Karakter is a Danish design brand specialising in the production of furniture, lighting, and interior objects. We seek out designs that are out of the ordinary—from designers who have already written the history of design to those who aspire to write the future. All the designers presented by Karakter are handpicked for their ideas and creativity and shared by all of them is an inspiring level of productivity and an uncompromising take on their work. Something that is also fundamental for Karakter and our design choices.

—Achille Castiglioni”I have always desired to do the opposite. Not because I have an anarchic behaviour, but because I think the fundamental basis of design consists in thinking the opposite”. Italian designer Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) had a passion for re-designing, re-inventing and re-conceptualizing. Traditional interior design objects would pass through his Milan based studio and end up perfected. He always aimed at enhancing and glorifying the value of the design. Through- out his career he worked to raise design to an ever-higher level of synthesis—stripping design down to the very core and eliminating everything superfluous. During his career Achille Castiglioni collaborated with many designers, among them Giancarlo Pozzi. Together they made Trio and Comodo in 1991.

—Pier Giacomo CastiglioniThe Italian designer and architect Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is the second of the three Castiglioni brothers. Like his brothers, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic. In 1938 Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and his elder brother, Livio, founded a practice in Milan, which the youngest brother, Achille, joined in 1944. All three Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is regarded as the intellectual equal of his brother Achille. Until his untimely death in 1968, Pier Giacomo collaborated with Achille on numerous objects. The Castiglioni brothers exerted a strong influence on the younger generation of Italian designers. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni taught design at Milan Polytechnic from 1946 until his death.

—Joe ColomboBelieved in democratic and functional design. Flexible and convertible furniture meant to be used in many different ways—all for the benefit of the user. He experimented with new materials and the latest technologies and designed futuristic “machines for living”, many of which have become icons for a new way of living.

—Aldo BakkerAldo Bakker (1971) has an uncompromising take on design. His work has a delicate and rare sense of harmony and the shapes communicate through association, touch, texture, and materiality. His designs are often strange, yet strangely familiar. Always intended to trigger a response.

—Gijs BakkerGijs Bakker (1942) is a multi-disciplinary Dutch designer, lecturer and one of the original founders of Droog design. Through a philosophy of “conceptual design in context”, his studio in Amsterdam follows a holistic design approach in which heart, mind and substance come together. Through out the years both Gijs and his studio have conceived numerous design icons, and Bakker’s work is represented in collections, both in museums and private collections worldwide. As a teacher and lecturer he urges students, artists and designers to find their individuality as designers. Something he himself has managed to do very well.

—Angelo MangiarottiItalian architect, sculptor, and designer Angelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan in 1921. Mangiarotti is quoted to have said, ”Happiness comes from honesty”. A quote that hints to his over all design approach that was rooted in the firm belief that architecture was a practical discipline – and that industrial design was an expression of fine craftsmanship. He wanted each individual material to be respected and to be used in an appropriate and honest way. Beyond his many architectural feats, Mangiarotti’s work includes a wide array of creative projects ranging from sculptures, to products and lamps. Over the course of his career, he held lecturing positions at a number of distinguished design and architecture schools in Italy and abroad, he won numerous awards in both design and architecture, and his work has been featured in many exhibitions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Triennale Design Museum in Milan, and Gallery MA in Tokyo.

—Bodil KjærBodil Kjær, Professor, Architect MAA was born in Denmark in 1932, and has since then led an impressive life all around the world. She was educated in Denmark, England and the States, and practised as an architect, designer and planner from her own offices in both Copenhagen and London. She’s been featured in the New York Times, her work can be seen in three early Bond movies, she’s got fans in the English Royal House, and she’s been know as the designer behind “The most beautiful desk in the world”. Ironically, the designer herself never really sought out fame or glory, but was always driven by the desire to educate herself, become better in her field, and to set new standards. A drive that meant her career also expanded into

teaching, research, and professorship. Today, Bodil Kjær is back in Denmark and lives on the east coast of Jutland where she continues to teach, do research and participate in the architectural development of the city of Aarhus.

