The Accademia Musicale Chigiana, founded in 1932 by Count Guido Chigi Saracini, organizes master classes every summer for young musicians from all over the world, with the collaboration of in-ternationally renowned instructors. Besides the master classes, many other musical events are held during the same period: seminars, concerts perfor-med by both instructors and stu-dents, meetings and the “Settimana Musicale Se-nese”, a Festival founded in 1939, thanks to which important rese-arches have been carried out into the past and pre-sent of music.Home of the Fondazione Accademia Musicale Chi-giana, to which it has belonged since 1965, Palazzo Chigi Saracini is open to the public for guided tours. The conservation and display of various prized col-lections add to the prestige of the 13th century pa-lazzo. These include the art collection, noteworthy for its works by artists belonging to all the great pe-riods of Italian art and in particular to the Sienese School, sculptures, silverwork and ivories, as well as a porcelain collection from one of the most im-portant Italian schools ranging from the 16th to the 18th century. The musical instrument museum is equally im-pressive, containing some 90 instruments inclu-ding violins, violas, violoncellos and double basses, along with lutes, guitars, mandolins, zithers, wind and keyboard instruments and folk instruments. Also important is the library, which numbers some 70,000 volumes of literary and musical works, toge-ther with the vast correspondence of Count Guido Chigi Saracini. For information call +39 0577 22091

THE HISTORY OF SIENALegend has it that Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius, the sons of Remus, who was himself the broth-er of Romulus after whom Rome was named. Though the myth is of dubious historical veracity, statues of the famed twins suckling from the she-wolf may be found here and there throughout Siena. According to a differ-ent legend, the city was originally founded further to the south in a place known today as Brenna, taking its name from Brennus, a Gaulish tribal chief of the Senones. It appears probable that the name Siena was derived from the patrician Etruscan Saina/Seina. What is entirely certain is that the Romans established a lesser military colony here, Saena Julia, which developed over subse-quent years into a small center of commerce. The oldest known document to cite the Sienese community dates back to the year 70 and bears the signature of Publius Cornelious Tacitus.During the High Middle Ages the city was governed by the Longobards in the person of a gastald, then in the 9th century it passed into Frankish hands. Great works were undertaken, such as the building of the Via Franci-gena, the road connecting Rome to France which served as a major route for pilgrims and travelers alike. Indeed this flow along the Via Francigena notably increased the commercial importance of Siena. During that period the Church, too, played an active role in the city government, particularly from the 9th to the 11th centuries, after which time the Sienese reclaimed their right to govern and ad-ministrate their own city.

The city’s growing economic and military might spawned inevitable conflict with Florence, especially when both powers sought to expand their respective territories. To-ward the end of the 12th century, Siena, which upheld the Ghibelline cause, found itself in opposition to Guelphic Florence, hence the famous 1260 clash in the Battle of Montaperti when the Sienese, led by King Manfred of Sicily, destroyed the Florentine army. In 1269 the Battle of Colle Val d’Elsa saw the Sienese defeated by troops from Florence and Colle, and later brought about the rise of the Government of the Nine in 1287. It was under this new government that Siena reached the height of its economic, cultural and artistic splendor, becoming one of the most important cities in all of Italy. The Plague of 1348, however, killed some 60% of the population, and the Republic of Siena began its slow decline, which cul-minated in 1555 when the city was forced to surrender to Florentine supremacy after three centuries of pre-eminence.From 1150 to 1300, despite outside conflicts over bound-aries as well as internecine disputes for power, master artists found here a fertile environment in which to blos-som, and magnificent structures like the Cathedral, the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Torre del Mangia were built, giving lustre to the city. The driving force behind the con-struction of such architectural masterpieces was more often than not the Consiglio dei Nove, the Council of Nine.Over the course of the 1600s and the 1700s, Siena be-came one of the most sought-after towns to be visited by young members of Europe’s cultural and political élite when making their “Grand Tour.” Excitement and a spirit of rebirth arose among local cultural institutions; thus the University of Siena and many Academies founded in the 1500s were given new vitality and did not fall into obscu-rity, for Siena continued to make its presence felt on the international circuit. From the 14th to the 19th centuries, a mixed variety of rulers including Emperor Charles V and Cosimo I de’ Medici saw to the increase of Siena’s economic clout, due largely to the prominence of the renowned bank, the Monte dei Paschi di Siena. In 1859, Siena was the first city in Tuscany to vote in favor of the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. Ever since then, it has played a vital role within the region of Tuscany, and today it thrives on finance and on the tourist industry, with visitors drawn here from around the world to experience the city’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

THE SURROUNDING TERRITORYThe province of Siena – stretching more than 100 km. north to south – enfolds a vast and highly varied territory. The land holds many kinds of natural beauty that change as each sort of topography gives way to the next. The province may be divided into the following areas, each characterized by its own distinct landform: the Val d’Elsa to the northwest of Siena; Chianti to the northeast, with its green, vineyard-covered hills; the city of Siena itself, set among soft hills; the Val di Merse, famous for the swimming spots along the lovely River Merse; the Crete Senesi, the clay hills to the south of the city, with their rugged, nearly lunar, landscapes; the Val d’Orcia further to the south, with its ancient mineral baths, home also of the world-famous Brunello di Montalcino wine.

THE PALIOThe Palio lasts four days. On 29 June for the July running, and on 13 August for the August event, a horse is assigned to each of the Contradas (districts of the city) taking part in that particular race. The assignment of horses drawn by lot is know as the Tratta. A total of six trial runs are held during the days leading up to the Palio – one at 9 o’clock each morning and one each evening at 7:45 pm (7:30 pm for the August race). he last of the evening trial runs is called the Prova Generale, whereas the very last practice run – held on the morning of the Palio itself – is known as the Provaccia. The Palio race consists of three laps around the seashell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the outer ring of which is covered by a thick layer of tuffaceous earth to form the track. The Mossa – the start-ing area – is marked off by two ropes between which the horses of nine of the Contradas line up according to an order also drawn by lot. When the tenth horse – known as the rincorsa (the “run-ning start”) – enters the starting area, the foremost rope drops and the race begins. The victorious Contrada is the one whose horse, with or without the jockey still astride, is the first to com-plete the race’s three laps. The winning Contrada is awarded the Palio (from the Latin pallium, meaning “banner”), nicknamed the Drappellone (meaning “Big Cloth”), which will then be housed in the victor’s museum forevermore.
