by spirituality. Both promote and stimulate the dialogue between distant cultures, the journey, the curiosity and the experiment." Among the several appointments, some are a must: "On September 11 there will be the historic Suite in C by Terry Riley, performed by the author in an original African version. A Ukrainian avant-garde quartet, Dakha Brakha (meaning "give and take"), will offer to the public a powerful expression of ethnic chaos: oblique melodies with instruments from the five continents. Another highlight is the presentation of the album Né so by Rokia Trauré, a sophisticated musician from Mali, ambassador of a refined culture and socially engaged." FD

INTERNAZIONALI DELLA XXI TRIENNALEdi Francesca Ventre

FROM THE ITALO-CHINESE EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL TO A HOUSE IN A SUITCASE IN LEBANON, A VOYAGE THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS OF THE XXI TRIENNALE

From Mexico to Japan, from Canada to South Sudan. In the wake of the recent Expo, Milan continues its international experience with the XXI Triennale, which returns to the city after 20 years. Without any obstacles: between tradition and innovation, respect for nature and artisanship, exploiting the potential of technology. Until September 12, some 40 participants will make presentations in six locations in the Lombard capital. Countries like the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy, with the strength of their past, will meet with competitive nations facing the future, such as Iran and Albania.

in continua evoluzione.

The trek may begin from the garden of the Triennale: here China and Italy, unusually together, will propose a school in continuous evolution. Professors, students and visitors will participate in a workshop, with readings and events, in a space divided between a laboratory and a bamboo installation. While Japan recounts the techniques of bell production, with which today different products of daily use are also manufactured. The Museo nazionale della scienza e della tecnica Leonardo da Vinci cannot but welcome original ideas. Among them Stay at Home, prepared by the Lebanese studio FaR Architect, a capsule house to be attached externally to windows, that adapts to the form of an extended body and becomes a suitcase ready to be transported anywhere. In the same location, Lithuania emphasises gravitation design, an experience to be tried like a playground ride. All of a sudden, the floor begins to move rhythmically to simulate the absence of weight, triggering euphoric shouts or leaving one breathless. Greece instead concentrates on the project Sustain/Ability, an installation of springs produced in steel tubes: metal, which resists change, acquires elasticity when it is transformed into a spiral. More tranquil, but anyway rich with emotions, the voyage of the senses in Myanmar by means of a precious wood among the most used in the sector of furnishings: teak. In the cultural hub spaces Base Milano, established in the Ex Ansaldo area, the French excellence of Saint-Étienne, the Unesco city of design since 2010, is presented.

slum poverissimo dove 300mila persone vivono ancora nelle baracche.

The tour continues in the Fabbrica del Vapore, where Russia re-evaluates with innovative restoration techniques and solutions the architecture of the Soviet Vanguard, condemned over time for its ideological leanings. From the Soviet cold we pass to the Mediterranean heat, represented by Tunisia, Italy, Spain and Portugal, the promoting countries of concrete reflections so that the Middle Sea becomes a place of multiethnic exchange and not only landing and strife. The solidarity continues in the Museo Diocesiano where the exhibit La casa come diritto located in the Haiti pavilion has been organised by the Francesca Rava NPH Italia Onlus Foundation. On display, among other items is the Fors Lakay lodging project: 200 small brick homes built in a very poor slum where three hundred thousand people still live in shacks. At the Palazzo della Permanente, finally, a Mexican project on the ideal house: for a perfect aesthetic of proportions inspired by rules made in Italy, dictated ante litteram by Vitruvius 2,000 years ago and by Leon Battista Alberti in the 1400s. The moral of the tale in a tweet? Man at the centre, in continuous relation and dialogue with the external, the world and the universe. FD