—Paul McCobb Paul McCobb (1917-1969) was one of the leading contemporary furniture designers on the American design scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Over a timespan of twenty years he designed an impressive range of multi-functional furniture, accessories and textiles, as well as several notable interior design projects. McCobb often offered a playful take on traditional forms with hints of Scandinavian craftsmanship and International style clarity, often made with affordable and robust materials such as iron, solid wood and durable upholstery. Since his early death in 1969 his designs have not been in production, but are now making their way back.

—Plueer SmittDominic Plueer a nd Olivier Smitt a re Swiss born desiners. They a im to offer something lasting, physica lly as well as menta lly, as a contrast to a societ y which is sometimes more driven by consumption a nd replacement. In most of their work they interpret their own obser vations of a lready excisting products.

—Anatomy DesignAnatomy Design is owned and run by Megan Hesse and Andrea Kleinloog. They started in 2009, primarily as an interior design studio the success of some of the product designs led to a need to house them (quite literally). And this was how the retail store began. Both the product and interior sides of the studio has received numerous awards—and continue to develop new and exciting projects. Inspired by her parents’ pharmaceutical work and their old lab equipment, Andrea Kleinloog from Anatomy Design designed the Lab Light. Simple in its aesthetics, inspiring in its mix of materials.

—Guillaume DelvigneBorn in France in 1979, Guillaume Delvigne studied at Ecole de Design Nantes Atlantique and Politecnico di Milano. Graduated in 2002, he joins George J. Sowden studio in Milan, co founder of the Memphis movement. In parallel he quickly starts to design his own objects. In 2011 he opens his own studio, inaugurates his first personal ex h ibition at the ToolsGa lerie a nd

receives the Gra nd Prize by the cit y of Pa ris. He has since devoloped severa l projects for big French a nd foreig n compa n ies.

—Milia SeyppelMilia Seyppel Design speaks a unique, poetic and sensual language, constructing forms, sculptures, playful objects and finding new ways of use. The starting point for a new design can be an idea, a shape, a material or a problem that Milia Seyppel wants to solve. One example is her project Vases, which are inspired by the strength, the purity and the precision of industrial forms found in machinery and architecture. Her design intends to test limits and explore new possibilities of materials and forms in accordance with their use. To her understanding good design is dependent on what the product is meant to be and where it is meant for—it is a question of the intention of the product.

—Derek McLeod & Joy CharbonneauSince 2008, Joy Charbonneau and Derek McLeod have established reputations for their their timeless furniture, objects, and art for contract and residential markets. Their work is archetypal, usable and elegant – objects that make life better by looking and performing well. Our first piece from Canadians Joy Charbonneau and Derek McLeod is Hang Around, a beautifully updated version of a classic coat rack. The Hang Around is spacious and has a round and soft look that contrasts well to the sturdy iron material and the matte polished finish. Seven dedicated pegs and their respective bars are ready to add a welcoming and distinctive vibe to hallways and bedrooms, waiting areas, hotel lobbies and restaurants.

—Nick RossNick Ross (1986) is a designer from Scotland who presently resides and works in Stockholm. In Scotland he studied Product Design at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen and afterwards moved to Stockholm, where he continued his training in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, taking a masters at Konstfack

(University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) graduating in 2013. Nick founded his own studio in 2014. His research focuses on the complex repertoire of history, particularly ancient history, where he finds the factors with which to interpret the relationship between the user and contemporary design. Using storytelling as a pretext and applying an always critical approach, Nick Ross is interested in investigating facts and happenings that have determined specific cultural balances; every project comes from the desire to create ideal or real bridges between the present society and that of the past.

