La domenica• Comes from Latin day of

dominicus, day of the Lord; for the Roman world, before the coming of Christianity, it was the day of the Sun, in the US and Northern Europe is known as Sunday. (Day of the Sun)

• Viene dal latino dies dominicus, giorno del Signore; per il mondo romano, prima dell’avvento del Cristianesimo, era dies solis, giorno del Sole, negli Stati Uniti e del nord Europa si chiama Sunday.

Il lunedi • Dal latino dies lunae, giorno

della luna. In molti paesi europei, Italia e sudamerica è considerato il primo giorno della settimana, mentre negli Stati Uniti, in Brasile e per la Chiesa cattolica è il secondo. Per questo motivo in alcune lingue (arabo, grego, e portoghese) il nome significa “secondo giorno”.

In many European countries, Italy and South America, it is considered the first day of the week, while in the US, Brazil and for the Catholic Church, it is the second. Therefore, in some languages like Arab, Greek and Portuguese, the name means “Second day”.

giorno di Marte. Martis era il dio di Guerra. Martis è anche un dio terrale, e percio è diventato il dio della morte e finalmente il dio di guerra. Era il padre di Romulus e Remus, i fundatori di Roma. I romani si chiamano “I figli di Martis”.

• From Latin dies Martis, day of Mars. Mars was the god of war. Martis was also an earth god and therefore became the god of death and finally the god of war. It was the father of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. The Romans call themselves “The children of Martis”.

giorno di Mercurio. Considerando la domenica come primo giorno della settimana, il mercoledì la divide in due. In tedesco, la parola “mercoledì” (Mittwoch) significa “metà della settimana”. Mercurio era il dio dei mercanti e commercio. C’è un festivale celebrato il 15 maggio.

• From Latin dies Mercurli, the day of Mercury. Considering that Sunday is the first day of the week, Wednesday divides it in two. In German, the word “Wednesday” (Mittwoch) means half of the week. Mercury was the god of commerce and merchants. A festival is celebrated on May 15th.

giorno di Giove, anche consciuto come iovis, Jove = Jupiter, il dio più importante, il dio supreme del Pantheon Romano. L’inglese Thursday deriva invece dalla divinità celtica Thor ed è probabile che dall stessa radice derive anche il sostantivo “thunder” (tuono);

• From Latin days of Jovis, day of Giove, also known as iovis, Jove= Jupiter, the most important god, the Supreme god of the Roman Pantheon. In English, Thursday is derived instead from the Celtic word Thor and probably from the same root comes the noun “thunder” (tuono)

• Dal latino dies Veneris, giorno di Venere. Venere era la figlia di Jovis. I termini inglese Friday e Tedesco Freitag si riferiscono al suo essere, un tempo, giorno sacro alla dea Freyja.

• From Latin dies Veneris, day of Venere. Venere was the daugher of Jovis (Jupiter). The English word Friday and the German word Freitag, refer to as ‘her being’, a time, a sacred day of the goddess Freyja.

derivante a sua volta dall’ebraico shabbath, giorno dedicato al riposo. Per il mondo romano, prima dell’avvento del cristianesimo, era dies Saturni, giorno di Saturno, utilizzato oggi nei paesi li lingua inglese (Saturday) e del nord Europa.