—Christian HaasBorn in Germany in 1974, Christian Haas established his Studio in 2000. The Industrial Designer creates ever since products through multiple disciplines from furniture and lighting to porcelain and glassware. His design approach merges simplicity and elegance. His sense of aesthetics is driven by the harmony between sobriety, usefulness, emotionality, longevity and uniqueness. The Studio works for international brands such as Rosenthal, Karimoku New Standard, Arita2016 and Tecta as well as for selected design galleries. Throughout the years, his work was honored with awards like the Red Dot Design Award and the Elle Decoration International Design Award. Notable works include the lighting edition ROPES, part of Vitra Design Museum’s permanent collection; the broad furniture range for Japanese producer Karimoku New Standard and some of the most successful tableware series of the past 10 years. Christian Haas lives and works in Porto, Portugal.

LungangoloCastiglioni is said to ponder a lot on lost space. Empty inches and square me-ters that could be filled with beautiful design—but for some reason just never were. Due to this thinking he did many designs intended specifically for the corners of the home. Lungangolo is one of those. Lungangolo is a multi-use piece of furniture originally produced by Bernini. The frame is made of four slender pillars with square cross-sec-tions in between to support the square shelves placed in var-ious heights. The structure is strength-ened by a drawer and a side piece. The position of the drawer and elimination of part of the support meant it had to be manufactured in two versions—to work for both left and right handed.

16Paul McCobbThe foundation of the series is a beauti-fully simplistic console table/desk with slim and straight steel legs, stripped from any details or ornaments, leaving two small drawers on the left for small keepings. If more storage and distinctive-ness is needed, add the second piece in the series, the two-drawer organizer that re-sides on the same slender leg construction as the table itself and has the same playful two-finger opening system as the drawers in the desk. The two-drawer organizer can be placed underneath the desk, beside the desk or used as a standalone item next to sofas or beds.

Office DeskWe are proud to present our first design from a Danish designer. In this case, Danish architect, professor, and designer, Bodil Kjær. The iconic desk, designed in 1959, was the first of its kind with its pure and simplistic design, almost floating mid-air. Bodil Kjærs’ design has been called ‘The most beautiful desk in the world’ – or, the ‘James Bond desk’ as it was featured prominently in three early Bond movies.

ComodoThroughout his career Castiglioni worked to raise design to an ever-higher level of synthesis —stripping design down to the very core and eliminating everything superfluous. One of the many proofs of this approach is the Comodo from 1988. Comodo is a versatile piece of furniture designed by Achille Castiglioni and Giancarlo Pozzi. It consists of a long metal stem, mounted on a tripod and supporting a wood cabinet. The cabinet is set off-centre and has a tray-shaped lid that opens and closes with hinges. This elegant multi-purpose unit can be used as a bedside table, a tray, a coffee table or simply as a storage box for all your favorites. Supposedly Castiglioni, being a big fan of sweets, used his own Comodo to store candy.

Rampa Rampa, a multifunctional station on wheels from 1965, was inspired by the traditional florist’s display stands found on Italian town squares. On one side, the steps serve as a bookshelf with the four steps being covered with tempered glass plates, and a compartment in the lower large step, which is closed with a flap door. At the opposite side of Rampa, there are two visible compartments for storage as well as a larger flap that, when opened, acts as a writing desk, and reveals two more compartments, and six drawers. Thanks to the four castors, two of which has brakes, the object can easily be moved around or fixed.

TriAngle The Dutch designer, Aldo Bakker, is known for his uncompromising approach to design. This is a perfect example of his work. TriAngle consists of 12 triangular elements—cut to fit together like the perfect puzzle. The final puzzle reveals a square stool or side table with a distinguished and very precise look. The sharp corners and visible cuts will become softer and gain patina over time, making tear, wear and decay a very essential part of this design. Aldo Bakkers’ work has a delicate and rare sense of harmony and his ideas are always intended to trigger a response. He wants to challenge us with his design, to make us stop our everyday routines for a minute and ponder over an odd little feature, hopefully making us perform our everyd-ay casual acts with more attention.

Bronco StoolSaddle or stool? Bronco Stool kickstarts your thoughts. First the speculation about which way to sit: in classic mode or astride? Then the two eye-catching screws and the moulded piece of wood that unites the seat and one of the legs. Is it a handle, a lower back support, a hook? Maybe all of the above. Through the fluidity of its form and its T-shaped struc-ture, Guillaume Delvigne gave Bronco stool a robust, accessible and likeable identity well done.

Domo Table LampThe Domo lamp was originally designed by Italian designer Joe Colombo in 1965. Back then he designed three lamps based on the same core shape. Known for his democratic and functional design, his flexible and convertible furniture meant to be used in many different ways – all to the benefit of the user. Joe Colombo experi-mented with new materials and the latest technologies and designed futuristic “machines for living”, many of which have become icons for a new way of living. One of them is Domo. Colombo often rejected sharp corners and straight lines in favour of curvaceous forms.

Awkward Light Quirky and slightly off. Floor lamp with a quirky anatomy—deliberately propor-tioned with a somewhat nervous balance. The design derived from wanting to illuminate two areas in close proximity; two sides of a sofa or both an armchair and a desk. It was crucial to the design to keep all elements as delicate as physics could possibly allow. The long arms create a contradictory, almost nervous balance and the design language dictates a personality that can only be described as: Awkward.

Tripod Gijs Bakker is a multi-disciplinary Dutch designer, lecturer and one of the original founders of Droog design. Through a phi-losophy of ‘conceptual design in context’, his studio in Amsterdam follows a holistic design approach in which heart, mind and substance come together. Through-out the years both Gijs and his studio have conceived numerous design icons, and Gijs Bakker’s work is represented in both museums and private collections worldwide. As a teacher and lecturer he urges students, artists and designers to find their own language as designers. Something he himself has managed to do. The Tripod is a sensual table lamp made of one piece of moth-blown glass. Three intriguing structures support the light bulb in the centre of the lamp. All Tripods are moth-blown and therefore unique.

Aida LampThe Aida Lamp is one of the most charac-teristic lamps drawn by Angelo Mangia-rotti. There is a certain tension in the design that makes for an interplay with the two large volumes that are connected only by a slim stem which seems too weak to hold the larger shade. Again, Angelo Mangiarotti references the structures in his architecture that he is so famous for – slim, elegant pillars that supports large and heavy ceilings in an almost impossible lift. Of course the lamp is not fragile or out of balance, but is a beautiful and sculptural lamp that creates a soft indirect light.

Steel Lab Light Inspired by her parents’ pharmaceutical work and their old lab equipment, Andrea Kleinloog from Anatomy Design dsigned the Lab Light mixing steel, brass and porcelain. This brought on a desire to make a lamp with a younger feel. Base, lampshade, and rotating arm—all in painted aluminium.

Notre DameThe Reproduction of the Reproduction of the Reproduction Notre Dame originates from an art project where Laura Straßer explored a Chinese porcelain tradition. Here, each lampshade is a cast of the pre-vious, larger shade and is itself the model for the next, smaller one. Her project was titled ‘14%’, as this was the average shrinkage from cast to cast. Inspired by the Chinese tradition.

SfericoJoe Colombo believed in democratic and functional design. In his lifetime he de-signed a wide range of different drinking glasses. Something that seems very to the point as he was said to love drinking and smoking. Unfortunately this undoub-tedly contributed to his young demise, but we’d like to think he would be pleased to see that his creations live on. In 1968 he designed a series of six glasses, all based on geometrical figures. True to his democratic and functional take on design, all the glasses were intended for a wide range of different usage—such as water, long drinks, whisky, wine, beer, juice, champagne, ice cream and so on. Karakter is proud to bring some of the very finest glasses to your table and will introduce the six different Joe Colombo glasses.

VasesIndustrial beauty. Inspired by industrial architecture, machinery, and tools for mass fabrication. Straight lines, sharp edges, clear shapes. Wrapped in a velvety soft surface reminiscent to concrete or stone. Different colour marks on the surface and irregular glazing on the inside makes each vase unique. Thus Vases shrewdly reflects the clash between mass production and unique objects of art. Milia Seyppel transforms rowdy industry into sensual ceramic objects. Three designs available, Vases 1, 2 or 3.
